Demand Climbs for Wireless Voice, Multimedia and Internet Access in CaliforniaVerizon Wireless adds a new cell site in Calexico to stay ahead of the growth
IRVINE, Calif., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Wireless users in more California locations are now experiencing expanded voice and data coverage thanks to the addition of a new cell site from Verizon Wireless, the carrier with the highest customer loyalty.
The new site improves overall coverage and call capacity for customers who travel along Highway 98 from Calexico to Interstate 8.
The recent expansion adds to Verizon Wireless' $4.6 billion dollar investment in California last year. Nationwide the company has invested nearly $45 billion since it was formed -- $5.5 billion on average every year -- to increase the coverage and capacity of its national wireless network and to add services like BroadbandAccess, V CAST (V CAST markets only), VZ Navigator(SM) and many more.
Verizon Wireless is the most widely used brand of service in wireless. The company now serves more than 67.2 million customers nationwide. In the first quarter of 2008, the company delivered nearly 58 billion text messages and completed 133 million downloads of music, videos, games, ringtones, and exclusive content, including 34.6 million video and music downloads.
"Our network expansion in California is just another example of how we invest our resources to stay ahead of demand and to make sure that our customers enjoy a superior wireless experience," said John Palmer, regional president of Verizon Wireless.
"This consistent investment is a key reason Verizon Wireless has ranked first in customer loyalty in the industry in each of the last 14 quarters.*"
Other examples of company leadership include being first to offer nationwide plans with unlimited calling and the only provider to offer a 30- day network "Test Drive" pledge that pays for calls if a customer isn't satisfied and switches to another carrier.
Verizon Wireless' reputation as the nation's most reliable wireless network is supported by industry-leading redundancy and maintenance measures. This has proven particularly valuable during natural disasters and other emergencies across the country. Standard Verizon Wireless network-reliability features include battery back-up power at all facilities as well as generators installed at all switching facilities and many cell site locations.

ATK Ultraflex Solar Arrays Deploy and Provide Critical Power to the Mars Phoenix LanderATK Solar Arrays, Thermal Technology, Diaphragm Tank and CoilABLE Boom Assist the Mars Phoenix Mission
MINNEAPOLIS, May 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Alliant Techsystems announces that the Ultraflex Solar Arrays deployed and now provide power to the Mars Phoenix Lander. This is the first flight for this unique solar array technology developed by ATK's Goleta, California facility. Each Ultraflex array unfolded like an oriental fan into a circular shape 2.1 meters in diameter and will generate 770 watts of power from sunlight at the distance Earth is from the sun. Since Mars is approximately 1.5 times farther from the sun, the solar arrays will produce less than half the power possible on Earth.
Launched in August 2007, the Phoenix Mars Mission is the first in NASA's Scout Program. Phoenix is designed to study the history of water and habitability potential in the Martian arctic's ice-rich soil.
Also on board the Phoenix Lander is a CoilABLE boom which will deploy the Surface Stereo Imager camera. At release, strain energy stored in the stowed, coiled boom structure lifts the camera payload, weighing 4.5 times the weight of the boom, to a height about 27 inches above the lander deck. The deployed structure is a straight, three-sided truss capable of supporting the camera even if the lander is tilted on a 21 degree slope after landing. This boom design shares heritage with the boom which deployed a similar camera on the Mars Pathfinder lander in 1997.
In addition ATK produced both a Dual Bore Heat Pipe Assembly and a diaphragm tank to support the Phoenix Mars Lander Program. The Dual Bore Heat Pipe contained complex mechanical bending configurations and efficient heat transport and conductance capability that supported the heat removal from the Cruise Stage electronics to the Cruise Stage radiator. ATK is proud to supply so many critical pieces of this important NASA mission.

CCID Consulting: Lenovo Has the Largest Sales Volume in Mobile Hard Disk Market in 2008Q1
BEIJING, May 26 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (Hong Kong Stock Exchange: HK08235), recently released its article on China's mobile hard disk market in 2008Q1.
CCID Consulting's data shows that the sales volume of China's brand mobile hard disk market reaches 506,900 sets in 2008Q1, up 28.9% over 2007Q1. The growth rate is lower than the growth rate in 2007. CCID Consulting considers that affected by the decrease of industrial purchase and fake products, the mobile hard disk market's growth slows down.
CCID Consulting considers there are three characteristics in mobile hard disk market in 2008Q1:
Seasonable Sale Leads the Change of the Sales Volume in Mobile Hard Disk Market
Because industrial users have a large share in mobile hard disk market, their seasonable purchases have great effect to the sales volume. The first quarter is the traditional slack season. There are a few industrial purchases during the Spring Festival, which results in the shipments' shipment.
However, with mobile hard disk's storage medium's prominent day by day and the individual consumers' demands' increase, individual user accounts large share in mobile storage field. CCID Consulting's data shows the market share of individual users accounts for 47.7% of the total mobile hard disk market in 2007; the market share has increased to 49.3% in 2008Q1. With the increase of individual users' share, mobile hard disk market will gradually weaken seasonable sale, the market will have balanced sales in whole year.
Seesaw Battle between Assembly Disks and Brand Market Upgrades
Because of rapid upgrade in capacity, 160G products become the mainstream, with profit increases a little, which results in the heating up of battle between assembly disks and brand market. Assembly disks market enlarges the price distance with brand market.
Currently, the increase of sales volume of assembly disks comes from individual user market. Thus, mobile storage manufacturers should pay more attention to strengthen propaganda and strengthen individual users' recognition to mobile hard disk and brand.
The Segment of Consumer Group Intensifies; Lenovo Drives the Development of Individual Market, Aigo Keeps the Advantage in Industrial Users Market
CCID Consulting's data shows that Lenovo and Aigo are the first and second manufacturers in 2008Q1. Lenovo pays great effort in the individual user market; while Aigo has advantage over industrial user market.

After Lenovo becomes the largest manufacturer in 2007, Lenovo still pays more attention to market: firstly, Lenovo still strengthens its propaganda in this field and launches products with Olympic features; secondly, Lenovo uses cost advantage so as to improve products' cost performance; thirdly, Lenovo uses channel advantage to improve market distribution rate. Lenovo's these actions improve its market share and increase mobile hard disk's proportion in individual consumer terminal application, which play important role in the development of mobile storage industry.
Another mobile storage giant -- Aigo continues to maintain its advantage in industrial market. Meanwhile, Aigo pays attention to industrial public relations, technical breakthrough and professional manufacturing so as to cater for industrial users' favor.

STMicroelectronics Introduces First 65nm SPEAr(R) Customizable Chip for Computer Peripherals ApplicationsCost efficiency, computing power and customizability for various embedded applications
GENEVA, May 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- STMicroelectronics , a world leader in system-on-chip technology, today announced a new member of its SPEAr(R) family of configurable System on-Chip ICs. Manufactured in state-of-the-art low-power 65nm process technology, the new SPEAr Basic device addresses a wide variety of embedded applications, including entry-level printers, fax machines, digital photo frames, Voice-over-IP and other equipment.
ST's SPEAr (Structured Processor Enhanced Architecture) concept uniquely combines cost savings and shorter time-to-market of open-market standard products with the flexibility of application-specific ICs in optimizing system performance. Transfer of the SPEAr family to 65nm process technology yields increased density, performance and power-reduction features in new SPEAr devices.
ST's newest configurable SoC integrates an advanced ARM926EJ-S processor core with two 16k memory caches, running at 333MHz, for data and instructions and up to 300,000 gates (ASIC-equivalent) of embedded configurable logic.
The new SPEAr Basic provides memory interfaces supporting LP-DDR and DDR2 memories and a large connectivity-IP (intellectual property) portfolio, including Fast-IrDA interface, Ethernet MAC, three USB 2.0 ports with embedded PHYs, UART, SPI, I2C, up to 102 fully programmable GPIOs and a total of 72 Kbytes of SRAM and 32 Kbytes of Boot ROM.
Best-in-class printing performance is enabled through a full set of image-pipeline accelerators, from color-space conversion to raster-file generation, a rotation engine, a hardware JPEG codec, an LCD controller (up to 1024x768, 24-bits per pixel) and a SDIO/MM card interface.
Additional features include a 10-bit analog-to-digital converter, a crypto accelerator based on ST's proprietary C3 IP, a Flexible Static Memory controller (NOR/NAND Flash and SRAM), TDM (Time-Division Multiplexing) and SLIC (Serial Link and Interrupt) controllers and a camera interface, providing unprecedented scale of integration and flexibility.
SPEAr Basic's software-configurable power-saving modes address most recent ecological and power-sensitive specifications. The device supports most popular embedded operating systems including Linux, VxWorks, ThreadX and Windows CE.
The SPEAr Basic comes complete with an evaluation board that allows quick and easy setup, design and testing of the devices. Using the SPEAr Plus600 Development kit and its external FPGA, which mirrors the SoC's internal configurable logic block, designers can proceed with software and hardware development without waiting for final validation. Once the customer's SoC passes the functional qualification, full production can typically ramp up in eight to ten weeks' time from the final RTL availability.
"Leveraging ST's market-leading configurable SoC architecture, the SPEAr Basic provides a seamless cost-reduction path for applications where price/performance is key," said Loris Valenti, General Manager of ST's Computer Systems Division, Computer Peripherals Group. "The new SPEAr device speeds the adoption of customized 65nm IC solutions with an ASIC-like flexibility, at a fraction of the development time and cost required by a full-custom design approach. In addition, customers can easily re-use software developed for previous SPEAr family members. All this makes the SPEAr Basic the best time-to-market solution for a variety of slots, with no compromise in features and performance."
Samples are available now, with volume production set to start by the end of Q3 2008. The SPEAr Basic is priced at $6, in quantities above 20,000 pieces.

SK Energy is the first customer in Asia to use Motorola's intrinsically safe ATEX terminal.
SK Energy began implementation of the new system in September 2007. Once it is fully deployed, SK Energy employees will have access to the latest digital TRS (Trunked Radio System), which is more spectrum-efficient compared to the existing analogue communications. They will also be able to design and optimize the radio communications network to improve operational efficiency and productivity using cutting-edge digital functions.
The MTP850Ex is certified under the ATEX and IECEx international certification schemes for protection against the most explosive gas and dust clouds. Combined with an uncompromising mix of safety features, smart ergonomics and fail-safe robust operation, the terminal allows SK Energy employees to benefit from a wide range of communications features in a hazardous environment. For example, if the connection to the Main Switch Office (MSO) is broken, users are still able to communicate with the base station without any interruption.
In addition, when there is a request for help or an emergency call, the location of users can be tracked immediately with the help of the terminal's integrated GPS receiver. The MTP850Ex also has a built-in "Man Down" alert feature that triggers an emergency procedure when the carrier of the radio remains motionless for a set period or suffers a fall.
With one watt audio output power, the terminal delivers best-in-class audio performance in the typically noisy environments where specialist users operate. In addition to voice communications, the MTP850Ex features an integrated WAP browser and supports simultaneous Short Data Service (SDS) and Multi-Slot packet data (MSPD) services that enable rapid access to critical information in the field.
Equipped with a simplified keypad with a large button surface, the terminal is easy to use with gloves. Combined with the large scalable display fonts and icons, the MTP850Ex facilitates operation in difficult environments with limited visibility. With a full range of supporting ATEX certified accessories, the MTP850Ex can be customized to meet requirements of different operating environments.
On the Scalable Dimetra IP solution, it can be housed in a single rack and is scalable to meet the size of the project. Compact, highly portable and easily deployable, it is an ideal solution to meet the growing demand for flexible and robust communications in small to medium-sized enterprises or in emergency deployment.
"Our decision to adopt IP-based scalable TETRA system was motivated by an increasing need for data communications to improve voice communications quality and overall operational efficiency," said Mr Jin-Young Park, Senior Manager, IT Planning Division, SK Energy. "Most of all, we selected Motorola's TETRA system and explosion-proof radio for safe and reliable communications in potentially explosive environments such as oil and petrochemical plants."
Kun-Sang Choi, Interim president of Motorola Korea said: "This contract win from SK Energy following the win from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering last year, demonstrates that Motorola's quality two-way radio products are also needed in the enterprise market. Motorola is committed to delivering value-added solutions to enterprise users in shipbuilding, heavy industries and petrochemical markets to maximize their productivity and operational efficiency while minimizing their overall investment cost. "
Motorola aims to deliver intuitive technology that is second nature to users, so they have the peace of mind to focus on their mission, not on the technology. The MTP850Ex is a strong testament to Motorola's design-for-use ethos, which is to work hand-in-hand with our customers to create highly intuitive products to address the unique requirements of mission-critical environments.

Motorola Introduces the Smallest TETRA RadioThe radio in thin form factor enables high performance and secure communications in covert operations
HONG KONG, May 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- TETRA WORLD CONGRESS -- 26 May 2008 -- Motorola, Inc. today announced the introduction of the smallest body-worn TETRA Covert Radio, the TCR1000, that provides fully featured TETRA radio functions to users in covert operations. The new radio in thin form factor can easily be concealed in light clothing and ensures secure communications with encryption features that improve operational effectiveness in the field.
The TCR1000 weighs less than 180 grams and its small, light-weight design helps officers to disguise their equipment during covert operations, allowing them to blend into the crowd. While compact in design, the TCR1000 performs to the same high standards as mainstream Motorola TETRA terminals and offers excellent functionality including options for integrated GPS and end-to-end encryption. It incorporates many innovative features to address the unique requirements of covert radios such as discrete audio, radio control and long battery lifetime.
In terms of enhanced usability, the control features of the TCR1000 have been designed for covert operations, such as using audio tones to identify talk group number to enable audio-only recognition of talk group selection. The TCR1000 is controllable from a remote unit that provides greater flexibility to users in their operations.
On functionality, the TCR1000 has an integrated GPS to locate resources as well as users who are in need of assistance. The radio also has an extended battery pack option which can easily extend users' surveillance periods.
On security features, the TCR1000 is equipped with all of the encryption features of Motorola's TETRA radios and infrastructure portfolio.
