Raytheon Wins $61 Million Contract for Global Positioning Receivers
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., April 16, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company has won a $61 million U.S. Air Force contract to complete the development and certification of next-generation global positioning receivers. The contracting agency is the Global Positioning System Wing at the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles.
Under the Modernized User Equipment program, the circuit card technology will connect military users with new GPS navigation signals compatible with enhanced NAVSTAR GPS satellites. The receivers, which will employ the new M-code military signal, also will work effectively with legacy signal systems.
"The MUE program is raising the capability of military GPS equipment while lowering the cost for the warfighter," said Phil Kelton, MUE program manager for Raytheon's GPS and navigation systems business. "Raytheon's approach to MUE takes advantage of breakthroughs in microelectronics technology, coupled with advanced security solutions to enable higher performance and greater integrity at less cost than today's systems."
Kelton sees potential to achieve "true force-enhancing status" for military GPS capability though the proliferation of low-cost GPS modernized user equipment. Raytheon is teamed on the program with General Dynamics and Trimble Navigation Systems.
"The award of this second phase of the systems design and development contract allows us to complete the custom building-blocks being developed for the next-generation M-code GPS receivers," said Michael Crisp, director of Raytheon GPS and navigation systems. "This technology development will strengthen and preserve the secure GPS navigation capability in the equipment used by the U.S. and its allies in all missions."
In addition, Crisp said, two form factor receiver cards are being developed that will allow modular upgrades of Raytheon's avionics, weapons and integrated sensor systems ahead of the full deployment of the GPS III satellite constellation.
Raytheon Company, with 2007 sales of $21.3 billion, is a technology leader specializing in defense, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world. With a history of innovation spanning 86 years, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing; effects; and command, control, communications and intelligence systems, as well as a broad range of mission support services. PepsiAmericas Awards $4.3 Million Networking Services Contract to AT&TConverging Networks Onto Single Virtual Private Network Enhances Efficiency in U.S., Romanian and Hungarian Operations
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., April 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. today announced that PepsiAmericas , the world's second-largest manufacturer, seller and distributor of PepsiCo beverages, has renewed a contract for communications and network operations services totaling more than $4 million. With the convergence of PepsiAmericas' current networks, PepsiAmericas employees will experience faster and more reliable access and transmission on the company's internal network.
Under terms of the three-year contract, AT&T will migrate PepsiAmericas' existing frame relay services over to AT&T's Virtual Private Network (VPN) services, which are supported by Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology. With the ease and increased synergies of a single network, PepsiAmericas' new VPN service will connect locations in the United States, Hungary and Romania, and it will enable the deployment of advanced voice, data and video applications.
AT&T has also provided PepsiAmericas with High Definition video-bridging technology that allows PepsiAmericas to easily connect all of their locations with a single click of a mouse. AT&T's video-bridging technology allows PepsiAmericas to connect business partners regardless of the video technology that others may use, and it provides proactive monitoring of the network and equipment. This also creates online reports on video applications and network performance, history and usage.
"As PepsiAmericas continues to deliver beverages to consumers everywhere, we recognized the importance of a single set of network services that work on the same global scale as we do," said Dave Edelheit, vice president of Enterprise Infrastructure, PepsiAmericas. "AT&T's MPLS network will not only bring our many locations onto a single fast-track platform, but it will give us the business velocity to better collaborate across business units and partners globally."
AT&T's MPLS technology is the steppingstone for convergence, allowing PepsiAmericas to better manage applications over the network while enhancing network reliability. The single network architecture also eases network management and monitoring responsibilities for PepsiAmericas.

Victhom announces promising results on the proof of concept for its unique closed-loop neuromodulation system
QUEBEC CITY, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Victhom Human Bionics Inc. (Victhom, TSX: VHB) today disclosed initial results from the ongoing human clinical trial of its Closed-Loop neuromodulation System (CLS) used in the Neurostep(TM) for the treatment of patients suffering from foot drop secondary to a central nervous system lesion. According to the Company, the initial results of the trial have demonstrated that the Neurostep(TM) is capable of collecting sensory signals from a nerve and of stimulating the appropriate muscle groups, which represents, to the knowledge of the Company, the world's first proof of concept in a human clinical trial of a CLS product used on peripheral nerves.
The ongoing human clinical trial on the Neurostep(TM) has two major objectives. The first objective is to evaluate the sensing and stimulation mechanisms of the product. The initial results suggest that the Neurostep(TM) is capable of collecting sensory signals from a nerve located in the thigh. The interim results also demonstrate the capacity of the Neurostep(TM), based on the information collected from the nerve, to stimulate the appropriate muscle group to lift the foot in the desired direction and in synchronization with the patient's gait.
The Company expects to announce later this year results on the second major objective of the trial aimed at evaluating the efficacy of the Neurostep (TM) in providing clinically measurable benefits, such as helping patients to walk faster and over longer distances.
Mr. Nader Kameli, Chief Operating Officer of the Neurobionix division, said: "We are excited about the initial results coming out of the clinical trial, which further increase our confidence in the ability of the closed-loop technology to open the door to next generation products in the neuromodulation industry that can deliver therapy to patients in a more effective manner than the continuous or pre-programmed stimulation regimen delivered by current generation devices". Mr. Kameli also stated: "With these promising initial results on the CLS platform proof of concept in humans, Victhom is well positioned to leverage its unique technology for the development of new exciting indications".
The Neurostep(TM), a fully implantable investigational neuromodulation product designed to treat gait disorders (e.g., foot drop), is the first CLS product aimed at using the patient's own nervous system as the source for detection of intention to move and control their leg. Contrary to other systems that use surrogates such as external sensors, the Neurostep(TM) detects intrinsic muscle activities and surface sensation events from the nerve signals delivered to the spine and brain. This information is then used as the trigger for intervention through neurostimulation, as needed, to complete function.

Victhom's Neurobionix business unit focuses on the development and commercialization of technologies and products involving implantable devices that feature neurosensing and neurostimulation components, integrated with artificial intelligence. Supermicro Sets Performance-per-Watt MilestonesIntel CPU-based SuperBlade(TM) Achieves 290 GFLOPS/kW
SAN JOSE, Calif., April 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Super Micro Computer, Inc. , a leader in application-optimized, high performance server solutions, today announced unprecedented performance-per-watt benchmarks using its latest SuperBlade(TM) and 1U Twin(TM) servers. Until recently, a metric of 200 GFLOPS/kW was considered impossible to achieve with conventional x86 technology. However, the Supermicro DatacenterBlade(TM), with its measured 290 GFLOPS/kW*, along with the Supermicro 1U Twin, with 240 GFLOPS/kW*, both easily surpass previous standards of excellence for x86-based servers.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080416/AQW066)
"Industry-leading performance combined with unmatched, earth-friendly power efficiency, make Supermicro SuperBlade(TM) and 1U Twin(TM) servers the best choices for all large-scale server environments seeking to optimize both performance and power consumption," said Charles Liang, president and CEO of Supermicro. "In the $11 billion HPC market, Supermicro's leading performance-per-watt servers help our customers save significantly on their energy bills and total cost of ownership (TCO)."
"With outstanding performance and power efficiency, Mellanox(R) InfiniBand-accelerated, Supermicro SuperBlade(TM) and 1U Twin(TM) servers are industry-leading choices for enterprise data center environments and high- performance computing applications," said Eyal Waldman, chairman, president and CEO of Mellanox Technologies, Ltd. "Our low-latency, high-throughput ConnectX adapters enhance multi-core CPU application processing efficiency optimizing performance, power and return on investment of clustered computing and storage systems."
Performance-per-watt, a measure of computational green efficiency, is calculated as GFLOPS (billions of floating point operations per second) divided by the power consumed (measured in kW) of a given system. LINPACK, an industry benchmark for HPC systems, is used to measure system performance in GFLOPS. Total power consumption was measured for each system during LINPACK operation. The resulting ratio provides a normalized method to compare the green efficiency between various servers.
For the ultimate in energy efficiency (93%*) and performance-per-watt (290 GFLOPS/kW), Supermicro is introducing the new SBI-7425C blade server optimized for its new 14-blade 7U DatacenterBlade(TM) enclosure (SBE-714D), which is ideal for data center environments. In addition, the new SBI-7125C blade server in the 10-blade 7U OfficeBlade(TM) enclosure (SBE-710Q) provides industry-leading energy efficiency and low-noise operation at less than 50dB, making it an excellent choice for office environments.
Alternatively, for the best 1U data center solution (240 GFLOPS/kW), Supermicro's new 1U Twin(TM) 6015TC SuperServers feature two DP server nodes in a single chassis and a 780-watt (90%+*) high-efficiency power supply. This 0.5U density (84 server nodes in a standard 42U rack) makes these platforms an excellent choice for high-performance computing clusters, server farms and other datacenters where space, cost, energy-efficiency and density are high priorities.

Postilion Introduces Enhanced Active/Active ATM Driving Solution for Financial InstitutionsLatest initiative from Postilion transforms ATM driving and improves service performance levels
NORCROSS, Ga. and LONDON, April 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Postilion, a leading provider of software solutions for self-service banking and payments and a division of S1 Corporation , today announced the launch of enhancements to its ATM Driving solution. The Postilion ATM Driving solution can now be deployed in an active/active environment, ensuring higher ATM network availability while maintaining financial transaction integrity.
In an active/active Postilion environment, two production systems process transactions simultaneously across the entire ATM estate. Traffic from some ATMs is routed to one Postilion system, while other ATMs send transactions to the second Postilion system. This allows financial institutions to intelligently spread transaction loads across two systems based on operational requirements. The Postilion active/active approach has already proven to be extremely beneficial to large multi-lane retailers. By deploying the Postilion ATM Driving solution in an active/active environment, financial institutions now have the ultimate EFT high availability solution for their ATM networks.
"Previously, Postilion ensured ATM network availability with standard disaster recovery options. Enhanced with active/active capability, the Postilion ATM Driving solution now maximizes ATM uptime and minimizes back-office operational impact due to unplanned failures, thus providing improved operational efficiency, ROI, and a higher level of customer satisfaction," comments Eben Esterhuyse, Product Manager, Postilion.
Additionally, if deployed with the correct network infrastructure, an active/active Postilion ATM Driving system can function as a disaster recovery solution. During unplanned downtime due to failure at either site, whether the failure is a communications, network, server, or other data center disruption, both servers are capable of handling 100% of the transaction load, thus maintaining online transaction processing integrity. A further advantage of an active/active Postilion deployment is that planned downtime, including scheduled server maintenance such as software and database upgrades, can be performed at one site with no downtime at the other site. From a cardholder's perspective, banking service will not be interrupted.
About Postilion
Postilion, a division of S1 Corporation , is a leading provider of integrated solutions for self-service banking and payment processing. Ezenia! Inc. Adopts Shareholder Rights Plan
NASHUA, N.H., April 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ezenia, Inc (BULLETIN BOARD: EZEN) , announced today that its Board of Directors has adopted a Shareholder Rights Plan. Khoa D. Nguyen, Ezenia's President and Chief Executive Officer, stated; "The Board believes that a Shareholder Rights Plan enhances its ability to protect shareholder interests and to ensure that shareholders receive fair treatment in the event of a coercive takeover attempt. The Plan is intended to provide the Board with sufficient time to consider any and all alternatives to such an action. The Board believes that it is protecting the interests of all of its shareholders."
In connection with the adoption of the Shareholder Rights Plan, the Board of Directors declared a dividend distribution of one preferred stock purchase right for each outstanding share of Ezenia's common stock to shareholders of record as of the close of business on April 16, 2008. Initially, these rights will not be exercisable and will trade with the shares of Ezenia's common stock. Under the Shareholder Rights Plan, the rights generally will become exercisable if a person becomes an "acquiring person" by acquiring 15% or more of the common stock of Ezenia or if a person commences a tender offer that could result in that person owning 15% or more of the common stock of Ezenia. If a person becomes an "acquiring person," each holder of a right (other than the acquiring person) would be entitled to purchase, at the then-current exercise price, such number of shares of preferred stock which are equivalent to shares of Ezenia's common stock having a value of twice the exercise price of the right. If Ezenia is acquired in a merger or other business combination transaction after any such event, each holder of a right would then be entitled to purchase, at the then-current exercise price, shares of the acquiring company's common stock having a value of twice the exercise price of the right.

Victhom announces promising results on the proof of concept for its unique closed-loop neuromodulation system
QUEBEC CITY, April 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Victhom Human Bionics Inc.
About Victhom
Victhom discovers, develops and manufactures bionic devices involved in the treatment of a variety of physical and physiological dysfunctions. Victhom's Neurobionix business unit focuses on the development and commercialization of technologies and products involving implantable devices that feature neurosensing and neurostimulation components, integrated with artificial intelligence. Victhom's Biotronix business unit develops biomechatronic products to support or replace peripheral limbs in what is known as the orthotics and prosthetics market.

Raytheon Demonstrates Gallium Nitride Advantages in Radar Components
TEWKSBURY, Mass., April 16, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company is developing transmit-receive modules based on the advanced semiconductor gallium nitride (GaN) for use in future radar upgrades.
"This transmit-receive module demonstration and parallel reliability testing show that GaN will soon be ready to take over where increased power and advanced capabilities are needed," said Mark Russell, vice president of Engineering at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems (IDS).
The development is part of an on-going 42-month, $11.5 million Next Generation Transmit Receive Integrated Microwave Module (NGT) contract funded by the Missile Defense Agency's Advanced Technology Directorate. Raytheon is demonstrating that transmit-receive modules using GaN-powered monolithic microwave integrated circuit amplifiers have a significant performance advantage in that they provide significantly higher radio frequency power with greater efficiency than current modules.
The NGT program leverages GaN technology being developed under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Wide Bandgap Semiconductor program as well as company-funded efforts.
Russell said that GaN technology significantly extends the warfighter's reach into the battlespace by increasing radar ranges, sensitivity and search capabilities. Alternatively, the technology enables reduction in the size of the antenna, which improves transportability and reduces acquisition and lifecycle costs without sacrificing performance.
"The NGT program is important because it is the first significant government-funded contract to address the use of the more capable GaN semiconductors in a relevant environment," said Steve Bernstein, IDS' program manager on NGT. "This recent demonstration shows that GaN technology performs better in transmit-receive modules representative of those used in modern radars."
Integrated Defense Systems is Raytheon's leader in Joint Battlespace Integration providing affordable, integrated solutions to a broad international and domestic customer base, including the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, the U.S. Armed Forces and the Department of Homeland Security.
SALT LAKE CITY, April 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SKRM Interactive, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: SKMI; Frankfurt: '4SR') announced today that it is formally changing its name to Sector 10, Inc.
"We've been anticipating and preparing for this for a long time," said CEO Pericles DeAvila. "We believe the pending name change, which has been approved by a majority of our shareholders, will clarify and simplify our branding and marketing, and is consistent with our long-term strategy. We're looking forward to branding ourselves under the name Sector 10."
DeAvila also said that Sector 10 is making creative adjustments to its business model to better meet the marketplace for its products and services as it encounters fears of a recession and postponed purchase decisions. He cautioned that the shift in economic conditions and expectations will likely result in a significant setback on prior revenue projections.
"We continue to find great interest in our innovative approach to public safety, but we've found that we need to develop our products in a new way to help facilities cover the cost of deployment," DeAvila said while noting that the company's operating and financial results will be negatively affected by the performance of the U.S. economy generally.
Concentrating on showing quantifiable business value proposition in the deployment of its product, Sector 10 is developing a program whereby third- party investors may fund the placement of Sector 10 life safety products in public venues. The company plans to release details of this program at a later date.
DeAvila noted that the change in business model could have a substantial effect on projected revenues in the coming years. "We definitely see a change in the market during the past few months. As the economy generally has turned down we've had to adjust our strategies and projections."
Additional information about the name change is available in a definitive information statement filed by SKRM Interactive, Inc. with the Securities and Exchange Commission on March 13, 2008.

TI improves full-color video panel displays with 16-bit, 16-channel LED driverEnhanced spectrum PWM brightness control improves image quality and reduces flicker
DALLAS, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) introduced today a 16-channel, 50 mA constant-current sink LED driver, with an input voltage of up to 17 V. The TLC5943's integrated enhanced spectrum pulse-width modulation (PWM) improves image quality and reduces flicker noise in monochrome, multicolor and full-color LED displays, as well as LED signboards and display backlighting. See: http://www.ti.com/tlc5943-pr.
Each of the TLC5943's 16 channels has an individually adjustable 16-bit (65,536-step) grayscale PWM brightness control feature with an auto-data refresh and display repeat function. The channels are divided into four groups, and each group has an associated turn-on delay to maximize system voltage stability. All 16 channels can be adjusted with the device's 7-bit brightness control feature. A designer can use a single external resistor to set the maximum current value for all channels.
The device's brightness control feature, which can be accessed through a common 30-MHz interface, adjusts the average current levels to compensate for brightness variations that occur from one LED to the next.
The TLC5943 features two error information circuits. The device's LED open detection indicates a broken or disconnected LED at an output terminal. A thermal error flag indicates an over-temperature condition.
Key features of the TLC5943 include:

Illinois Police Department Comments About S-200 Purchase
TAMPA, Fla., April 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Stinger Systems, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: STIY) a leader in electro-stun technology today announced that the Henry, Illinois Police Department has purchased Stinger S-200 projectile stun devices.
Chief James Young stated, "After careful evaluations of the Stinger and the Taser, I determined that choosing the Stinger is an obvious and easy choice. I believe the Stinger S-200 offers officers an excellent alternative to other force options. I particularly liked what I believe is Stinger's superior dart spread, internal cartridge housing, and the one-handed quick eject button. For nearly half the price of the competition, I am getting a weapon that achieves a great level of immobilization while putting less current into the chest. As a Police Chief, I would encourage every law enforcement administrator to closely evaluate the Stinger and read through what appears a subversive effort to discredit Stinger by a focused bashing machine that has littered the Internet. Chief Young continued, "Further, I am particularly happy to see Stinger's stance on officer safety knowing that Stinger does not sell their weapons designed for law enforcement purposes to the civilian market. I know several small and large agencies looking at making purchases of the Stinger and I believe the Stinger is the future of stun weapons."

North Dakota Residents Encouraged to Donate Old Wireless Handsets and Accessories This Earth Day, April 22Donations Will Support Domestic Violence Organizations
BISMARCK, N.D., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2008, an estimated 130 million wireless phones will be retired from use, yet fewer than 20 percent of those phones will be recycled, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As Earth Day approaches, North Dakota residents with no-longer used wireless phones and accessories can donate them, in any condition, at any participating Verizon Wireless Communications Store in the state.
Through the company's award-winning HopeLine(R) program, Verizon Wireless collects wireless phones and accessories from any wireless service provider.
There are currently more than 256 million wireless phone subscribers in the United States alone, according to the wireless industry's trade association, and studies show that wireless phone users upgrade and replace their phones on average once every 18 months. Nationwide, a record 1.07 million wireless phones were donated to HopeLine in 2007, resulting in donations of more than $1.7 million in cash grants and more than 20,000 HopeLine phones with free wireless service to domestic violence agencies. During 2007, North Dakota residents contributed more than 3,100 no-longer-used wireless phones to the recycling program.
"We are proud to give consumers an easy means for recycling their no-longer-used wireless devices this Earth Day and throughout the year," said Nancy B. Clark, president -- Great Plains Region, Verizon Wireless. "If North Dakota residents make donations to Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program, we can help to reduce waste while also helping domestic violence survivors."
Since the October 2001 launch of Verizon Wireless' national recycling program, the company has collected more than 4.5 million phones. More than 1 million phones have been disposed of in an environmentally sound way with the remaining 3.5 million phones being refurbished for resale and reuse. Over the last six years, Verizon Wireless also has distributed nearly $5 million in cash grants and provided more than 60,000 phones with more than 160 million minutes of free wireless service to domestic violence programs throughout the country. In North Dakota, 11 organizations have received support from HopeLine in the past two years.
In addition to aiding organizations that support domestic violence prevention and awareness, recycling wireless phones also helps the environment. According to the EPA, recycling 100 million wireless phones would save enough energy to power more than 194,000 U.S. households with electricity for one year.
While Earth Day will be celebrated Tuesday, April 22, Verizon Wireless Communication Stores accept donations year-round. For more information on Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program or for instructions on donating wireless phones or accessories, visit http://www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.

Lockheed Martin-Built VINASAT-1 Satellite Ready to be Launched for Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group
NEWTOWN, Pa., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The VINASAT-1 communications satellite, designed and built by Lockheed Martin for Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) of Vietnam, is ready for launch on April 18 aboard an Ariane 5-ECA launch vehicle provided by Arianespace.
VINASAT-1 is based on Lockheed Martin's A2100A spacecraft platform and represents the first satellite system ever procured by the nation of Vietnam. VINASAT-1 features 12 operating Ku Band transponders providing coverage over Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and part of Myanmar. The spacecraft also features 8 C-Band primary transponders providing coverage over Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Southeast Asia, India, Japan and Australia. VINASAT-1 is designed for a minimum service life of 15 years and will be located at orbital slot 132 degrees east.
The turnkey satellite system is expected to improve telecommunications in Vietnam by transmitting radio, television and telephone communications to all corners of the country. The spacecraft will enable state-of-the-art communications, providing the Vietnamese people the opportunity to use multiple new services such as mobile broadcasting, direct-to-home television, video conferencing and data transmission. In addition, VINASAT-1 will improve the nation's communication networks infrastructure by removing dependence on ground networks and allowing 100% of Vietnam's rural communities to be equipped with telephones and televisions.
In addition to VNPT, Lockheed Martin has delivered 18 spacecraft to Asian customers, including eight A2100 satellites. The Lockheed Martin A2100 geosynchronous spacecraft series is designed to meet a wide variety of telecommunications needs including Ka-band broadband and broadcast services, fixed satellite services in C-band and Ku-band, high-power direct broadcast services using the Ku-band frequency spectrum and mobile satellite services using UHF, L-band, and S-band payloads. The A2100's modular design features a reduction in parts, simplified construction, increased on-orbit reliability and reduced weight and cost.
The A2100 spacecraft's design accommodates a large range of communication payloads. This design modularity also enables the A2100 spacecraft to be configured for missions other than communication. The A2100 design is currently being adapted for geostationary earth orbit (GEO)-based earth observing missions and is currently the baselined platform for Lockheed Martin's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite Series-R (GOES-R) proposal. The A2100 also serves as the platform for critical government communications programs including Advanced Extremely High Frequency and Mobile User Objective System and is the foundation for Lockheed Martin's Transformational Satellite Communications System (TSAT) offering for the U.S. Government.
About VNPT Group
VNPT Group (http://www.vnpt.com.vn/) of Vietnam is tasked with the exploration, consultation, design, installation and maintenance of telecommunications and information technology for the nation of Vietnam. VNPT has organized multiple major business ventures in primarily the posts, information technology and telecommunications sectors. By mobilizing all economic segments of the nation of Vietnam, VNPT will modernize the nation's technological infrastructure by implementing high-speed, high-capacity and high-quality telecommunications systems.

Letter to Z Trim Shareholders
MUNDELIEN, Ill., April 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/
To: Z Trim Shareholders
RE: Investor Update: Q1/08
Dear Fellow Shareholders:
In keeping with our pledge to increase transparency and improve the effectiveness of communication with our investor community, we are initiating a series of periodic updates to help keep you informed about our Company's progress. The Board, management and staff of Z Trim Holdings, Inc. (Z Trim) deeply appreciate your ongoing faith and support and want you to know that we are working hard to rebuild this enterprise for sustainable, long term growth.
I use the term "rebuild" to convey the reality of our present undertaking. While the leadership team believes implicitly in the extraordinary potential of this Company, both to deliver strong returns to our shareholders and to improve the health and welfare of millions of consumers, the fact remains that significant work will be necessary in order to realize it. With this in mind, I will spend a little extra space in this inaugural communication to address some challenges that we have overcome and some that we are still working on. Future editions will follow a more traditional format of concise updates on key topics with less introductory commentary.
We take great pride in the progress we have made since our annual shareholder meeting in December 2007, including:
-- Resolution of Amex Deficiency Status -- We stated that priority number
one was to resolve Z Trim's regulatory compliance status with the
American Stock Exchange and in February, were pleased to announce that
Amex had found the Company to be fully compliant with all listing
standards, thereby eliminating a significant impediment to funding and
thus future growth. This was no mean accomplishment given the breadth
of compliance deficiencies with which we were faced. A number of
procedural and internal control improvements are now in place to ensure
that this experience will not be repeated.
-- Enhanced Fiscal Responsibility -- We promised to get more "bang for the
buck" from our shareholders' investment and while this will remain an
ongoing goal and obligation, we have already made significant progress
toward reducing our cost of operations without sacrificing quality or
capacity. We have taken a hard look at every aspect of our operation
and implemented a number of changes designed to reduce waste and
increase efficiency. Specific examples include identifying less
expensive raw materials, changing utility providers, and strategically
reducing our workforce.
-- Plant Optimization -- We committed to find ways to improve our capacity
while lowering our costs and are well on our way to achieving this
critical objective. Dr. Shukla is confident that by utilizing improved
drying technology, we will be able to substantially increase our pilot
plant capacity while simultaneously driving down unit production costs.
We have already begun the process of re-designing the plant to meet
these objectives, with the goal of completing plant modifications by
the third quarter of this year.
-- Capital -- We just filed our 2007 annual report, and although our
financial performance has materially improved, many hurdles must be
surmounted before we achieve success. Principle among these is the
need to raise the money required to fund plant improvements, strengthen
our sales capabilities and sustain our operations until we reach
profitability. Our Board has been devoting extraordinary time and
effort to that task, and we are confident that we will be able to
capitalize our business plan.
-- Strategic Planning -- We have made a series of evolutionary changes to
prepare for a steepening sales cycle in the months ahead. We are in
the process of hiring a new sales manager, with years of specific
industry experience, to work with our existing management team. We
have created a number of internal committees that meet regularly to
ensure that every aspect of our organization is on the same page with
respect to production, financing, marketing and money management
issues. No material expenditures will be made without thoroughly
considering all alternatives and reaching consensus on the best one.
Sales and Marketing Update
I often receive calls from shareholders requesting information about the business. My usual response is either that I am prohibited from providing non-public information, or bound by non-disclosure agreements regarding the status of present and prospective business relationships. These are frustrating but unavoidable facts of small public company life and while I would like nothing better than to share detailed information about the many exciting opportunities we are pursuing, I simply cannot do so. I will, however, take this opportunity to share some heretofore non-public information.
In August of 2007 we revitalized our marketing strategy and began cultivating relationships with innovative people who are well-positioned within the industry to exert influence over the purchasing decisions of major food companies. For example, we strengthened our relationship with Chef Eric Carre of Amazing Food Creations, who is a founding member of the Research Chefs' Association and an industry leader in the development of innovative foods. Eric has become a champion of Z Trim, using our ingredients in many of the finished goods he prepares for major food manufacturers.
We also began executing a strategy of presenting finished food solutions to large food manufacturing companies. Instead of merely boasting about how well our products work, we are showing them tangible examples. Our creative R & D team has been developing our own finished formulations to demonstrate Z Trim's amazing array of functional attributes, as well as how great the final products taste. Building on that strategy, we have brought some finished goods directly to the marketplace and we continue to tout the benefits of our products to the food service sector, particularly the schools. A limited release of our salad dressings and mayonnaise has been tremendously well-received, and more importantly, has helped us attract the attention of the major food companies that dominate the retail and food service spaces.
While these experiences bode well, it is important to understand the nature of the food industry sales cycle to appreciate our success so far in penetrating the functional food ingredient market. The sale of even modest amounts of product to giant food companies involves successfully navigating a time and labor intensive obstacle course. Some of the obstacles include convincing decision-makers of the value our unique products bring, providing technical assistance during extensive internal testing, and supporting market research to evaluate consumer preferences and demand.
This ponderous decision-making process has historically taken from several months to several years, but since the advent of the marketing strategy described above, a number of major companies have started working with our products at a much more accelerated pace. Several of these engagements have already resulted in sales. Stated another way, we have crossed the line from merely sending out samples for testing to actually selling product to companies for use in finished goods. We see this as a promising indication that this new approach will help us to move large prospective clients more rapidly from initial concept through development and testing to finished product launch.
R & D Update
One of the most exciting and significant recent events is our development of a new line of food ingredient products that provide additional functionality and value-added propositions to the food industry. Under the direction of renowned food scientist Dr. Triveni Shukla, our R & D team has developed a new product stream similar in function to certain gum products. Remarkably, this derives from an improvement to the Z Trim manufacturing process and is therefore a cost effective means of producing incremental revenue from the same incoming raw materials. In fact, this innovation will enable our plant to nearly triple production capacity of saleable products while driving down the unit cost of goods sold.
We continue to explore additional capabilities and markets for these products, both individually and in combination with Z Trim in the form of customized blends and emulsions. We have already received high-level interest in this new product.
The Road Ahead
A number of exciting initiatives are underway and should bear fruit within the coming months. These include:
-- Attending the Product Innovation Exchange event in Park City, Utah,
during April to meet directly with decision-makers from several multi-
national food companies who have expressed a high level of interest in
using our ingredient solutions in their finished goods.
-- Continuing to work towards a joint venture agreement with the Brazilian
company, Kraki, an industry ingredient leader in South America.
-- Hiring a new VP of Sales.
We are excited about our future and remain dedicated to building a successful and sustainable business. We continue to improve our technology and diversify our customer base with the goal of ubiquity in the food industry. Over the last several months we have taken bold steps toward achieving that goal, and also toward assuring you, our shareholders, of our absolute commitment to effective corporate governance and regulatory compliance.
We continue to develop and refine our unique technology to create a broad range of diverse products that will deliver value to our customers and thereby our shareholders. We hope you will stay tuned as we bring you future updates about our successes. Thanks again for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Steven Cohen
