    MOUNTAIN VIEW, Californie, February 6 /PRNewswire/ --

    (Logo : http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

Railinc Improves Network Capabilities with Business Continuity Solutions from Time Warner Telecom- Bandwidth triples, resulting in improved employee productivity- Redundant, flexible solutions reduce disaster recovery time from hours to minutes

RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Time Warner Telecom Inc., , a leading provider of managed voice and data networking solutions for businesses, today announced the signing of a multi-year contract to provide metro Ethernet, multi-site IP VPN, Ethernet Internet and advanced voice services to Railinc of Cary, N.C. Railinc is the largest North American supplier of real-time transportation data to the railroad industry.

"Time Warner Telecom's network solutions will replace our existing point-to-point network with a robust, fully-meshed network architecture that will keep Railinc in the forefront of the industry," said Paul Gaglione, network services manager for Railinc in Cary. "With these capabilities, in addition to adding dual SONET-based fiber entries into our headquarters facility, Railinc now has the ability to reroute network services in minutes as the need arises. Overall, we are getting three times the bandwidth and dual entry at our headquarters building for less than we were paying for our outdated legacy solutions."

Time Warner Telecom beat out four other providers Railinc had considered during its review. "I knew from past experience that Time Warner Telecom's services were highly reliable," added Gaglione. "They were the only vendor who could provide the redundancy I wanted through dual-entry fiber to our Cary headquarters and ultimately they provided the best solutions and value for technology we were seeking."

Time Warner Telecom will install dual-entry connectivity to the firm's Cary headquarters building, providing Railinc with diverse network connectivity and thus ensuring system-wide integrity from natural and man-made disasters. Additionally, Railinc has contracted for a 25 Mbps metro Ethernet connection between its Cary location and its disaster recovery site located in Raleigh.

Railinc also contracted for two 10 Mbps IP VPN links from Time Warner Telecom as part of the agreement. The company will deploy one IP VPN connection at its headquarters location to support Internet access, including extranet access to industry reference materials and data hosted in Microsoft SharePoint-based solutions for key customers and employees. The second IP VPN connection will link its Cary-based software engineers to hosted applications at its Pittsburgh, Penn. data center. Railinc will also soon be working with Time Warner Telecom on provisioning additional links for enhanced disaster recovery capabilities between their production operations data center in Pittsburg and a new data center located in South Carolina.

"We continually see that our solutions, such as metro Ethernet and IP VPN, are a perfect fit for businesses that demand reliable and flexible connections for their networks," said Marilyn Finfrock, vice president and general manager for Time Warner Telecom in Raleigh. "The capabilities inherent in our network, along with versatile solutions, give companies the peace of mind that their business continuity and disaster recovery objectives are being met."

American Greetings Announces Security Measures to Further Protect Consumers

CLEVELAND, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Greetings announces the implementation of additional layers of security to help protect e-card recipients this Valentine's Day. AG Interactive, a division of American Greetings Corporation , claims the new security procedures will provide additional authentication of their legitimate e-mails.

Launching just before Valentine's Day, one of the busiest times of year for the social expression industry, these new tools enable mail receivers, such as Internet Service Providers (ISPs), to check whether an e-card notification has been legitimately sent from one of American Greetings brands.

"People across the country send e-greetings to friends and family at Valentine's Day and other holidays," said Rajiv Jain, SVP and CTO of AG Interactive. "Working with leading ISPs and with the latest technology solutions, we are taking additional steps to protect those receiving our e- cards."

A DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) signature, along with other authentication practices, can dissuade illegitimate senders from sending harmful viruses using American Greetings' brand names. These additional layers of security help to combat fraudulent e-mails and keep online consumers safe.

The additional tools further AG Interactive's commitment to protect the online consumers who will receive e-cards this Valentine's Day, and on other holidays. For more information on how consumers can protect themselves from fraudulent e-mail, visit the AmericanGreetings.com Email Protection Resource Center.

Major Players of the DVB-SH Ecosystem Join Forces to Demonstrate Live Mobile TV in S-Band Throughout the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona

BARCELONA, Spain, February 6 /PRNewswire/ -- On the occasion of the 2008 Mobile World Congress, major players from the DVB-SH ecosystem (Alcatel-Lucent, DiBcom, Eutelsat Communications, Sagem Mobiles, SES Astra, TeamCast and UDcast) are joining forces to deliver the first demonstration of live Mobile TV in S-Band based on DVB-SH covering the whole FIRA premises in Barcelona.

The demonstration will use DVB-SH ready "SAGEM myMobileTV" handsets from Sagem Mobiles, empowered by DiBcom's DVB-SH receiver prototypes.

The S-band signal will be made available by Alcatel-Lucent throughout the FIRA, thanks to a terrestrial repeater network using technological elements from TeamCast (DVB-SH modulators) and UDcast (DVB-SH IP encapsulators). Abertis will provide support for the installation of repeaters, cables and antennas and to access the content.

Eutelsat Communications will provide the satellite capacity for the distribution to the DVB-SH terrestrial repeater network of various live Mobile TV channels including CNBC, La Sexta, Canal 300, Nickelodeon, 40 Latino, 24h TVE, Teledeporte, and Telecinco Sport.

The DVB-SH standard (Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite services to Handhelds) is an evolution of the DVB-H standard that offers three key benefits: a much greater choice in terms of spectrum (up to 3GHz); a better spectrum efficiency, directly translating into significant cost savings; a possible hybrid satellite/terrestrial operation, to extend mobile broadcast reach all across a territory. Its technical specifications were announced by the DVB Project just one year ago during the 2007 3GSM World Congress.

In Europe, DVB-SH will use the S-Band, a frequency band at 2.2GHz available across many European countries, and Europe's first S-Band space segment owned by a joint venture company of Eutelsat and SES Astra will be launched in the first quarter of 2009. The S-Band enables the use of the DVB-SH standard and is adjacent to the UMTS band, thus allowing reuse of existing cellular sites, towers and antennas.

In the US, the first DVB-SH operation will also be based on a hybrid system at 2.2GHz with an S-Band satellite to be launched by ICO Global Communications in March 2008.

This demonstration will be accessible from the following booths at FIRA: Alcatel-Lucent (Hall 8, booth 8A147), bmco forum (Hall 2, booth 2B82), DiBcom (Hall 2, booth 1D30), Abertis/Eutelsat (Courtyard Pavilion, booth CY14), Sagem Mobiles (Hall 8, booth 8B94) and UDcast (Hall 2, booth 2B89).

Further DVB-SH based demonstrations will be available on the Alcatel-Lucent booth, including unified DVB-H / S-Band (based on DVB-SH) Mobile TV on Sagem handsets, and interactive seamless 3G unicast / S-Band broadcast (based on DVB-SH) Mobile TV on Samsung handsets.

    OTTAWA, Canada, February 6 /PRNewswire/ --

Stone Harbor, N.J., Residents to Benefit from Verizon Wireless Network ExpansionInvesting to Stay Ahead of Growing Demand for Wireless Calling, Data Access, and Music

STONE HARBOR, N.J., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents in Stone Harbor, Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the most reliable voice and data network, has expanded its network with a new cell site. The new site increases coverage and capacity along Dune Drive between 72nd and 122nd Streets, and on 96th Street from 1st Avenue midway out to the Garden State Parkway.

The network expansion is part of an aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year (more than $1 billion every 90 days) to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless' voice and data services. The company spent more than $190 million in 2007 to enhance services and coverage throughout southeastern, central and northeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware, bringing the network investment in the region to more than $1 billion since 2000. Nationally, the company has invested more than $40 billion over the last seven years into its national wireless network as part of its commitment to offer customers the most reliable service available, including wireless data services such as picture messaging, text messaging, and the company's exclusive V CAST service. V CAST brings video clips of TV shows, music on demand and other multimedia services to wireless phones over Verizon Wireless' high-speed EV-DO network. Verizon Wireless's high-speed third generation wireless broadband network has been enhanced with EV-DO Rev. A technology. This enhancement allows customers who use the company's flagship business data service, BroadbandAccess, to interact with Web-based applications, download music over-the-air, access to e-mail, everyday corporate data, the Internet, and more at speeds that are eight to nine times faster than before. For example, BroadbandAccess customers with Rev. A compatible devices can now expect average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits per second and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps, which means customers can download a 1 megabyte e-mail attachment -- the equivalent of a small PowerPoint(R) presentation or a large PDF file -- in about eight seconds and upload the same sized file in less than 13 seconds.

Strong demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the fourth quarter of 2007 as the company added two million net new customers. For the 13th consecutive quarter, Verizon Wireless also led the wireless industry in customer loyalty. The company posted a churn (customer turnover) rate of just 1.2%, well below the rate reported by the other major wireless carriers.

Verizon Wireless tests its network and those of its competitors to ensure the Verizon Wireless network remains the nation's most reliable. Nationally, Verizon Wireless' real-life test men and women drive 98 specially equipped vehicles almost 1,000,000 miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts, to determine if voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than three million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

    About Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless operates the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, serving 65.7 million customers. Headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J., with 69,000 employees nationwide, Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone (NYSE and LSE: VOD). Major Players of the DVB-SH Ecosystem Join Forces to Demonstrate Live Mobile TV in S-Band Throughout the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona

BARCELONA, February 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- On the occasion of the 2008 Mobile World Congress, major players from the DVB-SH ecosystem (Alcatel-Lucent, DiBcom, Eutelsat Communications, Sagem Mobiles, SES Astra, TeamCast and UDcast) are joining forces to deliver the first demonstration of live Mobile TV in S-Band based on DVB-SH covering the whole FIRA premises in Barcelona.

Princeton, N.J., Residents to Benefit from Verizon Wireless Network ExpansionInvesting to Stay Ahead of Growing Demand for Wireless Calling, Data Access, and Music

PRINCETON, N.J., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents in Princeton, Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the most reliable voice and data network, has expanded its network with a new cell site. The new site increases coverage and capacity along Route 206 between Dunn Way and mile marker 56, as well as east on Herrontown Road and west on Cherry Valley Road.

Global Business Harmonization Keeps Global CPG Companies in Tune With Local Market DemandsDiamond Report Explains How Simplifying Standards Helps Consumer Packaged Goods Companies Reduce Complexity, Improve Company Performance

CHICAGO, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Having spent millions on complex enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, many consumer packaged goods companies still are out of tune with consumer demand. But other CPG giants such as Kellogg's, Nestle's, and Kraft have harmonized their operations by eliminating much of the complexity that is inherent in running a global company.

Most CPG companies have hundreds of standards for operations ranging from strategic planning to product replenishment. The key to eliminating complexity: establish a minimal set of standards that corporate management can rely on to run the business while providing the flexibility required to respond to diverse local market conditions.

"The goal is global business harmonization," contends Mark Baum, Managing Partner of the consumer packaged goods practice at Diamond Management & Technology Consultants, Inc. .

"The 'one-size-fits-all' approach of most ERP systems ignores the differences among local markets," Baum explained. "A shop owner in Southeast Asia might be selling gum by the piece, while a big box retailer in the U.S. sells by the carton. In one case, customer orders are cash transactions, in the other orders are processed electronically.

"A typical ERP system can't account for those differences," Baum added. "But there are some common standards -- about customer master data, for example -- than can be applied in both situations."

Baum, previously executive vice president of the GMA, points to Kellogg's "Continuous Cost Improvement" program as an example of harmonizing operations to increase financial performance.

Kellogg's recognized in 2002 that they needed to address the impact of rising costs and volatile business cycles by instituting a series of sustainable improvements. By harmonizing standards that would work across more than 180 countries where Kellogg's products are sold, the company's annual return on its process improvement initiatives consistently ran from 29 percent to 32 percent of its cost base. In 2005 alone, Kellogg's kept gross margins flat despite an increase of 70 basis points in input costs due to rising commodity prices.

"We've seen that simplified and harmonized business operations, coupled with improved global performance management, can actually fuel business operations improvements by providing cost savings in the range of three percent to five percent of revenue," said Baum. "The potential for top-line growth ranges from one to two percent because harmonization can keep the company's products relevant even as markets evolve."

Nestle's Global Business Excellence (GLOBE) initiative implemented a single set of procurement, distribution and sales management and systems with impressive results. The CPG giant reported savings of $2.9 billion in 2007. New purchasing processes in Nestle's Oceania region alone cut annual costs of almost $15 million.

Debbie Lentz, Vice President, Business Process Design at Kraft Foods, Inc. said, "A similar approach was used at Kraft. We established a governance structure to help determine where and why we would apply global harmonized business processes. Our North American ERP implementation leveraged our previous European ERP design to help accelerate our due diligence efforts to jointly identify, justify, and prioritize business process standards. This approach ensured up-front stakeholder alignment, confirmed a globally sustainable solution, and helped drive synergies across our operations."

    Achieving Harmony

In a new Diamond report, "The Need for Speed: Don't Let Standards Slow You Down," the consulting firm explains how CPG companies can break from the "one-size-fits-all" attitude that undermines agility. To obtain a copy of the complete report, send an email to: harmonization@diamondconsultants.com.

According to Baum, "Standards are essential but too many standards put the brakes on agility. The key is to find the fewest number of standards across the processes, organizational structure, technology, and information that are the heart of the business."

That process starts with building a business case that considers all the operations directly related to a company's strategy, as well as indirect operations that either have significant costs (financial planning, human resource policy management) or lend themselves to outsourcing (payroll, travel administration).

Questions that are typically addressed in the process include: -- How standardized are our core capabilities now? Are those standards helping us or holding us back from competing in local markets? -- Could we absorb an acquisition quickly, or is our current business architecture too complex? -- Are the heads of our business units and regions calling for greater harmonization or greater flexibility in the processes, information architectures, organizational structure, and technology they rely on to make their numbers? -- Can senior management rely on a common set of metrics across all business units and regions to measure and monitor performance? -- If we were to outsource any capabilities tomorrow, would the transition be straightforward? Could we clearly articulate to an outsourcer the service levels we expect?

Once management decides which operations appear to offer the greatest payback, it is necessary to understand the extent of commonality and diversity along all operational dimensions -- business process, technology, organization, and data/information. This eye-opening exercise helps set the right expectations with internal and external stakeholders who might feel threatened by doing away with the old ways of doing business.

Righting the company's standards requires rigorous governance. Baum recommends establishing a Center of Excellence as part of the global business harmonization initiative to actively govern the design, build, and adoption of harmonized standards across process, technology, organization, and information dimensions. A phased deployment with an upfront pilot increases the chance of success.

"A Global Business Harmonization initiative can deliver significant results in three to six months at a cost of only one to two percent of revenue," said Baum. "Considering that the time and expense of a typical ERP project can range from one to three years, at an average cost 3 percent to 5 percent of revenue, the case for eliminating complexity is clear."

University of Florida and Texas Instruments engineers announce record-setting high-frequency circuit

GAINESVILLE, Fla. and DALLAS, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Engineering researchers from the University of Florida (UF) and Texas Instruments (TI) have crafted the world's highest frequency circuit made with a common type of semiconductor transistor, a step that could slash the price of detectors useful in medicine, environmental monitoring and military applications.

The breakthrough was presented by University of Florida and TI engineers Wednesday at the International Solid State Circuits Conference in San Francisco.

Ken O, a UF professor of electrical and computer engineering and the lead researcher on the project, said his team had demonstrated a 410 gigahertz (GHz) circuit using complementary metal oxide silicon (CMOS) technology -- the technology used to make many of the components in personal computers, cell phones and handheld electronic devices.

Measured in a UF laboratory using a circuit equipped with a tiny on-chip antenna the size of a pen tip, 410 GHz eclipses the previous record for CMOS circuits set in February 2006 by 200 GHz. More important, it is around 60 GHz higher than the previous record set using alternative but more expensive indium phosphide technology. TI's advanced manufacturing technology, known as the 45-nanometer (nm) CMOS process, serves as the foundation for the new circuit.

"This is probably the first time in 30 years that a silicon based circuit has been shown to have a higher operating frequency than one based on indium phosphide and similar compounds," O said. "This is exciting because if you can build chips based on these circuits, then you can build inexpensive detection and imaging systems for a range of applications. The result could reduce the cost for these systems by a factor of 100 or more."

Ultra-high frequency circuits have been created in the past, but only with exotic materials that are costly to manufacture. CMOS, by contrast, is the standard process used to make the majority of the chips in the integrated circuit industry, therefore opening the door for widespread manufacture and distribution of the high-frequency chips.

"There is a very rich applications space that is available, but nobody has been able to get there in the high volume sense," O says. "By leveraging Texas Instruments' advanced process technology for manufacturing this circuit, the University of Florida and TI demonstrate that through CMOS there is real possibility we will be able to do it in the next five years."

These applications include, for example, always-on environmental monitoring equipment acutely sensitive to pollution, noxious gases or bioterrorism agents. In imaging, high-frequency chips make possible techniques that can penetrate clothing to 'see' hidden weapons or plastic explosives. The circuit could also be used in chips for medical equipment that could facilitate early detection of skin and other cancers, and in industrial systems that monitor the coatings on pills to ensure they have the proper thickness and uniformity.

The other authors of the paper that is the source of Wednesday's announcement are Eun-Young Seok, Changhua Cao, Dongha Shim, Daniel Arenas and David Tanner, all of the University of Florida, and Chih-Ming Hung of TI.

"University research is critical for moving the technology industry forward, and Texas Instruments is proud to be part of University of Florida's ground-breaking work," said Bill Krenik, chief technology officer of TI's wireless terminals business unit. "By leveraging the high performance and low power consumption that CMOS process technology delivers, the circuit demonstrates very compelling results that hold great potential for chips targeted at future safety, medical and environmental applications."

The circuit was demonstrated on TI's low power 45-nm process technology. The process includes a number of techniques to deliver cost-effective multi-million transistor, system-on-chip processors with the performance and lower power consumption required for processing advanced applications. While designed to extend battery life and energy efficiency in portable products, the technology also offers the performance to handle advanced multimedia functionality in a tightly integrated design.

Solutia Files Suit Against Citi, Goldman Sachs and Deutsche BankComplaint Seeks Enforcement of Commitment to Provide Solutia's Exit Financing

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Solutia Inc. today filed a complaint in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York against the three banks that had executed a firm commitment to fund a $2 billion exit financing package for Solutia, but to date have refused to meet this commitment. These banks are Citigroup Global Markets Inc., Goldman Sachs Credit Partners L.P., and Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. Solutia is seeking a court order requiring the banks to meet their commitment and fund Solutia's exit from bankruptcy. The complaint also asserts that the banks should be stopped from invoking the clause they claim relieves them of their obligation due to their improper conduct and misrepresentations to the company, and further claims that the banks fraudulently induced Solutia to enter into the initial engagement by promising that the financing was firmly committed. Solutia and the banks have agreed that Solutia's claim to require immediate funding of the $2 billion package should be heard by the Court on an expedited basis, with the trial to conclude by the end of February -- prior to the expiration of the banks' commitment.

"This is not a 'best efforts' agreement," said Jeffry N. Quinn, chairman, president and CEO of Solutia Inc. "Solutia agreed to pay the banks an enhanced fee in exchange for their firm commitment to fund the full $2 billion exit financing facility -- regardless of the results of the syndication process. We are extremely disappointed by their refusal to meet this commitment and have no choice but to pursue all of our legal remedies."

On October 25, 2007, the banks executed a firm commitment to fund a $2 billion exit financing package for Solutia. These substantial, custom credit facilities and arrangements were specifically tailored to facilitate Solutia's prompt emergence from Chapter 11. On November 20, 2007, the bankruptcy court approved the exit financing package. Nine days later, in reliance on the banks' firm lending commitment, the court found the plan of reorganization to be feasible and confirmed the plan. However, in late January -- shortly before the anticipated closing of the exit facility and Solutia's long-awaited emergence from Chapter 11 -- the banks notified Solutia that they were refusing to provide the funding, citing a so-called "market MAC" provision in their commitment letter and asserting that there has been a change in the markets since entering into the commitment.

"It is a well-documented fact that the ongoing conditions in the credit markets began in the summer of 2007," said Quinn. "Well before the banks committed to Solutia's exit financing, they stated in public filings and through professional advice to Solutia that the credit markets were in disarray, and that the credit crisis would continue for months to come. Despite their concerns and negative outlook, the banks entered into a firm commitment to provide Solutia with this exit financing. The willingness of these banks to offer committed financing that was not subject to a successful syndication was a major factor in deciding to award them this business."

Quinn added, "Solutia is ready to emerge from Chapter 11. We have successfully repositioned our company, we have confirmed a plan of reorganization that brings significant value to our constituents, and our businesses are performing well. We now look to the banks to meet their commitment."

Diocese of Orlando selects Serenic NavigatorTSX Venture Exchange Symbol "SER"

EDMONTON, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Serenic Corporation (TSX-V:SER), ("Serenic" or the "Corporation"), a leading publisher of financial management and business operations software for nonprofits, international NGOs, and the public sector, announced today that the Catholic Diocese of Orlando has selected Serenic Navigator as the organization's new financial management solution.

The Diocese of Orlando was established in 1968, and originally included fifty parishes and served 128,000 Catholics. Because of the explosive growth of the Orlando metropolitan area, engendered by the opening of Walt Disney World and other tourist destinations, the Diocese became one of the fastest growing in the nation. Today, it includes 80 parishes, 10 missions, and 37 schools spread over nine counties of Central Florida. It serves a population of approximately 800,000 Catholics.

The Diocese provides many social services through its diocesan, parish and school ministries, San Pedro Center, the Farmworker Ministry, Bishop Grady Villas and Catholic Charities of Central Florida. Additional information about these services and the Diocese of Orlando can be found at http://www.orlandodiocese.org/.

"The Diocese of Orlando purchased Serenic Navigator based, in large part, on referral information from within Serenic's large community of diocesan clients," said Serenic President and CEO Randy Keith. "They needed to replace their existing AS400 system with software that would provide the advanced budgeting capabilities, automated workflow processing, and investment management capabilities required to effectively manage the fund accounting needs of the Diocese. We are very pleased that they found what they needed in Navigator and happy to welcome them into the Serenic client community."

Navigator, certified for Microsoft Dynamics NAV, is Serenic's flagship financial management product for nonprofits, international NGOs and the public sector. It combines a full suite of integrated industry-specific business operations applications together with sophisticated Microsoft technology.

"We were impressed by Serenic's focus and commitment to the Diocesan community" said Jack Paige, Director of IS and Technology for the Diocese of Orlando. "Serenic's Investment Management product, for example, is a fully integrated component of the Navigator financials solution and is a great fit for our Diocesan Savings and Loan program. This was not something we could find in other products. And since Navigator is based on the powerful Microsoft Dynamics NAV system, we will also have full integration with Microsoft Office."

"After talking to other Serenic clients and completing an intensive review of the product," added Paige, "we are confident that Navigator will empower us to provide the level of accountability and transparency our constituents deserve."
