AT&T Announces a Hosted, Fully Integrated Application Acceleration ServiceAT&T Is the First Managed Services Provider to Integrate Its Network and Hosting Services Into a One-Stop Solution for Web Application Performance
SAN ANTONIO, June 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. today announced AT&T Application Acceleration, a fully managed offer integrated into its global Internet Protocol (IP) network and Internet Data Centers that speeds the performance and responsiveness of Web-based applications. The service dramatically improves the end-user experience for these applications, allowing businesses to interact more effectively with their online customers and improve the productivity of employees and suppliers.
Available today to AT&T Enterprise Hosting customers, AT&T Application Acceleration combines global IP networking technology with AT&T managed services and tools to provide a one-stop solution that overcomes slow or unacceptable response times from today's complex Web-based applications. Not only does the service make Web applications work faster, but it also allows businesses to get more efficient use from their available Web server, Internet access, or Virtual Private Network (VPN) resources.
Unlike other acceleration solutions, AT&T Application Acceleration is based on open standards. This allows it to operate transparently to users without requiring custom Web application coding, special Web browser versions or settings, proprietary networks, or equipment located at end-user sites. Moreover, the service manages requests for dynamic Web content where the content resides -- in an AT&T Internet Data Center (IDC) -- by positioning Web traffic manager equipment in conjunction with Web servers and the rest of a customer's hosted Web application infrastructure. As a result, AT&T Application Acceleration balances service requests more effectively, reduces slow response times and increases application throughput for all users, both on the Internet and on corporate intranets.
AT&T offers an array of flexible and comprehensive Web hosting services through its network of global IDCs with plans to expand its complement of centers to 38 by the end of 2007. As part of the fabric of the AT&T network, these IDCs provide a robust onramp to the network for the hosted application acceleration service, as well as options for connecting via alternative Internet Service Providers (ISP) for additional flexibility or backup.
"As companies today increasingly rely on Web-based applications to power both customer-facing and back-office business processes, the performance and user experience of these applications have become critical to business success," said Steve Caniano, vice president, AT&T Hosting Services. "Solutions to accelerate application delivery exist in the marketplace, but many IT shops lack the experience with these technologies to get the best use out of them. AT&T addresses these problems by being the first managed hosting provider to integrate a fully managed application acceleration solution with its global IP network and complement of worldwide Internet Data Centers."
AT&T Application Acceleration helps businesses provide better customer service and complete more e-commerce transactions since most buyers typically will abandon a business's Web site due to slow response times. The service also can enhance interactions with business partners, channels and suppliers -- especially those in geographically dispersed or overseas locations -- as well as improve employee productivity by speeding workflow and reducing manual workarounds. And as a fully hosted solution, AT&T Application Acceleration requires no upfront capital costs, special staffing, training or equipment tooling.
"With more enterprise applications moving to the Web, end users are experiencing bottlenecks because client and server applications don't often transition easily to a Web-based environment," said Lydia Leong, Research Director, with Gartner. "In most cases, optimizing an enterprise with application acceleration technology requires a level of expertise that some businesses don't possess, so they are increasingly looking to service providers to help them manage their network infrastructure to get the enhanced application, server and Wide Area Network performance."

Texas Instruments and Network Physics Collaborate to Deliver Optimized End-User Experience for IP-Based ServicesCompanies to Deliver Deep Visibility and Intelligent Action Solutions to Manufacturers of IP Equipment and Devices
DALLAS and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) and Network Physics, the leader in real-time application performance insight, today announced a far-reaching development initiative centered on delivering optimized end-user experiences for VoIP and IPTV services. Designed around TI's PIQUA(TM) quality management system, the partnership will further help service providers and enterprise IT managers deliver important real-time visibility into performance related problems and provide automated corrective actions that can be deployed to mitigate some of the challenges with delivering IP-based services.
"TI's PIQUA system is a standards-based, embedded capability in IP endpoints, including CPE devices and access and infrastructure media gateways, which gathers and reports real-time operational and experiential data from equipment used to deliver services such as VoIP and IPTV," said Debbie Greenstreet, director of service provider strategic marketing, Texas Instruments. "Working with Network Physics, our PIQUA system automates the process of gathering IP endpoint performance metrics and converts this data into real-time actionable information, improving the delivery of IP services. The results of our alliance will include improved user experience and a reduction in overall network operating costs."
Based on TI's digital signal processor (DSP) technology and embedded software solutions, TI's PIQUA system utilizes sophisticated, real-time calculations to instantly assess quality parameters related to the user's experience, allowing both equipment manufacturers and service providers to automatically and dynamically adapt to changing conditions and make adjustments, which today are either impossible or done manually. The integration of PIQUA software with the NetSensory Solution Insight for VoIP 2.0 from Network Physics is done via standard protocols such as RTCP-XR by communicating call quality metrics, including TI RTCP-XR extensions for reporting echo quality metrics. The NetSensory tool combines valuable endpoint information and correlates it with other network data to provide network operators and enterprise IT managers with an outstanding set of metrics for actionable and rapid resolution, ensuring high quality services. In addition, this unique insight greatly reduces the need for further testing equipment with a real-time view into business application performance.
The NetSensory Solution Insight for VoIP overcomes problems associated with typical voice monitoring solutions by integrating standard voice quality metrics with more than 60 performance and utilization metrics. The Solution Insight for VoIP delivers real-time, integrated management of both voice and data applications from an easily-installed appliance, without the need for agents, probes, or synthetic handsets. It has the ability to drill down from industry-standard voice quality metrics to the underlying network conditions responsible for call degradation, measure the impact of other enterprise applications on voice traffic, and judge how other applications are affected by the network changes made to support voice.
"Successfully delivering VoIP and IPTV requires deep, real-time analysis of underlying network conditions that can potentially impair the delivery of these services" said Kenny Frerichs, President and CEO at Network Physics. "The whole point of deploying VoIP is to run voice across the network just like any other application, but voice and network management tools aren't always up to the task. The marrying of TI's PIQUA technology and the NetSensory Solution Insight for VoIP seizes the full advantage of the PIQUA system by creating a solution that optimizes services based on true end-user experiences and provides exceptional insight into application performance."

Training the Class of 2007: SkillSoft Offers Five Tips for Delivering a Dynamic, Engaging Learning ExperienceDeveloping and Honing the Skills of Graduates Entering the Workforce Requires a New Approach to Training and Development
Nashua, N.H., June 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With a new crop of graduates around the country entering the workforce for the first time, SkillSoft PLC , a leading provider of e-learning and performance support solutions for global enterprises, government, education and small to medium-sized businesses, today outlined five tips for effectively training the Class of 2007.
The learning styles and habits of this generation have been strongly affected by a number of factors, including their vast experience using technology, their constant bombardment by rich, multimedia content and the seemingly effortless way in which they multitask while using a diverse range of digital media. As a result, in order to build the necessary foundation in job skill proficiency, while successfully cultivating the leaders of tomorrow, SkillSoft recommends that businesses provide the Class of 2007 with learning experiences that are:
1. "Multiple-media"-driven - Because the Class of 2007 grew up with
televisions, computers, video games, DVDs and personal music devices,
their brains are wired to receive visual and audio stimulation, often
coming from multiple sources simultaneously. Raised on the
sophisticated programming techniques of television and video games,
they have high expectations for all forms of communication and expect
highly produced, entertaining experiences. While not all training can
or should be created with entertainment value as a primary objective,
it is a good practice to intersperse multimedia learning and training
resources that incorporate graphics, audio and video in addition to
standard text.
2. Interactive - Recent graduates entering the workforce expect
interactivity as part of their learning experiences, whether it takes
place in the classroom or online. As a result, static PowerPoint
presentations, packets of handouts and lectures no longer are the best
way to deliver information/learning. Companies that want to engage
their young employees should supplement static training with
simulations and other forms of learning that require active
participation. Multi-path gaming techniques, for instance, put
learners in control, enabling them to freely navigate a simulated
workplace (complete with virtual colleagues, ringing telephones and
documents on the desktop) to analyze and solve business problems.
Virtual classroom sessions can also be used to bring together groups of
learners to interact and discuss topics that have been covered in
online self-study.
3. On-Demand - At their peak while multitasking, this generation doesn't
have the interest or attention span to sit through an entire course
from beginning to end. Instead, they prefer to learn by consuming
small, digestible bits of information - a section of an e-learning
course, a specific chapter within a reference work or a two- to three-
minute video. Organizations can cater to their comfort by making these
various learning assets available on-demand. Supported by strong
search functionality, employees can easily pinpoint exactly the
information they need, precisely at the moment they need it.
4. Integrated - While classroom training will always have a role in
professional development, learning, for the most part, should not be a
discrete event that removes employees from the workplace. Rather,
organizations should bring learning to the learners, making it an
inherent part of the workday that is easily accessible via the
corporate intranet or portal. This affords employees the flexibility
to pick and choose, cafeteria style, the exact combination of
information resources they need for the work at hand, ensuring greater
retention, productivity and improved performance.
5. Mobile - Constantly on the go, this generation is reliant upon portable
devices like cell phones, Blackberry(R) and Treo(R) to do everything
from making phone calls and checking email to browsing the internet and
playing games. Organizations can take advantage of the growing
ubiquity of portable devices to make learning assets that were
traditionally only available at the office accessible to workers,
regardless of their location, so that they can capitalize on downtime
to develop new competencies or hone existing skills. In addition,
podcasts provide another effective mechanism for learning on the go, as
information on business issues, trends and initiatives can be
downloaded to laptops, iPods and other MP3 players for quick, easy
consumption.

For Faster Summer 'Surfing,' Verizon Offers New Customers in New York Hot Broadband at a Cool New PriceConnection Speeds Up to 20 to 50 Times Faster Than Dial-Up Now Available for $14.99 to $19.99 a Month as Part of Special Promotion
NEW YORK, June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Sending vacation photos over a dial-up Internet connection can seem to take longer than the vacation itself. Verizon is making it easier for families in New York to advance from slow dial-up services to a speedy Verizon broadband connection before summer vacations get started.
"Nearly 30 million digital cameras were sold in the U.S. last year, and summer is the season for family photo-taking," said Michelle Minus Swittenberg, Verizon vice president of sales and marketing for the New York region. "We're making it easier for families to quickly share digital photos and stay more connected by offering Verizon High Speed Internet service at a special introductory price. Now families can stop struggling with slow dial- up service by getting Verizon broadband with connection speeds up to 20 to 50 times faster for a price that's comparable to, or less than, what they already pay."
Qualified Verizon phone customers who sign up for Verizon High Speed Internet service (based on DSL technology) before July 31 can get a 12-month price of just $14.99 a month for connection speeds up to 768 Kbps (kilobits per second), whether they subscribe online, call a Verizon service representative or purchase through one of Verizon's retail partners. Or, they can choose a higher-speed service of up to 3 Mbps (megabits per second) for an introductory price of $19.99 a month for the first six months when ordered online with an annual service plan.
Verizon High Speed Internet Gives Families More
In addition to faster photo sharing, Verizon High Speed Internet offers families many advantages over dial-up services, including the ability to be online and use their phone at the same time, so they no longer miss important calls while enjoying the Internet. Unlike some Internet services that are delivered over a network that's shared by everyone in the neighborhood, Verizon High Speed Internet comes directly into a customer's home on a dedicated line. The service includes an extensive collection of features and services, all enabled by Verizon's network that 100 million people rely on every day. These features include:

The suite automatically updates every three hours, for continuous protection against the latest online threats. The cost is just $4.99 a month for use on up to three household computers.
* Better online gaming from Verizon. Play hundreds of the most popular PC games for free with Verizon Arcade, or choose from a variety of Verizon Games on Demand packages, including Family Place, a package that features more than 400 family-friendly casual games for just $7.99 a month.
* Better entertainment for kids of all ages with Disney Connection, a safe, ad-free environment that offers a selection of Disney games, activities and video, such as full-length episodes of TV shows from Disney Channel, Toon Disney and Playhouse Disney. Verizon broadband customers also now benefit from full access to Playhouse Disney Preschool Time Online and Disney Game Kingdom Online at no additional charge (a $99 retail value).
* Better news from ABC News Now, an innovative 24/7 news and information network delivering live video news streams, plus original lifestyle, news and entertainment programs packaged in insightful, 15-minute shows for "news snacking."
* Better sports from ESPN360, the high-speed Internet video service that gives subscribers exclusive and live sporting events including basketball, football, wrestling and hockey; behind-the-scenes footage and interviews; premieres of ESPN Original Entertainment programs; video games and extended highlights; and unique coverage of big events like U.S. Open Golf, figure skating, soccer and the XGames.

Expedia.com Unveils Inaugural Ranking of the World's Best HotelsExpedia Insiders' Select List Empowers Travelers with Trusted Hotel Insight to Make Confident Travel Decisions
BELLEVUE, Wash., June 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Expedia.com(R), the world's leading online travel company, today unveiled the Expedia(R) Insiders' Select(TM) list of the world's best hotels (http://www.expedia.com/insiderselect). The list ranks hotel properties based on several factors, the most significant of which is Expedia.com Traveler Opinions(R), the largest collection of qualified traveler reviews on the Web. Now, the millions of travelers who visit Expedia.com every month to shop for travel can easily identify the hotels in their destination that have received high marks from fellow travelers for the value and experience they deliver.
"Expedia.com is committed to delivering the tools and information that help people book their trip and travel with confidence, knowing they've selected the best hotel for their trip," said Paul Brown, President, Expedia, Inc. Partner Services Group and Expedia North America. "The Expedia Insiders' Select gives our customers another powerful way to find the perfect hotel by harnessing the trusted insight of millions of travelers, and the destination expertise Expedia enjoys by having hundreds of employees in local markets across the globe."
The Insiders' Select list formally recognizes the hotels that consistently deliver excellent service, a great overall experience and a notable value. The hotels on the Insiders' Select list represent the top one percent of the more than 70,000 hotels Expedia.com offers. The list showcases the world's rich diversity of travel destinations, as well as the variety of accommodations Expedia travelers can choose from, ranging from the 4-star colonial-style Cozumel Palace All Inclusive in Mexico (#1) to Budapest's all-suite Starlight Suiten Hotel (#13).
Methodology
To compile the Expedia Insiders' Select list, Expedia developed a mathematical formula weighing several components, the largest of which is Expedia.com's collection of more than 300,000 Traveler Opinions, created by Expedia.com travelers who have recently completed a hotel stay. Expedia combined the Traveler Opinions data with insight from hundreds of employees in destinations throughout the world.
1. Traveler Opinions(R): Expedia.com's Traveler Opinions program delivers
the insight of Expedia.com travelers who have the opportunity to review
properties they book on Expedia after their stay. To ensure
authenticity, Expedia verifies each Traveler Opinion by confirming
that the reviewer has stayed at the property within the past six
months. Hotels on the Insiders' Select list must receive a cumulative
average rating of 4.0 or higher.
2. Destination Expertise: Expedia has nearly 300 market managers on the
ground in local destinations worldwide who provided their local market
insight and first-hand knowledge of the best hotels within their
market. In providing their input for the list, these employees were
asked to identify those hotels they would recommend to friends or
family traveling to their destination, bringing a personal touch
to the science behind the Insiders' Select list.
3. Value: Expedia compared hotels and resorts to others within the same
category and location to determine which provided the best value for
the money. This measure helps ensure the Insiders' Select list includes
hotels that deliver not only great overall experience but also a
notable value.
Travelers shopping for the top ranked hotels in their destination can visit http://www.expedia.com/insiderselect for the full list and to search the Insiders' Select list by location and star-rating, or look for the Expedia Insiders' Select symbol next to the hotel property name while searching hotels on Expedia.com.

Open Text To Demonstrate Latest ECM Solutions for Libraries at SLA ConferenceFederal Reserve Bank of New York and Open Text Conduct Joint Presentation on the Challenges of Integrating Access to Diverse Content Types in Libraries
CHICAGO, June 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Open Text(TM) Corporation , the largest independent provider of enterprise content management (ECM) software and solutions, today announced that it will be exhibiting the latest in ECM solutions for libraries and participating in a key presentation on how libraries can integrate access to their physical collections with access to the growing range of digital content at the upcoming Special Libraries Association (SLA) 2007 Conference, June 3-5 in Denver, Colorado.
Libraries face unique challenges with the explosion of online information and Web-based technologies. The difficulty is providing easy, centralized access to this growing array of content, in both electronic and physical forms. What libraries need are software solutions that can manage and provide a consolidated point of access to all types of content. With this integrated approach, libraries can build and manage hybrid collections where books and journals, coexist with documents, images, archival content, electronic resources, and even media.
Kyla Whitt, Law Library Administrator at Federal Reserve Bank of New York, which utilizes Open Text's library solutions, and Carol Knoblauch, who leads Open Text's solutions for libraries, gave a joint presentation on integrating access to library collections at SLA, June 3, which they will present again during a webinar following the conference, on June 26th. The presentation focuses on how the Law Library has been able to integrate access to content through its Online Patron Access Catalog (OPAC)
According to Whitt, "Today's online world, with Google and other resources, has created more demanding users for libraries. They want faster access to accurate and meaningful information. We created OPAC to address these challenges and provide more complete access to information so that users have an easier time finding what they need. Using the system, for example, users can not only retrieve a catalog record, they can also view and search the full-text of digital content attached to a record. Patrons searching for books can retrieve the full table of contents, introduction and preface; they can search, download and print the full text of government documents."
Whitt points out that OPAC serves a dual function, serving as a central place for online research and acting as a secure, long term repository for its diverse and growing collection of digital resources.
Open Text's Library Solutions
Open Text offers a range of specialized ECM solutions designed to help corporate library customers offer centralized access to digital documents and objects, Internet resources, multimedia and print materials and other content in a library's physical collection. The company's solutions include Livelink ECM - Library Management, a Web-based, integrated application for managing library resources and automating daily library operations. The solution streamlines day-to-day operations with a set of sophisticated modules to manage patron access, cataloging and maintenance of library materials, circulation processing, serial publications and administration of the purchasing process for published materials. For more information on Open Text's Livelink ECM - Library Management solutions, go to: http://www.opentext.com/library
Open Text at SLA
Open Text will be exhibiting at the conference in booth # 920. The company will demo several solutions, including its Archival Collections solution, designed to manage huge archives of historical and cultural materials; a solution that allows libraries to "push" information on their collections via RSS feeds; and its latest search and records management offerings. Ask.com Unveils Ask3DNew Ask.com Combines Powerful New Search Technology with an Innovative Design to Give People What They Need, Faster
OAKLAND, Calif., June 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ask.com(R), a leading search engine and wholly-owned business of IAC , today unveiled Ask3D, a completely re-engineered and redesigned version of Ask.com. Ask3D includes powerful new search technology, an innovative three-panel design, and unique new features that give people what they need, faster. With the new version of Ask.com, people get the most relevant and customized information they need from the best range of content available, including videos and music clips, and makes it all immediately accessible on one page. Ask3D replaces the previous version of Ask.com and is now available at http://www.ask.com/.
"The new Ask.com is a complete redefinition of the search experience," said Jim Lanzone, CEO of Ask.com. "On average, it takes people four queries to find what they are searching for online. This is because search engines have forced people to wade through endless lists of links, and refine query after query, to find the right information."
"Ask3D reduces the amount of hunting and pecking it takes for people to find what they need. We do this by delivering the right information, from the deepest range of content, all on one clean and simple page. With Ask3D, we are taking a leap towards the future of search."
Customized Results
Ask3D understands that no two searches are ever the same, therefore no two search result pages should be exactly alike. "Morph," Ask3D's new algorithmic content-matching and ranking technology, is the underlying technology that delivers the most relevant content for each search query, and places that content onto one single page. Morph chooses from content of all types, including Web pages, images, video, music clips and news, and transforms the page to each individual query.
Morph technology works in tandem with Ask.com's unique ExpertRank algorithm, which determines the most relevant search results by identifying expert communities on the Web instead of simply displaying links by popularity. The combination of Morph and ExpertRank enables Ask.com to understand each person's needs and provide them with what they want, faster.
More Information, Elegantly Displayed, All On One Page
Ask3D's innovative three-panel design displays more customized results, taken from the best range of content available on the Web, all on one page. Representing the three dimensions of search, Ask3D's panels include:
-- "Query Expression" in the left panel. This panel serves as the search
"control panel," where people can quickly refine their search without
ever having to leave the page by offering automatic suggestions to
help narrow, expand or find related search terms. This service, called
"Zoom Related Search," is the number one most-used feature on Ask.com
and relied on for more than 30 percent of all searches;
-- "Results" within the center panel. Here, people can find their primary
search results with links to Web pages and immediately preview sites
directly from the results page by using an upgraded "Binoculars"
feature, saving significant time and effort. Binoculars let people
preview a Web page and are now 50 percent larger and faster than
before. They also offer information such as the number of pop-ups on a
given site, whether or not a site is Flash-based, and the amount of
time it will take a site to load on a 56K connection. The top of this
panel also shows the top Smart Answer, which provides quick snippets
of information to help people get what they need, faster;
-- "Content" within the right panel. This panel provides people with
valuable information that goes beyond standard links to Web pages. The
right panel offers a wide variety of content including images, news
items, blogs, weather, time, videos and music clips. People can even
preview videos and listen to music clips, right from the results page.
Where most other major search engines serve ads in this area, Ask3D
delivers even more content and continues to offer the fewest number of
ads on a page.
Enhancing the Search Experience with New Innovations
Ask3D offers people additional new tools and features to make their search experience faster and easier:
-- An All-New Homepage. Ask.com has a new homepage and offers customizable
backgrounds that let people choose from a variety of designs to
personalize their search experience. This summer, people will be able
to upload their own images to customize their backgrounds even further.
The new Ask.com also now features bold icons on the homepage to make it
easier for people to search for specific content such as images, news
and blogs. Additionally, Ask3D now offers search suggestions to help
people more easily find what they need.
-- See and Hear More, Right From the Results Page. People can now see
video previews, listen to music clips, or even search through specific
content such as images and news, all from the main results page. By
simply hovering a mouse over video images, people can now preview video
clips without having to navigate away from the page. People can listen
to a music clip by simply clicking on the name of a song within the
Ask3D results page. Also, Ask3D offers an image rollover feature, which
enlarges an image so that people can see it in more detail.
-- Location-Based Results. Ask3D now offers Smart Answer search results
based on a person's location. When people use Ask3D to search for
"Starbucks," they will see the locations nearest to them. When
searching for "Gwen Stefani," Ask3D lets people know when she is
performing locally.
-- Introducing Video Search. Now on Ask.com, people can find their
favorite videos and preview clips right from the search results page.
People can also filter results by video types, such as Flash, QuickTime
and RealPlayer, or by length.
-- Finding Images, Faster. With new filtering capabilities, people can now
sort images by a wide range of categories including size, Buddy Icons,
color, black and white and various media types.
