Nokia Releases Software for Developing Connected Mobile Games in Java(TM) TechnologySNAP Mobile SDK 2.0 Evolves With More Intuitive Tools
SAN FRANCISCO and ESPOO, Finland - JavaOne, May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SNAP Mobile, Nokia's end-to end solution for connected mobile gaming in Java(TM) technology, has today announced its latest Software Development Kit (SDK 2.0). After several years of market deployment and continuous technology development based on developer feedback, the SNAP Mobile SDK 2.0 has evolved to make game development even more intuitive with a simpler API, faster emulation and testing tools. The SDK is free of charge and available through Forum Nokia, the largest mobile development community worldwide with 3.4 million registered members.
"With connected gaming on the rise, we're pleased that Nokia is able to offer developers a Java ME based solution that can be run across a wide variety of devices," said Craig Gering, senior director of Embedded Java Software, Sun Microsystems. "Sun and Nokia have been working together to ensure that the SNAP Mobile SDK works well with both the Sun Java Wireless Toolkit, and with the NetBeans IDE. Combining the SNAP Mobile SDK with Sun's award-winning mobile development solutions gives mobile game developers a highly productive environment to create the most entertaining experience for today's connected consumers."
The SNAP Mobile SDK 2.0 provides tools for creating connected mobile games for a broad range of Nokia and non-Nokia devices that comply with Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) 2.0 and Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) 1.1. The SDK includes the SNAP Mobile Client API libraries, an Emulation Environment application, a handset and network compatibility test tool, and sample applications and documentation that can be accessed from any Java Integrated Developer Environment (IDE).
The latest SNAP Mobile SDK is a significant step forward for Nokia with a new object-oriented API and improved UI framework that makes it more accessible for Java game developers to build games with online community functionality, such as in-game user registration and log-in, unique user identification, multiplayer and massively multiplayer gaming with opponent matchmaking and player rankings, Instant Messaging and contact list building. Additionally, the SDK strives to make it easier for developers to program because it requires fewer API calls to the server, especially in terms of error handling, and has reduced compliance testing from approximately two hours to one hour. With a combined operator network and handset compatibility test, developers can test their game in relation to specific local requirements.
"The SNAP Mobile SDK 2.0 makes it easier for developers to write and debug a connected mobile Java game, and brings fun to development," said Randolf Wu, business development director, PocketNet. "I had the SDK up and running on my desktop within minutes of downloading. It's invaluable as it provides a realistic game play environment for a cellular network. For example, it can simulate error conditions so that we can check that our games will respond appropriately when an error occurs. The SNAP Mobile SDK is a mature toolset to the point where bugs are not really an issue, and it just gets better and better with each release."
Developers attending the 2008 JavaOne conference are encouraged to visit the Nokia booth (#818/820) to speak with Nokia's Java technology experts to find out more about SNAP Mobile and its SDK 2.0.
The SDK 2.0 can be downloaded at http://www.forum.nokia.com/snapmobile

Sierra Wireless Adds IPsec VPN to AirLink(TM) Product LineThe integration of IPSec into the ALEOS(TM) and the AceWare(TM) suite of software provides remotely configurable data security
VANCOUVER, May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sierra Wireless today announced the addition of IPsec virtual private network (VPN) security enhancements to ALEOS(TM), the robust embedded intelligence available exclusively in the Sierra Wireless line of AirLink(TM) intelligent wireless gateways. This enhancement will greatly improve data security on the ALEOS-powered AirLink X and XT platforms, which include the Raven X, PinPoint X and Raven XT.
With extensive capabilities like remote monitoring and configuration, packet-level diagnostics and over-the-air firmware updates, ALEOS simplifies integration, installation, operation and maintenance of any wireless data solution. Its "always-on" and "always aware" connection management capabilities are essential for today's mission-critical applications. With the addition of IPsec VPN, ALEOS will now offer an extra layer of security to customers' data.
IPsec VPN provides a standards-based security solution for connecting to and managing remote assets, enabling customers to guard against unauthorized access to data. It delivers transparent end-to-end security to all applications without the need for costly software upgrades, additional equipment, or dedicated lines to the remote assets. An IP security layer at the end point ensures that IPsec VPN can be leveraged by all applications and peripherals connected to the Serial, USB or Ethernet ports of the AirLink gateways.
"Ensuring the security of the data from enterprise assets located outside an organization's physical facilities is a significant challenge that concerns many of our customers," said Justin Schmid vice president of marketing and business development for the Sierra Wireless Mobile and M2M group. "The addition of IPsec VPN to ALEOS will provide additional assurance that their remote assets and sensitive data are protected against unauthorized access."
Leveraging the Power of ALEOS and AceWare(TM)
To expedite setup and configuration of IPsec VPN on AirLink devices, the enhancement has been deeply integrated with AceWare, the robust suite of tools and utilities for remote device configuration, management and control of AirLink products. The user-friendly interface ensures that administrators can quickly and easily configure their fleet of devices for enhanced data security. All changes can be made either locally (tethered to the device), or remotely from a central location.
Customers with currently deployed compatible AirLink devices (Raven X, PinPoint X and Raven XT) can download the newest version of ALEOS with IPsec from the Sierra Wireless website at http://www.sierrawireless.com/product/airlink/aleos.aspx. AirLink devices with IPsec VPN pre-installed are expected to be available late in the second quarter of this year.
Key Features of ALEOS with IPSec VPN
- Standards-based IPsec is compatible with a wide range of applications
- Provides enhanced data security for all applications connected
through a compatible Airlink gateway
- No additional installation required
- Simple wizard-based setup
- Remote management, control and configuration via AceWare tools and
utilities

MedQuist Introduces Robust Integration Between SpeechQ for Radiology(TM) and PACS
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MedQuist Inc. (Pink Sheets: MEDQ) has recently developed and released an enhanced integration capability between its SpeechQ for Radiology(TM) interactive speech recognition solution and various medical imaging Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). This integration allows radiologists to move seamlessly between the two applications and significantly improve their productivity. The first PACS solution to take advantage of this robust integration is Philips iSite(TM).
With this integration enhancement, radiologists can quickly create a diagnostic report of their findings and provide this information to patients' physicians and caregivers. Among the dynamic actions possible via the new SpeechQ-PACS integration are:
-- Enhanced bidirectional ability, allowing PACS to control SpeechQ, and
SpeechQ to control PACS.
-- Implementation of true bidirectional messaging from PACS to SpeechQ,
and SpeechQ to PACS.
-- Implementation of true bidirectional communication of status and state
from PACS to SpeechQ, and SpeechQ to PACS.
-- Streamlined login and logout for the radiologists, improving workflow
and time efficiency.
-- Improved workflow for the radiologists for report creation, via
application synchronization features that reduce the number of "clicks"
the physician must go through to perform work.
"We have included this enhanced integration tool in our most recent Software Development Kit (SDK)," says Katheryn "Katie" McMahon, MedQuist product manager for speech recognition and integration. "Philips iSite is the first to fully implement the integration, but this SDK is available for all PACS vendors, and we expect that many other companies will want to take advantage of the new features that it provides."
One of the first customers using the new integration software is Inland Imaging LLC of Spokane, Wash. According to Jason Koller, director of Imagecast & SpeechQ at Inland Imaging, "Our radiologists really like the ability to open an image from SpeechQ. Many of them are attending physicians, and when they are working with a resident or fellow, it is easier for them to work from their report queue and then open the images. In the past, they were opening the report and then searching the PACS for the correct image(s). Now, they simply click one button on the SpeechQ screen, and any images associated with the report are immediately displayed on the PACS monitor. This is a major time savings, and ensures that all of the patient's related images are displayed."
MedQuist is the largest Medical Transcription Service Organization (MTSO) in the world, and a leader in technology-enabled clinical documentation workflow. MedQuist's enterprise solutions -- including mobile voice capture devices, speech recognition, Web-based workflow platforms, and global network of medical editors -- help healthcare facilities improve patient care, increase physician satisfaction, and lower operational costs. Xbox 360 and Boys & Girls Clubs of America Team Up for Inaugural National Family Fitness DayFamilies nationwide encouraged to join the 'DanceDanceRevolution' to promote healthy living.
REDMOND, Wash., May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 is teaming up with Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) to celebrate the inaugural National Family Fitness Day on May 12. National Family Fitness Day is a free, fun-filled event designed to promote healthy and active lifestyles for children and families. The key fitness activity will be playing "DanceDanceRevolution UNIVERSE 2" on Xbox 360. To help encourage families to get involved, supermodel, health guru and mother of three Christie Brinkley and health expert and physician Dr. Carlon Colker will commence the activities at the Children's Aid Society's Dunlevy Milbank Center Boys & Girls Club in New York.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)
On National Family Fitness Day, select Boys & Girls Clubs will participate in this after-school event by playing "DanceDanceRevolution UNIVERSE 2" on Xbox 360. This activity, coupled with healthy tips provided by Dr. Colker, will showcase how families can connect with each other and exercise in a way that is fun. Also on this day will be a fun, collaborative competition among participating Boys & Girls Clubs aiming to reach the goal of 500 participants and 18,000 calories burned while playing "DanceDanceRevolution" on Xbox 360. Boys & Girls Clubs in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Seattle will all join in to start a new revolution.
"We are proud to partner with Xbox 360 for National Family Fitness Day, which showcases the fact that getting fit can also mean having fun," said Roxanne Spillett, president and CEO of BGCA. "Playing active games like 'DanceDanceRevolution' on Xbox 360 not only encourages kids to get in shape, but also helps bring families together and enhances Triple Play, our existing health and wellness program."
"National Family Fitness Day is all about keeping kids and their parents active and healthy," said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "Playing 'DanceDanceRevolution' on Xbox 360 is one of many ways families can get up off the couch and have fun together."
"Making sure that my children stay active and healthy is my top priority," Brinkley said. "My children and I love to find new and exciting ways to get up and get moving, and playing games like 'DanceDanceRevolution' on Xbox 360 lets my kids have fun and get fit at the same time. And I have to admit, I have a blast playing it too."
Colker, who has trained top-tier professional athletes, recognizes the health benefits that "DanceDanceRevolution" on Xbox 360 can provide, and in addition, he offers the following health tips for families:
-- Shop healthy and cook at home. Buy fresh, perishable and unpackaged
foods whenever possible. If ingredient contents sound too complicated,
it is probably not a healthy choice. Get the whole family involved in
meal preparation. It can be fun time spent together, and it is
certainly healthier than fast-food alternatives.
-- Check out your local community center. Places such as Boys & Girls
Clubs of America offer great physical activities for children,
including soccer, baseball, swimming and physical video gaming such as
"DanceDanceRevolution" on Xbox 360. The supervision is top-notch and
the cost is reasonable.
-- Keep tabs on your physical activities. Whether it is having a family
activity list on the refrigerator, or even setting the Family Timer on
your Xbox 360 so that you know when you have hit your activity goal,
keep track of your activities and reward progress.
-- Keep a structured bedtime. You cannot expect your kids to have an
active lifestyle if they are tired all the time.
More about National Family Fitness Day, the great health benefits of playing "DanceDanceRevolution" on Xbox 360, additional healthy family tips from Dr. Colker, and information on the Xbox 360 Family Timer and parental controls can be found at http://www.xbox.com/familyfitness.

Synopsys Invests In Prover TechnologyInvestment highlights growth in worldwide railway control, command and signaling technology
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and STOCKHOLM, Sweden, May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Synopsys, Inc. , a world leader in software and IP for semiconductor design and manufacturing, and Prover Technology AB today announced that Synopsys has invested in Prover, which supplies signaling design automation solutions for engineering the safety critical systems that control trains, switches and signals. The funds will enable Prover to accelerate its research and development efforts and expand its operations in Europe, North America and Asia.
A key part of a modern railway engineering process is signaling design automation, which uses formal verification, a safety analysis method based on mathematical proof. Formal verification is strongly recommended by safety standards organizations such as CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), and several leading operators demand it from their suppliers. The reason: formal verification increases safety and quality, and provides more efficient processes for otherwise costly and time- consuming safety testing. It has proven to be a valuable solution for the operator of the Paris metro, which has one of the most complex railway networks in the world.
"RATP (Regie Autonome des Transports Parisiens) and Prover have been working closely together since 2004," said Pierre Chartier, safety director for RATP. "The collaboration has been focused on formal verification of interlocking and CBTC (communication-based train control) systems. By using formal techniques, we hope to reduce costs while maintaining the highest possible level of quality. Prover's experience in the field has made them a valuable partner."
"The growth of signaling design automation in railway systems plays a critical role in enhancing safety and increasing efficiencies in train throughput and cost reduction," said Randy Tinsley, vice president, Strategy & Corporate Development at Synopsys. "Our investment in Prover allows Synopsys to promote the application of technologies traditionally used for designing integrated circuits in different industries."
Having established a broad customer base, Prover's technology solution is well positioned to become the industry standard for specification and automated engineering of interlocking systems. As more attention is being paid to green transportation systems, the railway industry is expected to continue to expand significantly in the coming years. Prover's relationship with Synopsys will enable Prover to take advantage of these growth opportunities.
"Having Synopsys on board enables us to capitalize on opportunities that were previously out of our reach, and to undertake larger and more complex engineering projects," said Gunnar Stalmarck, CEO, Prover Technology. "There is a strong technology alignment with both companies providing the tools needed to engineer increasingly complex systems in their respective fields, and both are considered industry leaders and innovators."

Synopsys investit dans prover technology
MOUNTAIN VIEW, La Californie et STOCKHOLM, Suède, May 6 /PRNewswire/ --
CBTC (communication-based train control) et d'enclenchement.

Herley Chairman Announces Organizational Changes
LANCASTER, Pa., May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Herley Industries, Inc. Chairman and CEO, Myron Levy, released the following statement today:
"As we have previously announced, Herley Industries, Inc. and our former Chairman, Lee Blatt, have both settled our long-running dispute with the Justice Department within the last few days. With this issue finally behind us, the Board of Directors and management will turn our full attention to managing the Company.
With our goal firmly set on improving the profitability of the Company, we will significantly downsize our manufacturing facility in Farmingdale, New York as quickly as possible and transfer the bulk of its workload to our other facilities in Whippany, New Jersey; Woburn, Massachusetts; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Jerusalem, Israel.
While it is never pleasant to take this kind of action, it is necessary at General Microwave Corp. (GMC), which does business as Herley-Farmingdale. Despite our efforts to update and improve their operations, our Farmingdale facility has continued to report losses, quarter by quarter to Herley. This facility has been the single, largest contributor to poor corporate operating performance, and we simply cannot allow it to continue.
In 1999 we acquired GMC primarily to gain two assets that our Company needed. One was the microelectronics facility in Billerica, Massachusetts. That capability was quickly transferred to our existing facility in Woburn. The transfer was done well, and that hybrid business has been a vital, integral part of our overall operations. They supply other Herley facilities with the electronics that permit dumb bombs to become smart bombs, driver circuitry for multi-throw switches and most notably, the intelligence for the Sensor Fused Weapon (SFW).
General Microwave Israel (GMI), a subsidiary of GMC, was the second asset that we wanted in acquiring General Microwave. Herley's emphasis on international business is well known to our long-term shareholders. Beginning with our acquisition of Vega Systems in 1993, which gave us a presence in 22 foreign countries, we have worked hard to make our international business at least 33% of our overall business. We wanted the Israeli technical capability, and we wanted better access to European and Asian markets. In that regard, we succeeded admirably. Under the able leadership of Yonah Adelman, GMI has consistently been the highest profit producer within the Herley family, when measured as a percentage of total revenues. It is estimated that GMI this year will produce revenues that are approximately five times those at the time of our acquisition of GMC.
Herley Industries, Inc. is one of the world's premier microwave companies. To retain that position, we must constantly evaluate our strengths and weaknesses. We have four other facilities that can produce the business of Farmingdale. We believe that they can produce it better, faster, and more profitably. Farmingdale will remain a marketing office, with certain engineering prototype assets.
We are actively engaged in improving the efficiency of our operations, with a significant focus on performance improvements. This will include personnel adjustments as needed, such as the recent layoff at our Lancaster facility. We are convinced, however, that scaling back our Farmingdale facility is the next step toward improved profitability and increased shareholder value."
Herley Industries, Inc. is a leader in the design, development and manufacture of microwave technology solutions for the defense, aerospace and medical industries worldwide. Based in Lancaster, PA, Herley has eight manufacturing locations and approximately 965 employees. Additional information about the company can be found on the Internet at http://www.herley.com/

TI introduces Class-D audio amplifier with integrated boost converter to drive 1.5-W constant output powerMaintains loud volume across battery range to enhance portable audio performance
DALLAS, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) today introduced a monolithic, filter-free Class-D audio amplifier with an integrated boost converter for portable applications including wireless handsets, personal navigation devices, portable gaming and wireless speakers. Addressing the need for louder volume and higher output power from the speakers, the TPA2014D1 provides up to 1.5 W across an 8-Ohm load, ensuring that volume is maintained even when the battery discharges to its minimum voltage. (See http://www.ti.com/tpa2014d1-pr.)
Conventional Class-D amplifiers for portable devices are designed to provide high output power, which is dependent on battery voltage. As the battery discharges, the maximum output power decreases, causing reduced volume and increased distortion. The TPA2014D1 provides a higher constant output power across the entire Li-Ion battery range, thus maintaining loud volume, even as the battery discharges. In addition, the TPA2014D1 has a high overall efficiency of 85 percent, which results in longer battery life and increased talk/playback time.
Additional features of the device enhance portable audio performance. The TPA2014D1 features a wide voltage supply range of 2.5 V to 5.5 V and a very high power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) of 91 dB, which simplify power supply design and enable a connection directly to the battery without any degradation of sound quality. The TPA2014D1 includes an integrated phase-locked loop (PLL), which synchronizes the Class-D amplifier and boost converter clocks in order to eliminate potential audible beat frequencies.
Pricing and availability
The TPA2014D1 Class-D audio power amplifier is available now from TI and its authorized distributors in a 4 mm x 4 mm QFN package and will be available at the end of May in a very small 2.3 mm x 2.3 mm WCSP package, saving cost and considerable board area. Suggested resale pricing is $1.32 for the QFN package and $1.40 for the WCSP package in 1,000-piece quantities. Samples and EVMs are available from http://ti.com/audio.
Extending TI's offering for portable devices
The TPA2014D1 extends TI's portfolio of Class-D amplifiers for the portable market, such as the TPA2013D1, which is available for customers requiring higher output power and the ability to drive a 4-Ohm load. Both devices are designed to work with TI's portable audio converters such as the TLV320AIC3106, the TLV320DAC32 digital-to-analog converter and the Aureus(TM) platform of audio DSPs. TI provides the silicon, software, systems expertise and support for the entire audio signal chain, enabling customers to get to market quickly. NVIDIA Helps PC Users Go Green With Hybrid SLINew PC Platform Delivers Richer Visual Experience, Reduces Noise, and Power
SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- PC users love the visual realism that high-performance graphics processors give their PCs, but would rather do without the noise and power consumption typical of modern entertainment and gaming PCs. Starting today, however, they can have the best of both worlds, thanks to the new NVIDIA(R) platforms based on the company's Hybrid SLI(R) technology. These new platforms are the foundation for a new breed of PCs that deliver a richer visual experience while reducing energy consumption and costs, fan noise, and even heat. The new technology is available immediately with new NVIDIA nForce 780a SLI and GeForce 8 Series based motherboards.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020613/NVDALOGO )
"Hybrid SLI will give consumers the extra GPU performance they need for the increasing numbers of visual PC applications such as today's PC games," said Drew Henry, general manager of platform business at NVIDIA. "And it will give gamers and PC enthusiasts the quiet and power savings they demand. Hybrid SLI components could very well pay for themselves over the life of the PC."
The visual capabilities of typical PCs are driven by either integrated graphics on the motherboard or by higher performance, discrete graphics cards, like NVIDIA GeForce(R) GPUs. Unfortunately, the most common integrated graphics chips lack the performance and features needed by many popular modern 3D applications, games, and movies. Discrete graphics cards deliver a far superior visual experience, but consume more energy.
Hybrid SLI-enabled motherboards eliminate this problem by putting a GeForce GPU directly on the motherboard. This GeForce GPU has better DirectX compatibility and HD movie playback capability than the most common integrated graphics chips found in today's PCs, but consumes less energy than a discrete graphics card. But that's only the start.
Designed for PC enthusiasts and hard-core gamers, the HybridPower(TM) feature completely powers down the discrete graphics cards and switches graphics processing to the motherboard GPU in applications where major 3D horsepower is not required, such as e-mail and Web surfing. Users will appreciate the lower energy consumption, quieter PC operation, and less heat. When additional 3D horsepower is needed, HybridPower technology automatically transitions back to the discrete graphics cards, which are then powered up and ready to rock the 3D world. Hybrid SLI technology can save hundreds of dollars in energy costs over the life of the PC for high-end, enthusiast-class PCs, and deliver additional graphics performance for more mainstream desktops via these two features.(i)
For mainstream users, a Hybrid SLI technology feature called GeForce Boost allows the user to add an additional graphics card for even more graphics horsepower. By combining the performance of the motherboard GPU and graphics card discrete GPUs, GeForce Boost increases overall graphics performance up to 50% for today's visually intensive applications and home entertainment.
"NVIDIA continues to deliver outstanding innovation for AMD CPUs. We are especially excited that HybridPower, a feature of NVIDIA Hybrid SLI, will be introduced exclusively on AMD CPU-based platforms," said Leslie Sobon, director, product marketing, AMD. "The AMD Phenom(TM) X4 quad-core processors, together with this motherboard's HybridPower features, deliver powerful performance and energy efficiency, an important combination for AMD."
The Hybrid SLI-enabled desktop PC motherboards are designed to create a balanced PC with GeForce GPUs and AMD Phenom processors. Eight models, including a newly available nForce 780a SLI motherboard, are available:
-- nForce 780a SLI, nForce 750a SLI, nForce 730a, and nForce 720a
-- GeForce 8300, GeForce 8200, and GeForce 8100
Currently available Hybrid SLI-enabled discrete graphics cards include:
-- NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 and NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX (both HybridPower-
capable)
-- GeForce 8400 GS and GeForce 8500 GT (both GeForce Boost-capable)
Hybrid SLI-enabled PC motherboards for Intel processors and Hybrid SLI- enabled notebooks will be available in Q3 of 2008. For more information about NVIDIA Hybrid SLI technology please visit http://www.nvidia.com/Hybrid_SLI.

Zebra Technologies Selected by Wilson Sporting Goods to Implement Its RFID Compliance Labeling ProjectZebra's high-performance RFID printer/encoders enable Wilson to comply with retailer Gen 2 mandates
VERNON HILLS, Ill., May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Zebra Technologies , a global leader in specialty printing and automatic identification solutions, has announced that Amer Sports selected Zebra's EPC Gen 2-standard labeling system for its RFID compliance labeling project for shipments of its Wilson Sporting Goods brand. Zebra's best-of-breed RFID printer/encoders help manufacturers and distributors comply with UHF Gen 2 mandates while providing superior track and trace capabilities for total asset visibility throughout the supply chain.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080506/AQTU031)
When Wilson Sporting Goods, the world's leading manufacturer of ball sports equipment, needed to implement an RFID compliance system, Ed Matthews, director of information technology for Wilson turned to Zebra Technologies, a proven solution provider. "I had worked with Zebra before and knew their equipment was very reliable," said Matthews. "So, we moved right past that concern and got down to the project details."
The team at Wilson installed four Zebra R110Xi printer/encoders to label shipments that require RFID compliance tagging. "The R110Xi is ideally suited for use in harsh shipping environments due to its unprecedented level of reliability, flexibility and ruggedness," said Steve Park, Zebra vice president and general manager for RFID. "Additionally, organizations looking for high-volume labeling will benefit from some of its unique features such as flexible inlay placement, automatic calibration, multiple power levels and easier RFID programming."
The Zebra R110Xi is XML-enabled, so it allows for seamless integration into existing enterprise systems. At Wilson, the R110Xi printer/encoders interface directly with applications running on an SAP Auto ID Infrastructure (AII) via an IBM AS/400 host to receive the order information necessary to produce the shipping labels. Wilson was able to create XML smart label formats and load them onto the R110Xi printer/encoders. The AS/400 applications push the deliveries to SAP AII and then SAP AII pushes XML to printer/encoders, which process the information and create the smart label. Each label includes human-readable text, a bar code and an EPC number encoded in a Gen 2-standard tag. The labels are hand-applied to the cases and pallets, which are then routed past fixed-position RFID readers to capture the shipment information.
Another challenge for Wilson was that the company was undergoing a major change of their systems to SAP's enterprise resource planning system. Because the compliance system had to be running before the SAP migration would be complete, Wilson chose to run its RFID labeling system independent of SAP with plans to migrate to the new infrastructure upon its completion. Since the Zebra R110Xi printer/encoders support AII and have exclusive features that allow them to connect directly to SAP systems, Wilson will be able to integrate the printer/encoders to the SAP system following the upgrade.
When the new SAP system is complete, Wilson plans to integrate RFID data further into its operations so that it can encode additional information into its shipping labels, such as ship-to address, SKU number and item quantity. "As the system grows and we make additional use of the RFID data that is captured, we plan to install more Zebra printer/encoders at other facilities," said Matthews. "We've had a good relationship with Zebra and excellent support, so I am confident that the products will be seamlessly integrated into any future RFID protocols we implement."
