MAAWG Joins The London Action Plan to Expand Cross-Border, Public-Private Anti-Spam Cooperation

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The London Action Plan (LAP), an important coalition of public and private entities from 27 countries cooperating on international spam law enforcement, has invited the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG) to join the alliance. MAAWG is a global association of network operators, email providers and vendors, and will work to support LAP efforts to strengthen international cooperation in fighting spam and other online abuse.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070124/CLW180LOGO )

"MAAWG is a key international venue for sharing and improving on the most effective techniques to combat online abuse, spam and fraud. MAAWG's participation in the London Action Plan further advances the global cooperation between public agencies and private industry that is essential to protect consumers and commerce," said Hugh Stevenson, Deputy Director for International Consumer Protection in the Office of International Affairs at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, one of the agencies serving as LAP's Secretariat.

LAP members cooperate on cross-border spam-related matters, as permitted within the laws of their respective countries. The effort grew out of a 2004 meeting to develop a cooperative program furthering the work of various international organizations addressing these issues, including the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the OECD Spam Task Force, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the European Union (EU), the International Consumer Protection Enforcement Network (ICPEN), and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

The newly appointed MAAWG Public Policy Chair, Susan Israel of Comcast, said, "Online abuse now flows seamlessly and consistently across borders everywhere. An important aspect of MAAWG is building the cooperative relationships between our members, who are private-sector industry leaders, and public agencies worldwide to better address these problems. Working with LAP is an important milestone in this effort."

LAP and the European Union's Contact Network of Spam Authorities co- located their most recent joint meeting in October 2007 in Washington, D.C. with the MAAWG 11th General Meeting. MAAWG will hold its next members-only meeting of about 300 industry professionals in San Francisco on Feb. 18-20. The meeting will feature both open discussion and expert presentations on abuse abatement, public policy issues, sender authentication, reputation management, and understanding the end-user experience. Details are available at http://www.maawg.org/.

Ditech Networks Selected for 'Innovation Showcase' at Cable Industry ConferenceDitech Will Conduct Live Voice Quality Demo At CableLabs Winter Conference 2008

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ditech Networks , a leading provider of voice quality solutions to the world's communications industry, today announced that it has been chosen to demonstrate its voice quality solution during "Innovation Showcase," an new event created by CableLabs as part of its 2008 winter conference. The Innovation Showcase gives a select number of vendors in the cable industry the opportunity to present products and technologies to conference attendees.

Ditech is conducting a live demonstration of its Voice Quality Assurance (VQA) product, and how it reduces or eliminates voice quality impairments from a caller's environment. Ditech's industry-leading VQA solution unobtrusively and proactively mitigates impairments in cable networks on both ends of the call, including echo and ambient noise. The product also intelligently restores lost packets that can cause clipped or choppy speech. By mitigating voice quality impairments in the network, the caller's environment, and the caller's phone or headset, Ditech's VQA delivers a consistent, high-quality call experience for VoIP service.

Voice quality remains a top priority among cable subscribers who use VoIP service, especially among small- and medium-sized businesses. Echo caused by phones or headsets, along with clipped speech from lost packets, remain obstacles to consistent VoIP voice quality. Because many of these impairments originate in the caller's environment or with the devices that are used by subscribers, cable operators are unable to solve these problems through network QoS (Quality Of Service) initiatives or additional bandwidth.

"Adding bandwidth may help with several VoIP issues, but it doesn't solve the problem of devices that cause echo, or background noise from a busy office," said Todd Simpson, President and CEO of Ditech Networks. "Even though these impairments occur outside of the network, subscribers still rely on their cable operator to deliver consistent voice quality, especially as they experience VoIP for the first time."

Ditech will demonstrate VQA during the morning on Monday, Feb. 11, at CableLabs Winter Conference 2008, which is being held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colo.

    About Ditech Networks

Ditech Networks is shaping the future of voice quality through continuous innovation and leadership for the world's communications companies. Ditech's voice quality solutions are deployed in wireless and wireline networks to optimize the call experience. By delivering consistent, dependable voice quality, Ditech's products help global communications companies meet the multiple challenges of service differentiation, network expansion and call capacity. Ditech's customers include Verizon, Sprint/Nextel, Orascom Telecom, AT&T, China Unicom, Global Crossing and West Corporation. Ditech Networks is headquartered in Mountain View, California. Forward Looking Statement

This press release contains forward-looking statements regarding Ditech Networks' expectations of the benefits the global communications industry will receive using Ditech's VQA solution. Actual results could differ materially as a result of unanticipated factors and events, including the risk that Ditech Networks' VQA solution, or the company's hardware platforms, may exhibit unforeseen technical problems that will preclude those benefits from being realized, as well as those detailed in the "Future Growth and Operating Results Subject to Risk" in Part I, Item 2 of Ditech Networks' Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the quarter ended Oct. 31, 2007 (filed Dec. 7, 2007 with the Securities and Exchange Commission).

Tektronix Provides First Fully Automated Compliance Test Suite for Serial ATA Gen-2 Physical LayerTekExpress(TM) Framework and TekExpress SATA Built on National Instruments TestStand Provides One Button Operation for Simple, Repeatable, and Efficient Compliance Testing; Reduces Compliance Test Time By Approximately 70%

BEAVERTON, Ore., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Tektronix, Inc., a leading, worldwide provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation, announced the new TekExpress(TM) compliance test automation framework and new TekExpress SATA automated compliance test software. Running on the TekExpress framework, TekExpress SATA leverages the approved suite of Tektronix serial data performance instruments to automate 100% of the required SATA Gen-1 and SATA Gen-2 compliance tests for receivers, transmitters, and interconnects. The TekExpress compliance automation framework has been developed for automated one-button testing of high speed serial data standards. The TekExpress framework is built on top of TestStand from National Instruments that serves as the sequence control engine.

Controlled from a Windows XP PC, TekExpress SATA efficiently executes the 153 SATA Gen-2 tests required by the Methods of Implementation (MOI) certified by the SATA-IO working group. TekExpress SATA software orchestrates the instrument setup and control sequences to provide complete certification test results for all four SATA-IO approved MOIs in under 3 hours of total elapsed test time. This represents a reduction in compliance test time of approximately 70%, saving designers valuable time on SATA design verification cycles. Detailed information about TekExpress SATA can be found at: http://www.tektronix.com/SATA.

Second generation serial data bus architectures including SATA Gen-2 provide an order of magnitude greater data throughput than possible only a few years ago. The accelerating performance of data rates is making design efforts even more challenging and adds design complexity that can hinder time to market and increase development cost. Consequently, engineers need powerful test equipment and software capable of greater performance, more extensive analysis, and improved efficiency. The new TekExpress SATA automated compliance test package from Tektronix provides unattended compliance testing for SATA Gen-1 and SATA Gen-2 that helps customers to streamline test operations and assists them with bringing new products to market quickly.

"There are over a hundred tests that need to be performed by test engineers to achieve SATA Gen-2 compliance," said Lynne Camp, Vice President, Performance Plus Instruments, Tektronix. "The combination of growing test complexity, multiple instruments, and the need for measurement efficiency and speed are significant challenges for our customers. Customers have asked Tektronix for a simple, complete, and efficient SATA II automated compliance test suite. TekExpress SATA addresses these customer requirements."

The compliance test modules for TekExpress SATA are divided into those for "Hosts/Devices" and for "Cables." There are six modules required for the former and one for the latter. For Hosts/Devices, the automated test modules include: Physical Layer (PHY); Transmitter Signaling Group (TSG); Out of Band (OOB); Receiver Signaling Group (RSG); Receiver Margin Test (RMT) and; Transmit and Receive (Tx/Rx). For Cables, there is an additional Cable Signal Integrity (SI) module. Execution of the SATA MOIs is performed from any Windows XP computer.

Using traditional test methods customers typically take eight or more hours to cycle through the required SATA Gen-2 compliance tests. This is especially time consuming if an error is encountered and the tests need to be performed again. By using TekExpress SATA, a complete SATA Gen-2 compliance test can be performed largely without user intervention, providing complete test results in a few hours.

"We have been able to utilize the pre-release version of the new TekExpress automated compliance software for SATA Gen-2 from Tektronix and have seen dramatic reductions in set-up complexity and execution time required to complete the needed tests," said Johan Craeybeckx, Chief Technology Officer, Testronic Laboratories. "Companies that once found SATA II compliance testing a difficult and time consuming task will be pleasantly surprised, whether performing these tests themselves or at a certified test house. Tektronix provides us with the best expertise and test bench for high speed serial technologies and standards. We will standardize our SATA Gen-2 compliance test tools and procedures using Tektronix instrumentation and the new TekExpress SATA software."

TekExpress SATA extends the level of support Tektronix provides for SATA Gen-2 development and compliance efforts through its family of high-performance instrumentation. Tektronix offers a unique breadth of best in class instruments, performance levels and product automation which when applied to a any specific standard brings the customers productivity to the new level of productivity expected in today's rapidly evolving serial standards market.

Required equipment for the TekExpress SATA compliance test are a high bandwidth real time oscilloscope (DSA70000 Series Digital Serial Analyzer), a high speed serial signal generator (AWG7102 Arbitrary Waveform Generator), and a high bandwidth sampling oscilloscope (DSA8200 Series Digital Serial Analyzer). Tektronix DSA oscilloscopes and AWG signal generators provide the performance necessary for testing all generations of SATA devices, including the planned SATA Gen-3 spec, set to run at 6 Gb/sec. These next-generation instruments and application software solutions are part of an entirely new and comprehensive test bench for high-speed serial data.

NI TestStand is a ready-to-run test management environment designed to simplify the automation of test and validation systems. TestStand, when combined with TekExpress can be used to develop, manage and execute additional test sequences beyond SATA Gen-2 Compliance Testing.

    Pricing and Availability

Pricing for TekExpress Framework is $4,900 and MOI modules range between $5,900-$19,900. All prices shown are U.S. MSRP. Options are available today for RSG. Pre-release versions are available for TSG/PHY/OOB. Remaining SATA modules are expected to be available by the end of the second calendar quarter in 2008.

    About TekExpress(TM) Compliance Test Software

TekExpress (TEKEXP) Automated Compliance Software is a Windows based application that runs on any Windows XP computer operating system including Tektronix Windows based instruments. TekExpress ordered with SATA specific options provides a completely automated, simple, and efficient way to test SATA I/II Hosts, Devices, and Cables per the requirements of the SATA-IW (Serial ATA Interoperability Working Group) as defined in accepted Methods of Implementation (MOI). U.S. Airlines Face Global Competition Challenge to Delivering In-Flight Communications, Entertainment to Passengers, Say Industry LeadersEMS CEO Domorski to Industry: 'Demand for Communications Mobility will Make In-flight Voice and Data Inevitable'

WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- U.S. airlines may be at a competitive disadvantage as European carriers move forward on plans for in-flight Internet connectivity and communication services on-board passenger aircraft, concluded a panel of industry experts today at a National Press Club briefing sponsored by satellite communications leader EMS Technologies, Inc. and Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine.

The Open Skies Agreement, signed by U.S. and European airlines last year, goes into effect this March, allowing U.S. and European carriers to compete in each other's market for transatlantic routes. But some industry observers foresee a potential competitive imbalance favoring non-U.S. carriers that could result if U.S. regulatory restrictions are not lifted. The panel, including representatives from AeroMobile, EMS SATCOM, JetBlue Airways, Inmarsat, OnAir and the World Airline Entertainment Association (WAEA) discussed the impact of this agreement and other technology and business drivers on the choice-of-carriers decisions of more than 600 million passengers expected to travel internationally this year.

Said Paul Domorski, president and CEO of EMS Technologies, "In order for U.S. carriers to remain competitive, any in-flight connectivity service must support a global reach. It is not really a question of 'if' airlines are going to make mobile communications available to the flying public but 'when' and 'how.' In-flight connectivity is inevitable. The world is going mobile."

While the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) currently restrict airlines from using cell phones, innovative airlines like JetBlue are moving forward on trials with introductions of in-flight WiFi this year. In December, JetBlue, in partnership with LiveTV, Research in Motion and Yahoo!, became the first U.S. domestic carrier to provide free in-flight e-mail and text messaging on "Betablue," an Airbus A320 aircraft equipped with an onboard wireless network.

According to a recent USAToday/CNN/Gallup poll, nearly 70 percent of frequent or occasional air passengers want the U.S. airline cell phone ban lifted. In addition, nearly 65 percent of BlackBerry and Treo users would use their devices in-flight if they could, according to a survey of European passengers sponsored by OnAir.

Gary Hebb, VP and general manager of EMS SATCOM, noted, "Voice and Blackberries are the killer apps. Real Blackberries, not the one's that works on WiFi. But other lightweight applications are going to become very important. Ultimately, the system and the business model need to be scalable, so that airlines are making money from day one."

Said Michael Butler, President and COO of Inmarsat, "Our aeronautical business has been the fastest-growing segment of Inmarsat's revenues for the last three years, driven by early adoption of our Swift services among government and corporate users." Butler pointed to the advanced capability of the company's Inmarsat-4 satellites to meet the predicted growth in demand worldwide. "With the commercial launch of SwiftBroadband at the end of 2007, our manufacturing partners now well advanced with the avionics, and the launch of the third Inmarsat-4 later this year, we will be able to offer a new level of connectivity for airlines, wherever they fly."

Both Butler and David Coiley, director, marketing and strategic relationships for AeroMobile Ltd., said voice is a big application that their customers want to see.

"Our research and experience around the world point to hugely significant pent-up demand for use of personal cell phones, not just for text and data but for voice calls, too. Passengers want the choice to be able to use their cell phones in the air in the same way that they use them on the ground," Coiley said, predicting that thousands aircraft will be installed with cell-phone connectivity capability in future years.

He said AeroMobile's service has been "fully flight-proven" with real passengers for nine months. "We have solved the challenges of safely delivering cellular services on aircraft in an appropriate and responsible way, to the benefit of all passengers."

Benoit Debains, president of OnAir, reported on Air France's GSM in-flight connectivity trial. In December it became the first airline to use Mobile OnAir on international flights.

Said Debains, "Following the Air France trial, three other airlines in Europe are expected to launch trials this quarter to be followed in China, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and India. Airlines from every continent show that passengers are eager to use the handsets for in-flight communication and this will become a worldwide requirement."

Said Brett Muney, general manager of product development at JetBlue Airways, "The majority of frequent business and leisure travelers want some type of connectivity, but it becomes a question of the business model and whether airlines offer this for free or whether they charge a fee. The real question is 'what type of services are customers going to want?' Our customers have told us they will support silent options like email and instant messaging, but the ability to talk on cell phones will interfere with their core JetBlue Experience."

Said Domorski, "Passengers want connectivity to be simple, cost-effective, seamless and available -- from the airport lounge to the airliner cabin. We should demand that our regulatory agencies recognize the power of the market and support innovation in both technology and business models aimed at making the passenger experience a richer one."

According to the World Airline Entertainment Association, the market for in-flight communication and entertainment is forecast to increase from $50 million in 2005 to $950 million by 2016.

    Xilinx at Mobile World Congress 2008What: Mobile World Congress 2008Where: Fira de Barcelona, Barcelona, Hall 1, Stand E47When: February 11-14, 2008Exhibits: Monday - Wednesday, 9a.m. - 7p.m. Thursday, 9a.m. - 5p.m.

DUBLIN, Ireland, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Xilinx, Inc. today announced its participation at Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona, Spain from February 11 through 14. The company will unveil its latest portfolio of flexible hardware solutions for mobile phone base stations, supporting all major air interfaces, including 3GPP-LTE. In addition, it will highlight a new digital pre-distortion (DPD) capability that enables infrastructure vendors to achieve significant power reductions from the latest generation of power amplifiers.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020822/XLNXLOGO) Xilinx Booth Demonstrations (Hall 1 - Stand E47)

In the following demonstrations, Xilinx will show how the integration of multiple functions on a single flexible silicon device results in direct and indirect cost reductions for network infrastructure vendors and operators.

-- Multi-mode Radio Card -- This demonstration supports UMTS, 3GPP-LTE, TD-SCDMA and WiMAX, using the DSP resources of the FPGA to cost effectively implement the signal processing requirements of digital up conversion (DUC), digital down conversion (DDC), crest factor reduction (CFR) and digital pre-distortion (DPD). To minimise FPGA utilisation and therefore reduce capital expenditure (CAPEX), the DPD processing is partitioned between the DSP resources of the FPGA and a MicroBlaze(TM) soft processor. This is then used to linearise the latest LDMOS RF power device from Freescale Semiconductor, achieving power outputs in excess of 40 watts whilst maintaining spectral mask. Xilinx has tested the DPD design with a number of power amplifiers and has observed output efficiencies of up to 35 percent. -- Baseband -- This baseband demonstration comprises a complete, high-throughput, 3GPP-LTE-compliant physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH), utilizing IP components, including an LTE turbo decoder, FFT/iFFT blocks with cyclic prefix insertion, rate matching and QAM mapper/demapper functions. Implemented using the latest VirtexTM-5 FPGA technology, the transmit and receive functions are connected by Ethernet to a host PC that sources and displays different video streams. A dual video stream arrangement is then used to demonstrate the capabilities of the >100Mbps net throughput performance of the 3GPP-LTE PHY, over a 10MHz frequency band. About Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGAs

The Virtex-5 family represents the fifth generation in the award-winning Virtex series. Built upon the industry's most advanced 65nm triple-oxide technology, breakthrough new ExpressFabric(TM) technology and proven ASMBL(TM) architecture, the Virtex-5 family includes four domain-optimized platforms for high-speed logic, digital signal processing (DSP), embedded processing and serial connectivity applications. Texas Instruments new process techniques solve low-power challenges in delivering company's first 45 nanometer wireless deviceAdvancements to SmartReflex(TM) portfolio of technologies increase performance and reduce power, optimizing support for power-hungry applications in wireless devices

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- At the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) today disclosed process and design advancements enabling the first 45 nanometer (nm) 3.5G baseband and multimedia processor addressing critical power challenges in the wireless market. TI's expertise in chip technologies are increasing performance while lowering power requirements in this custom solution which the company recently began sampling in fourth quarter 2007 to a wireless customer. TI's 45nm process incorporates various technology advancements and design techniques along with new SmartReflex(TM) 2 power and performance management technologies. With these advancements, wireless customers will be able to deliver smaller, sleeker devices with advanced multimedia functionality, realizing a 55 percent performance increase and 63 percent power reduction versus the 65nm process.

    Leveraging the 45nm process

In a paper presented today, Dr. Uming Ko, TI Senior Fellow and director of TI's Wireless Chip Technology Center, described the new device that is based upon TI's low-power 45nm process. The process is designed to address the specific needs of the portable device market, initially mobile handsets, which uses immersion lithography tools and ultra-low K dielectrics to double the number of chips produced on each silicon wafer, while giving its customers a performance boost over the current 65nm low power process. The performance enhancement is achieved through a number of proprietary techniques including strained silicon to further reduce leakage in the 45nm process.

The platform includes a high-throughput communication and high-performance multimedia applications engine based on an ARM11, high performance TMS320C55x(TM) digital signal processor (DSP), and an image signal processor, bringing a consumer-electronics quality experience to mobile handsets that work across multiple wireless standards. A number of analog components are also integrated, including an RF Codec.

"Today's announcement demonstrates TI's commitment to delivering high-performance, low power wireless solutions that help handset manufacturers better address advancements in the wireless market," said Jeff Bellay, vice president, Wireless Advanced Technology. "The ability to dramatically impact the power and performance of silicon allows our customers to deliver next-generation handsets that feature truly impressive multimedia capabilities using minimal power."

The dramatic performance boost achieved at the 45nm process node is ideal to meet the increasing demands of the mobile multimedia environment. Customers can design and deliver handsets that will enhance the user experience enabling high-definition (HD) video playback and record, running simultaneous applications such as a game with 3-D graphics in parallel to a video conference between the players. The ability to reduce power allows for more advanced features and applications to be included in handset designs, as well as increased video playback, talk and stand-by time.

Dramatic power reductions with SmartReflex 2 technologies

Overall power management is particularly critical to the wireless market, and the challenges faced as communications and computing continue to converge on mobile devices, directly impacting battery life. TI remains at the forefront of the market in delivering technology innovation to allow its customers to deliver high performing, more power-efficient products, including process technology and design techniques that are integrated across the company's broad portfolio of analog and DSP products.

One example of this is TI's SmartReflex technologies that were introduced in TI's 90-nm process that include a range of hardware and software techniques to address power management at the system level across an entire design. In TI's enhanced SmartReflex 2 technologies, new capabilities are introduced including TI's patented Adaptive Body Bias (ABB), Retention 'Til Access (RTA) memory and SmartReflex PriMer tools. The SmartReflex 2 technologies allow the 45-nm process to deliver intelligent chip performance and power reduction.

ABB is an intelligent adaptive technology that allows for automatic, dynamic voltage adjustment to best derive the power and performance from the processor to meet the needs of the mobile device without additional wafer complexities and cost. This technology addresses the issue of supporting additional voltage which requires more processing steps and is typically linked to higher manufacturing cost. ABB consists of forward body-bias (FBB) for performance boost and reverse body-bias (RBB) for power reduction. The ABB approach enables an optimal balance of power and performance with circuit techniques alone, eliminating the need for additional logic transistors with different threshold voltages.

Special leakage management functions such as RTA provide the ability to switch to low-power modes in response to active processes. With TI's RTA technology, the memory is segmented, lowering voltage while continuing to retain memory data. This gives the overall system more power to efficiently run other power-hungry applications and reduce power drain.

In addition to hardware advancements, TI is introducing its SmartReflex PriMer power management tools. SmartReflex PriMer tools are a series of automated tools for a system-on-chip (SOC) design that reduce time to market by helping to automate register transfer language (RTL) generation, ensuring that it is correct by construction. This gives TI customers a simpler way to implement SmartReflex power and performance management techniques into future product generations.

    Flexible manufacturing

TI is focused on delivering flexible external and internal manufacturing for high volume production of customer designs on the advanced processes they require. Fabricated using a low-power digital and analog design platform and 45-nm process technology, TI met its commitment to the market by shipping the first samples of a 45-nm wireless SoC solution in the fourth quarter 2007 and expects fully qualified production in 2008 on 300 millimeter (mm) wafers.

Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe Publish New PreK-8 Mathematics Program

NEW YORK, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe, leading publishers of print and digital educational materials for Grades PreK-6 and 6-12 respectively, today announced the publication of Math Connects, a vertically aligned PreK-8 basal math program.

Math Connects sets a new standard in educational instruction. In addition to being developed to meet state standards, the comprehensive program was built with two goals in mind: success at each grade level and future student success in Algebra I and beyond.

The importance of this future success is supported by a College Board study, which found that nearly 80 percent of students who successfully complete Algebra I and Geometry by Grade 10 attend and succeed in college. These findings were consistent across racial and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The authors, using the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Focal Points for each grade level as their guide, developed this new series by "backmapping" from desired math mastery goals in Algebra I, Geometry and beyond to ensure that all students have the knowledge and skills they need to achieve these goals.

Integrated technology, including CD-ROM and online content, digital assessment tools, and customizable PowerPoint presentations help guide and facilitate instruction.

The balanced approach in Math Connects helps reach all learners and accommodates a variety of teaching styles. Throughout the text, students build conceptual understanding through hands-on and interactive activities. Visual models help students move from the concrete to the pictorial to the abstract as they develop computational and procedural skills. Students have frequent opportunities to apply mathematics to problem solving in real-world applications and a focused emphasis on vocabulary builds mathematical literacy.

In addition to practice opportunities in every lesson, Math Connects helps students become independent problem solvers through strategy lessons, investigation lessons, cross-curricular problem solving lessons and Real-World Problem Solving Readers that extend these skills and strategies through applications in science and social studies.

Math Connects is the only true vertically aligned mathematics curriculum. Vertical alignment provides learners with an articulated, focused, and coherent sequence of content. It ensures that content standards and units of study are introduced, reinforced, and assessed, and that instruction is targeted to student needs and state standards.

"Strong vertical alignment is essential and accommodates a wide variety of developmental levels," said Steven McClung, president of McGraw-Hill School Solutions Group, which includes Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe. "It also allows teachers increased precision in their teaching because they are not teaching content that is covered elsewhere or that students have previously mastered."

An ongoing assessment system, which includes diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment; data-driven instruction; intervention options; and performance tracking, is available throughout the program.

Strategic intervention options are offered for all grades, with intensive intervention references to Math Triumphs, a Tier 3 companion intervention program.

For additional support, the program is horizontally aligned with National Science Foundation (NSF) programs Impact Mathematics, for Grades K-5 and Mathscape: Seeing and Thinking Mathematically, for Grades 6-8.

Math Connects includes many opportunities for professional development. Additional learning opportunities in various formats, including video, online, and on-site instruction, are fully aligned and articulated across grades.

VIASPACE Receives Initial Order for a Lithium Battery Test Station From Battelle

PASADENA, Calif., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- VIASPACE Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: VSPC) , a company dedicated to commercializing proven technologies from NASA and the US Department of Defense, announced today that it has received the initial order for its new Electrochemical Thermodynamics Measurement System (ETMS) from Battelle Pacific Northwest Division.

VIASPACE CEO Dr. Carl Kukkonen stated, "Our newest Caltech license grants VIASPACE the exclusive rights to several new patents covering an instrument that can accurately measure the electrochemical thermodynamics in batteries. The initial ETMS instrument that we have developed and will introduce in the near future will be focused on measuring the thermodynamics as they develop in the charge and discharge cycles of Lithium batteries.

"Lithium based batteries are the main battery technology utilized in most portable electronic devices today. Currently battery manufacturers are struggling to find new formulas of Lithium based chemistry that will satisfy the increasing power needs of devices including notebook computers, cellular/converged phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs), while maintaining a formula that is also stable enough to pass rigorous safety tests."

Kukkonen continued, "The initial ETMS system is designed to aide the research and development staffs of many companies and government labs struggling to get accurate readings on the performance and volatility of batteries of various chemistries. We are delighted to have Battelle as our launch customer for this new product, prior to its formal introduction at the Fuel Cell Expo in Tokyo in late February. We believe there is a strong possibility that the next ETMS model, targeted for introduction later in 2008, will also serve another purpose as a quality assurance instrument in screening lots of finished Model 18650 Lithium batteries in the production environment as well."

About VIASPACE: Originally founded in 1998 with the objective of transforming proven space and defense technologies from NASA and the Department of Defense into hardware and software solutions that solve today's complex problems, VIASPACE benefits from important patent and software licenses from Caltech, which manages NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Microsoft adCenter Labs Unveils Digital Advertising Innovations at Fourth Annual Demo FestTeam demonstrates progress of existing marketing tools to help digital advertising become more efficient and relevant.

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Microsoft Corp. today unveiled a series of next-generation digital advertising technologies at its fourth annual Demo Fest, an event that showcases some of the leading-edge technologies in development by Microsoft adCenter Labs (http://adlab.microsoft.com/). The technologies highlighted at this event included the latest advances and algorithms in content analysis and computer vision for video and images, speech recognition for contextual video ads, and advanced marketing intelligence that enable enhanced audience insight and better targeting capabilities for advertisers.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

"We believe the technical advances and intelligence we are creating at adCenter Labs can change the game of online advertising," said Tarek Najm, technical fellow at Microsoft. "Solutions to today's challenges must be capable of handling and understanding the complexity of vast amounts of data. To address that challenge, we are developing advertising algorithms that can anticipate and understand consumer behavior faster than the speed of thought, so that we can help advertisers create more efficient and relevant user experiences."

The following seven demos were shown at today's event: -- Air Wave. This technology creates a "fourth screen" experience beyond the TV, PC and mobile phone to enable advertisers to engage consumers outside of the home in public places such as an airport or a shopping mall. By using an interactive, multitouch screen display, consumers can play games or interact with advertisements to receive coupons or product information. With the help of a webcam, they can try on products such as sunglasses virtually. This technology builds on the "large display ads" technology showcased at last year's Demo Fest. -- Contextual Ads for Video. Through speech recognition, this technology enables ads to be dynamically served based on the content discussed in the video. For example, if the topic of the video was gardening, ads related to gardening or lawn improvement could be served in an adjacent text-based ad as the video played. For advertisers, this provides access to consumers while at the point of consideration. -- Intelligent Bug Ads. This technology balances the interests of advertisers and the target audience by locating nonintrusive frames in a video in which to place ads. By using a computer vision algorithm to calculate the least intrusive spot in the video, it approximates human judgment and places the ad in the video where it is least likely to interfere with the consumer's viewing experience. -- Visual Product Browsing. This tool uses computer vision algorithms to browse and categorize images as a human might, without the need for manual data tagging. Online shoppers could use this technology to visually browse categorized images of products such as lamps and narrow their search to find "more like this" options through physical and visual characteristics such as the product's height, depth and width. This brings efficiency to photo browsing and enhanced targeting capabilities for advertisers who are trying to better understand user intent and preferences. -- Content Analysis Engine. This technology uses advanced algorithms to automatically extract and categorize information from search queries and Web page contents to better understand user intent and minimize search engine marketing complexity. Search engine marketers can use this technology to discover valuable keywords relevant to their category or to bid on categories, such as digital cameras, instead of managing each individual keyword associated with a category. Categorization also helps publishers more effectively monetize their advertising inventory by opening up additional contextual content opportunities deeper into their content pages. -- Content Detection in Sub-documents. This technology identifies sensitive or unsuitable content such as pornography, weapons or negative sentiments that advertisers would not likely want to be associated with, and automatically blocks contextual ads related to that content. Microsoft is building on "whole-page content detection," shown at last year's Demo Fest, to respect users' sensitivities and advertisers' brands and images. This year the adCenter Labs team took it one step further by analyzing individual sections of a complex Web page, such as the MSN home page, and only serving contextual ads that relate to nonsensitive content. -- Ad Research Dashboard. The dashboard builds on the success of the Keyword Services Platform (KSP) introduced at Demo Fest last year. It is a flexible and central place within adCenter that provides marketers with access to analytics and advanced algorithms that are tied to actual data sets from adCenter to help them maximize the effectiveness of their search marketing campaigns. The dashboard builds on Microsoft's commitment to provide advertisers and agencies with as much data transparency as possible to help them to make more informed decisions about their search marketing campaigns.

"The ultimate marketing objective is to find a sweet spot where you connect with a consumer on their terms," said Jeffrey Pruitt, executive vice president of Corporate Partnerships for iCrossing and president of the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO). "The insights and research that are coming out of Microsoft's adCenter Labs help provide agencies and advertisers with smarter, more relevant online advertising technologies and tools to make informed decisions on those connection points."

Together with Open Text, Microsoft is empowering employees within law firms to improve productivity, extend the boundaries of collaboration, and provide better document controls and processes."
