Tektronix Announces Next Generation Service Assurance Platform for Converged NetworksTektronix Takes Established UA Platform to Next Level to Address Multi-Service, Multi-Technology Performance Monitoring
BEAVERTON, Ore., June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Tektronix, Inc. , a leading worldwide provider of communications network management and diagnostics solutions, announced the next generation of its market-leading Unified Assurance platform to address the service assurance performance monitoring and management needs of multi-technology, multi-service fixed and wireless network operators. Unified Assurance for Converged Networks (UACN) provides end-to-end service level views for all user sessions across multiple access and core network technologies.
Building upon its successful VoIP performance management solutions, the Tektronix UACN platform will initially focus on voice services delivered over IP next generation networks. The UACN framework is highly extensible and will include support of video, mobile, data and legacy networks and services in subsequent releases.
"Service providers are evolving their performance monitoring strategies from an element and alarm management approach to a service level performance and quality of experience focus," said Doug Dickerson, Vice President and General Manager, Network Management, Tektronix. "As they make this transition, service providers are dealing with tremendous complexity. They have services that run across multiple networks, including converged IP networks, and they need visibility from one end to the other. With UACN, we have taken an innovative and proactive approach to meeting service providers' evolving performance monitoring and management needs. We will continue to evolve UACN to match our customers' changing needs for managing next generation networks and advanced services to help them differentiate themselves."
Today's communications market is fiercely competitive. With the transition to network convergence, operators can stay competitive by rapidly offering personalized, value added services to their customers, while reducing operating costs and effectively managing capital expenditures. UACN represents an evolution in flexibility, scalability and usability that will better equip service providers with monitoring solutions that enable this transition by providing real-time visibility into service performance, customer quality of experience and customer response to new services. With this information, operators are brought closer to their customers, enabling them to have greater control over their revenue streams.
UACN: Framework for a Converged Network Performance Monitoring Strategy
Leveraging its experience in delivering network, service and customer assurance solutions to mobile and fixed operators around the world, Tektronix' UACN framework has been designed to match service providers' network and OSS transformation initiatives by providing a complete end-to-end view of service level performance across different networks. The UACN framework incorporates all of the advanced features supported by Unified Assurance applications available today and substantially builds on them to better support the business, analytics and operational needs of service providers.
UACN's Orion Service Assurance for Voice Services will enable operators to measure the performance of voice services delivered to their customers, including determining uptake rates, failure rates and performance trends over time for specific target markets and sub-markets. In addition, impact analysis tools give operators information on the extent to which markets and customers are affected by network issues. Unlike other monitoring systems, UACN Service Assurance for Voice Services supports the real-time informational needs of business processes for multiple departments within the network operator's enterprise -- from operations, to network planning and engineering, to marketing and sales.
A new application to the UACN framework is the Interconnect Services module that allows extended visibility of voice service performance for calls that transit into or out of the operator's network over IP next generation networks. The Interconnect Services module incorporates features tailored to help service providers monitor and manage the quality of services delivered to or received from interconnect partners and key wholesale customers over application layer or IP peering arrangements in next generation networks. Features include:
-- Proactive, quantitative reporting of interconnection performance by
destination and carrier
-- Proactive traffic monitoring to ensure high levels of ASR, NER and MOS
are maintained to maximize billable minutes and customer satisfaction
and mitigate regulatory and service related complaints
-- Ability to assess route quality filtered by country code, region and
carrier to identify opportunities and alternatives for least cost
routing
-- Quick analysis of service and network problems through the drill down
capability into the Failed Call Log Summary and Call Trace
The UACN framework applications are presented and managed through a new, user-friendly, customizable GUI that offers a complete array of service-specific performance indicators for easy assessment of service status, along with the ability to quickly drill down to underlying network issues. Continuously updated service performance summary displays of KPIs can be viewed side by side with graphical views of select KPI performance over time. Reports, alarms and alarm groups can also be easily customized and personalized through dashboard "portlets" and securely accessed using standard web browsers.
UACN incorporates an advanced software architecture built on SOA and NGOSS principles and provides open interfaces for rapid integration with third-party legacy applications to more easily support OSS transformation initiatives. As functionality is added to the UACN platform, matching the current mobile and fixed network, service and customer assurance applications, existing customers will be able to easily migrate from their existing UA implementations to take advantage of the increased functionality and usability UACN provides.

Verizon Wireless to Support Hawthorne Run Against Domestic Violence on June 24Runners & Spectators Urged to Donate No-Longer-Used Cell Phones To Verizon Wireless HopeLine(R) Phone Recycling ProgramCompany Pledges $5 for Every Phone Collected
MORRISTOWN, N.Y., June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless is teaming up with the Hawthorne Domestic Violence Response Team to support the Run Against Domestic Violence, a 5K run and family walk, slated for Sunday, June 24, starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Hawthorne Library, 345 Lafayette Avenue.
Runners and spectators are encouraged to bring no-longer-used cell phones and accessories to donate to the Verizon Wireless HopeLine(R) phone recycling program. Collection boxes will be located at the race registration area near the library. For each phone collected, Verizon Wireless will donate $5, up to $2,500, to benefit the Hawthorne Domestic Violence Response Team.
A recognized corporate leader for its commitment to preventing domestic violence and raising awareness of the issue, Verizon Wireless was the first wireless carrier in the nation to collect and recycle old cell phones and has done so since January 1999 - first in New Jersey and then across the U.S. The wireless equipment is refurbished or recycled in an environmentally friendly manner and the proceeds benefit domestic violence survivors.
Working in conjunction with the Hawthorne Police Department, the Hawthorne Domestic Violence Response Team was formed in 2003 to provide direct assistance to victims of domestic violence during emergency situations. The group has collected more than 2,000 used phones since it became an ongoing collection point for HopeLine in 2004.
"Each one of us can have an impact on someone's life," said David Samberg, community relations director for Verizon Wireless New York Metro Region. "Donating an old, unused cell phone is a simple act of kindness that can have a ripple effect. We thank the residents of Hawthorne for supporting HopeLine and its mission to help those who too often suffer in silence."
Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program has collected more than 3.5 million wireless phones, and given more than $10 million in cash grants and services, and nearly 400,000 phones to domestic violence prevention organizations. Local HopeLine grants include $5,000 recently donated to two Passaic County organizations -- Strengthen Our Sisters, a shelter and supportive service program for homeless, battered women and their dependent children; and WAFA House (Women Against Family Abuse), a privately run domestic violence crisis center based in Paterson that caters primarily to the needs of women of South Asian, Arabic and/or Muslim descent.
In addition to a successful phone recycling program and funding for non- profit domestic violence organizations, HopeLine includes free wireless service and voice mailboxes for survivors, community and corporate awareness initiatives, and a bilingual "Invest In Yourself" program designed to help survivors re-enter the workforce.
Donations are accepted at all Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in the New York Metro area. For store locations and additional information, visit http://www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.
To sign up for the Hawthorne Run Against Domestic Violence, go to http://www.hawthornedvrt.org/ to download a registration form. The entry fee is $25 for the 5K and $10 for the 1-1/2 mile Family Walk.

Market Requirements
Network infrastructure is evolving from being a simple, transport medium that focused on data routing and switching to an intelligent service delivery medium for voice, video and data traffic that needs to be application and content aware. Furthermore, intelligent services need to be delivered with end to end multi-layer security for secure communications and perimeter protection. Network Equipment OEMs use a combination of general purpose processors along with specialized embedded processors to implement systems that enable intelligent networks with secure, Layer 4 to 7 functionality. However, the software and hardware interfaces between the various silicon components are not optimized and require OEMs to develop custom software or experience bottlenecks in efficiency and/or performance.

The transition, benefiting more than 750,000 Houston-area cable television, high-speed Internet and phone customers, follows the dissolution of a joint venture between the two companies earlier this year.
To mark the switch, Comcast will enhance the channel lineup in the City of Houston and the 62 surrounding communities it now serves, launching nearly 20 new channels, including the NFL Network and five High-Definition (HD) networks from Comcast's industry-leading HD lineup. The transition will also bring newly branded Comcast trucks, signs and employee uniforms to the market, which stretches from Galveston to the Woodlands and from Baytown to Katy.
Tony Speller, named late last year as Senior Vice President of the Houston Region, said the transition sets the stage for the rollout of Comcast's innovative broadband video, high-speed Internet and phone products, enabled by an investment of more than $200 million in the market this year. This significant investment will also enhance the company's advanced fiber network and improve the customer experience.
Speller said, "The transition from Time Warner to Comcast is more than just a change in name on a technician's uniform, on a truck or on a building. It represents a true commitment to innovative products, a focus on improving our customers' experience and an ongoing dedication to the communities where our customers and our 2,700 employees live and work. We will work hard each day to earn the trust and satisfaction of our newest customers."
The five new HD networks that are available to Houston customers as of tomorrow include ESPN2 HD (Channel 293), MHD: Music High-Definition (Channel 296), Versus/The Golf Channel HD (Channel 294), Starz HD (Channel 415) and Cinemax HD (Channel 419). To view these networks in HD, customers must have a HD television set and HD-capable cable box as well as subscribe to the corresponding level of service. With these additions, Houston-area Comcast customers can now access 21 HD networks, a significant increase.
Other networks that will be added to the Houston lineup are NFL Network (Channel 113), GolTV (Channel 104), PBS Kids Sprout (Channel 128), Logo (Channel 160), MoviePlex (Channel 149), Indieplex (Channel 167), Retroplex (Channel 168), Flix (Channel 170), The Africa Channel (Channel 240), Gospel Music Channel (Channel 172), ImaginAsian TV (Channel 241), Fox Reality (Channel 250) and ESPN Deportes (Channel 513).
In addition to the new channels, Comcast will place several networks on more widely viewed tiers of service so additional customers can enjoy them, including ESPN HD, Universal HD, Independent Film Channel and the seven other movie channels that were previously in the Movies Plus package. The availability of each of these channels depends on the customer's level of service.
In the coming weeks and months, Comcast will launch several other products and services, including:
-- Comcast High-Speed Internet:
Beginning in mid-July, former Time Warner Road Runner customers will be
automatically converted to the Comcast network. The conversion will
bring customers faster Internet speeds of up to 6 Mbps, which is four
times faster than DSL and more than 100 times faster than dial-up.
Plus, customers will receive PowerBoost speed enhancer at no extra
cost, which uses additional capacity in the network to provide extra
bursts of speed when downloading and uploading large files, making it
quicker and more convenient to access large files like movies, music
and photos. In addition to the speed enhancements, Comcast High-Speed
Internet customers with a Comcast.net user name and password will
receive dozens of value-added features at no additional cost, such as
McAfee Security Suite, Rhapsody Radio, Video Mail and PhotoShow Deluxe
as well as access to Comcast.net, the company's award-winning broadband
portal.
After the high-speed Internet conversion is complete, customers will
receive an e-mail notification prompting them to complete an
easy-to-use online migration tool to help them:
- Select their user ID name and change their Time Warner e-mail domain
to comcast.net;
- Route e-mails sent to their old address to their new address through
the end of 2007;
- Carry over existing e-mails and address book information; and
- Notify the contacts in their address book of their new e-mail address
if they choose.
-- Comcast Digital Voice(TM):
Former Time Warner Digital Phone customers will be converted to
Comcast's innovative home phone service -- Comcast Digital Voice -- in
mid-July. Comcast Digital Voice is a highly reliable, fully-featured
residential phone service that offers digital quality service over
Comcast's privately-managed network, voice mail, 12 of the most popular
calling features, such as caller ID, call waiting and three-way
calling, online access to voice mail through the Digital Voice Center
and unlimited local and long distance calling, including to Canada,
Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, America Samoa and
Saipan/Northern Mariana Islands, for one low price.
-- Comcast ON DEMAND:
Comcast's signature ON DEMAND service will start to roll out later this
summer, offering 9,300 programs a month, including more than 150 hours
of HD ON DEMAND content along with a variety of movies, sports shows,
children's programs, music videos and interactive content. Customers
will be able to watch ON DEMAND shows whenever it is convenient for
them and have the ability to pause, fast-forward and rewind their
selections. The majority of ON DEMAND programming comes at no
additional cost to Digital Cable customers.

Terayon Launches CAP-1000, a New CherryPicker Application Platform to Drive Next Generation of Digital Video ProcessingDemonstrates Industry's First MPEG-4 AVC HD and SD Rate Shaping in Conjunction with Cable-Tec Expo
SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Terayon Communication Systems, Inc. , an Emmy Award-winning provider of digital video solutions that enable content localization on-demand, today announced the availability of the CAP-1000, a new member of its CherryPicker Application Platform (CAP) line that gives video service providers unparalleled efficiency and flexibility in managing and localizing video streams.
The Terayon CAP-1000 delivers the first platform to offer a software application for rate shaping of real-time, broadcast quality MPEG-4 AVC SD and HD streams. The CAP-1000 enables additional applications such as grooming, dejittering and seamless localized ad insertion, and has the performance needed to support mission-critical initiatives like Switched Digital Video, VOD Playlist Advertising, and Bulk Encryption. As with its gold standard DM 6400 CherryPicker platform, users activate applications on the CAP-1000 by purchasing software license keys.
Terayon will demonstrate MPEG-4 AVC HD and SD rate shaping, the first application for the CAP-1000, in conjunction with the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers' Cable-Tec Expo, held June 20-22 in Orlando, FL. The demonstration will take place in the Terayon suite at the Peabody Hotel on International Boulevard, directly across from the Orange County Convention Center.
"As operators vie for subscribers and advertisers, they require solutions that enable programming and advertising to be customized and delivered in a cost-effective way that does not compromise quality or reliability," said Jerry Chase, CEO, Terayon Communication Systems. "The CAP-1000 builds on our 10-year video development history and field-proven performance and reliability to enable operators to deploy the services subscribers desire, with the localization that is coveted by advertisers."
The CAP-1000 provides a highly programmable device that can support evolving technical standards and emerging application needs through simple software upgrades, allowing customers to realize continuous returns on their initial capital investment. The CAP-1000's operations-friendly design ensures the high availability needed for high stream counts with redundant and hot-swappable power supplies, hot-swappable fan trays (with temporary redundancy as needed), and field-replaceable input/output and processing blades, all in a space- and power-saving 1RU (rack unit) enclosure.
The CAP-1000 operates in converging IP networks with carrier-class reliability, and features massive processing power to handle up to 2Gbps of aggregate video stream throughput. To maximize flexibility, Terayon has abstracted the hardware elements of the CAP-1000 from the software layer, enabling delivery of features such as session-based encryption, digital watermarking, FEC, motion graphics overlay, video scaling, and even third party applications via future software releases.

Ditech Networks Provides Intelligent Codec Deployment While Optimizing Voice QualityDitech's purpose-built transcoding supports carrier voice services and increased customer satisfaction
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ditech Networks, Inc. , a leader in the development of voice processing solutions for communications networks, today announced that its innovative Packet Voice Processor(TM) supports more codecs worldwide than any other comparable platform. When coupled with Ditech's award-winning voice quality solution, VoIP service providers now can deploy and support a diverse set of codecs while optimizing voice quality.
Service providers rely on speech compression to manage the tradeoff between network capacity and voice quality. Supporting all the deployed codecs on core voice equipment such as media servers, conferencing servers, or voice portals, is complex and costly. Ditech's codec transcoding, combined with the company's voice quality measurement and assurance solutions, gives service providers the ability to intelligently deploy codecs to optimize the end-to-end customer experience.
"Carriers are facing increasing codec proliferation, as specific voice codecs have been developed for wireline VoIP, and wireless networks, with the intention of packing more calls into the same amount of bandwidth," said Stephane Teral, Principal Analyst, Service Provider VoIP, IMS and FMC. "The rapid growth of VoIP and fixed-mobile convergence means transcoding large volumes of traffic from one codec to another is becoming more important to ensure global connectivity. Additionally, the importance of transcoding will be increasing as it is part of the Media Resource Function in the IMS architecture."
Ditech's Packet Voice Processor supports transcoding and speech processing at the border of the network, as well as in the network's core. When deployed at the border, Ditech's Packet Voice Processor can convert almost any kind of codec deployed on access or peering links to a commonly used codec that supports the core network. This protects the core network from a proliferation of codecs, and makes the deployment of additional core voice services less costly.
"The codec transcoding capabilities integrated with Ditech's Packet Voice Processor solution offer service providers an efficient, dependable way of creating a consistent call experience," said Todd Simpson, Vice President of Marketing for Ditech Networks. "With our own large, diverse library of codecs and our core voice measurement and assurance solutions, we enable carriers to make cost-effective choices in how to extend high-quality voice services to customers."
Ditech's Packet Voice Processor supports a comprehensive range of codecs, including G.711, G.721, G.722, G.722.1, G.722.2 (GSM-AMR WB), G.723.1, G.726, G.727, G.728, G.729a, G.729b/ab, G.729e/g, Speex, iLBC (Internet Low Bit Rate Codec), iSAC (Internet Speech Audio Codec), GSM-HR (Half Rate), GSM-FR (Full Rate), GSM-EFR (Enhanced), EVRC (Enhanced Variable Rate Codec), SMV (Selectable Mode Vocoder), 4GV (Fourth Generation Vocoder), AMBE, BV16/32 (BroadVoice).
Please visit Ditech's booth at the NXTcomm show, #4819, June 19-21 in Chicago, Illinois, to hear a demonstration of Ditech's products.

While continuing to leverage legacy investments, carriers can achieve greater efficiency through link consolidation, local routing and core Signal Transfer Point (STP) traffic offload. SEGway IP-Edge's flexible routing options enable the service provider to select a routing schema tailored to their network topology. In cases where consolidated traffic monitoring and billing is required, SEGway's superior advanced routing capability allows service providers to direct all traffic to the core. Alternately, traffic may be processed locally by the IP-Edge, avoiding unnecessary traffic backhaul costs. IP-Edge's complete suite of standards-based interfaces allows any-to-any connectivity within a TDM, ATM or IP-based network, regardless of an operator's current STP vendor.
"To keep their competitive edge, service providers must maximize the value of their legacy TDM switches while simultaneously growing and evolving their network. Our advanced next generation solutions allow them to do just that by extending the reach of IP out to edge nodes," said Deb Brunner-Walker, Signaling Systems Group marketing director, Performance Technologies. "Traditionally, centralized message handling forced carriers to continually increase their investment in large core STP nodes. The wide install base of our SEGway IP-Edge has already changed the network's landscape by driving signaling intelligence to the edge of the network. Now, by deploying the enhanced SEGway IP-Edge, service providers can reduce expensive core STP growth by aggregating traffic onto fewer, less expensive IP links."
With its low capital, start-up and on-going lifecycle costs, SEGway IP-Edge helps both wireline and wireless operators maximize their return on investment. SEGway's rock-solid performance and powerful suite of features delivers seamless IP network evolution while preserving legacy investments.

IDG Survey Names BEA Systems #1 SOA Thought Leader Two Years in a RowBEA Again Beats IBM and Oracle and Proves to be the Vendor of Choice for SOA Adoption, According to IT Decision-Makers Surveyed; Only Market Research Study Comparing SOA Trends Three Years RunningCore News Facts1. BEA ranked number one in SOA thought leadership - again! (BEA 67%, IBM 63%).2. BEA ranked number one SOA vendor (BEA 51%, IBM 45%).3. Number one SOA deployment challenge is "lack of skills."
SAN JOSE, Calif., June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BEA Systems, Inc. , a world leader in enterprise infrastructure software, today announced that for the second year running, an InfoWorld survey conducted by IDG Research has revealed BEA's dominance over IBM and Oracle as the industry's top service-oriented architecture (SOA) thought leader. BEA also ranked number one over other IT vendors that respondents would consider for SOA solutions and services in the next 12 months. This marks the third year that InfoWorld and IDG Research have conducted this groundbreaking report on SOA market trends and represents a comprehensive view of how IT decision-makers have evolved their views on SOA projects and deployments since 2005.
Two-thirds of IT decision-makers surveyed (67 percent) named BEA as an SOA thought leader, while IBM and Oracle were named by 63 percent and 39 percent of respondents, respectively. Fifty-one percent of respondents named BEA as a company they would consider working with to deploy SOA solutions and services in the next 12 months, whereas IBM was named by 45 percent, and Oracle was named by 36 percent. The research also shows that the scope of SOA projects have progressed dramatically from 2005 through 2007, with enterprise-wide adoptions increasing from eight percent to 21 percent over the three-year period.
"It's great to see recognition from the market that BEA continues to lead the pack as an SOA innovator and thought leader," said Bruce Graham, senior vice president of Worldwide Consulting for BEA Systems. "It's also clear that more customers are seeing the benefits SOA can bring in terms of increased agility, innovation and cost reduction. Our goal is to continue to assist our customers in the most challenging areas such as SOA Governance, training and roadmap planning, as they make the transition to SOA-based architectures."
Seventy-two percent of respondents believe that the definition of SOA as "an IT strategy that organizes the discrete functions contained in enterprise applications into interoperable, standards-based services that can be combined and reused quickly to meet business needs" describes SOA well or very well.
The IDG survey also revealed that SOA adoption is gaining momentum with a steady year-over-year increase from 2005 and 2006. Nearly two-thirds (59 percent) of respondents said their company considers SOA a critical or high priority for the next 12 months, up seven percent from last year. In addition, 78 percent of respondents said SOA would be a critical or high priority for their company in the next three to five years.
Other key findings from the survey include the following:
-- Lack of skills or training, IT and business organizational barriers and
lack of best practice guidelines were cited as the top three challenges
in deploying SOA.
-- Lack of governance was cited as the leading inhibitor of SOA adoption.
-- One-third of decision-makers surveyed (33%) will reduce investment in
packaged applications due to SOA.

Survey Methodology:
IDG Research Services Group conducted the latest survey, which took place in December 2006 and January 2007 and was co-sponsored by BEA and InfoWorld. To conduct the survey, IDG Research recruited respondents by email. The sample for the study was selected from among a mix of InfoWorld's audience and BEA customers and prospects. Cookies were utilized to ensure one response per respondent. Qualified respondents were required to be:
-- Employed in IT management or in a corporate/business unit management
function or position at a company with 500 or more employees.
-- Currently evaluating, screening, planning, pilot testing or
implementing a SOA.
-- Involved with SOA initiatives and purchase decisions.
Out of 1,034 individuals who responded, 592 met all screening criteria. The margin of error is +/- 4.0 percent.
