Microsoft Aims to Create New Opportunity for Everyone Through EducationCompany expands the impact of Partners in Learning program over the next five years, reaching up to three times as many students, teachers and schools.
BERLIN, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Microsoft Corp. today announced a renewed commitment over the next five years to Partners in Learning, a program that provides the education community with resources and training to help students reach their full potential. Through Partners in Learning, Microsoft is leveraging the transformative power of software to create innovative educational experiences that remove limitations, create opportunities, and bring students and teachers closer. Since its launch in 2003, Partners in Learning has touched the lives of more than 90 million students, teachers and education policymakers in 101 countries. In the next five years, Microsoft is aiming to triple the impact of Partners in Learning's three core programs: Innovative Teachers, Innovative Students and Innovative Schools. Partners in Learning is a key education initiative under Microsoft Unlimited Potential, the company's commitment to creating sustained social and economic opportunity for everyone.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO )
"Microsoft has always believed that education is the cornerstone of opportunity, and that investing in education is the best way to help young people achieve their potential," said Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft. "Partners in Learning is one of the ways Microsoft works with governments and schools around the world to help teachers use technology in the classroom to make learning exciting and relevant for the 21st century."
"Actively integrating technology into the classroom takes more than just PCs; it requires the cooperation and input of those with expertise, vision and strong experience in all aspects of the educational process," said Cristian-Mihai Adomnitei, minister of education, research and youth in Romania. "Microsoft's continued partnership and guidance through Partners in Learning has been instrumental in the success of our programs to achieve better education through IT and in forming talents for a competitive economy."
The real impact that Partners in Learning has already had in transforming education is best shown by the stories of the individuals and communities affected by the program. One example can be found at the Arino Primary School, located in a village in Aragon, Spain, with a population of just 900 people. Head teacher Jose Antonio Blesa wanted to raise educational standards and motivate students by giving them access to online research and interactive learning tools. In partnership with Microsoft, he was able to provide his pupils with portable Tablet PCs linked to a wireless network. Now, final-year students use the PCs in most of their classes, transforming lessons into exciting interactive experiences and letting students learn at their own pace. The project's success encouraged the Ministry of Education in Aragon to provide an additional 14,000 Tablet PCs to its schools over the following three years; and six other regional governments in Spain have started to introduce similar programs in their local schools.
"The main goals of the Aragon government regarding this collaboration project with Microsoft are to foster the use of IT tools within the region, to provide advanced training to the 'teachers of the future' and to develop an online education network," said Eva Almunia, minister of education in Aragon. "In this respect, Aragon has become a reference across Europe in the application of information technologies to the education process."
Other Partners in Learning efforts have successfully scaled local programs to have nationwide impact. A 2005 report found that 34 percent of Hungarian students had no technology skills. Using a wide range of programs, from support for intensive teacher training to the development of 101 Ideas for Innovative Teachers, a booklet offering simple tips for technology-based lessons in 10 subjects, the percentage of students without technology skills was dramatically reduced to less than 8 percent by 2007.
An important element of Partners in Learning is connecting the global teaching community, allowing educators to share their ideas with their peers around the world. This is brought to life through the Innovative Teachers program, which includes one of the world's largest online collaboration portals for educators, and a series of worldwide conferences that bring them together to share ideas and reward exceptional teaching practices. One participant, Sweden's Brigitta (Bitte) Kajler, created a collaborative lesson on biodiversity that connected students in Sweden with children in Madagascar. The project gave students a deeper understanding of the environment as they learned important cultural lessons and technology skills, providing an opportunity for them to learn from and interact with their peers in another part of the world.
In addition, the Innovative Students program provides affordable, reliable software to qualifying governments purchasing Windows-based PCs for primary and secondary students' personal use at home. Finally, through the Innovative Schools program, Microsoft works with governments, educators and partners to deliver expert guidance in holistic school reform, plus a road map for technology integration to help schools meet their education objectives.
Today's announcement represents a new, five-year, $235.5 million (U.S.) investment, and will bring the company's total 10-year commitment in Partners in Learning to nearly $500 million. Ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to learn is an enormous challenge that requires participation by both the public and private sectors. Microsoft is deeply committed to collaborating with education partners around the world to provide relevant, high-quality learning experiences, and enable students and teachers to achieve their fullest potential.
Additional information, including a video sharing the story of Jose Antonio Blesa and the Arino Primary School, will be posted at http://www.microsoft.com/unlimitedpotential.

l'internet.
(Logo : http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server.
L'offre d'Aalter a

Verizon to Expand Its FiOS Fiber-Optic Network to 48,000 Additional Homes in Portland, Ore., Metro AreaBoring, Orient, Happy Valley, Damascus and Sunnyside to Join Other Oregon Communities Getting Company's Industry-Leading Fiber-to-the-Premises Network; Camas and Washougal, Washington, Also Added
BEAVERTON, Ore., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon announced plans Tuesday (Jan. 22) to deploy its advanced all-fiber-optic network all the way to customers' homes and businesses in areas east of Gresham along Highway 26 and across the Columbia River in Clark County, Washington.
The company said it will extend the network this year to the communities of Boring, Orient, Damascus, Happy Valley and Sunnyside, as well as Camas and Washougal in Washington. It also will continue its network expansion in the Washington County and the east Multnomah communities of Gresham, Troutdale, Fairview and Wood Village, as well as McMinnville in Yamhill County.
A total of 48,000 additional homes will be connected to the network, which delivers FiOS Internet service at download speeds of up to 30 mbps (megabits per second) and upload speeds of up to 15 mbps, along with crystal-clear voice and more than 250 channels and 10,000 on-demand titles from FiOS TV. Below are the numbers of households in each community that will be added to the network:
Community Households
Beaverton 3,200
Boring/Damascus Area 13,500
McMinnville 6,800
Forest Grove 1,900
Gresham Area 7,000
Tigard 3,800
Tualatin 1,300
Other 500
Camas/Washougal 10,000
Total 48,000
The network, known as fiber to the premises, or FTTP, uses hair-thin strands of fiber and optical electronics to directly link to homes and businesses and replaces the traditional copper-wire connections for voice, high-speed Internet and TV.
"FTTP is the state-of-the art network that enables our FiOS Internet, TV and voice services," said David S. Valdez, the company's vice president for the Northwest. "We'll reach more than 270,000 households and small businesses in Oregon by year-end and add 10,000 more in Camas and Washougal.
"Verizon has lived up to its promise of bringing competition and choice to consumers in the metro area with everything from superior-quality FiOS TV to symmetrical FiOS Internet service where customers can get 15 megabits per second download and upload speeds," he added.
Verizon launched its FiOS TV service in Oregon in mid-December, and it is now available to most communities in Washington County, as well as the cities and unincorporated areas near Dundee, Newberg and McMinnville in Yamhill County.
The company is currently negotiating with the Mount Hood Cable Commission to secure a video franchise agreement so it can offer FiOS TV this year to the communities of Gresham, Troutdale, Fairview and Wood Village.
More than 8.5 million homes and businesses in parts of 16 states are now passed by Verizon's all-fiber network, and the company expects the network to pass about 18 million premises by the end of 2010. Verizon had 1.3 million FiOS (FYE'-ose) Internet customers and 717,000 FiOS TV customers at the end of the third quarter of 2007.
FiOS Internet service includes: state-of-the-art, wireless broadband home router; Verizon's Surround entertainment portal optimized for high-speed access featuring news, games, streaming video and more; virtually unlimited 2 GB (gigabytes) of e-mail capacity with up to 9 e-mail accounts; 24 x 7 live technical support; and 30-day money-back guarantee.
FiOS TV service highlights include:
* FiOS TV Premier, the lead offer, with more than 250 all-digital
channels for $42.99 per month.
* 27 high-definition channels with extraordinary clarity and theater-
quality sound.
* A library of more than 10,000 on-demand titles, 60 percent of which are
free.
* Channels grouped by genres such as entertainment, sports, news,
shopping, movies and family, making it easy for audiences to find their
favorite programming.
* An interactive media guide that helps customers quickly and easily find
and enjoy content from TV listings, video-on-demand catalogs and
digital video recorders (DVR) as well as personal music and photos from
a home network.
* Set-top boxes ranging from a standard-definition box for $4.99 per
month to the Home Media DVR, featuring a multi-room DVR that enables up
to three simultaneous viewings of recorded programs without requiring
customers to set up a complex home network or buy extra equipment. The
recorder is bundled with Media Manager, a new feature that lets

Verizon Wireless to Host Open Development Conference March 19-20, 2008 in New York City
BASKING RIDGE, N.J., and WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless today announced that the company's much-anticipated Open Development Conference will be held in New York City on March 19-20, 2008. The announcement was made by Anthony A. Lewis, Verizon Wireless' newly-appointed vice president of the Open Development initiative, during a panel discussion today hosted by New America Foundation. Information about Verizon Wireless' Open Development initiative is online at http://www.verizonwireless.com/opendevelopment.
News of the conference, which will focus largely on development for new devices to run on the award-winning Verizon Wireless network, comes just eight weeks after Verizon Wireless announced that later this year it will provide customers the option to use, on its nationwide wireless network, wireless devices, software and applications not offered by the company. Verizon Wireless' Open Development initiative is driven by the company's desire to encourage innovation, give customers wireless choices, and quickly address opportunities to expand the wireless market. Higher data speeds and throughput performance that will come with the rollout of its fourth generation broadband network will open the door to a surge in new consumer electronics enabled by wireless connectivity.
Verizon Wireless is structuring the conference for the development community. The company encourages developers from the device community to attend the two-day event, where they can learn about the technical standards needed for devices to run on the Verizon Wireless network.
"This initial conference is for developers of devices -- because before consumers can have open access, you have to have open development," said Lewis. "In hosting this conference, our aim is to jump start the development community by sharing information needed to develop devices for our network that achieve our network performance goals while making it easy for them to deliver devices."
Lewis also indicated that while the company is listening to a segment of customers who want another choice without full service, Verizon Wireless will continue to make available a full-service offering -- from retail stores where customers can shop, to 24/7 customer service and technical support, to an easy-to-use handset interface and optimized software applications.

Advantest's Integrated SoC Tester/Handler Test Cell Wins 2008 Best in Test Award
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Advantest Corporation announces that its integrated T2000 LS Mainframe and M4841 Dynamic Test Handler -- the company's high-performance SoC Test Cell -- has won a 2008 Best in Test Award.
Introduced at Semicon West 2007, Advantest's T2000 LSMF/M4841 Test Cell was selected by the editors of Test & Measurement World magazine, as a Best in Test product for its innovation and contribution to the field of electronics test, measurement and inspection.
High-Volume Capability in a Unique Configuration
Advantest is the only ATE company that has for decades designed and manufactured its own handlers and interfaces in addition to its test systems and software, and is uniquely qualified to tightly integrate and optimize the entire test cell. Advantest's SoC test cell solution is unique for its single-vendor tester-handler integration, bringing highly parallel, high-performance turn-key testing capabilities to SoC consumer device manufacturing.
This singular SoC consumer device test solution supports parallel testing of 16 high-pin-count consumer devices with throughput of up to 18,500 units per hour. The T2000's OpenStar-compliant architecture offers ultimate scalability and flexibility and the test system's proprietary liquid-cooling design enables high-performance of the 26-slot test head, which accommodates instrument modules for a variety of testing: RF, audio, baseband, and data-conversion.
The M4841 is also designed for maximum flexibility and high performance. It handles a variety of packages, has extremely high throughput and reliability, and features proprietary innovations such as Advantest's Soft Touch technology, which uses an electro-pneumatic air-pressure technique to avoid damaging extremely miniaturized parts during touchdown.
Test and Measurement World magazine, which announced the 2008 Best in Test awards in its January, 2008 issue, is now collecting ballots for the Test Product of the Year. Votes can be cast via http://www.tmworld.com/awards. Polls close February 15 and the winner will be announced on April 1.

Women More Likely to Turn to Internet Than Friends or Family For Health InformationStudy Finds 60 Percent of Women Rely on the Internet Versus 51 Percent Who Consult Friends, Family or Significant Other
RESTON, Va., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- comScore, Inc. , a leader in measuring the digital world, today released results from a recent study showing that -- second only to consulting physicians -- women turn most often to the Internet for health information. Eighty-five percent of women using the Internet have researched women's health issues online while two out of three (63 percent) have used the Internet specifically to learn about birth control options.
The study was designed to help explain how women choose their birth control method, how they view alternative methods and ultimately whether their online activity influences their offline decisions. comScore surveyed 921 women between the ages of 18 and 44, who had been heterosexually-active in the past six months and had used a form of prescription or over-the-counter birth control.

Friends, Family and Significant Others 51%
"Traditionally, women have relied on friends, family or a significant other for health-related information, including sexual health and contraception," said Carolina Petrini, comScore senior vice president. "But today, with the influx of newer-generation birth control methods and non-traditional pill regimens, more and more women are turning to the Internet to sort through the clutter and organize their findings. As is true in many other areas of healthcare, the consumer has become much more proactive. She wants to be informed of all of her choices, and she is relying on the Internet for answers."
User-Generated Content Represents Opportunity
As the number of women using the Internet for health information increases, the importance of user-generated content ("UGC") also becomes vital -- providing women with the opportunity to engage in health conversations online. The comScore study evaluated the use and appeal of UGC -- such as blogs, forums, or chatrooms -- among women seeking birth control information online. Study findings showed that a third of respondents have consulted birth control-related UGC, with more than 40 percent being open to the idea. These insights confirm the already popular industry trend toward more online health discussion.

Drivers and Deterrents in Choosing Birth Control
With regard to factors influencing women's birth control choice, survey respondents said effectiveness was the most valued attribute. However, only nine percent said they have objected to various forms of birth control because they believe them to be ineffective. In fact, the two main reasons respondents would not consider a specific form of birth control are perceived side effects (45 percent) and inconvenience (42 percent).
The study findings also showed that perceptions about side effects and inconvenience varied across the many forms of birth control. For example, some survey respondents said they would not consider switching to the birth control pill, hormonal injections, patches and implants because of perceived side effects. Alternatively, some respondents said they would not consider vaginal rings and diaphragms because they perceive them to be inconvenient or difficult to use.

Vaginal Rings (n=420) 64% 22% 4%

"The findings suggest that because women generally believe birth control to be effective across forms, their decision making process is largely based on their perceptions about side effects or inconvenience -- which can differ from form to form," said Ms. Petrini. "It is important for healthcare professionals and manufacturers of birth control products to understand these differing perceptions and behaviors so they can more effectively communicate with consumers and dispel misconceptions about a specific form of birth control."

Trancontinental Media sites now powered with Nstein's Web Content Management solutionLeading Canadian magazine publisher re-launches its flagship site canadianliving.ca and boosts its visitors from 400,000 to 1 million per month using Nstein's solution for online publishing
MONTREAL, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Nstein Technologies Inc. http://www.nstein.com/ (TSX-V: EIN), a leader in online publishing solutions for newspapers, magazines and online content providers, announced today that Transcontinental Media, Canada's largest publisher of consumer magazines, migrated two of its most popular sites onto Nstein's Web Content Management (WCM) solution.
Transcontinental Media chose its flagship site Canadian Living (http://www.canadianliving.ca/) and French lifestyle site Le Bel Age (http://www.lebelage.ca/) to be the first sites for the deployment of Nstein's solution. Because of its robust yet flexible framework, Nstein's WCM was selected since it allows Transcontinental to rapidly go online with new business initiatives such as microsites, providing new advertising revenue opportunities.
Other key factors that led Transcontinental Media to adopt Nstein's content management system were: a LAMP architecture that significantly reduces IT costs and external dependencies, a native XML structure simplifying the consolidation of complex legacy data and a built-in search engine.
While Transcontinental reinforced the implementation of best SEO practices, the deployment of Nstein's WCM framework now enables the organization to easily publish high volumes of content and rapidly increase content visibility and availability for search engines. Since the re-launch of canadianliving.ca in October 2007, reports have shown a tremendous increase in website traffic, boosting from 400,000 unique visitors per month to nearly 1,000,000.
"As we moved into the next generation of Web technologies, we wanted to unify our processes into one centralized platform and ensure the autonomy of each site," said Zouhaire Sekkat, Vice-President, Digital Media, Transcontinental Media. "Nstein's WCM provides a framework where content can be easily published, reused and shared across our properties. We are glad to benefit from Nstein's e-publishing expertise-helping us to heighten our online visibility and create a more pervasive experience of Transcontinental Media's brands across our paper and digital properties."
"By moving its flagship sites onto our platform, Transcontinental Media has shown its confidence in Nstein's ability to increase traffic and stickiness with our web content management software," said Luc Filiatreault, President and CEO of Nstein Technologies. "We look forward to the next few months when migration of other web properties of Transcontinental Media will be rolled out using Nstein's WCM."

Smooth Global (China) Holdings, Inc. Announces Renewal of Contract with China Unicom Group Beijing Branch for PayPhone Business in 2008
BEIJING, Jan. 22 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- The Smooth Global (China) Holdings, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: SMGH) ("SMGH" or "Company") a leader in providing International Call Forwarding Service in China, announced today that the Company is negotiating with China Unicom Group Beijing branch to extend and improve the contract for its PayPhone Business from 2007. We are expecting favorable terms for our future expansion not only in payphone area but other telecommunication value added services as well.
When a customer uses the payphone or VoIP phone to make a call, the usage fee is calculated and charged by the number of pulses (one minute intervals) made in accordance with the government fixed tariffs or government guidance tariffs, whichever is applicable. QTC, one of our subsidiaries, immediately bills and receives the usage fee from the customers and the independent collection agent centralizes the cash proceeds from each payphone and deposits into the bank on a daily basis, across the network. China Netcom and QTC monthly calculates the share of QTC's revenue on the varied basis from 40% to 60% of the usage fee received from the customers, depending upon the usage of the customers. The independent collection agent is then authorized to remit the total proceeds of usage fee to China Netcom, and QTC immediately invoices its share of revenue to China Unicom.
Ms. Zheng Shuying, President of SMGH, commented, "We are pleased to continue our good relationship with China Unicom Group Beijing branch and extend our contract from 2007 to 2008. The renewed contract will improve our financial result and we also negotiate with other brand name Companies in China to extend their contracts and provide additional services. The Company will announce details of these contracts near term. Since we merged last year, we have developed our business faster than we were expecting and improved our position as leading Company for International Call Forwarding in China."
About Smooth Global (China) Holdings, Inc.
Smooth Global (China) Holdings, Inc. was organized under the name Bralone Mining Company (the "Company") under the laws of the State of Nevada on December 2, 1998. On November 2, 2006, The Company acquired all of the outstanding capital stock of Gold Profit (Asia) Group Limited ("Gold Profit"), which owns 100% of the registered capital of Beijing Quan Tong Chang Information Service Limited ("Beijing QTC"). Beijing QTC is a telecommunications service provider to deliver economical voice and data services domestically and internationally throughout China. It engaged in the business of distributing telephone services through public pay phones and is also in the business of developing Internet phone solutions for commercial customers, focusing on a convenient local, domestic and international long distance call service with competitive price. On July 31, 2007, it changed its name to Smooth Global (China) Holdings, Inc. The Company contracted with the subsidiaries of China Netcom Group Corporation (Hong Kong) Limited , namely China Netcom (Shaoxing) Corporation Limited and China Netcom (Guangdong) Corporation Limited, to distribute their VoIP call time in China. On October 24, 2007, the Company acquired 100% equity interest on Smooth Global Services Limited, which holds Beijing GRT Information Services Limited ("Beijing GRT"), a company providing International Call Forwarding Service ("ICFS"). Beijing GRT entered into the international call forwarding business by obtaining a license from China Netcom (Group) Company Ltd. Shanghai Branch and a license from China Netcom (Group) Company Ltd. Shaoxing Branch. The licenses were acquired in connection with the purchase by Beijing GRT of 2000 local telephone numbers. The licenses provide that the carriers will facilitate the international call forwarding business of Beijing GRT by (1) waiving all monthly fees for the company's local numbers, (2) guaranteeing Beijing GRT its lowest per-unit fee, and (3) assuring Beijing GRT that it will retain the local numbers for at least three years. The Company will focus international call forwarding to its lines of business.

Anacomp and Equivio Announce Strategic Technology AllianceAnacomp Integrates Equivio's Near-Duplicate Technology into its CaseLogistix Litigation Support Solution
SAN DIEGO, Calif., and KENSINGTON, Md., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Anacomp(R) Inc., a leading business process solutions company, and Equivio, a provider of software used in the litigation support realm, today announced a joint technology alliance in which Anacomp has integrated Equivio's near-duplicate technology into its CaseLogistix(R) litigation support solution, allowing users to ensure the consistent treatment of similar documents and significantly reduce document review times and costs.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20030321/ANALOGO)
CaseLogistix is the most powerful and versatile litigation review and integration platform available today, providing a complete solution for electronic document organization, annotation, discovery management and production. With the Equivio integration, CaseLogistix users are able to work with groups of similar documents -- even if the documents exist in varying file formats -- and, using the Equivio compare feature, immediately access each document's unique, value-added content. As a result, users can virtually eliminate redundancy from the document review process, reducing costs and helping litigators zoom in on the information they need to build a case.
"The litigation process is challenged by ballooning document volumes and review costs," said John Turner, Anacomp's Chief Technology Officer. "The integration with Equivio's best-of-breed near-duplicate and email thread technology allows our CaseLogistix customers to focus exclusively on documents that contain unique information and, moreover, on the unique information within each document."
In addition, Anacomp supports Equivio's content-centric email thread capability. Equivio's content-centric approach to building email threads allows users to review only emails that contain unique content. Applied to data in the Enron case, Equivio's email thread technology was able to reduce the overall review effort by 60%. The content-centric approach is robust, eliminating any dependence on the idiosyncrasies of email metadata, while also facilitating thread analysis on OCR collections.
"Anacomp has a powerful presence in both the eDiscovery and enterprise document capture and management markets," Turner continued. "There are remarkable symmetries in these markets as enterprises align themselves with a changing litigation and compliance environment. By integrating Equivio's email thread technology into CaseLogistix in the near future as well as potentially into our docHarbor(R) platform, we are helping our customers find and process the right content much more quickly."
"Anacomp has clearly identified the need for technologies that can help its customers meet regulatory and litigation challenges in the face of skyrocketing document volumes," said Amir Milo, Chief Executive Officer of Equivio. "In this pervasive context, we believe that the integration of Equivio's technology will represent a compelling value proposition for Anacomp's law firm and corporate customers."
CaseLogistix allows legal teams to quickly review and produce any amount of digital evidence using an interface similar to that of Microsoft(R) Outlook(R). Combined with Anacomp's docHarbor document management platform, business process management services, and secure high-speed scanning and conversion services, CaseLogistix provides law firms and corporate legal departments with one-stop access to one of the broadest litigation management solutions in the legal industry.

iCAD Announces Partnership for Initiating Clinical Testing of Its Virtual Colonoscopy CAD Product
NASHUA, N.H., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- iCAD, Inc. , an industry-leading provider of Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) solutions for the early identification of cancer, today announced an agreement with ACR Image Metrix to conduct a multi-reader clinical study of iCAD's CT Colon product, for use with Virtual Colonoscopy. With this partnership, iCAD will work with ACR Image Metrix to develop and execute a clinical study to support U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of CT Colon CAD. ACR Image Metrix was launched by the American College of Radiology (ACR) to leverage over thirty years of experience in conducting clinical research in part through the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN). The ACR and the ACRIN have a proven history in developing trials that standardize the use of imaging technologies, image transmission and archive, reduce the size and cost of trials and produce more reliable results.
"This partnership represents a major step forward in the development of our Colon CAD product," said Ken Ferry, President and Chief Executive Officer of iCAD. "We feel that working with ACR Image Metrix, a group with significant expertise in radiology clinical trial management, will put us in an optimal position to submit solid clinical data to FDA and meet our goals for this important product line."
Although 140,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with colon cancer this year, the good news is it is one of the most treatable cancers when detected early. More than 82 million Americans are over 50 and are eligible for colorectal cancer screening, however the test is significantly underutilized, due at least in part to the invasive nature of current screening procedures. Results from recent trials showing the effectiveness of Virtual Colonoscopy as a screening procedure coupled with recent legislation introduced to establish Medicare reimbursement for the procedure are likely to expand the options available for colorectal cancer screening and increase utilization of Virtual Colonoscopy.
"It is clear from the low compliance levels that we need more options in colon cancer screening," said Bruce J. Hillman, M.D., F.A.C.R., ACR Image Metrix Director of Scientific Affairs. "We feel that CT Colonography has the potential to drastically improve colon cancer screening and we look forward to exploring how CAD can impact and enhance this new option for detecting polyps." American Airlines and Aircell Begin Broadband Connectivity InstallationAmerican's Kansas City Maintenance Base Completes First of 15 Aircraft Installations for Real-Time, Internet Broadband Connectivity
FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Airlines, leading the way in customer experience initiatives, has completed the first aircraft installation of the Aircell(R) Internet broadband connectivity solution at American's Kansas City maintenance base. American, which will be the first U.S. airline to offer customers Aircell's Internet broadband solution, plans to install and test the technology in 2008 on all 15 of its Boeing 767-200 aircraft that primarily fly transcontinental routes.

"There's a tremendous amount of intrigue and appeal for travelers to be able to utilize the Internet when traveling 30,000 feet above the United States at 500 miles per hour," said Dan Garton, American's Executive Vice President - Marketing. "Connectivity is important to our business customers and those who want to use their PDAs and laptops for real-time, full-service, inflight, broadband Internet, e-mail and VPN. With this test of Aircell's technology, American Airlines is demonstrating our commitment to enhancing the travel experience for our customers and meeting their evolving needs when it comes to connectivity and communications."
Prior to customer use, the first aircraft featuring Aircell's broadband Internet service will begin flying for rigorous systems and beta testing pending certifications from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Aircell's exclusive air-to-ground broadband system will provide customers with an Internet connection, VPN (virtual private network) access, and e-mail capabilities through all Wi-Fi-enabled laptops, PDAs and portable gaming devices. Customers will experience speeds similar to wireless, mobile, broadband services on the ground. The Aircell system is designed to provide full data service - cell phone and Voice Over IP (Internet Protocol) services will not be available.
"American Airlines is an industry leader and innovator in customer services," said Jack Blumenstein, CEO & President, Aircell, LLC. "Aircell is delighted to partner with American to provide flyers with a full, inflight, Internet connectivity experience."
Aircell's broadband service will also provide:
-- Complimentary access to AA.com including services such as gates and
times, fares and AAdvantage information,
-- Access to the Wall Street Journal Digest Edition,
-- Compatibility with VPNs that provide access to corporate intranets and
email accounts,
-- And seamless coverage over the continental U.S. above 10,000 feet.
Aircell will offer the connectivity solution to American Airlines customers in all classes of service on the B767-200 aircraft for a fee. Pending successful connectivity trials on B767 aircraft, American could extend Aircell's inflight broadband service to the remainder of its domestic fleet.
Aircell's air-to-ground inflight Internet system for commercial aircraft uses three lightweight antennae installed on the outside of the aircraft. One antenna, the PCS/GPS antenna, is mounted on the top of the aircraft, and the other two antennae are mounted to the bottom of the aircraft. Customers access the broadband signal using their own Wi-Fi enabled devices, which communicate directly with wireless access points that are distributed evenly throughout the aircraft cabin ceiling. The signal will be transmitted through the 3mhz signal from air to ground using 92 cellular towers throughout the continental United States.
The installation work of Aircell's equipment will be performed by American's mechanics, represented by the Transport Workers Union. American, a founding member of the onewold(R) Alliance, conducts nearly 90 percent of its own maintenance work in-house and provides maintenance for other aviation and aerospace companies as well.

Laserline Selects Bookham Very High Brightness Bar for Industrial Direct Diode Systems
ZURICH, Switzerland, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Bookham, Inc. , a leading manufacturer of optical components for industrial applications, today announced that Laserline has selected its Very High Brightness (VHB) bar to support their high brightness direct diode laser systems.
Volker Krause, Managing Director and Cofounder of Laserline, a leading manufacturer of direct diode laser systems for industrial material processing, said, "Based on our experience of working with Bookham, with 120W bars, we chose to work with the company again on this demanding product because of their fast innovation cycles and responsiveness.
"The VHB bar, with its unique form factor, is the perfect match for our high brightness direct diode systems as it features the Bookham hard-solder technology to support the typical intermittent operation mode we find in industrial and automotive applications."
The announcement of volume shipments of the VHB bar comes just six months after its launch at LASER 2007. The VHB bar, being shown for the first time in North America at Photonics West later this month (#1207), has a power output of 80W -- up to four times the brightness of a typical 10mm bar -- and measures only 3.2mm in width. The product supports direct industrial laser systems and enables fiber coupling without beam transformation optics by delivering high output power at a narrow emitting area.
"We are very proud to have brought this new product to volume production in such a short period of time," added Christian Naumer, senior product line manager at Bookham. "The key to the speed of this deployment is the way that we have worked in close cooperation with the customer, and designed a product that exactly meets the needs of this cutting edge systems manufacturer."
