Hoya Announces Fourth Quarter and FY2007 Financial Results
TOKYO, Japan, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- HOYA Corporation today announced fourth quarter net sales of
135.8 billion yen for the period ended March 31, 2008, a 36.5% increase over
the same quarter of the prior year. Operating income for the quarter was 18.0
billion yen, a 26.8% decrease compared with 24.6 billion yen in the prior
year period. Net income for the fourth quarter was 16.3 billion yen and
earnings per share were 37.71 yen. For the same quarter of the previous year,
net income was 19.0 billion yen and earnings per share were 44.11 yen.
For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2008, the company
announced net sales of 481.6 billion yen, an 23.5% increase over the prior
year. Operating income for the fiscal year was 95.0 billion yen, or 11.3%
decrease over the prior year period. Net income for the fiscal year was 77.0
billion yen and earnings per share were 178.18 yen. For the previous fiscal
year, net income and earnings per share were 83.3 billion yen and 193.50 yen.
"The result of Fiscal year 2007 fell below our expectations,
largely due to the price drop of digital camera that affected our optics
business," said Hiroshi Suzuki, chief executive officer of HOYA. "The
beginning of the new fiscal year looks better than the same period last year.
We are planning a proactive capital investment in FY2008 in order to meet the
market demand. "
Business Highlights for the Fourth Quarter
Revenue growth for the quarter was driven by merger with
Pentax, however, the operating income decreased by 26.8%. Electro-Optics
revenue decreased by 6.4% largely due to seasonal decline of demand and
negative effect on foreign exchange rate. Vision Care revenue decreased by
6.5% due to the tough competition with low-price lenses. Healthcare sector
delivered 10.0% revenue growth for the quarter resulting from successful
consulting sales effort and expanding sales of value-added products.
Starting this quarter, the sales of three Pentax business
units are consolidated. Life Care net sales increased year-on-year basis
driven by strong sales of new endoscopic system. Imaging System net sales
decreased year-on-year basis due to the sales decline of compact type digital
camera. Optical Component net sales increased year-on-year basis resulting
from steady performance of value-added digital camera module.
Business Highlights for the Full Year
Electro-optics net sales were 209.8 billion yen, an 4.3%
decrease over the prior year. Vision Care net sales were 126.3 billion yen,
5.5% up over the prior year. Health Care net sales were 46.1 billion yen,
13.0% up over the prior year. The net sales of 89.0 billion yen from newly
consolidated Pentax businesses and its subsidiaries for the six months from
October 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008 have been combined to the full year
results.
HOYA also announced year-end dividends forecast of 35 yen per
share of common stock. The annual dividend, including the interim dividends
of 30 yen per share, will amount to 65 yen per share. It will be decided at
the board of directors meeting in the end of May.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- BMW of North America and its advertising agency GSD&M Idea City are rolling out a 3-D virtual vehicle tour to herald the arrival of the first-ever BMW X6. Going direct to target consumers with a hologram of the vehicle, the world's first sports activity coupe will be featured in prominent buildings in New York City's financial district over a four-week period.
Employing patented technology from Dutch advertising company viZoo, the 2008 BMW X6 will be projected in three dimensions, appearing as a hologram, inside a ten-foot square, BMW-branded enclosure. Inside the light-controlled space, an animation suggesting the vehicle's unique combination of coupe agility and sports activity vehicle versatility runs on a loop.

"Since these prospective buyers rarely have time to visit a dealer showroom, our virtual tour allows them to experience the performance, agility and utility of the X6 by bringing the showroom to them."
An interactive touch-screen inside the enclosure will allow people to manipulate the vehicle hologram to view different angles, experience the interior, explore the vehicle features, and get a sense of the generous cargo space.

Additionally, BMW is the first automotive company to sponsor a taping of CNBC-TV's "Power Lunch," on location recently at The Four Seasons Restaurant in New York City, where real-life power lunches take place everyday. On the West Coast, a media partnership with Variety will introduce the BMW X6 to target consumers in the entertainment industry as part of the latest installment of the "10 to Watch" series, "10 Innovators to Watch," in both print and online editions dated May 5th. Microsoft Research Supports Exploration Into Energy-Efficient ComputingCompany's environmental research efforts deepen with new 'power aware' program.
REDMOND, Wash., April 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- As part of its Sustainable Computing Program, Microsoft Corp. today announced it will support four academic research projects focused on energy efficiency in computing in the areas of datacenter power efficiency, power management and the creation of parallel computing architecture with decreased power demands.

Through this program, Microsoft Research is stimulating research across a broad range of areas with the potential to significantly improve energy efficiency. And considering that a single 100-watt incandescent light bulb left on around the clock for a year costs more than $80 to power and releases 1,350 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere -- roughly the same amount of power that an idle PC uses in that same timeframe -- finding ways to lessen humankind's impact on the environment is critical.
"We want to open new avenues of research and raise the awareness of power as a critical resource that needs to be managed," said Sailesh Chutani, senior director of Microsoft External Research. "Through this program, we are encouraging novel thinking about how to reduce that power consumption and how to make technology more environmentally friendly into the future."
The Sustainable Computing Program explores two main areas of research that can have a major impact. The first is the principle of "pay for play," which is the idea that the power consumed by a computing device should be proportional to the demand placed upon it, lowering the amount of energy consumed at low load and idle. Secondly, energy efficiency, even at peak loads, is equally important in reducing the overall consumption of electricity and should be managed as a first-class resource. The program encourages researchers to use novel approaches in hardware design, software, networking, benchmarking, analysis, virtualization and any other avenue that might provide improvements in the field.
Under the program, a total of $500,000 will be awarded among the four winners. A summary of the winners and descriptions of their projects follows:

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Chelsio Communications, Inc., the leading provider of 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) adapters and ASIC solutions, today announced new software drivers that are fully integrated within the newly released XenServer 4.1 from Citrix Systems Inc. . The 'in-box' drivers provide seamless deployment of Chelsio 10GbE Unified Wire adapters with Citrix XenServer 4.1, enabling the industry's best I/O performance for single or multiple Windows and Linux virtual machines (VM) while delivering on the promise of the unified wire.
The Chelsio adapters are based on Chelsio's 3rd generation T3 ASIC, which delivers the highest bandwidth and lowest latency in the industry. The drivers for XenServer 4.1 have gone through a rigorous qualification process by both Citrix and Chelsio for the Citrix release of XenServer 4.1, which insures seamless installation. Chelsio is an official Citrix Ready partner.

As part of the qualification process, Chelsio is included in the Citrix hardware compatibility list.
