Verizon Ready and Eager to Bring Cable TV Competition to all of New York CityHistoric Proposal Discussed Today at New York City Franchise Committee Hearing; Vote Expected May 27Advanced Fiber-Optic Technology Unmatched for Ultra-Fast Broadband and Crystal-Clear TV Picture

NEW YORK, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon told the New York City Franchise and Concession Review Committee (FCRC) Tuesday (May 20) that the company is ready, committed and eager to install its advanced fiber-optics network throughout all five boroughs of the city and provide real TV choice to some 3.1 million households. Verizon is prepared to make a historic investment in the city, and plans to offer competitive cable service to hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers in the five boroughs later this year.

"We have the people, knowledge, resources and dedication to service to do the job and build our FiOS fiber-optic system in every New York City neighborhood," said Thomas Dunne, Verizon vice president for government affairs in New York, in testimony submitted to the committee. "We are eager to bring cable TV competition to the entire city. We know that residents here have but one choice for a wireline cable provider -- the cable monopoly that happened to be granted a franchise to operate in their neighborhood."

Verizon's proposal is the first ever by a provider to offer service in every neighborhood in New York City in competition with the cable monopoly. No other company has ever proposed bringing fiber to every New Yorker's home, as Verizon plans to do. This 12-year proposed agreement is unprecedented in scope and is designed to serve the unique needs of approximately 3.1 million households that will have access to FiOS TV, including households in multiple dwelling units. The principal provisions of the Verizon franchise propose:

-- One of the largest investments made by a telecommunications company in the nation's largest city: the full build-out of Verizon's state-of-the-art fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network throughout the entire city by mid-2014. -- Providing FiOS TV service to requesting customers in all five boroughs within a six-year time frame as Verizon's wire centers are upgraded to being video-capable. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers will have access to FiOS TV this year. -- An all-digital lineup of more than 400 channels and a growing library of more than 10,000 video-on-demand selections. -- Payment to the city of more than $4 million for a technology and education fund that will enable service to public and municipal buildings as well as other projects. -- Payment of approximately $18 million in grants through the life of the agreement to support public access via the city's five borough-based Community Access Organizations (CAOs). -- $10 million in grants to support the city's education and government access channels. -- More than 50 public, educational and governmental access channels for use by the city and the CAOs over the life of the agreement. -- Provision of a fiber-optic institutional network (known as an INET), primarily to support the city's public safety needs. -- Pay franchise fees equivalent to five per cent of gross revenues on cable TV service, as do other cable TV providers in the city. -- An extensive and appropriate set of customer service provisions.

Currently, only two franchised legacy cable TV companies operate in separate and distinct parts of the city, leaving consumers, effectively, with little or no competitive choice for their cable TV news, information and entertainment. While satellite providers may offer some a choice, for most New Yorkers it is not an option.

Dunne said, "City residents watch as cable franchises are awarded on Long Island, in Westchester, Rockland and Dutchess counties. They want and deserve the same kind of cable choice their suburban counterparts enjoy." Dunne told the committee, "The agreement before you opens the door to cable TV choice and competition."

The FCRC hearing followed the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications' agreement with Verizon on the terms of a historic citywide cable television franchise contract. A vote by the members of the FCRC is expected to be held May 27. If the committee and the city approve Verizon's proposal, it will be submitted to the New York Public Service Commission for confirmation, as are all cable franchises in New York state. If all approvals are achieved in a timely fashion, Verizon would begin offering service to city residents later this year.

Dunne said, "Verizon is ready to compete -- everywhere, in all five boroughs. We are committed to providing video and advanced broadband services to all neighborhoods in the city, regardless of ethnicity or income. That's the law -- but more important, it's simply who are and how we run our business.

"We have a vested personal and professional interest in delivering the best communications services to our customers -- because in so many cases, they're our friends, our neighbors and our families," he said.

Dunne pointed out that New York City-based Verizon is among the largest private employers, philanthropists and taxpayers in the city. More than 12,000 city residents are employed by Verizon, and the company has a proud history of being a union company, with a significant number of employees represented by the Communications Workers of America.

Verizon Communications Inc. , headquartered in New York, is a leader in delivering broadband and other wireline and wireless communication innovations to mass market, business, government and wholesale customers. Verizon Wireless operates America's most reliable wireless network, serving more than 67 million customers nationwide. Verizon's Wireline operations include Verizon Business, which delivers innovative and seamless business solutions to customers around the world, and Verizon Telecom, which brings customers the benefits of converged communications, information and entertainment services over the nation's most advanced fiber-optic network. A Dow 30 company, Verizon employed a diverse workforce of approximately 232,000 as of the end of the first quarter 2008 and last year generated consolidated operating revenues of $93.5 billion. Motorola Settles Iridium Bankruptcy Cases

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., May 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. today announced that on May 20, 2008, Judge James M. Peck approved a global settlement of disputes in the Iridium bankruptcy cases pending in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Approval of this settlement resolves in Motorola's favor, at no out of pocket cost to the Company, all pending claims against the Company arising out of Iridium's bankruptcy proceedings.

"This is a favorable outcome for Motorola," said Peter Lawson, executive vice president and chief counsel for Motorola. "We have always been confident in our litigation position, and this resolution -- ending the entire case at no out of pocket cost to Motorola -- confirms our confidence was well-founded. We are pleased to conclude this matter and resolve all of the Company's exposure to claims in the Iridium bankruptcy court."

Anne McClain Sidrys, a partner in Kirkland & Ellis, trial counsel for Motorola, commented, "This case has been hard fought throughout its long run, against skilled and committed opponents. It is gratifying to bring the matter to a close."

Since 2001, the court-appointed statutory creditors' committee has been actively pursuing claims against Motorola for voidable preference, fraudulent conveyance, breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty, and sought more than $4 billion in total damages. With the global settlement announced today, Motorola will pay nothing.

This favorable resolution follows Motorola's victory in a first phase trial conducted by Judge Peck from October 2006 to June 2007, which focused on certain essential elements -- solvency and capital adequacy -- of the committee's $3 billion preference and fraudulent conveyance claims. Judge Peck ruled entirely in favor of Motorola in August 2007, and in September 2007 entered judgment for Motorola on those claims.

At the same time, Judge Peck also set the committee's remaining claims for trial. Rather than proceed to an expensive and time-consuming further trial, the parties conducted comprehensive settlement discussions, including a mediation held in February 2008. The global settlement approved by Judge Peck and announced today was the result of those discussions.

Free Wireless Phone and Cybersafety Classes for California Senior CitizensAT&T announces free technology classes to start during Older Americans Month

SAN ANTONIO, May 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In recognition of Older Americans Month, AT&T Inc. announced today that the company is launching free briefings to seniors on how to operate their mobile phones and on Internet cybersafety in various cities throughout the country. The briefings will continue through the rest of the year.

"The good news is that the percentage of seniors (65+) using broadband at home nearly doubled from 2005 to 2007. The bad news is that seniors can fall victim to scams and other nefarious actions while online," said Ken McNeely, president of AT&T California. "And with more than four million seniors living here in California, we think collaborative educational programs like these make a lot of sense."

Pilot briefings on mobile phones were hosted by OASIS, a national nonprofit educational organization for mature adults, with programming in at least 26 cities in the U.S. Using the OASIS model as a guide, AT&T teams in various states will reach out throughout the year to other organizations and facilities that serve mature adults.

In the OASIS pilots, participants received one-on-one coaching from AT&T volunteers, who answered participants' questions and helped them learn to use their current phones, regardless of which carrier they were using. More than 300 seniors have learned several functions of their mobile phones, from basic inbound and outbound call techniques to text messaging functions.

"We are pleased to have launched this important and popular program for our members, who increasingly look to their mobile phones as a mode of communication with the outside world," said Marcia Kerz, president of OASIS. "It's unusual for any company to offer free programs like this, which is a hit because seniors can learn in a comfortable setting. The participants have responded very positively to the information they have learned."

The pilot briefings with OASIS were held in a handful of cities, including Houston, Phoenix, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. Upcoming briefings will include St. Louis, Chicago, San Antonio and Rochester, N.Y.

In addition, AT&T will hold its first cybersafety briefing for seniors at an event hosted by the National Caucus and Center on Black Aged (NCBA) in Chicago on May 29. Cybersafety briefings will become available at various cities throughout the country.

The briefings will help provide tips to seniors on the challenges of staying safe on the Internet and on their wireless phone and will cover the following topics:

-- Spam and scams -- Fraud and phishing -- Identity theft -- Privacy -- Spyware -- Social networking sites, including card games such as bridge and other activities

"Increasingly, the senior population is using the Internet for a wide variety of applications, including accessing personal health records, shopping, online learning and managing finances -- far more than just e-mailing photos of children and grandchildren," said Kristin Fabos, executive director for SeniorNet, an organization of computer-using adults 50 and older, with 150 SeniorNet Computer Learning Centers throughout the country. "With such increased usage comes increased security concerns, so we need to do what we can to educate our members on cybersafety."

SeniorNet and OASIS are members of AT&T's Advisory Panel on Access Aging, which meets quarterly with AT&T's key decision-makers and advises on issues that affect customers and employees who are aging and/or have disabilities.

For more information on these programs and other online safety initiatives by AT&T, please visit http://www.att.com/safety. See more about the OASIS program at http://www.oasisnet.org/cities/cellphones.htm and for more information about SeniorNet visit http://www.seniornet.org/.

EMC Extends the Power of Application Discovery and Best Practices for VMware(R)-Enabled Data CentersUnveils EMC Smarts Application Discovery Manager 6.0 Offering Comprehensive Visibility Into Virtual Dependencies and Compliance to Business Rules and Best Practices

LAS VEGAS, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- EMC WORLD 2008 -- EMC , the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today unveiled the newest version of its application discovery and dependency mapping solution -- EMC Smarts Application Discovery Manager (ADM) 6.0. Core to Version 6.0 is the solution's full support for VMware virtualized environments -- dramatically extending IT operations' visibility and control across physical, virtual and mixed data centers.

Smarts ADM 6.0's comprehensive insight into business applications and the supporting IT infrastructure in VMware environments helps IT support its service levels to the business. New to Smarts ADM 6.0 is the Smarts ADM "Virtual Listener," which introduces breakthrough virtual management capabilities eliminating the need to deploy agents with every virtual machine. Passively "listening" to application traffic across the VMware Virtual Switch (vSwitch), data center managers benefit from dynamic, real-time visibility into virtual relationships. The end result establishes dependencies of virtual machines to one another in the delivery of business application services and for the construction of data protection and disaster recovery plans for VMware Site Recovery Manager and VMware Consolidated Backup.

When used in conjunction with EMC IT Compliance Analyzer -- Application Edition 1.1, also announced today -- Smarts ADM dramatically increases user control over virtual environments to help facilitate IT compliance within VMware implementation strategies, VMware operational best practices, and regulatory requirements such as PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) and HIPAA.

"VMware has the potential to bring a new level of speed and efficiency to businesses today, enabling companies to deploy new systems and applications faster. It can also enable superior business continuity for critical services by providing a resilient and dynamic set of resources to draw from to support desired levels of application service performance," said Dennis Drogseth, Vice President, EMA. "But transforming the data center doesn't come without critical changes in management tools, which need to adapt."

"VMware virtualization has streamlined IT management for data centers of all sizes that often have a mix of both virtual and physical environments," said Parag Patel, Vice President, Alliances at VMware. "EMC's new Application Discovery Manager combined with VMware virtualization helps customers to effectively manage these mixed environments. The solution provides our customers with the visibility to monitor the application infrastructure while benefiting from the business advantages of VMware virtualization, including reduced capital and operating expenses, high levels of business continuity, strengthened security and improved energy efficiencies."

Smarts Application Discovery Manager complements VMware VirtualCenter by enabling IT operations to automatically track and manage configuration changes and understand virtual-to-physical relationships in the application infrastructure. The solution continuously provides full visibility into the application services dependencies across a VMware-enabled infrastructure.

The solution also enables IT organizations to: -- Comply with Best Practices for Planning and Optimizing VMware(R)-enabled Data Centers, such as: -- Viewing application dependencies to enhance configuration planning -- Improving resource utilization by automatically identifying virtual machines no longer in use -- Identifying VMware ESX hosts that are not currently managed by VMware VirtualCenter -- Applying policies that check VMware VMotion activity for optimal configurations -- Understanding application dependencies and usage to optimally configure VMware ESX hosts -- Build Data Protection Plans for VMware environments, Including VMware Site Recovery Manager and VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) -- Populate CMDBs to Leverage and Maintain VMware and Physical Infrastructure Information

"EMC's view is that virtualization in general, and VMware specifically, are redefining the data center. Today's announcement demonstrates our commitment to leading the way in VMware integrated management tools," said Chris Gahagan, EMC's Senior Vice President, Resource Management Software. "The announcements complement existing VMware management solutions, such as EMC ControlCenter 6.0 -- effectively bridging the management gap between physical and virtual data centers and across the full stack, including applications, network and storage."

Verizon Wireless Is Prepared for 2008 Hurricane Season in North CarolinaOne Hundred Percent of Verizon Wireless Cell Sites Have Battery Back-Up and Generators are Installed at 95 Percent of the Cell Sites In North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- While North Carolina has been spared a direct hit during the last few hurricane seasons, Verizon Wireless announced today the company has completed extensive preparations for the 2008 Hurricane Season to ensure North Carolinians have strong, comprehensive wireless coverage and service this hurricane season and beyond.

Verizon Wireless, builder and operator of the nation's most reliable wireless network, has spent more than $96 million across North Carolina to strengthen and enhance its wireless network. Highlights of these enhancements include expanding and enhancing regional switching facilities, erecting new digital cell sites with on-site back-up power, expanding statewide the company's (EV-DO) highest-speed (Revision A) digital network and completing a Disaster Response Trailer (DRT) mobile customer service unit.

In addition, the Verizon Wireless network team of "Test Men and Women" engineers has been rolling across the state in its fleet of test vehicles to fine tune its all-digital network and ensure reliable, comprehensive coverage in special preparation for the upcoming storm season, as well as throughout the year.

"We're not going to let our guard down, because wireless communication is so important during emergencies," said Jerry Fountain, Carolinas/Tennessee region president of Verizon Wireless. "We're going to continue to heavily invest, thoroughly prepare and tirelessly work to provide North Carolinians with the most reliable wireless service each time they use their phone and in case of an emergency."

Additional highlights of the Verizon Wireless 2008 Hurricane Season preparation and network enhancement include:

-- A comprehensive emergency response plan, including preparing emergency command centers across the state in the case of a storm or other crisis. -- Erecting during the past year over 100 new digital cell sites, of which about 95 percent have their own on-site generators. -- Verizon Wireless network technicians (who serve as the inspiration for the famous TV Test Man) have traveled more than 6,650 miles across the state this past year in their fleet of test vehicles ($250,000 each equipped with phones, wireless data devices and computers to measure the quality of voice and data calls on Verizon Wireless and other carriers.) -- The company also has a fleet of dozens of Cells on Wheels (COWS) and Cells on Light Trucks (COLTS), and generators on trailers (GOaTS) that can be rolled into hard-hit locations or areas that need extra network capacity. -- Pre-arranging fuel delivery to mobile units and generators to keep the network operating at full strength even if power is lost for an extended period of time. -- The company has expanded its EV-DO wireless broadband network, including launching its highest-speed Rev. A network throughout the state.

These new technologies, facilities and other network-strengthening efforts are part of an investment exceeding $815 million in the state over the past eight years. Nationally, in that time period, Verizon Wireless has spent about $45 billion to enhance its digital wireless network.

Verizon Wireless offers residents along the coast of the Tarheel State these tips to be safer during hurricanes and other times of crisis:

-- Keep wireless phone batteries fully charged -- in case local power is lost -- well before warnings are issued. -- Have additional charged batteries and car-charger adapters available for back-up power. -- Keep phones, batteries, chargers and other equipment in a dry, accessible location. -- Maintain a list of emergency phone numbers -- police, fire, and rescue agencies; power companies; insurance providers; family, friends and co-workers; etc. -- and program them into your phone. -- Distribute wireless phone numbers to family members and friends. -- Forward your home phone calls to your wireless number if you will be away from your home or have to evacuate. The company also urges the following actions once a storm is on the way: -- Limit non-emergency calls to conserve battery power and free-up wireless networks for emergency agencies and operations. -- Send brief TXT messages rather than voice calls for the same reasons as above. -- Check weather and news reports available on many internet-connected and other wireless phones applications when power is out. About Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless operates the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, serving 67.2 million customers. GREENVILLE, S.C., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- While South Carolina has been spared a direct hit during the last few hurricane seasons, Verizon Wireless announced today the company has completed extensive preparations for the 2008 Hurricane Season to ensure South Carolinians have strong, comprehensive wireless coverage and service this hurricane season.

Verizon Wireless, builder and operator of the nation's most reliable wireless network, has spent more than $139 million across the Palmetto State to strengthen and enhance its wireless network. Highlights of these enhancements include expanding and enhancing regional switching facilities, erecting new digital cell sites with on-site back-up power, expanding statewide the company's (EV-DO) highest-speed (Revison A) digital network and completing a Disaster Response Trailer (DRT) mobile customer service unit.

In addition, the Verizon Wireless team of Test Men and Women has been rolling across the state in its fleet of test vehicles to fine tune its all- digital network and ensure reliable, comprehensive coverage in special preparation for the upcoming storm season, as well as throughout the year.

"We are constantly working to improve our network coverage and reliability because wireless communication plays such a crucial role during emergencies, including those involving severe weather," said Jerry Fountain, Carolinas/Tennessee region president of Verizon Wireless. "We will continue to heavily invest, thoroughly prepare and work to not only provide South Carolinians with the most reliable wireless service in an emergency, but also preventive safety tips that they can follow on a daily basis to prepare for future crises."

Additional highlights of the Verizon Wireless 2008 Hurricane Season preparation and network enhancement include:

-- A comprehensive emergency response plan, including preparing emergency command centers across the state in the case of a storm or other crisis. -- Erection of nearly 34 new digital cell sites during the past year, of which about 90 percent have their own on-site generators. -- Verizon Wireless network technicians (who serve as the inspiration for the famous TV Test Man) that traveled more than 5,700 miles across the state this past year in their fleet of test vehicles ($250,000 each equipped with phones, wireless data devices and computers to measure the quality of voice and data calls on Verizon Wireless and other carriers.) -- A Communications Store on wheels* that is ready to roll at all times. The 35-foot trailer allows Verizon Wireless to maintain retail operations in areas when company stores are not able to open or when retail services are needed in areas where natural disaster strikes, enabling customers to purchase the wireless phones and accessories they need. -- Wireless Emergency Communication Centers* (WECCs) that can be quickly set up to serve residents and rescue agencies in the area(s) in the greatest need following an emergency situation. -- A fleet of dozens of Cells on Wheels (COWS) and Cells on Light Trucks (COLTS), and generators on trailers (GOaTS) that can be rolled into hard-hit locations or areas that need extra network capacity. -- Pre-arranging fuel delivery to mobile units and generators to keep the network operating at full strength even if power is lost for an extended period of time. -- Expansion of the company's EV-DO wireless broadband network, including launching its highest-speed Rev. A network throughout the state. This allows the most advanced wireless services (downloads, location-based applications, video messaging, etc.) and makes the network more robust for usage by residents and emergency agencies.

These new technologies, facilities and other network-strengthening efforts are part of an investment exceeding $600 million in the state over the past eight years. Nationally, in that time period, Verizon Wireless has spent about $45 billion to enhance its digital wireless network.

Verizon Wireless offers residents along the coast of South Carolina these tips to be safer during hurricanes and other times of crisis:

-- Keep wireless phone batteries fully charged - in case local power is lost - well before warnings are issued. -- Have additional charged batteries and car-charger adapters available for back-up power. -- Keep phones, batteries, chargers and other equipment in a dry, accessible location. -- Maintain a list of emergency phone numbers - police, fire, and rescue agencies; power companies; insurance providers; family, friends and co- workers; etc. - and program them into your phone.

Mobile Giving Foundation Creates a New Way of Contributing to the World Through Mobile PhonesFounding Donation from Qualcomm Kicks Off Capital Campaign

BELLEVUE, Wash., May 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Mobile Giving Foundation (MGF) today announced that Qualcomm Incorporated , a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies and data solutions, through its Wireless Reach(TM) initiative, has become the organization's founding patron to fulfill the MGF's mission to create a single "mobile giving channel" that allows more than 250 million wireless users in the U.S. to make charitable contributions instantly through SMS from their cell phones.

The MGF will facilitate charitable giving across wireless operators by acting as the messaging gateway, compliance entity, billing settlement and records clearinghouse between operators and participating charities. By using text messaging, donors can choose to send a small donation in support of specific causes. These transactions will be recorded on the donor's wireless bill, with the MGF providing data feeds that will allow annual notifications showing total contributions per donor, if desired.

"The generous support of Qualcomm and our contributors gives us the financial underpinning to enable the mobile channel for charitable giving through mobile phones," said Jim Manis, founder of the MGF. "We believe the ease of use and immediate response inherent in wireless communication will have a very positive effect on fundraising efforts of charitable groups, expand the U.S. base of giving and enable people to support their favorite causes through a new channel committed to the highest standards."

"Qualcomm is proud to be a founding patron of this effort," said Shawn A. Covell, senior director of International Government Affairs for Qualcomm. "The Company's Wireless Reach initiative seeks to empower communities through advanced wireless technologies and is committed to innovations that redefine the way people interact with their world. We support the mission of the MGF because it creates a new way for mobile users to connect with charitable organizations that matter most to them."

Manis, a wireless industry veteran who was instrumental along with the U.S. wireless operators in launching wireless giving campaigns following Hurricane Katrina and the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, has been working to establish the MGF since 2007. Prior to Qualcomm's participation, Manis and a group of other wireless executives had achieved 501(c)3 tax exempt status, enlisted significant wireless industry participation and certified the participation of many non profit organizations.

The use of the mobile giving channel was tested during the Super Bowl game in Arizona this February. United Way ran a single, 10-second spot to encourage donations via text messaging to an anti-childhood obesity campaign and was phenomenally successful according to Michael Schreiber, CEO of United eWay.

Other campaigns utilizing text message responses to fundraising appeals are currently underway, including the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), which can be supported by texting "give" to 27722, and singer Alicia Keys' "Keep a Child Alive" campaign to fight AIDS in Africa, which can be supported by texting "alive" to 90999.

In addition to Qualcomm's donation, the MGF has received additional founding sponsorships from 1024 Wireless Services, Acta Wireless, Hook Mobile, Mobile Accord and VeriSign. The foundation is attempting to raise a $1 million operating budget for each of the next two years, and is planning to launch a formal fundraising effort at the MMA Mobile Marketing Forum at the Marriott Marquis Times Square Hotel in New York City on June 11, 2008.

    About the Mobile Giving Foundation

The Mobile Giving Foundation is enabling the mobile channel for charitable giving by providing the organizational layer, operational guidelines and technical infrastructure for non profit organizations and donors to use the incredible power and convenience of mobile technology. For further information, please refer to the MGF Web site at http://www.mobilegiving.org/.

Microsoft Highlights Breadth in Mobile Advertising at advance08Company announces display advertising on Windows Live for mobile services, search advertising in beta on Live Search Mobile.

REDMOND, Wash., May 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today at Microsoft Corp.'s online advertising leadership forum, advance08, Brian McAndrews, senior vice president of the Advertiser & Publisher Solutions Group, announced the availability of display advertising across two popular Windows Live for mobile services, the launch of new markets for Windows Live for mobile services, and upcoming advertising plans for its Live Search Mobile offering. This marks the first year that mobile advertising has played a leading role at the industry event that brings together some of the most influential thought leaders of the global advertising community.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

Announced today, advertisers can now extend their campaigns to social media through Windows Live for mobile in France, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S. by creating banner ads that will be visible across Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Hotmail. This builds upon Microsoft's initial launch of mobile advertising for MSN Mobile in France, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S. where mobile ads are available alongside premium MSN Mobile content. Advertising on Windows Live for mobile is already available in Spain, and later this month will be available in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, further extending its availability for advertisers. All ads placed on these two popular services will adhere to Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) guidelines.

"In today's connected world, the mobile device is emerging as a prime opportunity for advertisers to reach their audience," said Brian Arbogast, corporate vice president of Mobile Services at Microsoft. "This announcement is evidence of our commitment to providing advertisers with further opportunities to connect and engage consumers throughout their 'digital day' -- at home, at work and on the go across multiple platforms, devices and geographic regions."

"FedEx is committed to servicing our customers across mobile devices and creating awareness of our mobile applications so we can service them anytime, anywhere," said Steve Pacheco, director of advertising at FedEx. "As we profile our innovative application, mobile.fedex.com, working with emerging media platforms allows us to communicate broadly with our customer base."

Microsoft also announced plans to further expand its mobile offerings for advertisers to now include mobile search advertisements on Live Search Mobile. For the first time invited advertisers can create keyword campaigns through Microsoft adCenter that target customers on the go while they are using Live Search Mobile. This will be the first time that Microsoft has enabled advertisers to monetize its popular mobile search service. The beta is currently available in the U.S. and will be expanded in the second half of 2008.

Microsoft also announced that it has more than doubled its market availability for Windows Live for mobile from 22 markets to 49. Windows Live for mobile provides the company's 430 million Windows Live customers with mobile access to Windows Live Hotmail, Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Spaces from almost all Web-enabled mobile handsets.

Today's announcement further demonstrates the momentum Microsoft is making in the mobile advertising market since its acquisition of ScreenTonic SA in May 2007. Those interested in trying out Microsoft's mobile Web services such as Windows Live for mobile, MSN Mobile and Live Search Mobile can visit http://www.mobile.msn.com/ from a mobile device with an Internet browser. Advertisers who want more information on how to advertise on MSN or Windows Live for mobile can go to http://advertising.microsoft.com/.

Microsoft Highlights Breadth in Mobile Advertising at advance08

    REDMOND, Washington, May 20 /PRNewswire/ --

    - Company announces display advertising on Windows Live for mobile services, search advertising in beta on Live Search Mobile.

Today at Microsoft Corp's online advertising leadership forum, advance08, Brian McAndrews, senior vice president of the Advertiser & Publisher Solutions Group, announced the availability of display advertising across two popular Windows Live for mobile services, the launch of new markets for Windows Live for mobile services, and upcoming advertising plans for its Live Search Mobile offering. This marks the first year that mobile advertising has played a leading role at the industry event that brings together some of the most influential thought leaders of the global advertising community.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO )

Announced today, advertisers can now extend their campaigns to social media through Windows Live for mobile in France, Spain, the UK and the US by creating banner ads that will be visible across Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Hotmail.

This will be the first time that Microsoft has enabled advertisers to monetise its popular mobile search service. The beta is currently available in the US and will be expanded in the second half of 2008.

Those interested in trying out Microsoft's mobile Web services such as Windows Live for mobile, MSN Mobile and Live Search Mobile can visit http://www.mobile.msn.com from a mobile device with an Internet browser. Advertisers who want more information on how to advertise on MSN or Windows Live for mobile can go to http://advertising.microsoft.com.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080312/CLW018LOGO )

"As anticipated, all of the institutional investors that participated in the November 2007 financing exercised their warrants," said Charles Gassenheimer, Chairman of Ener1, Inc. "The only investor that did not exercise its warrants was a family trust that already has a substantial investment in Ener1. We are pleased with the results of the November financing round, and believe that this provides us the foundation for growth and certainty, in an uncertain capital markets environment. Additionally, we intend this to be the last form of private financing, and should any capital need to be raised, it will be in the form of public financing. We also now have access to a $7 million equipment lease facility that will help finance our plant expansion in Indianapolis and increase our financial flexibility."

Monsanto Receives Recognition for Commitment to Safety

ST. LOUIS, May 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Monsanto has received the Dale Randall Traveling Award from Chapter VII of the Voluntary Protection Program Participants Association (VPPPA). Monsanto is the second recipient of the award, which recognizes companies for their dedication to raising safety awareness in the workplace.

The chapter's board of directors selects the award recipient based on its performance in occupational safety, health and environmental management. To earn the award, a company must have at least one Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) site and be dedicated to the success of both the VPP and VPPPA.

Monsanto will receive the award at VPPPA's Chapter VII regional conference in Des Moines, Iowa on May 21. Guests will include David Neil, labor commissioner of Iowa; Charles Adkins, Chapter VII Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) director; and Davis Layne, executive director of the national VPPPA.

"Receiving this award is a great honor," said Mark Leidy, executive vice president and Monsanto's global manufacturing lead. "We've worked hard to ensure our worldwide facilities are as safe as possible, so it's nice to be recognized for our people's efforts and accomplishments in safety awareness."

Monsanto has 14 VPP Star sites in Chapter VII's area. Star certification is OSHA's top safety classification. To earn the designation, a site must undergo a rigorous OSHA audit, demonstrating its safety programs and practices reach high levels of excellence. It must also have an accident rate below the rest of the industry.

"Safety is personal and 24/7 at Monsanto," said Emer O'Broin, Monsanto's vice president of environmental, safety and health. "Our employees are dedicated to the safety of themselves, their colleagues, their families and communities, and it's a distinction to see their work recognized by the VPPPA."

The VPPPA is a member-based association committed to cooperative occupational safety, health and environmental management systems. Chapter VII of the organization, which includes Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri, instituted this award in 2006 to honor the memory of Dale Randall, a member who dedicated his life to encouraging others about safety awareness.
