Gemalto Technology Empowers World's First Secure SMS-Based Mobile-Payment Service

    AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, April 10 /PRNewswire/ --

    - Belgium's BASE Leverages Gemalto Highly Secure M-Payment Solution

Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), a world leader in digital security, today announces it is providing Belgian mobile operator BASE with a comprehensive solution which allows its subscribers to perform secure payment by just sending an SMS. This revolutionary service is extremely convenient, as it enables consumers to pay with their mobile phone anytime, anywhere, quickly and easily. Always available, it also permits merchants to get paid immediately. Gemalto supplied BASE with a mobile payment application compatible with third generation SIM cards, incorporating the m-banxafe technology designed by Banksys, the company behind the authorisation, security and guarantee of electronic payments in Belgium. Gemalto also provided the specific personalisation services required to guarantee the highest levels of security for SMS-based transactions. The service went live on March 20, 2007.

This mobile-payment capability targets all kinds of practical services such as home deliveries, taxi rides or baby-sitting. Through an easy-to-navigate menu, the payee enters a payment request into his mobile phone. The payer receives this request, specifying the amount and the name of the payee, on his handset screen and accepts the transaction by entering the secret code he selected at service activation. Then both the customer and the merchant receive an SMS confirming the transaction.

The m-banxafe technology enables a link between the SIM card and the subscriber's banking card and account. During the activation process, the customer selects his mobile payment PIN code through the menu of his mobile phone. Then he inserts his banking card into the point of sales terminal of a BASE shop or into an ATM. He just has to select the activation option of the menu to create the link between his banking details and the PIN code on the SIM card. Banksys' m-banxafe enables reloading of the calling credit and live access to the account balance. This application has been designed in cooperation with all Belgian banks, ensuring the same level of security as that achieved with a banking card. From now on, all new Base subscribers will be issued an m-banxafe-enabled SIM card.

"We are delighted to welcome BASE customers to our new highly secure remote mobile payment service thanks to the new generation of BASE' SIM integrating our m-banxafe technology," commented Vincent Roland, CEO of Banksys. "The collaboration between Belgian Telecom operators and banks will allow us to capture cash transactions in new markets in which up till now the cards weren't accepted. This will be a benefit for all actors of the economy."

"We are very pleased to support BASE in rolling out this compelling service and bring our expertise in advanced card technology, which definitely plays a crucial role in securing future mobile payment applications," added Jacques Seneca, president Europe at Gemalto. "This innovative payment means is perfectly in line with people's lifestyles nowadays. Whether at home or on the move, they want flexibility, convenience, quick and easy access to secure mobile services. Gemalto offers solutions that make things safe and simple for users."

    AMSTERDAM, Pays-Bas, April 10 /PRNewswire/ --

Certicom Suite B Power Bundle for nCipher HSMs to deliver complete hardware and software support for Elliptic Curve CryptographyStrength of elliptic curve cryptography meets government and commercial security requirements

MISSISSAUGA, ON, April 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Certicom Corp. (TSX: CIC) today announced a partnership with nCipher to provide Certicom's Suite B Power Bundle products for nCipher hardware security modules (HSMs). This will allow nCipher and Certicom customers to quickly comply with the U.S. government's Suite B specifications. The need for stronger security is driving the demand for elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), which is recommended by the U.S. government and is also being adopted by industry to protect valuable information.

ECC is a computationally efficient form of cryptography - an essential building block in security applications - that offers equivalent security to other competing technologies but with much smaller key sizes. This efficiency results in faster computations, lower power consumption, as well as memory and bandwidth savings, thereby making it ideal for today's servers and enterprise applications. Because of this efficiency, organizations can meet growing security requirements, and reduce the number of servers required to manage the cryptographic keys. For example, depending on the hardware platform used, ECC can provide better than a 10:1 performance advantage over RSA and reduces the number of servers required by 7.5:1.

"By offering an ECC-enabled HSM with Certicom's Suite B Power Bundle software tools customers can easily adopt best practice and use hardware to protect their ECC applications as well as having access to the most advanced key management tools available," said Dr Nicko van Someren, chief technology officer at nCipher. "The partnership with Certicom ensures that our customers will have the most efficient and secure implementation of ECC available and be compliant with the latest government standards."

ECC is used in a growing number of sectors ranging from consumer electronics, wireless devices and semiconductors to government and financial services. In 2005, The National Security Agency's (NSA) recommended ECC as the public-key cryptosystem to protect classified and unclassified government communications. These recommendations, known as Suite B, are part of an initiative to upgrade the security infrastructure of the government's communications to meet present and future security needs.

"ECC security technology meets the demanding requirements of many customers, including the U.S. government," said Bernard Crotty, president and CEO of Certicom. "The nCipher partnership provides our government and enterprise customers with a range of deployment options allowing them to develop end-to-end ECC solutions with the highest performance implementations available and hardware protection from the most trusted name in the market."

Under the agreement, nCipher will provide the first high-speed ECC-enabled HSMs on the market and Certicom will provide Suite B software tools for developing complete ECC applications.
