Fighting Viruses, Hackers and Malware is Easy with Microsoft Forefront; New Marketing Campaign Emphasizes Customer Demand for Ease of UseMicrosoft Forefront business security products featured in worldwide integrated marketing campaign that combines advertising, Web experience, customer engagement and PR

REDMOND, Wash., April 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Microsoft Corp. is addressing customer frustration with the complexity of security products in a new integrated marketing campaign launched today called Easy, Easier (http://www.easyeasier.com/). The Microsoft(R) Forefront(TM) line of business security products is featured in a campaign that combines print and online advertising, a creative Web experience, integrated customer relationship marketing (CRM) and public relations. The campaign uses humorous metaphors to illustrate how defending against security threats with Forefront is easier than defending against virtually anything else -- including far-fetched threats from aliens, ninjas and zombies.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO )

The goal of this campaign, created by McCann Worldgroup San Francisco, is to emphasize Microsoft's competitive differentiation in making security products easier to deploy, implement and manage.

"We wanted to connect with the customer in a new and different way," said Rob Bagot, executive vice president and executive creative director at McCann Worldgroup San Francisco. "By using humor in a relevant fashion, we can engage and inform IT professionals at the same time."

Feedback from customers worldwide indicated that many enjoyed the fact that Microsoft was using IT-relevant humor as an entry point into a serious conversation on security. The approach was seen as highly engaging and standing out from the typical marketing in the security category.

"I like that it was original and entertaining. It was very clever, eye- catching and memorable, which makes you want to learn more about Forefront," said an IT professional who participated in a focus group about the ads.

The campaign is brought to life on the Web through interactive flash video, leading customers through an engaging experience that seamlessly introduces more in-depth product information as they move through the site. It also features real customer stories from leading global organizations such as the Vienna International Airport, SAS, and Cable & Wireless, which illustrate how Forefront products have helped customers easily enhance the security of their infrastructure and simplify the reporting and management of their security products.

The Forefront brand was launched 10 months ago, and since that time Microsoft has rolled out a series of new products under the Forefront name, including Forefront Security for Exchange Server, Forefront Security for SharePoint(R), and Forefront Client Security (currently in beta). The Forefront family also includes Microsoft's edge security products, Internet Security and Acceleration Server (ISA Server) and Intelligent Application Gateway (IAG) 2007, which will be re-launched under the Forefront brand with the next generation of products.

"We've heard loud and clear from business customers that security products not only need to provide the greatest level of protection but also must be easy to manage and integrate with existing infrastructure. This ease of use is one of the key competitive differentiators that Microsoft brings to the market with its Forefront security products," said Steve Brown, director of product management for security and access product management at Microsoft.

The Easy, Easier campaign will be appearing in IT print and online media in the U.S. and 28 markets worldwide as well as throughout Microsoft's digital properties. More information on Microsoft Forefront, the Easy, Easier campaign and related customer stories can be found at http://www.easyeasier.com/.

Sentry Technology Sells Library Self Service Systems to the University of Alberta

RONKONKOMA, N.Y., April 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sentry Technology Corporation (BULLETIN BOARD: SKVY) announced today the sale of 12 QuickCheck(TM) library patron self service kiosks to the University of Alberta valued at $172,000.

QuickCheck(TM) operates in a similar fashion to a bank ATM. Patrons gain access to the library's circulation software via a user card and touch screen video monitor. A barcode or RFID chip on the book is read, the security feature deactivated and a receipt is printed identifying the titles of the books borrowed and the return date. Once the process is complete, the patron exits the library through the security system without any intervention from library staff. The entire process is fast, user friendly and frees library staff from the circulation desk to perform higher level tasks. The system includes statistical usage reporting as well as remote diagnostics and hardware management software.

The systems at the University of Alberta are configured with a new feature that will identify if more than one item is being checked out by a patron. This innovation will prevent a thief from using QuickCheck(TM) to borrow an item that has been recorded by the circulation software while hiding other items underneath the one that is properly registered.

"QuickCheck(TM) continues to be recognized as a market leading product by libraries across North America," said Peter L. Murdoch, President and CEO of Sentry Technology Corporation. "We have sold more than 200 units and have orders to build 50 additional systems for all types of libraries that will benefit from greater efficiency and lower labor costs resulting from the use of QuickCheck(TM)."

Sentry Technology Corporation designs, manufactures, sells and installs a complete line of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) solutions, Electro-Magnetic (EM) and RFID based Library Management systems as well as Radio Frequency (RF) and Electro-Magnetic (EM) EAS systems. The CCTV product line features SentryVision(R), SmartTrack, a proprietary, patented traveling Surveillance System. The Company's products are used by libraries to secure inventory and improve operating efficiency, by retailers to deter shoplifting and internal theft and by industrial and institutional customers to protect assets and people. LSI Delivers Raid 6 Solutions to the ChannelSecond generation MegaRAID SAS adapters bring RAID 6 protection to SAS/SATA environments without the cost of performance penalties

MILPITAS, Calif., April 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Corporation today announced channel availability of the second-generation MegaRAID(R) ROC (RAID-on-Chip) SAS adapters. With these adapters, channel customers can now build single-platform SAS infrastructures that support low- cost SATA drives and high-performance SAS drives with the added data security of RAID 6 support.

Based on the LSI SAS1078 controller IC, these MegaRAID products provide a high-performance internal RAID solution for traditional server applications, such as databases and email, where data loss simply is not acceptable. The adapters' RAID 6 support is a critical feature for the channel market where lower-reliability SATA drives commonly are used. RAID 6 tolerates two simultaneous drive failures and thus, the ability to manage unrecoverable media errors during rebuilds.

"The demand for both SAS and SATA is growing in the channel and, in conjunction, so is the demand for RAID 6 support as customers look to take all necessary precautions to protect their data," said Tom Kodet, worldwide channel marketing manager, LSI. "With the availability of our new MegaRAID solutions, LSI is providing channel customers with a single source for meeting all of their SAS, SATA and RAID infrastructure requirements."

The RAID 6 MegaRAID adapters now available in the channel, include the MegaRAID SAS 8708ELP, MegaRAID SAS 8704ELP, and the MegaRAID SAS 8888ELP models. All of these low-profile adapters are powered by the proven LSI SAS1078 IC, which is an I/O storage engine that transparently performs all data protection, data checking, and restoration tasks. The SAS1078 features a PCI Express host interface which enables the MegaRAID products to overcome traditional PCI host bus bottlenecks and to delivers 1.5 GB/s sustained sequential throughput for applications such as high performance data streaming or backup. Also contributing to the outstanding performance of this MegaRAID SAS family is its 667 MHz cache interface, the fastest in the industry.

The MegaRAID SAS 8708ELP features eight internal-connect ports, while the MegaRAID SAS 8704ELP features four internal-connect ports. With selectable connectors, the 8888ELP serves multiple deployment needs, enabling users to select one of three connector configurations: two internal, two external or one of each. All of these low-profile products are supported by the MegaRAID Management Suite of software and offer 3 Gb/s throughput per port. They also support both SAS expanders and SATA native command queuing (NCQ).

The adapters offer battery backup options to protect the integrity of cached data. In the event of server failure, battery backed cache provides low-cost protection that allows the RAID controller to be installed in a new server without loss of data.

LSI storage products are supplied in the channel in North America through distribution partners including Arrow Electronics, ASI, Bell Microproducts, Insight Electronics, and Microland.

AT&T Names Tom Schindler to Lead West Virginia Sales TeamWireless Veteran Responsible for all 27 Retail Locations in State

CHARLESTON, W.Va., April 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. announced today that Cingular, now AT&T, has named wireless veteran Tom Schindler as the new leader for the company's West Virginia wireless operations. Schindler will oversee sales for eight company-owned locations, five authorized agents and 14 national retailers, including Best Buy, Sam's Club and Wal-mart in Charleston and Huntington, W.Va., as well as Ashland, Ky. Schindler succeeds long-time market manager Charlie Brooks, who is retiring after more than 25 years of service in the telecommunications industry.

"I can't think of a stronger sales leader who's better-qualified to lead our West Virginia market," said Erika Thompson vice president and general manager of the wireless unit of AT&T in West Virginia and Virginia. "Tom has lived in West Virginia all his life and understands what our customers need and want in products and services."

With more than 17 years of wireless experience, Schindler has held several managerial positions in sales, operations, marketing and distribution at former Cingular Wireless, AT&T Wireless and Vanguard Cellular systems.

"There's never been a better time to provide West Virginians with the most advanced voice and data wireless services," noted Tom Schindler. "Our customers can watch HBO clips and get the latest sports scores or weather reports from their wireless phones. Plus, we'll be launching exciting applications in the coming months like mobile banking and video-sharing capabilities."

Last year, AT&T invested more than $16 million in West Virginia, making network improvements including the addition of 19 new cell sites in Charleston and Huntington. Part of the improvements include the installation of a new switch in Huntington to handle the carrier's growing volume of customers in the area. The company also boosted local network capacity in 2006 by 56 percent, which has resulted in more calls getting connected on the first try. In 2007, the company is continuing its commitment to its local network with another $3 million investment planned.

Schindler is a 1989 graduate of Marshall University with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

XO Communications Launches Broadband Wireless Services in SeattleExpands Availability of High-Speed Internet Access and Private Data Networking Services for Businesses

SEATTLE, April 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Businesses in the Seattle metropolitan area now have a new option for high-speed Internet access and private data networking services thanks to the roll out of broadband wireless technology from XO Communications and Nextlink Wireless, Inc., an affiliated XO company and the nation's largest holder of Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS) spectrum with licenses in 75 metropolitan markets.

With broadband wireless technology, businesses at locations that lack fiber connections or are only served by one local incumbent service provider can receive high-speed Internet access and private data networking services directly from XO. XO can deliver high speed network services directly to businesses over wireless links at speeds ranging from 10 Mbps to 155 Mbps (OC- 3) to support a wide range of communications services. These services include high-speed dedicated Internet access, metro Ethernet, voice over IP (VoIP), wide area networks in campus or business park settings and network redundancy. From wireless hubs deployed in the Seattle metropolitan area, XO can provide these services to qualified line-of-sight locations within a range of up to 11 miles.

Broadband wireless technology allows XO Communications to expand its network coverage in Seattle beyond its metro fiber network and fill a critical gap for businesses that require higher-speed network speeds but are constrained by the bandwidth limitations of current "last-mile" copper-based access connections or due to a lack of direct access to fiber. Today, last- mile copper connections often cannot scale above T-1 (1.5 Mbps) speeds to meet businesses' higher-bandwidth demands, while direct fiber access is available in less than 20 percent of buildings in the United States.

"XO's deployment of broadband wireless technology opens the door to a wider world of options for high-speed network access for businesses that are trapped because they are only served by copper or one local telecom provider," said Paul Merritt, general manager of the Seattle market for XO Communications. "This expansion of our network is part of our continuing focus to provide businesses with innovative high-speed network services and alternatives in the wake of a consolidating telecommunications industry."

    Coverage

XO Communications' broadband wireless coverage initially includes downtown Seattle. In the future, XO has the ability to deploy additional wireless hubs to reach qualified locations across the Seattle metropolitan area including Bellevue, Kenmore, Kirkland, Lynnwood, Mercer Island, Redmond and Renton.

Today's launch in Seattle expands XO Communications' wireless coverage to eleven major metropolitan areas across the United States following previous deployments in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, San Diego, Tampa and Washington, DC.

For more information or to speak with an XO representative in Seattle, call (206) 315-6398.

Atheros Launches Industry's Most-Integrated 802.11g Solution for Carrier GatewaysAtheros' Newest Single-Chip Design Lowers Cost of Wi-Fi in DSL Routers

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Atheros Communications, Inc. , a leading developer of advanced wireless solutions, today announced Atheros' AR2417 chip, the industry's most highly- integrated, cost-effective 802.11g solution for home gateways. The compact, single-chip solution is the newest member of the company's seventh-generation AR5007 family. With the AR2417, Atheros has enhanced its most popular selling solution ever, the AR5005G, through significantly increased integration while delivering Atheros-class wireless LAN (WLAN) performance the company's customers have come to expect. Through its industry-leading integration, the low cost, single-chip solution for mini-PCI and cardbus designs significantly reduces the rest of bill-of-materials (RBOM) by 30-45 percent compared to competitive solutions.

While Atheros' XSPAN(TM) draft 802.11n solutions are leading the technical innovation curve, the company is also investing in solutions that meet the continuing consumer demand for 802.11g wireless technologies pervasive in mainstream PCs and routers, and that are increasing in DSL gateways. Today, home gateway solutions based on 802.11g technology provide ample performance for basic data networking and web surfing, while the significantly greater throughput enabled by 802.11n networks is required to deliver triple-play services - data, video and voice - throughout the home. From a volume perspective, IDC projects that 802.11g will account for more than 60 percent of total WLAN units through 2008 (1). Atheros expects the AR2417, a simple, low-cost Wi-Fi add-on to existing DSL and xDSL gateway products, to advance the adoption of its low-cost WLAN in home deployments.

Like its predecessor, the highly successful AR5005G, which has achieved more than $100 million in shipments since its introduction, the new AR2417 integrates the media access controller, baseband processor and 2.4GHz radio onto the single-chip design. In addition, the AR2417 now delivers greater value by integrating the low noise amplifier (LNA) and power amplifier (PA) onto the low cost, digital CMOS system-on-chip.

The AR2417 offers the added benefit of its innovative 2-layer mini-PCI design, the industry's smallest form factor at half the height of existing solutions. The new, compact size reduces the printed circuit board (PCB) cost by 50 percent and RBOM component count by more than 40 percent over the previous generation's 4-layer design. As a result of these enhancements, Atheros enables easy, low-cost implementation of Wi-Fi technology in existing DSL and xDSL residential gateway designs.

"More than half of all Wi-Fi products shipped worldwide are based on 802.11g, and we expect this trend to continue for the next few years. The AR2417 improves on our previous, incredibly popular 802.11g PCI solution to satisfy the demand for simple, low-cost, wireless data networking in the home," said Michael Stauffer, director of marketing for the carrier business with Atheros. "With the AR2417, we are delivering the ideal, turnkey 802.11g solution to our DSL customers to provide the easiest route to low-cost Wi-Fi in home gateways."

The AR2417 includes two development kits, which provide simple upgrade paths from previous Atheros 802.11g PCI platforms. The first kit includes a 2- layer, half-height mini-PCI design for WLAN gateway applications. The second kit includes a 2-layer, single-sided cardbus for aftermarket wireless PC cards. The AR2417 provides support for Windows XP, 2000 and Vista for cardbus clients and Linux for APs. The solution offers advanced security that supports WPA/WPA2 Personal security, EAP 802.1x authentication and an AES encryption engine. The design also features JumpStart for Wireless(TM) compatible with the Wi-Fi Protected Setup(TM) standard for simple network configuration. Like all Atheros WLAN solutions, the AR2417 also supports the 802.11e Quality of Service standard.

    Product Availability

The AR2417 chip is currently in volume production and shipping to leading retail and carrier customers. For more information, please visit: http://www.atheros.com/pt/AR5007G.htm.

Sow Before You Reap - CCID Deciphers Latest Intel Move in China

BEIJING, April 9 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong, analyzes Intel's latest move in building a wafer plant in Dalian, China.

On March 26, Intel announced that it will invest $2.5 billion to build a wafer plant in Dalian, China. The new plant will adopt the world's most advanced 300mm wafer precaution technology. The factory will not only be Intel's biggest investment in China but also the first Intel wafer plant project in East Asia.

To decipher Intel's decision in setting up a wafer plant in China, CCID looks into the growth environment and trend of the global computer industry.

In the fiercely contested computer industry, multinational companies represented by Intel actively participate in global competitions and define the industry's developments and trends. As economic globalization gathers pace, multinational companies have notably sped up their overseas expansion and global resources integration. Integrating the most competitive production resources and investing and setting up factories in target markets to get closer to end-users are of great strategic significance for lowering cost and improving product competitiveness. Thanks to its huge market demand, low-cost production elements (labor, land, talent resources), solid industry foundation and production capacity, China has won a favorable position in industry transfer. China's fast-growing economy and information industry have also made multinational companies to reassess the value of the Chinese market. For them, China is no longer just a concept of sales market. More and more multinational companies are now shifting their R&D, manufacturing and other infrastructure industry chains to China. Intel's decision to build its 8th wafer plant in China precisely embodies the above development trend of the computer industry. It is the result of Intel's move to adapt to the trend and speed up global competitions and resources integration.

CCID Consulting considers that by setting up a factory in China, Intel will seize the first opportunity to increase production capacity and cultivate the market. The move will also produce a profound impact on its future competitions with AMD.

In the next few years, the global PC market will continue to maintain a growth momentum. By building a wafer plant in China, Intel can directly expand its production capacity and supply products to main board and PC makers in China. It will eliminate the possibility that its competitors will get market chances due to its own supply problems. As the demand for PCs continued to grow, Intel's chipsets were in short supply in late 2005 and mid- 2006. The direct result of this was the hot sales of AMD's processors and chipsets, forcing Intel to lower its product prices.

Secondly, to win competitions with AMD in the future, Intel can no longer count on traditional strategies such as product and price competitions. The resources inputs will play a more decisive role. The so-called resources inputs include not only support for vendors but also the support provided by the Chinese government for the industry and technology. With its factory in Dalian, Intel's total investment in China will reach $4 billion. This shows Intel's determination and confidence in investing in the Chinese market. It is good for Intel to get support from the concerned government department, establish a good image in the Chinese market and get more opportunities in China. This is precisely what the old proverb says: to sow before you reap. Surely, Intel knows about it very well.

CCID Consulting thinks that despite its limited role in pushing forward the development of China's semiconductor industry, Intel's move is nevertheless of certain significance. The wafer plant, which Intel is to build, will no doubt be integrated into China's semiconductor industry. It will therefore raise the product output and upgrade the product structure in China. What is more significant is that Intel's factory in China will make certain contributions to IC talent training in China and help the country to develop its own IC industry.

WD Introduces New Hard Drive Family for Fast-Growing, Demanding Audio and Video MarketsNew Technologies Increase Reliability to 1 Million Hours MTBF, Offer Cooler and Quieter Operation and Lower Power Consumption

LAKE FOREST, Calif., April 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Western Digital Corp. today announced a new family of hard drives for audio and video recording products, one of today's fastest growing digital storage markets. Drawing on its expertise as a leading supplier to major consumer electronics and surveillance manufacturers worldwide, WD has designed its new 3.5-inch WD AV hard drives with technologies that provide the increased reliability, cooler and quieter operation and low power consumption required for these demanding environments. The WD AV drives in capacities ranging from 80 GB to 500 GB are available through the company's distribution network.

"WD has been a high-volume supplier of best-in-class drives to our video recording OEM customers since the digital video recording market was in its infancy," said Jim Welsh, vice president and general manager, Branded Products and Consumer Business units. "As the market for drives designed specifically for these applications has expanded, so has the number of end-product manufacturers worldwide. The best way to serve this diverse and growing customer base is to offer our new WD AV drive directly and through our distribution network."

    WD AV Hard Drives

The high capacities, high reliability and cost effectiveness of hard drive technology have enabled a range of audio and video recording applications, including digital set-top boxes, personal video recorders, IP gateways and mainstream surveillance systems. These applications, which often demand 24x7 operation from hard drives, have different requirements than personal computers, such as higher reliability, universal compatibility, low power consumption and the ability to simultaneously record multiple audio and/or video streams. Consumer applications such as set-top boxes and DVD recorders place additional demands on hard drives to consume less power, generate less heat and operate quietly.

Reliability That Can Be Counted On

With advanced features, WD AV hard drives are built specifically to operate in 24x7 environments, where the drive is always on, streaming audio and video content. WD AV drives are rated for reliability at one million hours MTBF, which is higher than standard desktop drives.

WD AV drives incorporate WD's ramp load feature, which parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down and when the drive is not operating. Contrary to drives without ramp load, the feature in WD AV drives improves non-operational shock tolerance and ensures that the recording head never touches the disk surface, reducing head and surface wear and enhancing long-term reliability.

WD's preemptive wear leveling (PWL) frequently sweeps the drive arm across the disk to reduce uneven wear on the drive surface, which is common in audio-video-streaming applications.

    Smart Power Reduction

WD's unique IntelliSeek(TM) technology proactively calculates an optimum seek speed to eliminate hasty movement of the actuator that produces noise and requires power, which is common in other drives. With IntelliSeek, the actuator's movement is controlled so the head reaches the next target sector just in time to read the next piece of information, rather than rapidly accelerating and waiting for the drive rotation to catch up. This smooth motion reduces power usage of WD AV hard drives by more than 60 percent compared with standard drives, as well as quiets seek operation and lowers vibration. Additionally, the ramp load feature reduces power consumption during spin up and the drive's electronics have been optimized to save power for audio and video applications.

    Quiet as a Mouse

In addition to the sound-reducing properties of IntelliSeek and ramp load, WD utilizes multi-stage formed stainless steel top covers and precision- designed base castings that minimize sound levels for consumer sound-sensitive applications. The result is WD AV drives emit less than one sone, which is virtually below the threshold of human hearing.

    High Definition Multitasking

Smooth audio-video recording and playback of today's high-definition content is essential for consumer PVR applications. The SilkStream(TM) technology in WD AV drives effortlessly delivers those qualities in as many as 12 simultaneous high-definition streams(1) and is based on the industry- standard ATA specification for universal compatibility. Mainstream surveillance video recorders save images at a slower pace than high-definition video, and in that application WD AV hard drives record up to 16 standard- definition streams.

    Compatibility

To ensure broad compatibility, WD AV drives have been tested in a wide range of audio and video products including set-top boxes, DVD recorders and mainstream surveillance systems.

WD AV drives are currently available with EIDE and SATA interfaces in capacities ranging from 80 GB to 500 GB through WD's worldwide distribution network.
