VIDEO: CarMax Offers Tips to Spot Hidden Vehicle DamageCarmax.com "Quick Poll" Finds Consumers Often Misidentify Damage Indicators

RICHMOND, Va., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Most consumers do not know the biggest warning signs indicating a vehicle may have been in a major accident, according to a poll conducted by CarMax, Inc., the nation's largest retailer of used cars.

To view the Multimedia News Release, go to: http://www.prnewswire.com/mnr/carmax/30793/

More than 70 percent of respondents said that repainting the car is the strongest indicator of vehicle damage. According to CarMax's knowledgeable car-buying professionals, however, clamp marks on a vehicle's frame are the biggest sign that the car may have been involved in a serious collision.

"A car might be repainted to address cosmetic issues rather than a serious accident," said David Claeys, purchasing manager for CarMax in Richmond, Virginia. "Paint work isn't as big of an indicator as clamp marks on the frame of the vehicle. People should be sure to do their research and look beyond a paint job when buying a used car and consider several other factors in order to spot hidden signs of prior vehicle damage."

The following are the results of a carmax.com "Quick Poll" where 4,837 carmax.com visitors were asked to identify the strongest indicator that a car has suffered serious vehicle damage.

Indicator Percent of responses Repainting 72% Clamp marks 18% Bumps and dents 8% Scratches 2%

"Used car shoppers need to be on the look out for signs a car may have been in a bad accident, as the safety and resale value of the car may have been compromised," said Claeys. "Cars that have had severe structural damage can be completely repaired, retitled, and sold to an unsuspecting buyer. Minor fender benders often do not compromise the integrity of the vehicle and are not as much of a concern."

CarMax's car buying team recommends the following tips to help determine whether a used car may have been in a serious accident.

-- Look for clamp marks on the frame rail under the car. Clamp marks look like holes or gashes on the frame of the vehicle. Clamp marks usually indicate that the car has been on a frame machine, which suggests the vehicle may have been in a serious accident. -- Check the bolts used to fasten fenders, doors and the trunk lid to see whether the paint is broken or bolts are turned, which could indicate the bolts were removed for body repairs to the vehicle. -- Peel back the fabric that lines the trunk and look for welding marks or body filler, which may indicate that repairs were made on the body of the vehicle. -- Look for signs of repainting on the car, such as inconsistency in the paintwork or paint on the molding or gaskets. Run your finger along the inside of the door edge and see if the finish is smooth or rough. A rough finish can be caused by overspray during repainting. If signs of repainting are found, ask additional questions to determine if the paintwork was for minor scratches and dents or to cover up more serious vehicle damage. -- Listen for any engine noise when you test drive the vehicle. A major accident can cause damage to any part of the engine. Ask questions about any noise that sounds unusual. -- Check to see if all the doors, the hood, and trunk lid close properly. If they don't, this could indicate the use of replacement parts due to a major accident. -- Check to see if the odometer changes miles as the vehicle is driven. -- Check the vehicle identification number, or VIN, on the dashboard and see if it matches the VIN on the sticker inside the door of the vehicle. If the numbers do not match, the door may have been replaced. -- Review reports from AutoCheck, offered free of charge for all cars in the CarMax inventory on carmax.com, or Carfax with the VIN to determine if there are any reports of the vehicle as stolen, declared a lemon, or previously involved in a serious collision.

CarMax's nationwide team of approximately 1,000 car-buying professionals has appraised more than 9 million cars. These buyers are trained to detect possible signs of vehicle damage and whether a car has been in a major accident. CarMax will not retail any used car that has frame or flood damage or an inaccurate mileage count on the odometer. On carmax.com, you can read about our Clean Title guarantee.

CarMax will buy any car, whether or not the seller purchases a CarMax vehicle. Cars not meeting CarMax's stringent mechanical, electrical and safety standards are sold to dealers at in-store wholesale auctions. More than half of the cars the company retails are purchased directly from consumers.

Online shoppers can use the CarMax website to search the company's inventory of more than 25,000 new and used cars. The website showcases each vehicle with multiple photos, the no-haggle price, and information on features, options, fuel economy and customer reviews. Visits to carmax.com continue to increase and approximately 70 percent of in-store customers visited the website before coming to the store.

    About CarMax

CarMax, a FORTUNE 500 company, and one of the FORTUNE 2008 "100 Best Companies to Work For," is the nation's largest retailer of used cars. Headquartered in Richmond, Va., CarMax currently operates 93 used car superstores in 42 markets. EMC Announces Expanded OEM Portfolio for Software DevelopersDevelopers Rapidly Engineer Rich Content, Capture and Create XML Applications Based on the EMC Documentum Content Management Platform

HOPKINTON, Mass., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- EMC Corporation , the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced the expansion of its OEM Content Management, Capture and XML Data Management software product portfolio. These offerings allow developers to include sophisticated capture, rich content management capabilities and information rights management in their software products. EMC's commitment to the developer community means independent software vendors can deliver more complete solutions to their customers, enabling the rapid delivery of new products to new markets, growing top and bottom lines.

With today's announcement, EMC further positions itself as a complete source of enterprise content management (ECM) solutions designed specifically for independent software providers wanting to rapidly and cost effectively embed first-in-class functionality in their applications. EMC's broad range of content management products available to developers now include: enterprise-strength document management, business process management, records management, information rights management, XML data management, and a host of document capture solutions.

The most recent addition to the EMC OEM family is the EMC Documentum XML Store OEM Edition for XML data management -- designed to manage technical information, publish complex documentation, and share data anywhere. XML Store OEM Edition is the fastest and most scalable XML database powered by open standards and is suited for data intensive industries such as aerospace, manufacturing, publishing, and the public sector.

"At DocZone.com, we offer hosted XML content management services that help our customers reduce the costs of creating, translating, and publishing technical publications and online help. We wanted to be first-to-market with a SaaS solution that leverages best-of-breed XML database technology," said Dan Dube, Managing Director, DocZone.com. "We selected EMC Documentum XML Store OEM Edition for its adherence to open standards, strong support for multilingual content, and high performance. EMC's XML technologies for OEM offer us the most scalable performance of all XML content management systems we evaluated. Our customers depend on our hosted DocZone XML content management service. Leveraging EMC's technology makes good business sense."

EMC's Information Rights Management software development kit (SDK) is targeted towards software developers, Web 2.0 applications, software as a service (SaaS) environments and product equipment companies offering developers a means to include information control and security to ensure that sensitive information remains secure as it is shared both internally and externally. These industry leading solutions are optimized for developers to easily plug into their applications and enables independent software vendors to keep up with the increasing demands of customers.

"Our Evidence Management solutions with EMC Information Rights Management provide the best protection developed for our customers to date, and furthers our ability to drive down corporate risk and costs in ways no other eDiscovery provider can," said Tom Thimot, President and CEO of CaseCentral. "CaseCentral provides an on-demand Evidence Management platform to corporations and law firms. With EMC's IRM technology embedded into our software, we are able to offer our customers the ability to control, secure, and track their evidence -- something that differentiates us from our competitors."

EMC's Core Offerings for OEMs-Capture, Store, Secure, and Archive

EMC's OEM offerings are anchored by the EMC Documentum Content Server OEM Edition, the world's first embeddable ECM platform for independent software vendors. Using Content Server OEM Edition as an embedded repository and content platform significantly lowers the research and development expenses related to building an application that involves unstructured data assets ranging from documents, images, audio, and video to reports and messages. Content Server OEM Edition offers the same unified architecture, programming interfaces and functionality as the EMC Documentum Enterprise Content Management (ECM) platform on which customers have come to rely.

Another core member of the OEM family is EMC Documentum ApplicationXtender document management software, which electronically stores, organizes, and manages virtually any kind of business content. Based on an easy-to-use Microsoft Windows/.NET-optimized system, ApplicationXtender integrates document imaging, viewing and annotation, report management, workflow, and document management services. ApplicationXtender is easy to implement, integrate, and manage, providing instant, role-based access to content from either a desktop interface or web browser, and its quick deployment makes it ideal for midsized organizations and enterprise departments.

To capture-enable their applications, developers can choose from the EMC Captiva family of paper scanning products. Captiva's leading document capture and intelligent document recognition solutions automatically feed an organization's information system faster, more cost-effectively and with greater accuracy than traditional data entry and manual filing alone-and software vendors can provide a more rapid return on investment and greater compliance control than ECM applications without a capture function. Both EMC Captiva PixTools ISIS SDKs and Dispatcher API provide developers with the ability to quickly build or integrate sophisticated document capture capabilities into their applications.

"CCH, a Wolters Kluwer business (CCHGroup.com), is a leading provider of tax, accounting and audit information, software and services. We've incorporated world-class capture technology from EMC Captiva software into our ProSystem fx Scan, resulting in a complete solution for firms looking to save time and money by automating the conversion of paper documents into business-critical data and digitized images," said Stuart Gill, CCH Product Manager. "Working with EMC has proven to be beneficial to our product offerings as well as our customer reach."

To complement the product offerings for the OEM developer market, partners can also leverage a wide range of best-in-class programs for building applications and solutions integrated with the Documentum platform through the EMC Velocity2 Technology and ISV Program. Benefits encompass technical support, access to training, application interoperability testing and certification, as well as marketing and business development support.

For more information on these programs, call or e-mail: 800/607-9546 or EMC_OEM_Inside_Sales@emc.com.

TI launches integrated hot swap power management controller for next-generation wireless, computing and communications systemsDual-slot hot swap manager controls 3.3-V and 12-V channels for two Advanced Mezzanine Cards

DALLAS, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) introduced the industry's first single-chip, dual-slot hot swap manager for Advanced Mezzanine Cards (AdvancedMC(TM)) used in wireless, telecom and computing systems, including custom, AdvancedTCA (ATCA) and MicroTCA systems. The device significantly improves the flexibility and performance of hot swap power management design in applications ranging from 3G/Beyond 3G wireless base stations and network equipment to high-end data communications. See: http://www.ti.com/tps2359-pr.

TI's I2C-programmable TPS2359 hot swap controller performs all necessary power interface functions for two AdvancedMCs, while requiring the fewest possible external components. The controller eliminates up to 75 percent of the components required in competing solutions. Enabling seamless "plug-and-play" insertion and removal of AdvancedMCs during system operation, the device's two fully integrated 3.3-V channels provide inrush control, over-current protection and FET ORing control functionality. In addition, two 12-V channels provide the same functions using external FETs and sense resistors. The controller's 3.3-V current limits are set at the factory to AdvancedMC-compliant levels and the 12-V current limits can be programmed using external resistors.

The TPS2359's integrated ORing control capability simplifies power design for MicroTCA power modules or other implementations that manage redundant power in the AdvancedMC slot. When used with a low Rdson N-channel MOSFET, the controller seamlessly manages power distribution, while protecting the system from potentially dangerous reverse-current or transient events by providing an extremely fast turn-off response of 130 nanoseconds.

    Digital configuration and monitoring

The highly flexible controller's I2C interface allows a designer to digitally configure and monitor the AdvancedMC hot swap solution over a two-wire bus -- and with fewer required external components and pins. This interface programs current limit, fast-trip threshold and fault time. The TPS2359 also features enable or disable of the ORing, multi-channel cross-connect and auto-retry.

For digital power supply systems, this allows designers to better manage the system's overall performance. For example, a hot swap solution with the TPS2359 can alert the system of any over-current, fast-trip and current-limit situation. For designers who do not want to use a digital interface, TI offers the TPS2358 controller with dedicated output pins and configuration capability using external components.

Building momentum for ATCA and MicroTCA

In 2002, the PCI Industrial Computing Manufacturers Group (PICMG) released the industry-wide ATCA as an open standard, which addresses the growth and changes in the communications infrastructure market. MicroTCA was developed as a follow-on standard, further extending the ATCA open platform into applications requiring scalability and redundancy in distributed environments.

"Internet capacity and the growth of wireless networks continue to place pressure on equipment makers and designers to adopt the ATCA or MicroTCA standards," said Jim Bird, TI systems engineer, and board member of the ATCA and MicroTCA standards committees. "The TPS2359 and TPS2358 are the only multiple-voltage output hot swap controllers compliant to ATCA and MicroTCA. This achievement will only increase TI's ability to solve key power design challenges and open the door to allow more rapid adoption."

High-performance analog and communications infrastructure solutions

TI offers innovation and support to meet the energy management design needs of wireless, telecom, computing and industrial manufacturers. In addition to power management, TI provides the industry's broadest communications infrastructure product portfolio, including digital up/down converters, high-speed data converters, RF products, timing, backplane interface, standard logic components and high-performance single and multi-core DSP solutions. TI's new Communications Infrastructure Guide is at http://www.ti.com/communicationsinfrastructure.

    Pricing and Availability

The TPS2359 and TPS2358 are available today in volume from TI and its authorized distributors. The TPS2359 comes in a space-saving 36-pin, PQFN package with a suggested resale price of $5.00 in 1,000-piece quantities. The TPS2358 is available in a 48-pin QFN with a suggested resale price of $4.00 in 1,000-piece quantities. Evaluation modules of the TPS2358/9, design application notes and new Power Management Guide are available for download at power.ti.com.

Woodhaul Police Department to Purchase Stinger S-200's

TAMPA, Fla., April 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ Stinger Systems, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: STIY) a leader in electro-stun technology announced today that the Woodhaul, Illinois Police Department has purchased Stinger S-200 Electronic Immobilization Devices.

Chief Darren Jaros commented, "I had an opportunity to evaluate a Stinger S-200 from a neighboring agency whom is carrying them. After experiencing the effects of the Stinger S-200 and closely evaluating the Taser brand X-26, I easily came to the conclusion that not only was the Stinger far superior to the Taser, I like the fact that Stinger exclusively sells to the law enforcement community at a more affordable cost. I researched all the information out on the Internet and concluded that there is no current information or studies that reflect negatively on the new Stinger S-200 that I am purchasing.

After I took a hit with the Stinger, there is no way I believe any of the conclusions that were reached by some so called independent tests and found those tests to be an unfair and bias study that has nothing to do with the new Stinger S-200's.

Additionally, I think it is important to note that because our agency is small, we do not have the funds necessary to simply purchase trendy products without really knowing what we are getting. We needed to truly research and decide what the best value is for our department. I know quite a few agencies around who are excited about the next generation EID technology in the Stingers."

Aquantia Demonstrates Robust Performance of Industry's First Low-Power 10GBASE-T PHY at Interop Las VegasAQ1001 PHY interoperates with industry-leading network testers from Ixia and Spirent

MILPITAS, Calif., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Aquantia, the leading developer of mainstream 10GBASE-T solutions, will demonstrate its AQ1000 family of PHYs at Interop Las Vegas on April 29 through May 1 in a multi-vendor configuration featuring the leaders in the network test industry. Aquantia's AQ1001 is the first low-power monolithic 10GBASE-T PHY designed for mainstream applications such as dual-port NICs or high-density switches. The demonstration at Interop will feature the AQ1001 operating over 100m of Category 6A UTP cabling, with network test provided by the Ixia 10GBASE-T Ethernet LAN Services Load Module and the Spirent TestCenter's High Density 2-port 10GBASE-T Personality Module (GBT-4100A).

The configuration chosen for Aquantia's suite at Interop achieves a number of milestones. OEMs considering 10GBASE-T have been demanding the low power and manufacturability of the AQ1001, which is demonstrated both on 100m of CAT6A cable, as well as with the shorter channels common within the Data Center. OEMs also demand robust performance and vendor interoperability. Aquantia's suite will host the industry's first demonstration of the robust nature of the IEEE standard 802.3an-2006(TM) with operation among three vendors.

"Interoperability demonstration of the AQ1000 family of PHYs with Ixia and Spirent, the two leaders in network test, marks a critical milestone in the validation of our low-power 10GBASE-T solution in the marketplace," said Phil Delansay, president and CEO of Aquantia. "Our suite at Interop not only showcases the capability of our devices to enable mainstream platforms, but also shows the ability of 10GBASE-T and the familiar RJ45 to assume their place as the leading interconnect for 10-Gigabit Ethernet applications."

Aquantia's AQ1000 family of 10GBASE-T PHYs features low power in a compact 21mm BGA package. These are monolithic designs implemented in the mature 90nm CMOS process. The innovative architecture delivers the low power of 5.5W for a maximum distance of 100m of Category 6A cable. This low power enables 10GBASE-T within mainstream applications such as dual-port NICs, 16-port line cards, and 24-port aggregation switches. This is the first low-power monolithic 10GBASE-T PHY to be sampled into the marketplace. The AQ1001 is sampling now.

"As the market leader in 1 GbE and 10 GbE Ethernet testing solutions (according to Frost & Sullivan), we are proud to claim Aquantia as an early adopter of Ixia's 10GBASE-T Ethernet Adapter," said Anupam Sahai, vice president of Marketing, Ixia. SGI Technology Powers University of Hawaii's Papaya Genome Sequencing ProjectSGI Altix and InfiniteStorage Systems, and PipelineFX Qube!, Deliver the Processing Power and Speed to Map the First Fruit Genome Ever Sequenced

BOSTON, April 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BIO-IT WORLD CONFERENCE AND EXPO 2008, Booth #306/308 -- An International Papaya Genome Consortium led by University of Hawaii (UH) researchers has completed the Papaya Genome Sequencing Project and, from the start, researchers relied on technology from SGI to provide the processing power and speed required to run the assemblies. The papaya genome was sequenced using a whole genome shotgun approach running on the combination of an SGI(R) Altix(R) system, SGI(R) InfiniteStorage and Qube! scheduling software from PipelineFX(R). It has taken two years to construct the physical map and to sequence the 372 million base pairs. The disease-resistant "SunUp" papaya is now the first fruit -- and the first transgenic crop -- to be sequenced, helping to pave the way for international export of genetically modified fruits and vegetables.

"Sequencing the papaya genome is the first large scale genome project done in Hawaii with international collaboration from 22 research institutes and will benefit the papaya research community, papaya farmers, and consumers for years to come," said Maqsudul Alam, Director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Genomics, Proteomics, and Bioinformatics, College of Natural Sciences, lead institute of the International Papaya Genome Consortium. "We chose the SGI Altix because of the configuration of the memory system, how quickly we can use the random memory, and also the scalability of the system, and of course, the price/performance. SGI technology has been instrumental in achieving this technological and scientific milestone."

The second largest crop in Hawaii, papaya was almost wiped out by the papaya ringspot virus a decade ago. Genetically modifying the papaya to create a ringspot-resistant transgenic or "hermaphrodite" variety such as the SunUp saved the papaya from extinction on the islands. The Papaya Genome Project mapped papaya genes to improve the efficiency of agricultural cultivation, and to discover new applications for one of the most important edible fruit crops of tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Papaya is also used in a wide range of medical, biotechnological and cosmetic applications that can be further developed now that a complete picture of the genomic sequence has been drawn.

When the project began over two years ago, Dr. Alam, who heads the multi-institution project housed at the UH Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC) at University of Hawaii, looked for the fastest, and largest computer their budget would allow, one able to run for weeks without stopping during the 2-year-plus project. He also looked for a scalable backend-distributed processing solution with open API's to develop Web-based interfaces, which allowed the development of custom processes, such as pre-loading standard databases into memory for faster searches. Another major consideration was the Project was going to generate a tremendous amount of data: a typical papaya base pairs assembly run can use as much as 40GB of memory and 150GB of disk space. Future plans of processing even larger genome sequencing projects will also require very large, highly scalable disk storage.

The SGI Altix system, with 32 CPUs of processing power, gave the team high throughput to their computing needs, allowing them to run highly multi-threaded applications concurrently. PipelineFX Qube!, used widely in digital media for game build engines and animation rendering, was uniquely set up as the Center's backend software environment. PipelineFX Qube!, which handles distribution tasks, also managed the interactive Web site, Gbrowse, for national and international collaborators on the project.

The University of Hawaii used an SGI(R) Altix(R) 350 computer system, SGI(R) InfiniteStorage TP9300 Fibre Channel storage, which has been upgraded over the course of the project to over 16TB, and PipelineFX(TM) Qube!(TM) render management and batch-queuing software for the Project. The complete system, purchased over two years ago, was integrated and sold through SGI Channel Partner CORESystems Hawaii.

"Because the SGI system architecture allows very large memory to be shared across all the processors, the Center personnel were able to write their own software that, every night, downloaded all the versions of the genomic databases, and the most common were uploaded into the Altix system's shared memory for immediate access," said Deepak Thakkar, Higher Education and Research Solutions Manager, SGI. "SGI Altix systems and scalable storage solutions, with PipelineFX Qube!, made a unique genome analysis tool that got the job done. This is an exciting combination that has many other applications in biosciences."

The Hawaii Papaya Genome Project is a multi-institutional bioinformatics project. In Hawaii, participants include MHPCC, Hawaii Agricultural Research Center (HARC), Hawaii Papaya Industry Association, USDA Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center, Pacific Telehealth and Technology Hui, and Hawaii Biotech. Nankai University in China is a major collaborator, as is University of Illinois and Maryland Biotechnology Institute.

California Micro Devices Introduces XtremeESD(TM) Protection Device with 20kV ESD Protection

    MILPITAS, California, April 28 /PRNewswire/ --

    - Industry's Only ESD Solution that passes both HDMI(TM) 1.3a Compliance and 20kV ESD Tests

California Micro Devices (Nasdaq: CAMD) today introduced the latest ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection device in the XtremeESD family utilizing the PicoGuard XS(TM) architecture, the CM1234. It features 8 channels of ESD protection that meet + -15kV contact discharge, and + -20kV air discharge per the IEC61000-4-2 standard, while meeting 100 Ohm differential impedance matching requirements of the HDMI(TM) 1.3a and DisplayPort(TM) digital video standards. It is ideal for digital TVs, LCD displays, notebook computers, set top boxes, and HD DVD recorders.

    (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080428/AQM036)

"Consumer electronics manufacturers often test to standards greater than 8kV, particularly on ports easily accessed by consumers such as side and front mounted digital video ports", stated Joe Salvador, director of marketing for computing and digital consumer products. "Until now, there were no ESD protection devices that could meet these higher levels of protection and still maintain signal integrity at HDMI(TM) 1.3a data rates."

    Picoguard XS Impedance Matching

The CM1234 incorporates the recently introduced PicoGuard XS architecture that integrates inductors with the diodes to create fixed point impedance matching for high speed data lines. Traditionally, system designers must compensate for the capacitance of the ESD protection device by adding external inductance, eliminating capacitance under the signal traces near the ESD device, or both. These approaches add complexity and cost, and are PCB board dependent, limiting the ability to use multiple board vendors. In many cases, this may not even be possible, particularly if the capacitance of the device is too high as is typical with existing 20kV ESD devices. The CM1234 eliminates the need for these measures, providing matched impedance with no external compensation or components required.

    CM1234 -- Increased ESD Protection

The CM1234 provides protection for four pairs of differential channels, offering ESD protection to IEC61000-4-2 standard + -15kV contact discharge and + - 20kV air discharge. The integration of inductors with the ESD diodes provides for improved ESD protection as well as outstanding signal integrity. Compared with current best in class ESD diode arrays, the CM1234 offers:

-- 40% reduction in peak clamping voltage -- 15-40% reduction in peak residual current -- 100 Ohm differential impedance matching with no external compensation required -- Straight through routing for improved layout -- Compact 16 pin TDFN package for reduced board space

    Updated http://www.XtremeESD.com Website

This new ESD Resource Center provides relevant information about ESD protection to designers of personal computer and digital consumer electronics applications. The site contains technical white papers, product specifications, articles, presentations and an open forum on various ESD protection topics. Go to: http://www.XtremeESD.com.

    Pricing and Availability

The CM1234 is available in a 16 lead TDFN package. It is currently sampling and will be in full production this quarter. It is priced at US$0.59 each at 1,000 units.

"Our CarrierSpan technology creates a solid foundation and flexible infrastructure for service delivery over carrier Ethernet and metro networks to better meet the needs of service providers," said Dr. Simon Milner, vice president and general manager, enterprise business unit, communications and consumer business group at Marvell. "With a complete portfolio of CarrierSpan-powered products ranging from Prestera(R) and LinkStreet(R) Packet Processors, to Alaska(R) Physical Layer devices (PHY) and Marvell's ARM instruction set compliant family of SoCs, Marvell is uniquely positioned to accelerate Network Equipment Manufacturer's (NEMs) time to revenue."

As Metro Ethernet and carrier networks have evolved from simple transport solutions to the delivery of quadruple play services, service providers and NEMs are faced with increasing challenges. Today's networks demand scalability up to hundreds of thousands of subscribers, while requiring support for different access technologies. In addition, the network fabric has to support a variety of services and applications, each demanding a unique combination of network resources. For example, some applications are time sensitive; others demand higher bandwidth, while others need guaranteed quality of service and security.

Marvell's CarrierSpan technology is designed to ensure line rate service delivery with enhanced packet processors based on new and emerging standards (TR101, Mac-in-Mac, IP-VPN, VPWS, VPLS). In addition, the new technology provides scalable multicast delivery capabilities for IP-based video. These features enable new revenue streams for providers offering managed services like business Internet access and secure VPNs.

Addressing the need for a robust service delivery fabric, CarrierSpan provides hardware assistance to insure five 9's uptime with reduced overhead in Operations, Administration and Management (OAM) of the network. Marvell Secures Ethernet Networks with LinkCrypt TechnologyLinkCrypt Powers Always Available, Secure Networks Ranging from 10's of Mbps to 100's of Gbps

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Furthering the Company's vision for a secure, managed, enterprise network, Marvell (http://www.marvell.com/) today introduced Marvell(R) LinkCrypt(TM) security technology for enterprise core, enterprise access and carrier Ethernet networks. LinkCrypt is a foundation technology which is designed to harden the existing infrastructure and embed security into the network fabric without compromising operational scalability.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070411/SFW034LOGO)

"With the heightened concerns for compliance driven by security regulations, coupled with the rampant growth of security infractions occurring from within the network, the need for continuous enforcement of network access control is becoming increasingly critical," said Awais Nemat, vice president of marketing, enterprise business unit, communications and consumer business group at Marvell. "Based on LinkCrypt-powered silicon solutions, customers can now maintain network performance and scalability while working with authentication and monitoring capabilities already in place within the existing IT infrastructure."

Designed as a horizontal technology to scale from 10's of Mbps to 100's of Gbps performance, LinkCrypt can be embedded across a broad portfolio of products while providing one of the lowest power consumption rates per gigabit of encrypted/decrypted traffic -- measured in watts/Gbps -- in the industry today. Compliant with the IEEE 802.1AE/af (Link Layer Security) standard, LinkCrypt has demonstrated interoperability with a variety of industry leading solutions and coexistence with other third party software and hardware security solutions.

Just as 802.11i extends the 802.1X authentication model to continuously protect data for the Wireless LAN, LinkCrypt technology extends the IEEE 802.1X model to protect data for the wired Ethernet on a link by link basis. Based on the ratified IEEE 802.1AE standard, LinkCrypt technology supports and enforces authentication of each device on the network while providing integrity and robustness to protocols which are not currently protected by any security standard. Traffic sent over a LinkCrypt secured network, is encrypted and authenticated by preventing a network node from hijacking the address of another node or lying about its own. LinkCrypt also helps reduce the risk of virus and worm propagation as well as other attacks, such as Denial of Service (DoS) that spoof the sender's identity. Moreover, LinkCrypt technology is compatible with the existing Ethernet infrastructure and can be enabled in an incremental fashion depending on the link vulnerability.

    Marvell Switching Solutions

With the addition of LinkCrypt, Marvell continues to build on its portfolio of Ethernet solutions in the data communications network.

The Marvell family of switching solutions is designed specifically to meet the demands of high-performance networks, and provide the reliability and resiliency necessary for business continuity. In addition, Marvell's solutions provide advanced security to protect data, network users and the network infrastructure, as well as robust quality of service (QoS) for IP applications including voice, video, and mission critical data services.
