Delphax Technologies' Imaggia Digital Print System Reaches Production Milestone Of 10 Billion Feet of OutputAwards of appreciation presented to major U.S. and Canadian partners
MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Delphax Technologies Inc. , a global provider of high-speed digital printing systems, observed a major production milestone for its Imaggia digital print system with year-end awards recognizing the role of the two companies primarily responsible. Delphax announced that the Imaggia, its premier sheet-fed digital press, has reached 10 billion feet of production since its introduction-nearly 1.9 million miles of high-quality printed material meeting the highest worldwide standards for non-impact MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) encoding for secure documents.
"We're proud of the production capability and reliability this milestone represents, and we salute our Imaggia customers for this achievement," said Dieter Schilling, president and chief executive officer. "We were honored to present commemorative awards expressing appreciation for our successful partnership with the two most extensive users of Imaggia presses -- Harland Clarke of San Antonio, Texas, and Davis + Henderson of Toronto, Ontario."
Harland Clarke Corp. is Delphax's largest Imaggia customer in a relationship beginning in 2000. Davis + Henderson, the leading supplier of personalized checks in Canada, has been a major Imaggia customer since 1998.
In San Antonio, Texas, the Harland Clarke recipients were Chuck Dawson, president and chief executive officer; Alan Westfall, executive vice president and chief operating officer; Bruce Tillotson, senior vice president of engineering; Joe Mengele, vice president check manufacturing; Carly Schmidt, communications manager and several other team members. The Davis + Henderson award was presented to Yves Denomme, vice president operations; Barbara McBurney, director of operations; Jack Carson, plant manager and several team members at the company's Markham, Ontario, facility.
"To give a sense of the scale of Imaggia output, we've used some illustrations that border on the astronomical," Schilling said. "Ten billion feet of production translates into approximately 120 billion checks, or 11.4 million miles of checks placed end to end. The space shuttle traveling at 17,000 miles an hour would need 28 days to travel that far -- a distance equal to 24 roundtrips to the moon. Stacked one on top of the other, 120 billion checks would reach a height of 40 million feet, or 7,576 miles -- equal to 32,000 Empire State Buildings."
The Imaggia is the world's fastest digital MICR-capable cut-sheet printer system with models featuring document throughput of 300 8.5x11-inch pages per minute. Cut-sheet printers are ideal for applications that require multiple base stock sources or variable overprint on pre-printed stock. They are also the logical choice where the print volumes are not large enough to justify the continuous roll-fed process. All of Delphax's cut-sheet solutions offer dynamic input collation to handle paper substrates of varying sizes, weights, and finishes.
About Harland Clarke
Harland Clarke is a leading provider of integrated payment solutions, marketing services and technology solutions. It serves approximately 14,000 financial institutions, as well as major investment firms, business-to-business clients, small businesses, and individual consumers. PPG Unveils Latest Styling Tool During Consumer Electronics ShowWorld-leading coatings producer introduces latest trends in color, aesthetics, finishes
PITTSBURGH, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- PPG Industries has announced it is unveiling Trendcast Styling Directions 3 -- the next generation in comprehensive color, finishes and technology for designers of consumer products during this week's Consumer Electronics Show. PPG's unique tool empowers designers creatively by enabling them to combine finishes and experiment with effects in ways that have never been offered.
According to Petra L'Abbe, PPG Global Market Manager, the introduction of Trendcast 3 was planned to coincide with the Consumer Electronics Show because the tool was created specifically for consumer products designers, who continue to face daunting challenges in regard to consumer appeal, functionality and production.
"The consumer is becoming more discerning and demanding every year, and the role of design and aesthetics continues to be a critical element in the success of new product development," L'Abbe said. "With Trendcast Styling Directions 3, we have the research and technology to offer new ways to combine color, aesthetics and finishes -- the special effects that can differentiate consumers' purchasing decisions. CES is the logical backdrop for the unveiling of this powerful tool."
According to the Color Marketing Group (CMG), a worldwide organization of color experts, the color of a product alone can increase brand recognition and is the reason customers choose one product over another 85 percent of the time. With Trendcast 3, designers can combine color, texture and aesthetics to create a finish with emotional impact that reflects current and future consumer trends.
Created by PPG's global color styling team, Trendcast Styling Directions 3 is the culmination of in depth strategic research by stylists based in multiple studio locations in the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific. The team monitors changes in various markets and provides cross-market trend intelligence to bring designers the latest in colors, aesthetics, special effects, textures and technology from around the world. The result is a portfolio of innovative tools developed by designers for designers, providing comprehensive coverage of global macro trends yet still allowing for regional individuality.
Because they work closely with PPG's technical experts, PPG's stylists can assure designers that coatings meet their performance and aesthetic requirements and are production feasible anywhere in the world.
"We have a reputation as world-class experts in color and coatings, and our role in the consumer products industry is evolving," L'Abbe said. "We have long offered designers much more than the latest color choices. PPG's technological capabilities and global reputation give designers assistance at all levels of the design and production process."
The new Trendcast Styling Directions 3 tool includes unique aesthetics that combine coatings with other finishing technologies as well as combinations of different coating technologies such as powder and liquid. The tool addresses the increasing emphasis on environmental consciousness with the inclusion of "green" technologies PPG has developed.

ESS Technology Receives Staff Determination Letter From Nasdaq
FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ESS Technology, Inc. today announced that on January 3, 2008 it received a Nasdaq Staff Determination letter indicating that ESS is not currently in compliance with Nasdaq's requirements for continued listing as set forth in Marketplace Rules 4350(e) and 4350(g) due to ESS's failure to hold its annual meeting of shareholders and to solicit proxies from its shareholders and that its securities are subject to delisting from the Nasdaq Stock Market. Flyback Converter Controller from STMicroelectronics Supports Both Fixed- Frequency and Quasi-Resonant Operating ModesCost-saving multi-mode controller also integrates input/output protection, PFC interface and adaptive UVLO in single chip
GENEVA, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- STMicroelectronics today announced a flexible and cost-saving new controller for high-performance flyback power converters, which can operate in either the Fixed-Frequency (FF) or the Quasi-Resonant (QR) mode -- the two principal operating modes used in flyback SMPS -- selectable by connection of a single pin -- thereby enabling manufacturers to stock and qualify a single component to meet the requirements of different applications. In addition, the chip integrates many protection capabilities commonly implemented with external components, and energy-saving features that help the designer to meet the most severe energy regulations.
The L6566 selectable multi-mode controller is suitable in applications such as flyback AC/DC adapters, TV and LCD monitors, small size LCD TVs, high end chargers, and in other consumer equipment such as DVD players and set-top boxes.
Under very light load conditions, in both operating modes, the chip enters a controlled burst-mode state at low frequency (a few hundred Hertz) with constant peak current, in order to minimize total power requirements and to comply with world-wide energy saving recommendations. The controller's quiescent current (less than 3mA) and on-board non-dissipative start-up circuit -- a product of ST's high-voltage process technology -- further improve the overall efficiency.
The IC is available in two orderable versions, L6566A and L6566B. The L6566A is designed specifically for converters supplied through a front-end Power Factor Corrector (PFC) circuit; it provides an interface to the PFC to turn off the regulator under light or no-load conditions and during all the fault conditions. The L6566B version is intended for applications where a front-end PFC is not used, and it includes an oscillator frequency modulation input to reduce EMI (electromagnetic interference) emissions, saving cost and size of the line filter when FF operation is selected.
On-chip input/output protection features include over-voltage (OVP), cycle by cycle over-current (OCP) and over-temperature protection (OTP), brownout protection, and inductor saturation detection (hi-cap mode OCP). An innovative adaptive under voltage lock out (UVLO) circuit prevents the possibility of intermittent operation which can occur under no-load conditions due to the possible IC's own supply voltage fluctuations caused by the transformer's parasitics. This high level of integration enables designers to reduce the number of external components, minimizing PCB area, reducing costs and increasing the reliability of the power supply.
The L6566 is available in volume now, in an SO-16 package, priced at $0.50 in quantities of 2500 pieces.

Verizon Wireless Expands Wireless Broadband Network to Southern New JerseyHigh-Speed Network Enhancement Gives Customers Access to Fast Wireless Internet, E-mail, Mobile Music, and Videos
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless announced the expansion of wide-area wireless broadband service to several towns in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties.
Verizon Wireless customers in Southern New Jersey can now access e-mail, corporate data, the Internet and more at faster speeds, check out video on their phones, download music directly to their handsets, and play 3D games through a recent enhancement to seven existing cell sites. The company's wireless broadband network allows customers to access e-mail on their laptops and PDAs, and V CAST Video and Music on their wireless phones.
As a result of the expansion, the following major towns and surrounding areas are now equipped with Verizon Wireless' high-speed wireless network: Tuckahoe, Woodbine, Dennisville, and Goshen in Cape May County, and Dorchester, Leesburg and Delmont in Cumberland County. The enhancement also provides continuous coverage along Routes 47 and 50, as well as additional coverage for Verizon Wireless customers who use the existing high-speed wireless service in both the Atlantic City and Philadelphia markets.
BroadbandAccess
This enhancement allows customers who use the company's flagship business data service, BroadbandAccess, to interact with Web-based applications, download music over-the-air, access to e-mail, everyday corporate data, the Internet, and more at speeds that are eight to nine times faster than before. For example, BroadbandAccess customers with Rev. A compatible devices can now expect average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits per second and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps, which means customers can download a 1 megabyte e-mail attachment -- the equivalent of a small PowerPoint(R) presentation or a large PDF file -- in about eight seconds and upload the same sized file in less than 13 seconds.
V CAST: Video and Music The company's wireless broadband network also enables its V CAST multimedia services, which offer customers the ability to download full-song tracks, play cutting-edge 3D games and stream video clips straight to the handset with top transmission speeds. With content updated daily, customers can watch dozens of on-demand videos, including breaking news, weather updates, sports highlights and the hottest entertainment clips.
With V CAST Music, Verizon Wireless has built a massive full-song mobile music store that contains more than 2.5 million songs-from well-known as well as independent artists-that customers can download over-the-air, directly onto their V CAST Music-enabled wireless phones.
Investment
The multi-million dollar expansion includes the installation of high-tech wireless hardware and software in wireless transmission sites throughout the region. Verizon Wireless has invested more than $40 billion since it was formed -- more than $5 billion on average every year -- to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. The company has invested more than $170 million this year to enhance and expand its network in southeastern, central and northeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware, bringing the network investment in the region to more than $1 billion since 2000.
Verizon Wireless was the first national wireless provider to commercially launch a high-speed wireless broadband network in the United States, which is available to more than 210 million people across the country.

ARRIS Introduces DOCSIS 3.0 EMTA and Cable Modems
SUWANEE, Ga., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ARRIS today announced the introduction of the Touchstone(R) TM702 Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter (EMTA), which provides converged voice and data service with data speeds up to 160 Mbps. As noted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, these speeds are critical to ensure cable operators maintain a competitive offering with which to combat telco fiber solutions.
Consumers demanding such advanced capabilities will also demand converged and simple-to-use home devices from their service providers. The TM702 EMTA enables MSOs to cost-effectively deliver on this expectation by bundling two lines of carrier grade VoIP telephone service with DOCSIS 3.0 bonded channel ultra high-speed capability. As MSOs continue to accelerate the roll out of triple play packages to their most valuable customers, the business case advantages of an integrated voice and data premises device becomes ever more compelling.

"ARRIS is extending its leadership in cable voice over IP with this DOCSIS 3.0-based EMTA product family," said Bruce McClelland, President of the ARRIS Communications Group. "We have developed our next generation of EMTAs and data modems as a direct response to cable MSO requests for increased speed and reliability, as they go head-to-head with competitors to serve their most demanding and profitable market segment."

Additionally, ARRIS offers a family of DOCSIS 3.0 data only cable modems, branded as WBM750. The WBM750 family of ultra high speed modems is the next generation of the highly successful pre-DOCSIS 3.0 WBM650 family which provide up to 160 plus Mbps of throughput speed to cable subscribers.

"Eddie's music has always pierced to the heart of human experience," explains Rocco, "and 'Into the Wild' follows a young man's passionate search for his own voice in a noisy modern world. As a filmmaker, I was eager to use this cutting-edge medium to put Eddie's inspirational words, image and music right into the audience's hand to evoke a meaningful, personal experience for each viewer."
"J Records is excited to team with Verizon in this unique mobile campaign which will bring Eddie Vedder's music to new fans," said Sean Rosenberg, director mobile marketing, RCA Music Group.
"What is truly unique about this endeavor," said Guy Endore-Kaiser, executive vice president marketing and creative advertising, Paramount Vantage, "is the convergence of the mobile platform with music, video and movie, allowing us to create new audiences for 'Into The Wild' and Eddie's soundtrack."
"Guaranteed" is an acoustic song inspired by the true story of Christopher McCandless, who, in 1990 at the age of 22, left behind a life of comfort to test himself against the wilds of nature. The song was written and performed by Vedder for the soundtrack of the Paramount Vantage release "Into The Wild," which features nine original tracks and two cover songs by Vedder. To date, the soundtrack has been nominated for numerous awards including: a Critic's Choice nomination for "Guaranteed" for Best Song; two Golden Globe nominations, one for "Guaranteed" for Best Original Song, and one for Vedder/King/Brook for Best Original Score; and a GRAMMY nomination for "Guaranteed" for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

About Into the Wild
Freshly graduated from college with a promising future, 22 year-old Christopher McCandless (EMILE HIRSCH) instead walked out of his privileged life and into the wild in search of adventure. What happened to him on the way transformed this young wanderer into an enduring symbol for countless people. Was Christopher McCandless a heroic adventurer or a naive idealist, a rebellious 1990s Thoreau or another lost American son, a fearless risk-taker or a tragic figure who wrestled with the precarious balance between man and nature? Each strand of his journey is woven into Sean Penn's screen adaptation of Jon Krakauer's acclaimed bestseller, Into The Wild, which is as much about the insatiable yearning for family, home and connection as it is the search for truth and happiness.

Marc Rocco's fearless and compelling films have captivated audiences and filmmakers for nearly two decades, garnering numerous awards and honors on more than 100 Top Ten Best Picture lists. Selected credits for Rocco include The Jacket (Writer and Co-Producer, 2005), Murder in the First (Director and Executive Producer, 1995), Where the Day Takes You (Director and Writer, 1992), Dream a Little Dream (Director, Writer and Co-Producer, 1989), and Scenes from the Goldmine (Director, Writer and Co-Producer, 1987). Recently, Rocco has written and developed several projects, including the much-anticipated biopic of the groundbreaking 1960s rock icon Janis Joplin, as well as The Winter Hill Gang, the epic story of the notorious Boston gang wars of the 1960s (the latter to be produced in association with Cruise/Wagner). Nation's Largest Dialysis Provider - DaVita - Launches One-of-a-Kind Diet Helper Online Nutrition and Meal Planning Tool for Late-Stage Kidney Disease Patients and CaregiversInteractive resource helps dialysis patients plan and follow customized diet plans by providing recipes, shopping lists and nutrition tracking to help support better patient outcomes
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- DaVita Inc., a leading provider of dialysis services for those diagnosed with chronic kidney failure and end stage renal disease, launched DaVita Diet Helper(TM) to make kidney-friendly meals easy to plan, prepare and track. This all-purpose online meal planning tool helps dialysis patients, their caregivers and renal dietitians and physicians plan proper nutrition based on 24 unique kidney-diet prescriptions. The tool also provides tasty, easy-to- prepare recipes, complete weekly meal plans, online grocery lists, and nutrition trackers that can be printed and shared with doctors and dietitians, making management of the renal diet more effective and improving patients' nutritional intake and quality of care.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020729/DAVITALOGO)
"The main goal of DaVita Diet Helper is to help patients stay healthy as evidenced by their lab results, fluid balance and good nutritional intake," said Sara Colman RD, CDE, DaVita(R) Nutrition Project Specialist. "DaVita Diet Helper is an easy way for patients to know what they can and can't eat and in what portions to keep their protein, potassium, phosphorus, sodium and fluids in check. Sticking to any diet is a challenge, but with DaVita Diet Helper it's a lot easier for our dialysis patients to stay on track."
Diet is an integral part of the treatment for managing chronic kidney disease and ensuring patients' overall health and quality of life. Because the kidneys can no longer filter and eliminate waste products and excess fluid, kidney diets are focused on maintaining adequate nutrition and keeping minerals and electrolytes in balance. Renal dietitians work closely with individual patients to create customized diet plans based on treatment type, disease stage and related conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
The renal diet can be difficult for patients who are accustomed to traditional beliefs about a healthy diet. Rather than focusing on fat and calorie intake, kidney patients need to focus on phosphorus, potassium and sodium intake, while getting adequate calories and protein, as well as limiting overall fluid intake.
Patients are finding the tool both easy and helpful. A patient and user of the tool, Bobbi, noted on the DaVita website that, "I've been on dialysis for four years, and food has always been an issue. This system has breathed new life in me! The recipes are not only fabulous, but there is such a variety! This makes it easy to stay on target!"
DaVita Diet Helper was developed in partnership with eDiets and took more than a year to complete. eDiets provided the customized nutrition analysis and tracking tools. DaVita dietitians helped eDiets dietitians create corresponding meal planning for the 24 unique renal diet prescriptions relating to differing amounts of phosphorus, potassium and sodium allowed in dialysis patients' diets. DaVita recommends that any patients interested in using this tool should consult with their healthcare team before changing their diet. DaVita Diet Helper can be accessed online at http://www.davita.com/diethelper.
In addition to DaVita Diet Helper, DaVita.com hosts a robust recipe section with more than 450 current choices that make it easier for patients to enjoy a variety of tasty food options. Recipes can be found at http://www.davita.com/recipes.

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Pennsylvania Library Association, National Constitution Center, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Penn State University were among 150 nonprofit groups in Pennsylvania to receive nearly $2.2 million from the Verizon Foundation in 2007.
The grants have enabled the recipient organizations to improve basic literacy skills, create new and diverse approaches to technology-based learning, and help domestic violence victims rebuild their lives.
The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications and one of the largest corporate foundations in the world, awarded a total of $67.4 million in grants last year.
"Our efforts are rooted in a century-old tradition of giving back to the communities we serve, guided by the firm belief that technology can have a profound and positive effect on social issues," said William B. Petersen, president of Verizon Pennsylvania. "Our foundation makes a positive difference by supporting and investing in the people and organizations striving to improve the quality of life in our communities - where our customers and employees live and work.
"That difference can be made in the progress of our children as they study to meet the challenge of learning and working in the 21st century; in the lives of millions of Americans with low literacy skills who are unable to complete a job application or even read a menu; and in the lives of men and women who live in abusive and deadly situations for whom a phone can open a line to hope," Petersen said.
Some of the other Pennsylvania nonprofits that received Verizon Foundation grants during 2007 included: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, NAACP Next Generation CDC, West Chester Public Library, Elwyn Institute, Cobbs Creek Environmental Education Center, Pennsylvania Statewide Latino Coalition, Kidzone Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania, Urban Leagues in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, Police Athletic Leagues in Philadelphia and Norristown, Women's Resource Center in Scranton, Avon Grove Library, WHYY, Victim Outreach Intervention Center (VOICe), Dauphin County EDC, ARC of Chester County, Jewish Family Service of Greater Wilkes-Barre, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County, Women's Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh, Independence Visitor Center Corp., Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania, St. Mary Medical Center, Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Association for Nonviolence, Auberle, North Penn Chamber of Commerce, Chester-Upland School District, Temple University, Wireless Neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Asociacion Puertorriquenos En Marcha, Easter Seals of SEPA and United Negro College Fund.
At year-end 2007, Verizon employees and retirees in Pennsylvania donated almost 40,000 hours and raised more than $1,135,000 for nonprofits while the Verizon Foundation matched approximately $927,400 through its matching gifts program. Under the foundation's Verizon Volunteer initiative, one of the nation's largest employee-volunteer programs, company employees and retirees also contributed nearly 3 million hours of community service nationally since Verizon's inception in 2000 and provided $29 million in combined contributions through this program.
The Verizon Foundation is committed to improving literacy and K-12 education; fostering awareness and prevention of domestic violence; and promoting the use of technology in health-care delivery. In 2007, the foundation awarded $67.4 million in grants to nonprofit agencies in the United States and abroad.
