Dot Hill Enters SAS Market with 2530 RAID ArrayBased on Dot Hill's Proven R/Evolution Architecture, the 2530 Offers Enterprise Performance and Scalability as well as Advanced Data Protection ServicesSAS Interface Combined with SAS/SATA Drives Yields Cost Effective Storage Solution
ORLANDO, Fla., April 7, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- STORAGE NETWORKING WORLD SPRING 2008 -- Dot Hill Systems Corp. , a market leader in providing flexible storage offerings and responsive service and support to OEMs and system integrators (SIs), today launched its 2530 Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) RAID storage solution.
The newest iteration of its high-performance, modular enterprise Series 2000 storage platform, the 2530 marks Dot Hill's entry into the SAS market. Priced competitively, the 2530 offers both enterprise performance and scalability as well as advanced data protection services.
The 2530 includes two 3 Gb SAS interfaces per controller to internal SAS or SATA-II disk drives with 1 GB of mirrored cache per controller. Featuring a 12-drive 2U form factor, the 2530 supports up to 56 low cost, high capacity SAS and SATA disk drives, offering customers the ability to freely mix drives in a single enclosure or in individual expansion trays for capacity that scales from 1.7 TB base capacity to up to 56 TB. Additionally, the product features a number of data protection services, such as snapshot and volume copy; the 2530 comes standard with 16 snapshots and offers customers the flexibility to add up to 64 snapshots via an optional license. The product also comes with high-availability features such as active-active controllers and MPIO.
The next generation replacement for the SCSI interconnect protocol, SAS is rapidly overtaking SCSI in port shipments of direct-attached storage. Many industry analysts believe that SAS may challenge Fibre Channel as the technology of choice for smaller SANs, with its attractive combination of low cost and high performance. SAS also is considered a scalable and flexible storage technology alternative for self-contained blade server and rack mount server environments, which continue to enjoy broad market adoption.
"While some vendors are taking a tentative approach in bringing SAS RAID products to market, Dot Hill is taking a leadership position, offering a strong SAS RAID solution to meet the emerging and future needs of our OEM customers," said Dana Kammersgard, president and chief executive officer, Dot Hill. Kammersgard added that the 2530 is currently in evaluation/qualification testing by nearly one-third of Dot Hill's more than 25 OEM and SI partners worldwide.
"The 2530, based on Dot Hill's proven R/Evolution storage platform, rounds out our product family which supports the entry level to the midrange through Fibre Channel, iSCSI, and now SAS protocols," continued Kammersgard. "To date, Dot Hill has more than 10,000 units built on the R/Evolution architecture in the field."
"Data growth, crowded data centers and power efficiency demands are driving customers to deploy more blade server and rack-mounted server configurations. Such implementations need access to flexible, high-performing, and -- most importantly -- cost-effective storage solutions. SAS-based external attached storage balances all of these necessities; and, with smaller form factor drives scheduled for later this year, the product benefits are only going to improve," said Mark Peters, analyst with ESG. "The market for SAS external storage offerings is still in its infancy, but Dot Hill's 2530 offering, based on its innovative and proven R/Evolution storage architecture, should help boost storage OEMs' entrance into this fast-growing opportunity."
The R/Evolution product line offers superior modular scalability and features resulting in higher return on investment and lower total cost of ownership. The modular, dynamic system offers high availability and a fault-tolerant design, and allows customers the ability to easily customize their storage systems geared to performance or capacity, and/or to meet their specific business requirements.
Customers seeking maximum configuration flexibility and investment protection can benefit via the ability to upgrade or migrate from one Dot Hill RAID solution to another, easily and cost effectively via a data-in-place controller upgrade. For example, customers can move from a Dot Hill Series 2000 entry-level RAID offering to its midrange Series 5000. This unique capability promotes sound financial planning with the re-use of disk drive purchases by exchanging entry-level controllers as needed.
Dot Hill Delivers Technology Advantage
As a member of the Series 2000 line, the 2530 leverages the following advanced technologies, delivering price performance leadership and scalability:
-- SimulCache(TM) -- leverages redundant RAID controllers, thus
eliminating the performance degradation associated with conventional
cache mirroring. The implementation of a high-speed dedicated
PCI-Express bus streamlines write performance resulting in superior
overall system responsiveness driving faster application throughput in
database-related deployments.
-- AssuredSnap(TM) -- Dot Hill's snapshot technology for improved data
availability and business continuity. AssuredSnap creates a
point-in-time virtual copy of data that the system can roll back to, in
the event of data loss or corruption. All snapshots are preserved in
the event of a roll back; AssuredSnap also features a unique roll
forward capability. Additional AssuredSnap features include writeable
snapshots for real-time data mining, rapid application development, the
preservation of original and written data, and snapshot reset for
scripted backups.
-- AssuredCopy(TM) -- Dot Hill's volume copy technology, which provides
the ability to create independent data volume copies to protect against
accidental/malicious loss or corruption of data, and/or RAID group or
complete volume failure. AssuredCopy also enables non-disruptive use of
production data for business analytics or application development and
test, mitigating resource contention and performance impact on
production volumes.
-- EcoStor battery-free alternative for cache back up -- an
environmentally friendly "green," battery-free alternative that
leverages a combination of super capacitors and compact flash
technology for non-volatile cache memory. With up to a 10-year life
span, the solution eliminates service calls for battery replacement,
new battery inventory management, and the issues of battery disposal,
as well as the periodic replacement downtime associated with batteries.
Additionally, it offers an improved customer experience upon
installation or power restore as it does not require lengthy battery
charging time. The array operates in high-performance write-back cache
mode within minutes of installation, versus hours with batteries.
Evaluation units of the 2530 are now available, and Dot Hill expects general availability of the 2530 in the second quarter of 2008.

NEW YORK, April 7, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- McGraw-Hill Construction, part of The McGraw-Hill Companies , today announced that information on 80,000 building products from its Sweets Network will be integrated directly into Soloso.aia.org, The American Institute of Architects' comprehensive online resource for insight, knowledge, solutions, strategies, products, and trends.
"McGraw-Hill Construction is very excited to be working with the AIA to serve its members by integrating building manufacturers' product information from the McGraw-Hill Construction Sweets Network into this new, powerful tool," said Per Lofving, McGraw-Hill Construction senior director. "In addition to finding products in Soloso, AIA members will also be able to link directly to detailed information in the Network, where they can download product catalogs, CAD details, 3D models, and 3-part specifications -- saving the architect time, helping them make better decisions about products, and ensuring accuracy," he added.

Now, architects will be able to search for products in Soloso, and using powerful navigation tools, will be able to further pinpoint what they need. McGraw-Hill Construction will provide AIA with regular updates as building product manufacturers change or add information on Sweets Network."

Most Advanced Straight-to-the-Home Fiber Network in America to Enhance Selected Properties Owned by American Homeownership InitiativeAHI Program, Designed to Make Affordable Homeownership a Reality for More People, to Include Verizon Technology Upgrades; 'Smart' Living Units Will Allow Residents Opportunity to Use Verizon's FiOS Service, Which Delivers the Online Experience of the Future - Today
PHILADELPHIA, April 7, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Homeownership Initiative, a newly formed nonprofit organization that is launching an innovative program to enable more people to purchase affordable homes, is teaming up with Verizon to give as many of these new homeowners as possible access to Verizon's all-fiber-optic FiOS services.
Under an agreement, Verizon will deploy its fiber-optic network to the single- and multi-family properties that AHI acquires and that are located in areas served by the network.
AHI and Ownermakers LLC, the initiative's co-founder and consulting management company, developed the program to help people who may not meet traditional home-buying requirements -- like large down payments, credit history or annual income -- purchase an apartment or home with a minimal down payment. The program will begin in Philadelphia and will be extended nationally over the next several years.
"Future AHI multi-family apartment residents will enjoy the amazing voice clarity, Internet speed and tremendous reliability that Verizon FiOS provides," said Eric Cevis, vice president of Verizon Enhanced Communities, the Verizon business organization that markets and sells communications services to single- and multiple-home properties. "Our alliance with AHI will help us expand the reach of FiOS to an even broader base of consumers representing diverse socio-economic backgrounds."
The plan to make Verizon FiOS services available at certain AHI properties in the future reflects the competitive advantage Verizon's fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network offers developers in marketing their properties, said Cevis.
"AHI plans to create 500,000 homeowners by the year 2014," said AHI executive director Bill Stratton. "Once we have acquired a building, we will convert it into a 'smart,' 'green,' and affordable place. We know residents will appreciate our foresight in making available to them 'smart' communications services from Verizon, which will support their immediate and future technology needs."
After acquiring a rental property, AHI will also work with other companies such as Whirlpool and Lowes Home Improvement.
About Verizon FiOS Services
Verizon's ultra-fast FiOS Internet service is now available to customers in parts of 16 states, delivering up to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) download and 20 Mbps upload in six of those states. In Pennsylvania, the maximum FiOS download speed currently offered is 30 Mbps and the maximum upload speed currently offered is 15 Mbps.*
While other communications companies brag about their speeds, they're talking about speed in only one direction. Verizon offers the fastest upload and download speeds available today, and recently Verizon introduced a new, symmetrical Verizon FiOS Internet service for consumers. The service features a download speed of up to 20 Mbps and an equally blistering upload speed of up to 20 Mbps - up to 25 times faster than cable's typical upload speed of about 768 kilobits per second (Kbps).
At 50 Mbps, downloading a 1.2 GB (gigabyte), or 90-minute, standard-definition movie takes approximately 3.2 minutes. Upload speeds of up to 20 Mbps make modern video and file-sharing a snap over the nation's only large-scale fiber-optics network that extends all the way to customers' homes or small- and medium-sized businesses. With a 20 Mbps upstream broadband connection, a user could upload a 250 megabyte (MB) file or a 3,500 page document in about 90 seconds, compared with about 47 minutes over a 768 kilobits per second (kbps) upstream connection.
FiOS TV, a powerful alternative to cable offered in parts of 13 states, is only available in states or towns where a state-issued or local video franchise has been obtained.

Students at Nation's Online Higher Education Programs Find More Support to Help Them SucceedeCollege, InsideTrack Join Forces to Provide Richer Learning Experience, Improve Student Retention
DENVER, April 7, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Students at many of the nation's leading online higher education programs have access to more support services aimed at improving their success in college and beyond, now that two of the nation's top providers of educational services have joined forces.
InsideTrack, a provider of student coaching services to colleges and universities, and eCollege, the nation's leading provider of comprehensive online learning technology, have formed a strategic partnership to offer InsideTrack's Success Coaching service at colleges and universities that use eCollege's online learning platform.
Success Coaching connects coaches with students to provide guidance, structure and feedback to help students be more effective in school and in life. Success Coaching complements student services such as advising, counseling or mentoring and consists of weekly, one-to-one, live sessions over the phone between students and trained, InsideTrack-certified coaches. Success Coaches help students to identify goals and create action plans to achieve those goals. Each week, students review their progress with their coach to stay focused on priorities and motivated to achieve.
Success Coaching has been proven in over 50 studies to improve student engagement, first-year retention, and persistence to graduation-typically a 20-25% reduction in student attrition. In addition to having a significant positive impact on students' higher education experiences, the Success Coaching service also improves revenue opportunities for universities. The program can be implemented quickly and pays for itself.
eCollege's comprehensive learning platform offers students effective online programs in a reliable course management system. Winner of the IMS Global Learning Consortium's 2007 user satisfaction award in the both the Course Management System and Services categories, and a finalist for the Software & Information Industry Association's (SIIA) 2008 CODiE Award for Best Postsecondary Enterprise Solution, the eCollege course management system offers a complete approach to eLearning for schools. eCollege provides all of the technology to support online learning, allowing schools to focus on learning, instead of maintaining and supporting complicated hardware and software.
"Today's announcement reflects InsideTrack's ongoing commitment to helping our partner colleges educate and support online learners," said Paul Reddy, Vice President of Business Development for InsideTrack. "The eCollege platform already provides quality eLearning to thousands of students at several leading universities. By partnering with this powerful online course management system, InsideTrack has an opportunity to coach already engaged students toward an improved college experience and greater success."
"eCollege's partnership with InsideTrack extends the value that we offer to higher education institutions," said Matthew Leavy, President of eCollege. "InsideTrack's Success Coaching services have continually increased their client college's graduation rates. By bringing our learning services together, institutions are able to offer students the flexibility and convenience of online education, as well as the support and coaching that have a huge impact on their success."
Direct coaching is one of many tools that an education institution can use to increase retention and graduation rates. Both InsideTrack and eCollege provide robust analytics tools that help track student activities and achievement, as well as the practices within programs that lead to success. eCollege offers a variety of reporting and data-analysis tools to help institutions identify what is working in their online programs, in addition to operational and academic support services that help drive success. The InsideTrack Catalyst application is a performance-reporting tool that allows universities to measure and manage the effectiveness of coaching teams and the coaching service across cohorts. Additionally, RightTrack is a student-centric application that enables coaches to work with students on managing their commitments and evaluating their progress towards obtaining their degree. The companies expect integrations between the two software platforms to support the analytics needs of their clients.
With eCollege and InsideTrack, client institutions can benefit from the integration of both companies' technologies and support. The eCollege platform provides an efficient eLearning platform with powerful tracking tools, while InsideTrack provides an important service dimension to coach, manage and measure student success. This combination of tools and services will have measurable return on their investment and help drive higher success rates for students in online education programs.

Atmel's AVR ONE! High-End Development Tool Improves Performance and Provides Significant Development Cost Savings for 8- and 32-bit Microcontrollers
SAN JOSE, California, April 7 /PRNewswire/ --
Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML), announced today its AVR(R) ONE!
high-end debugger for AVR(R) and AVR32 microcontrollers. Atmel is committed
to offer quality development tools at an affordable price. One unique
high-end on-chip debugging platform for all AVR and AVR32 devices: this is
AVR ONE! available at US$599 only while similar tools usually cost thousands
of dollars. The new debug tool will help customers to speed up their design
and get to the market faster.
The AVR32 microcontrollers and processors are the first devices to be
supported by AVR ONE! and will be followed by most of the tinyAVR(R),
megaAVR(R) and XMEGA(TM) devices during 2008. AVR ONE! customers will get
free of charge upgrades as Atmel extends support to all AVR devices.
The AVR ONE! speeds up programming and supports non-intrusive observation
and logging of how the embedded system performs. This allows the software
engineer a clear view of real time system behavior, without affecting or
modifying the real time characteristics of the microcontroller.
High speed program and debug -- The new AVR ONE! is a high-end JTAG and
Nexus on-chip debugger that is designed to deliver accurate monitoring of
system behavior in embedded systems built around AVR and AVR32
microcontrollers and application processors. Faster communication between the
PC and the target microcontroller speeds up the flow of debug data, and the
user will notice the improved responsiveness to user input. Programming
microcontrollers with large on-chip flash memories will be up to 3 times
faster than existing debuggers.
Real time debugging -- The AVR ONE! offers advanced real-time debugging
features. In addition to basic programming and on-chip debugging via the
traditional 4-pin JTAG port, the AVR ONE! supports debugging via the Nexus
port, an 8-bit parallel port found on all AVR32 devices. Inside the AVR32
microcontroller, the Nexus port is connected by a separate data bus to all
the on-chip peripherals and memories. The separate bus allows the debugger to
monitor and modify system behavior in every part of the microcontroller
without interrupting or affecting the timing of the program running in the
microcontroller. The AVR ONE! can be connected live to a running application
without interference.
Real-time trace -- The AVR32 Nexus debug interface is connected to the
AVR32 CPU's trace port. This is a port which outputs vital statistics about
CPU behavior and the software running. This real-time trace data is captured
by the AVR ONE! debugger and forwarded to the PC, where the user can
reconstruct the steps taken by the CPU leading up to an erroneous state from
a 2 GB data buffer. This marks a breakthrough in on-chip debugging, allowing
for the first time an on-chip trace port in a non-bondout version of all
AVR32 microcontrollers.
A complete line-up of debuggers -- The AVR ONE! expands Atmel's line-up
of on-chip debug adapters, which already consists of the very popular JTAGICE
mkII and the low cost AVR Dragon introduced last year. Customers can now
choose the tool that best fits their needs and budgets.
AVR32 Studio v2.0 -- To support the new AVR ONE! on-chip debugger, Atmel
has released version 2.0 of its popular AVR32 Studio project manager and
debugger front-end. In addition to full support for the new AVR ONE! on-chip
debug adapter, the new version of AVR32 Studio has even better integration of
the AVR32 Software Framework, Atmel's large library of optimized device
drivers, DSP math functions and communication stacks. AVR32 Studio and AVR32
Software Framework is available free of charge from Atmel's web site.
Availability and Pricing -- The new AVR ONE! is available now and is
priced at US$599.
About Atmel
Atmel is a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of
microcontrollers, advanced logic, mixed-signal, nonvolatile memory and radio
frequency (RF) components. Leveraging one of the industry's broadest
intellectual property (IP) technology portfolios, Atmel is able to provide
the electronics industry with complete system solutions focused on consumer,
industrial, security, communications, computing and automotive markets.

Next Inning Technology Publishes State of Tech Report, Updating Outlooks for SanDisk, Micron, Lattice Semiconductor, and Actel
PRINCETON, N.J., April 7, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Next Inning Technology Research ( http://www.nextinning.com/ ), a subscription service focused on semiconductor and technology stocks, announced it has updated outlooks for SanDisk , Micron , Lattice Semiconductor , and Actel .
In his State of Tech report, Editor Paul McWilliams covers roughly 70 companies that, in total, report annual revenues in excess of $700B. The quarterly Next Inning State of Tech has been praised by many professional investors as one of the best tools available for investors during earnings season. New subscribers have the chance to leverage these detailed reports during a 21-day no-risk free trial membership:
https://www.nextinning.com/subscribe/index.php?refer=prn652
In his State of Tech report, McWilliams wrote: "While it was clearly a good idea to vacate SanDisk last October (or even earlier when it was trading at a higher price) as we look to the future, we can see that two factors may well continue to work in the favor of a stronger NAND Flash market..."
McWilliams also looks at these topics:
-- After suggesting readers sell SanDisk when it rallied last October,
McWilliams took a bullish stance March 20th when SanDisk hit a multi-
year low. What is his new sell target?
-- McWilliams suggested readers sell Micron last July at $14. With the
stock down over 50%, is it time to buy?
-- Last June, McWilliams suggested readers sell Lattice at under $6. Have
changes at Lattice caused a shift in opinion?
-- A year ago, McWilliams suggested readers sell Actel in the high $16s.
Now that Actel is compliant with SEC requirements, can investors take a
more positive view?
Founded in September 2002, Next Inning's model portfolio has returned 222% since its inception versus 82% for the Nasdaq.

Atmel's AVR ONE! High-End Development Tool Improves Performance and Provides Significant Development Cost Savings for 8- and 32-bit Microcontrollers
SAN JOSE, Calif., April 7, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel(R) Corporation , announced today its AVR(R) ONE! high-end debugger for AVR(R) and AVR32 microcontrollers. Atmel is committed to offer quality development tools at an affordable price. One unique high-end on-chip debugging platform for all AVR and AVR32 devices: this is AVR ONE! available at US$599 only while similar tools usually cost thousands of dollars. The new debug tool will help customers to speed up their design and get to the market faster.
The AVR32 microcontrollers and processors are the first devices to be supported by AVR ONE! and will be followed by most of the tinyAVR(R), megaAVR(R) and XMEGA(TM) devices during 2008. AVR ONE! customers will get free of charge upgrades as Atmel extends support to all AVR devices.
The AVR ONE! speeds up programming and supports non-intrusive observation and logging of how the embedded system performs. This allows the software engineer a clear view of real time system behavior, without affecting or modifying the real time characteristics of the microcontroller.
High speed program and debug -- The new AVR ONE! is a high-end JTAG and Nexus on-chip debugger that is designed to deliver accurate monitoring of system behavior in embedded systems built around AVR and AVR32 microcontrollers and application processors. Faster communication between the PC and the target microcontroller speeds up the flow of debug data, and the user will notice the improved responsiveness to user input. Programming microcontrollers with large on-chip flash memories will be up to 3 times faster than existing debuggers.
Real time debugging -- The AVR ONE! offers advanced real-time debugging features. In addition to basic programming and on-chip debugging via the traditional 4-pin JTAG port, the AVR ONE! supports debugging via the Nexus port, an 8-bit parallel port found on all AVR32 devices. Inside the AVR32 microcontroller, the Nexus port is connected by a separate data bus to all the on-chip peripherals and memories. The separate bus allows the debugger to monitor and modify system behavior in every part of the microcontroller without interrupting or affecting the timing of the program running in the microcontroller. The AVR ONE! can be connected live to a running application without interference.
Real-time trace -- The AVR32 Nexus debug interface is connected to the AVR32 CPU's trace port. This is a port which outputs vital statistics about CPU behavior and the software running. This real-time trace data is captured by the AVR ONE! debugger and forwarded to the PC, where the user can reconstruct the steps taken by the CPU leading up to an erroneous state from a 2 GB data buffer. This marks a breakthrough in on-chip debugging, allowing for the first time an on-chip trace port in a non-bondout version of all AVR32 microcontrollers.
A complete line-up of debuggers -- The AVR ONE! expands Atmel's line-up of on-chip debug adapters, which already consists of the very popular JTAGICE mkII and the low cost AVR Dragon introduced last year. Customers can now choose the tool that best fits their needs and budgets.
AVR32 Studio v2.0 -- To support the new AVR ONE! on-chip debugger, Atmel has released version 2.0 of its popular AVR32 Studio project manager and debugger front-end. In addition to full support for the new AVR ONE! on-chip debug adapter, the new version of AVR32 Studio has even better integration of the AVR32 Software Framework, Atmel's large library of optimized device drivers, DSP math functions and communication stacks. AVR32 Studio and AVR32 Software Framework is available free of charge from Atmel's web site.
Availability and Pricing -- The new AVR ONE! is available now and is priced at US$599.

Newpoint Technologies and Clearbox Systems Join Forces to Launch the Innovative nControl Product for the Monitor and Control of Small Remote Sites
SALEM, N.H. and SYDNEY, Australia, April 7, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Newpoint Technologies, Inc. and Clearbox Systems Pty. Ltd today announced the introduction of the new nControl product to allow management of small sites that previously were cost prohibitive to effectively manage remotely. nControl is an innovative, cost effective entrant into the market specifically designed to be the complete solution for small remote sites. Usually, these sites are unmanned and as such, it is expensive and time consuming to dispatch technicians to the site to resolve problems, but previously there were no cost effective solutions available on the market to remotely monitor and control these sites.
"The partnership between Clearbox and Newpoint with the introduction of the nControl product will allow customers to manage sites that were previously too small to economically monitor and control remotely." stated Wally Martland, President of Newpoint, "Operators will be able to easily and rapidly remotely manage and recover these sites without incurring the high costs of dispatching technicians to recover routine failures, providing an immediate return on their investment."
Each nControl module consists of a low power, industrial CPU with dual isolated serial and Ethernet ports. A removable SD card allows software and configuration to be moved from module to module, making replacing units or deploying new sites very quick and easy. The SD Card also houses the powerful Newpoint Compass(TM) Software Suite. nControl's low power design (<10W) and broad input voltage range makes it an ideal choice especially in sites that have power constraints.
Compass(TM) provides an extensive driver library which includes support for over 700 different devices ranging from transmitters, microwave radios, UPS and power generators, to standard earth station equipment. Compass also has an SNMP manager which allows the nControl unit to monitor SNMP compatible equipment such as routers, bridges, and firewalls. The Compass SNMP Agent allows data from the remote site to be made available to other management applications. nControl neatly integrates with existing Compass installations by supporting Newpoint's centralized system administration and management software.
"By combining a small, resilient module with the experience and stability of Newpoint's Compass software suite, nControl offers exciting new possibilities for operators of smaller sites. This new approach means that for many customers, monitoring and control can reach further out into a network than was previously feasible because of cost constraints." said Paul Solomon, President of Clearbox Systems.
nControl will be displayed on the Newpoint Technologies stand, Booth C9837 Central Hall, at the NAB Show, in Las Vegas from April 14-17th 2008.
