Verizon Wireless Ranks Essex County Residents #1Positive Response to Company's HopeLine(R) Wireless Phone Recycling Program Benefits Domestic Violence Survivors in New Jersey
SHORT HILLS, N.J., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Essex County residents donated nearly 1,100 no-longer-used wireless phones to the Verizon Wireless HopeLine(R) phone recycling program during 2007 and over 300 in the first quarter of 2008 at the Verizon Wireless Communications Store located at The Mall at Short Hills on 1200 Morris Turnpike, earning the county the title of "Number One HopeLine Recycler" in Northern New Jersey.
A total of nearly 23,500 phones were recycled at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in the New York Metro area last year and more than one million nationwide. Donated phones are refurbished, recycled or sold and the proceeds are donated to domestic violence advocacy groups or used to purchase wireless phones for survivors. Phones that cannot be refurbished are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
"According to the EPA, recycling 100 million cell phones would save enough energy to power more than 194,000 U.S. households with electricity for one year," said Pat Devlin, president of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro Region. "By recycling old wireless phones and accessories through Verizon Wireless HopeLine, New Jersey residents can help save the environment and, just as importantly, can make a difference in the lives of women and children affected by domestic violence."
Verizon Wireless was the first wireless carrier in the nation to collect and recycle old cell phones and has done so since January 1999, first in New Jersey and then across the U.S. Nationally, the HopeLine program has collected more than 4.5 million wireless phones, and given nearly $5 million in cash grants and nearly 60,000 phones with airtime to domestic violence prevention organizations.
In addition to a successful phone recycling program and funding for non-profit domestic violence prevention organizations, HopeLine includes free wireless service and voice mailboxes for survivors, community and corporate awareness initiatives, and a bilingual "Invest in Yourself" program designed to help survivors re-enter the workforce.
HopeLine wireless phone donations also are accepted at all Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in New Jersey and across the nation. For store locations and additional information, visit http://www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.

QSGI Partners With IBM Global Financing to Provide On-Site Data Security and Compliance Services at Customer Locations
HIGHTSTOWN, N.J. and PALM BEACH, Fla., April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- QSGI Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: QSGI) , a leading provider of information technology services to help corporations ensure best practices for data security and regulatory compliance, today announced it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with IBM Global Financing (IGF), the lending, leasing and equipment renewal and recycling business segment of IBM , with respect to QSGI's on-site auditing and data erasure services. Under the MOU, the parties will launch a new pilot program, whereby IGF will offer its customers these services for enterprise storage systems within the data center and distributed computing equipment within the corporate environment. Following a successful pilot program, the parties intend to explore a longer-term definitive agreement around these services.
For IBM customers that utilize the service, QSGI can dispatch a team directly to the customer location to audit and erase IT equipment to all applicable erasure standards, as defined by the client requirements. QSGI's fully automated process eliminates human error by providing a certificate of erasure and audit trail for each piece of equipment. Providing these services on-site eliminates the inherent data security risks associated with transporting the equipment off-site for the purpose of auditing and erasing the equipment. QSGI will also indemnify clients from liability and safeguards these clients from the fines now being levied against companies that improperly return or remarket used equipment.
"Demand is growing among our clients for an on-site data security solution for a full spectrum of IT equipment, ranging from SANs devices, to servers and PCs," said Kevin Cleary, general manager of IGF, Global Asset Recovery Services. "This IBM-QSGI pilot program will add a wide range of on-site services for both enterprise storage devices and distributed computing equipment that include: automated asset auditing, multi-level data destruction services, and documentation for regulatory compliance."
Marc Sherman, chairman and chief executive officer, commented, "We are pleased to be working alongside IBM for on-site auditing and data erasure for its clients' technology lifecycle management services. Our ability to audit and erase large volumes of data quickly and expeditiously at the customer location provides much greater peace of mind to those companies and facilities concerned about the risks of transporting end-of-life or off-lease equipment prior to erasing the confidential data stored on that equipment. We appreciate IBM's strong commitment to protecting the confidential information of their customers and we look forward to an enduring relationship."

Performance Technologies Announces CGL 4.0 Registration for NexusWare(R) Linux(R) Distribution
ROCHESTER, N.Y., April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Performance Technologies , a leading developer of communication platforms and systems, today announced that its Linux(R) OS and development environment, NexusWare(R), has met the Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 4.0 requirements specified by the Linux Foundation. NexusWare V12 is based on the 2.6.20 Linux kernel and conforms to OpenHPI, an open source implementation of the Service Availability Forum's Hardware Platform Interface (HPI).
The specifications set forth by the Linux Foundation define a consistent functionality that meets the demands of complex networking applications. A variety of requirements are included in the CGL 4.0 specification including extended POSIX compliance. This is designed to ease application portability for mainstream communications applications moving to Linux environments. In addition, the CGL standard consists of categories defined by the Linux Foundation that include performance, hardware, standards, serviceability, availability, security, and clustering. New in CGL 4.0 is the prioritization of these requirements. Each requirement is now defined as either mandatory, desired, or roadmap items. By achieving CGL 4.0 registration, Performance Technologies becomes one of only three companies whose software meets this specification.
NexusWare provides a common, pre-integrated Linux OS and development environment for Performance Technologies' embedded products that include CompactPCI(R) and MicroTCA(TM) application-ready platforms, x86 and PowerPC(R) single board computers, voice processing, TDM and sync serial communications, storage, switching, and system management hardware components. Equipment manufacturers can leverage the company's pre-integrated hardware and software solutions to shorten time-to-market and eliminate costly and unnecessary integration steps.
"Performance Technologies believes strongly in the direction the Linux Foundation CGL Work Group is headed with carrier-grade registration as Linux plays a key role in migrating customers off proprietary systems and onto COTS platforms," said Steven Wigent, product manager for Performance Technologies. "Developers in telecommunications, aerospace and defense, as well as commercial industries demand robust software that facilitates maximum availability and scalability to their systems. Vanguard Animation Completes Space Chimps on Time and on Budget With SGI Render Management SolutionSGI Altix XE Servers and PipelineFX Qube! Software Enable 10,000 Frames to Render Each Night
LAS VEGAS, April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NAB Booth SL4314 -- Vanguard Animation's all computer-generated (CG) movie Space Chimps, distributed by 20th Century Fox and due to open in 2,500 theaters July 18, made all deadlines with ease because of technology from SGI and PipelineFX and the digital media expertise of SGI(R) partner Seven Group. In August 2007, realizing their white box servers were not going to be able to handle their multi-gigabyte data file rendering, Vanguard purchased the SGI Render Management Solution to deliver the highest quality images in a timely fashion.
"We purchased the SGI systems for the really big shots, the really big sequences that required massive memory and very high throughput. With the Altix servers we were able to achieve those shots and sequences in a matter of hours rather than a matter of days," said Tom Jacomb, Associate Producer, Space Chimps. "We did 1,720 shots total, and we were running about 3TB of rendering per night. Because of SGI's contributions we were able to deliver on time and on budget."
Vanguard developed a proprietary real-time lighting tool for the Space Chimps project that enabled CG artists to place and locate lights within a scene, which in turn gave them a real-time Renderman environment response, allowing them to work with 90 percent of what the final rendered image would ultimately become.
"Artists were able to use our custom-written lighting tool to pull together scenes and shots, add lights with the art director over their shoulder, and then position them so the key lights and the reflections off of the eyes were all well-placed, and in a very expedient fashion," said co- producer Curtis Augspurger. "We then put it on the farm through PipelineFX Qube! where it would render on the SGI boxes in a significantly faster speed. For five months we were running at 95 to 98 percent capacity and were able to get through about 10,000 frames or 10,000 frame elements per evening. That is very high throughput."
PipelineFX's Qube! uses a central supervisor backed by a MySQL database to manage the queuing and execution of the jobs on the render farm. Qube! software running on all the render farm 'worker' machines, allowed Vanguard to prioritize all the jobs in the queue, while maximizing throughput for the whole farm. The SGI Workflow-Ready Solution for Render Management integrated with and enhanced the performance of the Qube! scheduling and render farm management software.
Space Chimps, an irreverent and comedic adventure starring three chimps that boldly go where no man has gone before, is the latest project from producer and Vanguard CEO John Williams (Shrek, Shrek 2). The film was produced through a partnership between Vanguard Animation and Starz Media. The 80-minute feature employed 330 production people, including 200 CG artists, in the 30,000-square-foot production space in Burnaby, British Columbia.
"Both Curtis and I were working in CG at the start of computer animation, when SGI was the de facto hardware manufacturer," added Jacomb. "It was very pleasing to go back to SGI because they have been so much a part of CG animation history."
Through Seven Group (7gdm.com), Canada's digital media specialist, Vanguard Animation purchased the SGI Render Management Solution consisting of 10 SGI(R) Altix(R) XE310 servers, each powered by four Quad-Core Intel(R) Xeon(R) processors running the Linux(R) environment and optimized for Pipeline FX Qube!
"When Vanguard came to us last year, after several months of production, they had reached the point where they knew they didn't have enough horsepower to render out all the images in the timeframe allotted," said Anthony Brown, Managing Director of Business Development, Seven Group. "We tried to find some way to manage a high density system without having to implement things like blades because they had already gone with a 1U infrastructure. And the highest density 1U infrastructure we could find was the SGI Altix XE310. Being able to get 16 processor cores in a single 1U box gave us the density of traditional blade systems with the flexibility of 1U boxes."
"SGI's innovation in computer animation continues with our powerful, affordable Altix XE servers that have certainly proved their robustness on the production of this major motion picture," said Jim Mukerjee, digital content management segment manager, SGI. "SGI's continued advancements in high density servers allow creative companies such as Vanguard Animation to meet the challenges of animated film production and deliver the best their talents can conceive of -- on time and on budget."

HBO Latin America Group to Launch High-Definition Programming Using Motorola TechnologyMotorola's MPEG-4 distribution system to assist HBO in meeting region's increased interest in high-definition
LAS VEGAS, April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NAB 2008 -- Motorola today announced it will add multiple high-definition (HD) MPEG-4 AVC encoding channels at the HBO Latin America Group (LAG) digital transmission facility located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The new channels will integrate with HBO-LAG's existing Motorola MPEG-2 modular system to facilitate the rapid deployment of HBO's new HD services.
"There has been a marked acceleration in demand for high definition programming in the Latin America region -- with an increase of over 1.4 million HDTV sets in June and July alone," said Pierre Jaspar, senior vice president, technology/operations, HBO. "Motorola's integration of high efficiency MPEG-4 encoding with our existing MPEG-2 transmission and access control system means that we can add new services while continuing to provide a full lineup of programming to our customer base."
The new HD programming will be processed with Motorola's SE-5100 High Definition MPEG-4 AVC encoder. Designed for markets requiring high quality MPEG-4 compression to deliver real-time content, the SE-5100 receives video content and converts it to the MPEG-4 format for distribution via satellite to HBO-LA's affiliates. At the downlink sites, the content will be received and processed with Motorola's new multi-format integrated receiver/decoder (IRD), which can be configured to deliver HD channels in both MPEG-4/AVC and MPEG-2 formats.
"One of Motorola's key design goals is to make sure that our newest technology can be easily and efficiently integrated with our customer's existing systems so that they can continue to meet the demanding and competitive requirements of the entertainment industry," said Doug Means, corporate vice president and general manager, Motorola Home and Networks Mobility. "As migration to high definition programming begins to ramp on a worldwide scale, Motorola remains committed to providing an entire suite of cutting edge products that utilize the most advanced technology for the benefit of our customers."
The SE-5100 MPEG-4 AVC encoder design includes the use of high-speed general-purpose processors which allows the H.264 implementation to remain flexible as MPEG4 optimization continues to mature over the next several years. Unlike MPEG2, MPEG4 has hundreds of tools to choose from to be applied within a fixed compute power environment. Carefully selecting the tools to use -- as well as optimizing implementation of the tools over time -- will enable the SE-5100 to provide superior video quality over a long period of time.
As a long-time leader in HD digital compression systems and a member of the Grand Alliance HD encoding effort, Motorola has deployed hundreds of HD encoding systems in the MPEG-2 standard. The MPEG-4 AVC technology has been optimized for today's content requirements, handling both 1920 x 1080i and 1280 x 720p resolutions at approximately half the bandwidth required with similar MPEG-2 coded signals.

Motorola to Support Active Format Description in its MPEG Products to Drive HD Programming RolloutMotorola's AFD-supported products allow broadcasters, programmers and operators to easily convert high-definition content to standard-definition
LAS VEGAS, April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NAB 2008 -- Motorola today announced its support of Active Format Description (AFD), which allows high-definition (HD) content to be converted to standard- definition (SD) downstream. As many programmers today derive SD content from HD signals to save transponder space and to make distribution easier, our support for this standard gives our customers greater control over their content, easing their transition from SD to all HD content. Motorola will support AFD in its MPEG products, including its HD encoders and its DSR-6000 series digital satellite receiver/transcoders.
"Motorola has made a long-term commitment to the advancement of digital video technology and our support of the AFD standard, which is already being embedded by broadcasters into their content, is another solution we're proud to provide to our customers," said Doug Means, vice president and general manager, IP Video Services, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility. "Our AFD- supported products provide another means of ensuring that our video delivery technology meets viewers' image quality expectations, and that the signal sent over satellite makes it to viewer's TVs as the content producer intended for an ideal viewing experience."
AFD data allows the downstream devices to interpret how a SD picture should be pulled out of a HD stream. For consumers with SD service only, this means that the picture they view is the one that the content producer originally intended by helping control aspect ratios, for example, maintaining a movie in letterbox format with black bars at the top and bottom.
Motorola's AFD-supported HD encoders and the DSR-6010 accepts the embedded data in the video from the content producer and inserts it into the broadcast MPEG stream. The DSR-6010 processes these fields when receiving HD content and properly formats the SD output signal.

"We look forward to expanding platform coverage using Silverlight with PlayReady, which is expected to satisfy industry requirements for content protection and simplify and improve the end-user experience."

LOS GATOS, Calif., April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Hifn(TM) , the catalyst behind storage and networking innovation, today announced a partnership with Cofio Software Inc. to create advanced Virtual Tape Library (VTL) solutions for Small and Medium Enterprise Customers. The Hifn-Cofio VTL platform leverages Hifn's Express DR(TM) data reduction cards and Cofio's ViStor VTL software to create backup solutions that deliver market-leading, VTL performance with the industry's only hardware-accelerated capacity optimization.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070723/CLM036LOGO)
ViStor(TM) 2.0 VTL platform, incorporating Hifn's Express DR card technology, provides an enterprise-class, yet cost-effective, VTL solution designed to meet the performance, reliability and affordability requirements of the SME secondary storage market. The combination of disk-based backup, Hifn's hardware-advantaged and patented capacity optimization technology, and Cofio's powerful ViStor VTL software enables SMB and SME customers to dramatically improve their backup reliability, ensure data integrity and shrink the backup window while leveraging their existing backup infrastructure, polices and procedures.
"Containing data growth and improving backup reliability are two of the biggest storage challenges facing SME IT operations, and the Cofio ViStor VTL with integrated Hifn Express DR capabilities addresses both of those issues in a single integrated solution," said John Matze, vice president of business development at Hifn. "With the massive data loads facing SMEs and the huge processing overhead required for software-based data compression, it is inconceivable that any company would willingly deploy a VTL solution that lacks hardware-advantaged capacity optimization."
"Our partnership with Hifn adds a strong strategic asset to our long-term outlook with their proven leadership in capacity-optimized storage technology," said Tony Cerqueira, President of Cofio. "Additionally, Hifn's Express DR cards deliver an immediate customer benefit by taking the performance of our ViStor VTL -- already the fastest VTL solution on the market -- to the next level."
Hifn's Express DR cards are the industry's first enterprise-class data storage reduction accelerators, providing VTL ISVs with a unique go-to-market advantage with an easy-to-integrate capacity optimization solution that leverages multiple processors to deliver unprecedented compression hardware-offload performance with high reliability and intelligent data reduction features. Designed for critical data storage server environments ranging from continuous data protection (CDP) to network-attached storage and storage area networks (NAS and SAN) and virtual tape library applications (VTL), Express DR improves overall performance and the system total cost of ownership (TCO) while ensuring zero-defect data. The Express DR product line includes Hifn's powerful DR 250 and 255 cards, the industry's first cards that accelerate hashing, compression and encryption algorithms in hardware to off-load the heavy lifting functions and speed up performance to provide multi-gigabit acceleration functions for today's most demanding data de-duplication and data reduction applications.
Cofio's ViStor VTL emulates a physical tape library, allowing backups to travel from disk to disk, speed up backup and restore times, and reduce TCO by seamlessly integrating with an existing backup infrastructure. ViStor provides the ability to split the VTL into multiple libraries, allowing several backup applications to share the same disk resource, and to stage disks to ViStor for centralized backups. The ability to co-exist in the iSCSI and FC worlds gives ViStor a unique edge over other solutions. ViStor is targeted at the system integrator and OEM market, enabling them to extend their disk solution offerings.

ScienceDirect Upgrade to Boost Researcher Productivity and Efficiency
AMSTERDAM, April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- - New and Forthcoming Enhancements Designed to Optimize Research Workflows
Elsevier, a leading publisher of Scientific, technical and medical (STM) information, today announced that new intuitive reference and navigational features have been added to its online STM platform, ScienceDirect. The new features, which were developed in cooperation with researchers, deliver clearer results with fewer clicks. Additionally, researcher comments and ratings from 2collab, Elsevier's free Web-based collaborative platform, will be integrated with the articles in ScienceDirect. With this upgrade researchers will experience a boost in productivity and a faster and more seamless research process.
Navigational Improvements
Researchers typically want to evaluate the relevance of an article without reading through it, and they do so by using the article abstract, figures/graphs and references. To speed up this process, ScienceDirect now offers preview tabs - on the results page or table of contents page - that facilitate one-click access to these components, without the page reloading, enabling a seamless and simple research process.
An article toolbox also improves navigation by bringing together all of the article-related functionality including "Cited By", "E-mail Article" and more, into one easy-to-find location. The toolbox will save time and help customers easily find the tools they need.
Inline reference preview
Researchers can now view reference information when their cursor moves over a reference marker in the body of an article. The information shown includes links to the referenced articles (if available). Researchers will be able to view or download the referenced paper immediately if they wish. Previously, reference information was only available at the foot of the article page.
Results filtering
A new navigation pane on the left of the screen allows researchers to search within results and refine results using four filters: "content type"; "source title", "date" and "topics". By enabling filtering users can refine their search results without having to return to the search form.
Social Media Integration for Improved Collaboration
ScienceDirect will also make it easier for researchers to share and evaluate papers with peers and colleagues by using Elsevier's online collaboration platform, 2collab (http://www.2collab.com/). Subject to a phased release over the coming months, the integration of 2collab will let researchers easily share, discuss and rate article bookmarks to articles and organize articles by adding tags. The comments, ratings and tags that researchers add to articles will be included on each article page in ScienceDirect. This will allow users to post immediate feedback on articles and instantly start global discussions with their peers.
"The new features are part of our ongoing efforts to improve researcher workflows and help them to conduct their research in a faster, more productive manner," said Jay Katzen, Managing Director, Academic and Government Products, Science and Technology Division, Elsevier. "Extensive user testing showed that as research platforms become more efficient, research output is greatly increased and more breakthroughs occur."
ScienceDirect is always striving to add functionalities that help customers research more efficiently and find their desired search results faster. For more information on ScienceDirect, please visit http://www.info.sciencedirect.com/.
