New Web Site Highlights Norfolk Southern's Steps to Sustainability

NORFOLK, Va., May 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Norfolk Southern Corporation today introduced a new Web site to communicate about its sustainability efforts.

To visit the site, go to http://www.nscorp.com/footprints or from the NS home page at http://www.nscorp.com/ click the "learn more about NS and the environment" tag.

Asking "What footprints will we leave in the world," the site outlines NS' broad-based sustainability initiative. That includes developing public-private partnerships to improve the nation's rail transportation network while supporting the economy; focusing on safety to benefit employees and communities; minimizing use of natural resources; and reducing, reusing, and finding alternatives for commonly used railroad materials.

"An important part of sustainability on the railroad involves employee, customer, and supplier input," said F. Blair Wimbush, vice president real estate and corporate sustainability officer. "We invite visitors to use the 'Your Ideas' area of the new Web site to submit their thoughts -- whether individual or global in concern -- about how we can become better environmental citizens."

Another feature of the site is NS' "Green Machine" carbon footprint analyzer. The Green Machine illustrates how shippers can reduce emissions as rail becomes a larger component of supply chains. The calculator shows how many automobiles would have to be taken off highways, and how many trees would need to be planted, in order to achieve air quality improvements equivalent to those offered by greater use of rail.

NS is a member of the S.E.E. Change (Society, Environment, Economy) initiative of the Business Roundtable and recently was named to the list of 100 Best Citizens for 2008 by CRO (Corporate Responsibility Officer) Magazine.

Norfolk Southern Corporation is one of the nation's premier transportation companies. Its Norfolk Southern Railway subsidiary operates approximately 21,000 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia, serving every major container port in the eastern United States and providing superior connections to western rail carriers. TV Choice and Competition Near for Residents of Happy Valley, Ore.Community Approves Video Franchise for Verizon

BEAVERTON, Ore., May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Residents of Happy Valley are a major step closer to having a real choice for television service, thanks to a newly approved agreement authorizing Verizon to offer its FiOS TV service, delivered over the most advanced fiber-optic network straight to customers' homes.

The Happy Valley City Council voted to grant a franchise to Verizon Tuesday night (May 20), paving the way for video choice in the communities. The vote brings to 18 the total number of Oregon communities that have approved video franchises for Verizon.

"This is great news for residents of Happy Valley, who now will soon have a new choice for their video entertainment," said David Valdez, Verizon senior vice president for the Pacific Northwest. "Consumers in these communities will be able to choose their cable provider as easily as they choose their phone company. Competition like this drives innovation and value, and puts the consumer in control."

Verizon's FiOS TV is a formidable competitor to cable and satellite, offering a broad collection of all-digital programming, 27 high-definition (HD) channels in the Oregon market and access to more than 10,000 on-demand titles, 70 percent of which are free.

Verizon's fiber network delivers amazingly sharp pictures and sound, and has the capacity to transmit a wide array of high-definition programming that is so clear and intense it seems to leap from the TV screen. In addition to FiOS TV, Verizon's fiber network also delivers Internet download speeds of up to 30 Mbps (megabits per second) and upload speeds of up to 15 Mbps, as well as high-quality voice service.*

Happy Valley joins a growing list of Oregon communities that are paving the way for competition and choice in the television market. Verizon has been granted video franchises in the following cities and counties:

Beaverton, Cornelius, Durham, Dundee, Forest Grove, Hillsboro, King City, Lake Oswego, McMinnville, Newberg, Rivergrove, Sherwood, Tigard, Tualatin, Wilsonville, and Washington and Yamhill counties.

Perot Systems and National Life Group Win Best First Steps From Outsourcing CenterPerot Systems Earns Fourth Award in Five Years

PLANO, Texas, May 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Perot Systems Corporation today announced that the company and its client, National Life Group (NLGroup), are the recipients of the "Best First Steps" award in the distinguished 2008 Outsourcing Excellence Awards. Sponsored annually by the Everest Group and Forbes magazine, these awards honor the most outstanding outsourcing relationships worldwide. Perot Systems also received the "Best Partnership" ranking this year along with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.

This is the third straight year that Perot Systems has received an award, the fourth in five years, and is the first Outsourcing Excellence Award for National Life Group. Previously, Perot Systems received the "2004 Best Partnership" top honor with Owens & Minor, the "2006 Best ITO" with Vanguard, and the "2007 Best Partnership" with Old Mutual Financial Network (OMFN).

"Our connection with Perot Systems is very strong today, reflecting how much we have grown and accomplished together in the past two years," states Frank Costantino, vice president and chief technology officer, NLGroup. "They worked with us through some difficult challenges, and we have an excellent relationship as a result. We built a mutual trust that was based on open communication, honesty and hard work."

The "Best First Steps" award, for relationships younger than one year of working together beyond transition, is given to the relationship the judges believe is the most outstanding example of companies structuring their outsourcing arrangement on foundational best practices that will lead to a successful relationship that can transition through challenges and keep the parties' interests aligned as change occurs over the length of the contract. Perot Systems and NLGroup were selected by a panel of industry experts after a rigorous review of all components of relationship structure as well as challenges and outcomes achieved within the first year.

"Our approach and commitment to NLGroup is something we are very proud of, and something we bring to every client relationship," said John Vonesh, president of Perot Systems' insurance and business process solutions group. "This kind of commitment requires much of each organization, but it can yield great rewards if we trust each other throughout the process in a true spirit of cooperation."

"The judges deemed this relationship as the Best First Steps because of the way Perot Systems and NLGroup built mutual trust early in their relationship and the way they jointly worked through the challenges of missing data and other issues arising during NLGroup's migration from a prior service provider and failed relationship." said Debra Floyd, COO, Outsourcing Center and Director, Outsourcing Excellence Awards program.

"By working together we were able to overcome some early obstacles, which makes us even more proud of the award as a testament to the strength of our relationship," added Bruce Palmer, Perot Systems client executive for NLGroup.

Stories of the winning relationships, published by Outsourcing Center, will be available online in the August issue of Outsourcing Journal (http://www.outsourcing-journal.com/).

Perot Systems provides third-party administration (TPA) and BPO solutions, infrastructure outsourcing, and applications solutions to the life, annuity and health insurance markets. Perot Systems also administers three million life and annuity contracts (both active and closed block) for over 30 leading carriers.

TRW Develops Scalable Low Cost Airbag Electronic Control Units for Emerging Markets

LIVONIA, Mich., May 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. subsidiary, TRW Automotive U.S. LLC, has developed a scalable airbag control unit (ACU) designed for the growing low-cost vehicle markets. The intelligent solution allows the ACU to be adapted within a platform to offer two options - standard and enhanced - for models sold within emerging territories and for those exported to developed markets.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010824/TRWLOGO ) (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080522/CLTH075 )

Ed Carpenter, vice president, TRW Electronics, said: "This scalable ACU allows cost driven manufacturers to equip their vehicles with safety electronics while maintaining their competitiveness, and offers emerging safety electronics markets the opportunity to fit their vehicles with advanced safety equipment. This flexibility is essential for OEMs looking for a single solution to satisfy both the emerging and export markets."

The standard system is configured for cost effective applications of one to four squibs with no satellite interface, but provides the flexibility to be used in an enhanced system, designed to handle additional capability requirements of up to eight squibs and four satellite interfaces. The standard and enhanced options can be offered within the same base unit.

TRW's standard ACU supports front and side crash detection with the additional option of rear crash detection and can support the interface of up to four satellite sensor modules or can be configured for no satellite interface.

The metal housing design of the standard ACU meets cost, packaging and reliability requirements while maintaining the mechanical performance necessary for reliable crash sensing.

TRW is leading the way in the performance/price ratio with this airbag controller, fulfilling the need for a cost effective ACU not only for value oriented manufacturers, but also for emerging crash sensor markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Boeing KC-767 Tanker: Capability Where it Counts

ST. LOUIS, May 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With advantages identified by the U.S. Air Force in the areas of mission capability, survivability, aerial refueling technology, operational utility and ability to respond to real-world mission scenarios, the Boeing KC-767 is the best tanker for the future conflicts anticipated by the U.S. Defense Department.

"U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates recently stated that the wars of the future will resemble the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Mark McGraw, vice president, Boeing Tanker Programs. "Therefore it follows that the KC-767 tanker is the ideal plane for future conflicts. It has the ability to operate out of smaller forward airfields to efficiently and effectively serve our warfighters, take advantage of existing infrastructure close to expected hot spots and do it all with a more capable, lower-cost, lower-risk, more survivable tanker."

Secretary Gates said in a speech earlier this month that, "the kind of capabilities we will most likely need in the years ahead will often resemble the kinds of capabilities we need today." He added that, "any major weapons program, in order to remain viable, will have to show some utility and relevance to the kind of irregular campaigns that ... are most likely to engage America's military in the coming decades."

A costlier, riskier tanker put forth by the team of Northrop Grumman and the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) was chosen by the Air Force Feb. 29 as the replacement for the aging fleet of medium-sized KC-135s that met U.S. military requirements through the Cold War, Vietnam and Desert Storm. The same aircraft are providing aerial refueling to American and allied forces today in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Air Force Request for Proposals seemed to call for a medium-sized tanker designed to meet the unique needs of today's expeditionary Air Force. During the evaluation of the two offerings, 98 positive discriminators, or strengths, were identified for the KC-767 compared to 30 for the Airbus A330-based plane.

"The Boeing KC-767 offered much more in terms of capability for bringing the right number of right-sized planes and the right amount of fuel to the fight," McGraw said. "The top 10 strengths of the KC-767 drive home the superiority of the Boeing plane for this mission."

According to the KC-X evaluation, top discriminators in the areas of capability, aerial refueling technology, real-world operations, survivability, operational utility and secondary mission capability include:

-- The ability to refuel multiple types of aircraft, including the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft -- Ability to isolate, transport and off-load multiple fuel types -- Less fuel burned, less foreign bases required and less sensitive to geo-political base denials in operational scenarios -- Fuel tank and ballistic threat protection -- Aerial refueling operator station -- Ability to carry higher weight cargo on the main deck -- Ability to carry hazardous material on the main deck -- Aeromedical crew displays and the ability to generate therapeutic patient oxygen -- Advanced communication and navigation capabilities and future growth potential

A unit of The Boeing Company, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems is one of the world's largest space and defense businesses specializing in innovative and capabilities-driven customer solutions. Headquartered in St. Louis, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems is a $32.1 billion business with 71,000 employees worldwide.

Comcast Colorado Presents 'Screen to Green' in Denver and Plans Local S2G TV Recycling Rally in June- Supporting sponsors include City and County of Denver and Planet Green, the first and only 24-hour eco-lifestyle television network -

DENVER, May 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Comcast Colorado today announced that it has joined Screen to Green, a cable industry initiative to educate and engage consumers about recycling of unused televisions to better the environment. Comcast will present Screen to Green in Denver to engage consumers via a local public education campaign about the dangers of TVs in landfills and hold an "S2G TV Recycling Rally" to recycle unused televisions on June 28, 2008. Comcast Colorado is the first cable market and company to join Screen to Green since the initiative was announced in March 2008.

The City and County of Denver as well as Planet Green, the first and only 24-hour eco-lifestyle television network dedicated to exploring what it means to be green, will support the Denver S2G TV Recycling Rally. Both the City and County of Denver and Planet Green are well suited to support the event as they are champions of consumer programs that encourage consumers to live a more sustainable lifestyle.

"As we continue to innovate and deliver advanced entertainment services such as VOD and HDTV, we want to partner with consumers to help them responsibly recycle their old technology when they embrace the new," said Scott Binder, senior vice president of Comcast Colorado. "We're proud to present Screen to Green as this initiative is a natural extension of our local efforts to implement programs and participate in tangible initiatives that make a positive impact on the environment."

Many consumers are unaware that electronic waste, including TVs, if improperly disposed, could become toxic waste. Electronics are full of toxic materials such as lead, mercury and beryllium and other elements that if improperly managed, could be harmful to people and the environment. When televisions and other e-waste are discarded into landfills, they may leach chemicals into our groundwater or pollute the air.

"We're pleased to partner with Comcast through Screen to Green to help our community properly recycle TVs. It's important to do all we can to keep this electronic waste from entering our landfills," said Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. "Recycling is one of the easiest ways each of us can play a role in protecting our environment and promoting sustainability."

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that between 1980 and 2005, 180 million electronics have accumulated in storage. In 2005, Americans tossed an estimated 1.5 million tons of computers, TVs, scanners, fax machines and cell phones into the trash contributing to the growing problem of e-waste in landfills.

Comcast Colorado's participation in Screen to Green will allow the company to responsibly recycle televisions and better the environment. Through recycling of TVs, valuable resources such as precious metals, plastics and glass can be extracted and reused. According to the U.S. EPA, reusing and recycling these materials from end-of-life electronics conserves natural resources and avoids air and water pollution as well as greenhouse gas emissions that are caused by manufacturing new products.

For the June 28 Screen to Green Denver TV Recycling Rally, responsible e-waste recyclers will be on hand to collect televisions and other electronics to ensure that all materials are responsibly handled and recycled domestically.

Additional information about the June 28th Denver S2G Recycling Rally will be forthcoming including location, time, recycling instructions and more.

NEW YORK, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Eleven-time NBA All Star and Boston Celtics power forward Kevin Garnett is the latest A-list celebrity to star in a new advertising campaign for Verizon FiOS services. Themed "This is FiOS; This is Big," the campaign showcases the groundbreaking services delivered over Verizon's advanced fiber-optic network straight to customers' homes. Created for Verizon by McCann Erickson, New York, the new ad launches Thursday (May 22).

The "This is FiOS; This is Big" ad campaign kicked off in February with a FiOS Internet spot featuring high-octane Hollywood film director Michael Bay. The newest ad starring Garnett is a 30-second television spot highlighting Verizon FiOS TV's innovative Home Media DVR, which gives customers the power to record videos on one television set, then view them on up to six other TV sets in their homes.

Garnett is regarded as one of the best all-around players in NBA history. His accomplishments include being voted Most Valuable Player of the 2003-2004 NBA season, and being named to 11 All-Star teams and nine All-NBA and All-Defensive teams. He is the all-time leader in NBA seasons played with averages of at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists per game.

"Kevin Garnett is the ultimate, game-changing NBA star, and FiOS TV is the ultimate, game-changing entertainment experience," said John Wimsatt, senior vice president of marketing for Verizon Telecom. "The combination of his larger-than-life talent, personality and achievements is a perfect match for the excitement that FiOS TV brings to home entertainment."

The new TV spot is set in a venerable Boston mansion that is decorated in a comically lavish style. Garnett towers over a slender Verizon technician who shows him how he can record videos in his family room, then watch them on other TV sets located throughout the house, including in a five-story stairwell; in a formal dining room (complete with a silver platter piled with a two-foot-high stack of gourmet hamburgers); in a massive library; and even on top of a grand piano.

Garnett, in keeping with the light-hearted tone of the spot, pokes fun at himself and at the cliche of the wealthy, technology-obsessed professional athlete. He proudly tries out the multiple-screen capabilities of the FiOS DVR on the big-screen TVs installed in his bathroom and his laundry room, and joins the technician to enjoy an action film in front of a huge fireplace with a roaring fire. The ad closes with the star-struck Verizon technician nervously trying to "fist-bump" Garnett.

(NOTE: A high-quality MPEG4 video of the new Verizon FiOS ad featuring Kevin Garnett is available for download at http://verizon.wieck.com/ .)

"Our Home Media DVR completely changes the way families enjoy TV," said Wimsatt. "Most cable company DVRs only let you record and watch content in one room, so the shows you most want to see are locked in one room, and so are you. The FiOS TV Home Media DVR frees family members to watch recorded programming and enjoy the stunning picture quality of FiOS TV whenever and wherever they want, in any room in the house -- with just one DVR. You can even start watching a show in one room and finish it in another."

The Home Media DVR also gives users the ability to create picture slideshows and music playlists on their PCs and then transfer them to their home entertainment systems so they can be enjoyed on TV.

Capabilities of the Home Media DVR, delivered to FiOS TV customers over the nation's most advanced, fiber-optic network, straight to their homes, include:

-- Record favorite standard-definition shows and have the freedom to view them anytime on up to seven TVs in the home, not just the one the DVR is hooked up to. -- Watch up to three separately recorded shows on up to three TVs, simultaneously. -- Record two programs at once while watching live TV. -- Pause and rewind live TV; pause, rewind and fast-forward recorded shows. -- Pause a recorded show in one room then finish viewing it in another. -- Enjoy on your TV content that is stored on your PC, such as slide shows and music. -- Block access to content with easy-to-use parental controls. -- Save money by using one DVR to record content that can be enjoyed on every TV in the home.

Verizon's all-digital FiOS TV service is available to more than 6.5 million homes in 13 states: California, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Virginia. In the little more than two years since the service first launched, the company has signed up more than 1.2 million FiOS TV customers who enjoy hundreds of digital video and music channels, high-definition linear and on-demand programming, the nation's largest collection of video-on-demand content, a robust interactive media guide, and other advanced features.

Micrel lance une solution rapide et puissante avec la commercialisation du circuit intégré à correction d'effet d'obliquité, le plus performant du secteur

    SAN JOSE, Californie, May 22 /PRNewswire/ --

    A. O. Smith Receives C-TPAT Tier III, Highest Security Status for Importing Companies

MILWAUKEE, May 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The U. S. Customs and Border Protection has given A. O. Smith Corporation Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) Tier III status, the highest status offered to an importing company.

C-TPAT Tier III is given to a limited number of companies that have comprehensive programs in place to secure their facilities and supply chain from terrorists, smuggling, and narcotics. A company must pass a thorough inspection by Customs and Border Protection and be recommended to C-TPAT Director Bradd Skinner to achieve Tier III status.

The Customs and Border Protection granted Tier III status to 17 companies in 2007. There are approximately 6,000 importing companies in the U. S.

"A. O. Smith was one of the first companies to voluntarily participate in the C-TPAT program when it began," Paul W. Jones, chairman and chief executive officer of A. O. Smith Corporation. "We believe that maintaining secure operations worldwide is important to the safety of our employees and contributes to the success of our business."

    A. O. Smith's U. S. and Mexican facilities were C-TPAT validated in May, July, and December 2007, an action that led the way to the company earning Tier III status. During the validation process, CBP representatives identified 36 best practices at the company. Among those best practices:

    -- Top management at the corporation demonstrated its support of the C-TPAT program and encouraged the formation of C-TPAT compliance teams at all company facilities worldwide; -- The company provides all employees worldwide with copies of its Guiding Principles to Ethical Conduct and requires employees to complete online ethics training programs; -- Representatives from the company visit all business partners' facilities periodically to audit their security practices. If issues are found during the verification audits, the suppliers are required to submit a written corrective action plan. A. O. Smith monitors compliance with these plans and results attained; -- Members of A. O. Smith's compliance group provide C-TPAT training to suppliers during the company's annual supplier summits; -- The company has a documented tractor, trailer, container inspection process and trains its personnel in how to inspect incoming and outgoing shipments;

In addition, all A. O. Smith facilities in Mexico have secure perimeters and procedures to inspect all vehicles and visitors who come to the plants.

"The CBP representatives found that all of our facilities had similar best practices when they conducted the validation audits in 2007," Kathleen Neal, director-trade compliance for A. O. Smith, said. "Consistency counts when you are being considered for Tier III status."

Tier III status will result in significantly fewer external agency inspections for A. O. Smith shipments crossing the border between Mexico and the U. S. as well as fewer external agency inspections of overseas shipments.

"In order to maintain our Tier III benefits, we must continue to maintain and improve our supply chain security practices," Neal said.

    A. O. Smith Corporation, with 2007 sales of $2.3 billion, is a global leader applying innovative technology and energy-efficient solutions to products marketed worldwide. The company is one of the world's leading manufacturers of residential and commercial water heating equipment, offering a comprehensive product line featuring the best-known brands in North America and China. A. O. Smith is also one of the largest manufacturers of electric motors for residential and commercial applications in North America.
