CTB/McGraw-Hill's Acuity Science Features Innovative Questions to Measure Scientific Reasoning SkillsLeading Formative Science Assessment Product Enables Educators to Craft Custom Assessments
MONTEREY, Calif., March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- As educators seek more tools to boost learning and achievement in science, CTB/McGraw-Hill is bringing interactive items into its Acuity(TM) Science online formative assessment product. Known as "innovative items" throughout the assessment industry, these types of items allow educators to evaluate student understanding of specific scientific reasoning skills relative to state standards. As the only online formative assessment solution to include innovative items, Acuity Science enables teachers in Grades 3-8 to efficiently measure and track student understanding and progress and deliver reports that can inform science instruction.
"Science instructors understand that students need inquiry-based questions that require analytical thinking to fully grasp scientific concepts," said Ellen Haley, president of CTB/McGraw-Hill. "Acuity Science's unique innovative items enable educators to better assess students' proficiency. The addition of an item authoring tool adds even greater flexibility by allowing customization of test items to support learning."
The innovative items, which are modeled after engaging scientific activities, reveal students' science understanding at a greater depth of knowledge. All of the items require students to make interpretations based on the outcomes of scenarios they control. In addition, Acuity Science provides diagnostic tools to support science teaching and learning in elementary and middle school.
Along with an item bank, Acuity Science now also includes an item authoring enhancement that allows educators to create their own test items aligned to their curriculum to supplement the existing assessments provided by Acuity. Acuity Science delivers one early indicator and one predictive assessment, and a series of diagnostic assessments aligned to state standards, to meet science assessment requirements as outlined by No Child Left Behind.
All assessments can be completed in one class period. Acuity Science can be administered online or via paper and pencil.

Mid-Atlantic Nonprofits Can Cash In on the Popularity of Verizon's Products100,000 Nonprofits in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia Can Earn Money Placing Product Orders Under Verizon's Velocity Program
WASHINGTON, March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Local parent-teacher associations, chambers of commerce, athletic boosters, libraries and other nonprofit organizations in three mid-Atlantic states and the nation's capital now have a simple way to earn money for their organizations. And Verizon, in turn, gains about 100,000 potential new marketers for its industry-leading communications, broadband and entertainment services.
Verizon's Velocity Program offers nonprofits in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia the ability to earn donations when their members or supporters purchase certain Verizon products including High Speed Internet, FiOS Internet, FiOS TV, Freedom Calling, Long Distance, and DIRECTV. For instance, organizations can earn up to $65 for a single purchase of FiOS Triple Play with Long Distance.
To qualify, orders must consist of new sales that remain in the billing system at least 30 days from the date of purchase. Changes or upgrades within product categories do not constitute a new sale.
"Verizon Velocity is a simple and convenient way for people to earn donations for their nonprofit organizations without direct selling, inventory or paperwork," said Mary Ellen Payne, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Verizon's Potomac region. "It's the gift that keeps giving. Nonprofits get direct financial support, and their members or supporters get the best communications, broadband and entertainment services."
Verizon recently established a quick and easy online enrollment process that involves only minimal effort on an organization's part. Once verified as a valid nonprofit, the organization will receive an electronic marketing flyer that includes the group's fundraising mission, a special Verizon Velocity Program toll-free number, and a unique tracking code. All the organization must do is e-mail the flyer or tell its members about the program. The more an organization promotes its mission through Velocity, the more donations the organization can earn.
ILDA Community Pool in Annandale, Va., has been a Velocity participant since late 2007. "The monetary gain from the Velocity program has jump-started our outreach and shown members that the ILDA Community Pool is the central hub of the community," said ILDA President Tim Poole, adding that ILDA already received more than $1,800 and plans to encourage more members to sign up for Verizon service.
"Velocity is a win-win. Our members get great Verizon service and ILDA gets some much-needed funding," Poole said.
Interested nonprofits can enroll in, or get more information about, Verizon's Velocity fundraising program at http://www.verizon.com/velocity.

CIBER Completes ERP Project on Time and on Budget for Gramercy Alumina LLC and St. Ann Bauxite Ltd.
GRAMERCY, La., March 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CIBER Enterprise Solutions, a division of CIBER, Inc. , has completed a 6-month, $1.3 million enterprise resource planning (ERP) information technology (IT) system implementation, including the implementation of SAP(R) solutions, for Gramercy, Louisiana-based Gramercy Alumina LLC, and for Discovery Bay, Jamaica-based St. Ann Bauxite Ltd, which are jointly owned by Century Aluminum and Noranda Aluminum. The implementations provide Gramercy and St. Ann with one integrated IT system that contains all of their business and customer information.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010927/CBRLOGO )
The new system replaces numerous disparate IT systems that had been in place for several years and which did not easily share data, resulting in redundant data entry tasks, higher potential for error because of duplicate data entry, and great effort to obtain data needed for strategic business planning.
"We needed to replace our aging legacy systems, which worked well for us for many years, but which could not accommodate our changing needs. We needed a system to integrate data and simplify our business processes, and to provide us with support in terms of software upgrades," said Lu McDonald, Vice President, Finance, Gramercy Alumina LLC.
For the project, CIBER implemented SAP applications for the following functionalities: sales and distribution, materials management (incl. purchasing and warehousing), plant maintenance (incl. preventive and breakdown maintenance), finance and controlling, asset management, and human resources (incl. personnel administration, organizational management, benefits, and time management).
Gramercy and St. Ann's are using the SAP ERP application as part of their new system.
"We didn't have the expertise to implement a project of this magnitude, so we turned to CIBER because of their experience with SAP solutions and their ability to meet the specific needs of our industry. By combining dedicated internal resources with experienced CIBER consultants, we successfully implemented an integrated, automated system in an extremely short time frame," said McDonald.
The project was more complex than typical implementations of SAP solutions because of the need to accommodate business process differences between the U.S.-based and Jamaica-based locations.
"Gramercy Alumina LLC and St. Ann Bauxite Ltd. operate in a fiercely competitive industry," said Arnold Nel, Vice President of CIBER's SAP Practice. "Their leaders truly understand and value the important role IT can play in providing business efficiencies and competitive advantage in a challenging marketplace. We are very pleased they selected us as their implementation partner to complete such a strategic and essential initiative."
CIBER provides information technology services to private and public companies as well as to local, state, and federal government entities. CIBER was recently ranked the eighth best global IT outsourcing vendor of more than 4,000 vendors worldwide, and the 12th best overall outsourcing vendor worldwide, according to a June 2007 Brown-Wilson Group survey. The Brown- Wilson Group conducts annual surveys of CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, and other business decision-makers at Fortune 2000 organizations to understand users' evaluations of global outsourcing service providers.

Citysearch & Antenna Audio Deploy Scanbuy's Mobile Barcode Technology to San Francisco, Enabling Instant Access to InformationScanbuy's Technology Turns Camera Phones into Barcode Scanners - Connecting People to Local Information On-the-Go for the First Time in US
NEW YORK, March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Citysearch, a leading online local information guide and an operating business of IAC , and Antenna Audio, a global leader in audio interpretation, announced separately today that they will deploy Scanbuy's advanced barcode technology giving mobile phone users instant access to a wide range of local information when and where they need it most. Today's launch marks the first time Scanbuy's technology has been used to deliver local, mobile content in the United States.
By using ScanLife technology from Scanbuy, a global leader in mobile marketing solutions that turns camera phones into barcode scanners, Citysearch will link San Francisco users to local content on various restaurants, businesses and leading services while Antenna Audio will provide instant information about local historical landmarks.
More than 500 restaurants and businesses in San Francisco will display ScanLife 2D barcodes, called EZcodes, which deliver Citysearch's original and consumer-generated reviews directly to a user's phone, allowing immediate access to relevant information and eliminating the extra steps of typing lengthy website addresses into mobile browsers.
"People visit Citysearch.com daily for information about places to go in their city and now with ScanLife EZcodes, they can review information exactly when they need it most -- at a local business's front door," said Rob Angel, Vice President, Media & Advertising, Citysearch. "EZcodes give locals and visitors the power of the Internet without having to search through information they don't need. It fundamentally changes the user experience because it allows instant, up-to-the-minute access to the reviews and recommendations most relevant to the user at that moment."
Audio tour provider Antenna Audio, acquired by Discovery Communications, Inc. in 2006, is using ScanLife to provide audio clips of local San Francisco landmarks right to an individuals' mobile phone. This content has historically required hardware rental from locations like museums and galleries.
"In partnering with Scanbuy, Antenna Audio is hoping to drive users of mobile devices to access destination relevant content using ScanLife 2D technology as they explore the city", said Sarah Dines, Managing Director of Antenna Audio for the Americas. "Our goal is to provide a first-rate audio experience for every user, and this mobile technology is a fantastic way to bring tours to as many people throughout San Francisco as possible."
ScanLife technology uses camera phones to connect the physical world to the digital world. Businesses and content providers can use EZcodes to extend brand engagement onto mobile devices. At the same time, it affords mobile phone users the luxury of getting the most up-to-date information quickly and easily at the time they are actively making decisions or looking for answers.
All EZcodes can be accessed by users with compatible phones after downloading the free ScanLife software though the mobile browser at http://www.getscanlife.com/, or by texting SCAN to 70734. Because of their simple design, EZcodes are supported by over 65 different camera phone models from all major US wireless carriers. The ScanLife Code Registry and Management platform has been deployed in France, Spain, the Philippines, Brazil and the United States.
"We are thrilled to have the potential of ScanLife fully realized by both Citysearch and Discovery Communications in this project," said Jonathan Bulkeley, Chief Executive Officer of Scanbuy. "These partners are a natural fit, as they provide the most up-to-date and in-depth local information. This is a great opportunity to provide individuals throughout San Francisco instant access to a wealth of information from Citysearch about their favorite places and inside information about historical landmarks from the leader in audio tours, Discovery Communications."

InstantService 'Proactive Chat' Further Extends Omniture Web Analytics and Boosts Online SalesRetailer finds those who chat online with service associates spend 35% more per order
SEATTLE, March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- To help companies convert online shoppers into online buyers, InstantService, Inc., a provider of chat and email management solutions, announced today it has joined Omniture, Inc.'s Genesis Network. The seamless integration between InstantService's proactive chat product, InstantInvite(TM), and Omniture's online business optimization platform will deliver powerful sales, marketing and analytical efficiencies for Fortune 500 ecom retailers, financial services, high tech, transportation, and call centers.
Because InstantService's proactive chat solution generates transactional data, Omniture users will gain a new data stream reflecting online customer and visitor behaviors. Data and analytics derived from these solutions will enable companies to adapt online services and support, including chat, to better engage and help shoppers.
"The more you know about online shopping behavior, the better you can tailor a service and support experience that exceeds customer expectations," said Mike Lande, CEO of InstantService. "With our new integration capability with Omniture, companies will have a smarter way to engage shoppers in chat sessions, viewing site activities and generating meaningful reports for marketing and operational analysis."
Proprietary and published research demonstrates the practicality and timeliness of combining the companies' Web analytics and chat solutions, including:
-- 20% of web chats result in a completed purchase
-- Web chatters spend approximately 35% more per order
-- 30%-40% of Web site traffic includes self-service shoppers (consumers
who make purchase decisions without vendor assistance)
The new e-business offering and partnership with Omniture mark significant milestones in InstantService's enterprise customer strategy. "We are pleased to partner with Omniture to offer more extensive integration capabilities for our customers and move the needle forward on enterprise delivery," added Lande. "Partnerships like this that deliver tangible and measurable customer value and bottom line results are highly valued components of our offering."
How it works
InstantService InstantInvite employs a rules-based engine (instead of human monitoring) to identify shoppers with greatest potential to buy. This unique and innovative approach presents important value at the front and back-end, ensuring privacy for shoppers and increasing agent productivity. The solution also delivers informative data related to chat transactions which enables companies to better assess online customer behaviors, and make adjustments in real time without changes to site code.
Rules for triggering a proactive chat session are based on visitor site interactions and behaviors and commonly include: which pages they have visited, how long they remained on a page, where they came from, which keyword they used to find the website, which items they have in their shopping cart, and whether they are repeat buyers.
Based on these user-defined rules, InstantInvite automatically presents shoppers with a customized invitation to chat live with a customer service representative. With this automatic connection, agents can instantly engage the customer with offers for assistance and incentives in addition to up-sell and cross-sell opportunities.

Raytheon Receives $22.9 Million to Develop Initial Concurrent Test, Training and Operations Capability
TEWKSBURY, Mass., March 27, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- The Missile Defense Agency has awarded a $22.9 million contract modification to Raytheon Company to develop an initial Concurrent Test, Training and Operations (CTTO) capability and integrate it with the Missile Defense System Exerciser.
This modification to Raytheon's Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) program contract calls for establishing a dedicated ground test development radar lab. Additionally, the modification requires building an electronic interface to the centralized test execution controller in order to automate BMDS test execution and prototype a simulated versus live target identification.
"The CTTO solution developed by Raytheon will provide our customer with the capability to test, train and build confidence on the currently deployed ballistic missile defense assets while simultaneously maintaining full control over the tactical operational mission," said Pete Franklin, vice president, National & Theater Security Programs for Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems.
CTTO supports the need to inject component-based capability enhancements to deployed assets while maintaining the tactical mission. It also enables test and verification of new BMDS capabilities such as the system discrimination architecture, which will be implemented in the 2009-2012 timeframe. Raytheon is currently supporting the concept refinement, architecture definition and high-level requirements generation of CTTO through reachback support to the Missile Defense National Teams.
Work will be performed at the company's Missile Defense Center, Woburn, Mass.; Integrated Air Defense Center, Andover, Mass.; and the Warfighter Protection Center, Huntsville, Ala.
Integrated Defense Systems is Raytheon's leader in Joint Battlespace Integration providing affordable, integrated solutions to a broad international and domestic customer base, including the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, the U.S. Armed Forces and the Department of Homeland Security.

Spring Cleaners Asked to Dust Off and Recycle Old Wireless PhonesVerizon Wireless' HopeLine(R) Program Puts Wireless Phones in Hands of Domestic Violence Victims
LAUREL, Md., March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- For those who remember the old adage about a place for everything and everything in its place, take note. Verizon Wireless is asking consumers to rescue any old cell phones that might be sitting unused in kitchen drawers and glove compartments and donate them to the company's HopeLine phone recycling program.
Through HopeLine, Verizon Wireless collects previously owned wireless handsets and accessories to be refurbished, recycled and/or sold. Proceeds from the HopeLine program benefit victims of domestic violence through the donation of wireless phones and service and financial grants to support non-profit advocacy agencies. Verizon Wireless' stores throughout the nation serve as drop-off locations, and HopeLine collects phones and accessories from any wireless service provider.
"Many of us will soon be embarking on one of the rituals of the season: spring cleaning," said Tami Erwin, regional president, Verizon Wireless, Washington, Baltimore, Virginia. "Because of the frequency with which Americans upgrade their wireless phones, we know that there are millions of unused cell phones waiting to be donated to the HopeLine program. Our message is when you dust, don't forget to donate."
With more than 256 million wireless customers in the United States, wireless phones are one of the hottest consumer products being sold today. With trends changing every minute, the "must have" cell phone also changes frequently, and old wireless phones are often replaced by newer models.
Recycling cell phones leads to significant environmental savings. In addition to keeping valuable materials out of landfills and incinerators, recycling just 1 million cell phones reduces greenhouse gas emissions equal to taking 1,368 cars off the road for a year.
Since 2001, consumers have donated more than 4.5 million phones to HopeLine. In turn, Verizon Wireless has distributed more than $5 million in HopeLine cash grants to domestic violence prevention and awareness programs across the country and provided more than 60,000 phones with airtime and other features. In addition, the program has kept more than 200 tons of electronic waste and batteries out of landfills. For more information on Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program or for instructions on donating a wireless phone, visit http://www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.

Alcatel-Lucent Introduces the New Services Edge, With Terabit Performance on Industry-Leading IP and Carrier Ethernet Router PortfolioBreakthrough Silicon Innovations Enable More Speed, More Services and More Availability
PARIS, March 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- To help operators around the world meet the demand for higher bandwidth and scale, a richer service mix, reduced cost and increased availability, Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has today announced extensive enhancements to its industry-leading IP service routing portfolio. Leveraging breakthrough silicon innovations from one of the industry's most experienced R&D teams, the 7750 Service Router (SR) and 7450 Ethernet Service Switch (ESS) now deliver Terabit performance, providing the bandwidth, scale and service awareness required to support the growing market for more personalized, broadband offerings such as IPTV, WebTV, Virtual Private Networks, and 3G/4G mobile.
The 7750 SR and 7450 ESS enhancements leverage Alcatel-Lucent's unique new FP2 chipset (for network processing and traffic management) - the result of a three-year development effort - which delivers sophisticated and optimized network processing and traffic management at speeds up to 100 Gb/s. The upgrades to the current products include more than double the density of Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports as well as supporting up to 10 times the number of services per router - reducing CAPEX and OPEX as well as being more efficient from a power/bandwidth perspective. The FP2 chipset also provides a clear path to 100 Gigabit Ethernet, vastly improving Return on Investment (ROI) versus other edge routers which currently use much lower performing and lower scale 10 Gb/s Network Processors.
"Telstra's wireline transformation to implement a common IP core network is delivering multiple services at lower costs and faster speeds with improved network reliability. This enables us to provide our customers with access to more scaleable and advanced broadband services, offering 99.999 per cent reliability," said Greg Winn, Telstra Chief Operations Officer. "Alcatel-Lucent's technology is a part of our Telstra Next IP(TM) network and the latest upgrades will enable Telstra to continue to innovate and grow our broadband service offerings."
The Terabit enhancements to the Alcatel-Lucent IP/MPLS service routing portfolio address three fundamental service provider requirements for IP network transformation:
- More speed - delivering Terabit routing and Carrier Ethernet capacity to support new opportunities for mass-market video-based services and applications;
- More services - including secure IPSec (IP Security) Virtual Private Networks (VPN) as well as Ethernet VPNs and IP VPNs, plus application assurance, leveraging Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technology to help drive new service and revenue models;
- More availability - best-in-class node, link and network high availability, leveraging existing support for non-stop routing, non-stop services and In-Service Software Upgrades (ISSU)
Alcatel-Lucent has shipped more than 20,000 IP/MPLS systems since 2004, resulting in an installed base of more than 200 service provider customers in 90+ countries. The new portfolio enhancements address a Service Provider Router and Metro Ethernet Switch market with a forecasted CAPEX of more than USD 50 billion between 2006 and 2010 (source: Infonetics, August 2007).
"We've established a solid history of innovation and reliability in IP/MPLS platforms, software and services, which has resulted in new revenue opportunities for our customers," said Basil Alwan, President of Alcatel-Lucent's IP business. "This is a transformative period in our industry and, since 2003, we've led the way with a transformative service-aware and application-aware approach to IP/MPLS routing. With these seamless Terabit service routing upgrades, massive service scaling and integration as well as best-in-class high availability, we're continuing to deliver on this commitment to our customers."

WATERLOO, ON, March 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Open Text(TM) Corporation , a global leader in enterprise content management (ECM), today announced a partnership with the University of Waterloo to create one of the world's largest centres dedicated to research and innovation in digital media and Web 2.0 for business, government and cultural applications.
Under the plan, Open Text will contribute funding, technology and services for the development of the Open Text Centre for Digital Media Research. As part of its commitment, Open Text will provide its executives and thought leaders as contributing faculty, sharing their experience in the classroom. The Centre will be dedicated to research projects and commercialization of ground-breaking software applications, giving students an opportunity to apply their ideas to real-world business opportunities. The location provides a unique setting that will bring the worlds of business, art and the Internet together in an environment focused on creating innovative new software applications.
"From Facebook to YouTube to Wikipedia, we are witnessing a revolution in the way consumers socialize, share knowledge and harness collective intelligence," said Tom Jenkins, Executive Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer for Open Text.
