Students Go Digital and Improve Their Writing Skills with Pearson's WriteToLearnStudents, Teacher say WriteToLearn's personalized, immediate feedback helps improve reading comprehension, writing

NEW YORK, May 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In today's digital world, students use text messages and email to communicate, with almost 40 percent even using common abbreviations like LOL, TTYL and BRB in their school assignments, according to a recent report. But, is the decline of writing an unintended consequence? The results of the recent Nation's Report Card writing test found that only one-third of 8th graders scored proficient, and only 25 percent of high school seniors were considered proficient.

Some teachers say that keeping today's digital students engaged in learning, especially struggling learners, requires a different approach than years past. For teachers like Mae Guerra at Denver's Valverde Elementary School, who says reading and writing was a huge challenge for her students just a few months ago, the digital approach of Pearson's WriteToLearn has helped her students find success.

"It's been amazing, at the beginning of the school year a lot of students couldn't complete a sentence."

As the linked video shows (http://www.pearsoned.com/ednews/may08pages/writetolearn.htm), Guerra combines classroom teaching with the web-based, personalized approach of WriteToLearn. Students log onto the Internet, input their work and watch as the learning tool analyzes their writing and measures progress.

Researchers from Pearson Knowledge Technologies and the University of Colorado spent three years creating WriteToLearn. Immediate feedback is the key: The software gives students immediate feedback on their writing, rather than waiting for the teacher to provide feedback to dozens of students.

Since using WriteToLearn, Guerra's students have made tremendous progress, with scores on district benchmark tests rising from unsatisfactory to proficient. Guerra says it's because her students are motivated using the digital tool's personalized learning approach, which is almost like a game to the students.

"The practice they get ... is giving them confidence, the practice they need to write well-organized, thought-out summaries that really do reflect what they read. So, they are not only gaining writing skills, but comprehension skills when they read. So everything is going up in my class," Guerra says.

WriteToLearn's personalized, immediate-feedback approach also helps teachers to be more efficient in the classroom, since the time that was once spent editing writing assignments can be spent on lesson planning or other tasks. Says Guerra: "It gives me more time to work with students who are having a hard time, it enables me to work one on one with those English language learners who have a hard time initially getting started with their writing ... "

Verizon Expands Enhanced Sign Language Service to Deaf or Hearing-Impaired Customers in Massachusetts, New York and Rhode IslandBroadband Video Link Enables Customers to Communicate Directly With Verizon Representatives Proficient in American Sign Language

NEW YORK, May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon customers in three Northeast states who are deaf or hearing impaired can now use American Sign Language and videophones to communicate directly with the company about service-related issues.

Verizon's Center for Customers with Disabilities first made this customer service support available last year in Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. Verizon has since expanded the support to Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island, enabling deaf or hearing-impaired customers in those states to communicate directly via videophone with a representative in the Verizon center who is proficient in using American Sign Language (ASL) to handle orders, change services or answer questions.

(Note: For a video demonstration and recorded comments from Claude Stout, executive director of Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Inc. (TDI), a national consumer advocacy organization based in Silver Spring, Md., log on to http://newscenter.verizon.com/kit/broadband-video-link/).

"Our deaf or hearing-impaired customers love this service because it gives them an avenue to communicate directly with us and not have to call using an interpreter or a relay service," said Kimberly Grenda, an American Sign Language service representative in the Verizon Center for Customers with Disabilities. "The expansion of customer service support in ASL via videophone will allow Verizon to better connect to our customers."

Most video services for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing involve an interpreter who relays messages between those individuals and the hearing parties they communicate with. A videophone with a high-speed Internet connection and a monitor, used either one-on-one or with an interpreter, is preferred by many American Sign Language users when they want to communicate by telephone.

Heidi Reed, commissioner of the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH), said, "MCDHH commends this enhancement to Verizon's customer services for our many constituents who use American Sign Language. This addition in service delivery reflects Verizon's leadership role in meeting the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing customers. All of us at MCDHH look forward to continued excellence in communication access services for residents of Massachusetts."

People can have a video conversation in ASL with a videophone -- a set-top box with either a built-in camera connected to a broadband router, a free-standing desk unit with a small screen or a Web cam supported by a computer and appropriate software. Each equipment option requires a high-speed Internet connection to receive good picture quality; lower-bandwidth services will result in pixilation and low frame rates on most products.

ASL is a unique language that incorporates hand gestures and facial expressions, and provides a more expressive and fulfilling telecommunications experience than either TTY (teletype) equipment or relay services.

"Due to the widespread availability and affordability of broadband, more and more deaf or hard-of-hearing consumers have a videophone," said Grenda. "We believe the videophone option gives customers a simpler, more user-friendly way to interact with Verizon for their telecommunications needs."

Verizon customer service representatives can recommend services and equipment that make communications easier for people with various disabilities. For example, Verizon offers phones that have photos on the buttons to help people with cognitive difficulties, and phones that operate by remote control for people with physical disabilities.

Some customers with disabilities can get an exemption from charges for calls made to 411 or for operator-assisted calls. Verizon can provide its bill statements in large print or Braille at no extra charge. The company also produces a quarterly newsletter (http://www.verizon.com/forwardaccess ; please enter a phone number or zip code to access the file) filled with news and information for its customers with disabilities.

While Verizon does not currently sell videophones, the center supports sales of other equipment to help people with disabilities. (NOTE: See accompanying list of available equipment.)

The Verizon Center for Customers with Disabilities, which is celebrating its 16th anniversary this year, provides customer support to people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, blind, or have vision, mobility, speech or cognitive disabilities. There are two such centers, one in Marlboro, Mass., the other in Oxnard, Calif.

When the Marlboro center opened in 1992, its staff of six representatives handled approximately 4,000 calls a year. Today, the staff has grown to more than 100 representatives who now handle more than 700,000 calls annually.

For more information about the Verizon Center for Customers with Disabilities, consumers can call 1-800-974-6006 (voice/TTY). Consumers needing customer service support can call via videophone at either 1-800-974-6006 or 1-888-974-6006.

    About Videophone Use

Many deaf or heard-of-hearing customers are already very familiar with videophones, using them to work with video relay services to communicate with hearing persons with the help of an interpreter who translates messages to and from American Sign Language (ASL), or for direct communication with others who know and use ASL. Some computers equipped with the proper software and Web cameras can be used, as well. Videophones can be hooked up either to a regular TV or to a PC monitor (http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=293) or can be desktop units complete with a small screen (http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=302).

For effective video conferencing communication at good frame rates, customers need a high-speed line with a downstream speed of at least 256 kilobits per second or higher. Verizon's High Speed Internet services start at speeds of up to 768 Kbps and range up to 50 Mbps on FiOS Internet connections.

Phones are simply dialed as usual, though with some equipment setups the phone number dialed actually represents a computer IP address

Customers have options regarding the hardware they use. Phones made by companies like D-Link can be purchased for about $150 to about $300 depending on the model and connection type. But other models by other makers are available free to users of various video relay services, which are publicly funded under Federal Communication Commission requirements.

1er Trimestre 2008: Triple réussite pour Golog

    PARIS, May 29 /PRNewswire/ --

Woodbridge, Connecticut Residents to Benefit from Verizon Wireless Network ExpansionInvesting to Stay Ahead of Growing Demand for Wireless Voice, Multimedia and Internet Access

WOODBRIDGE, Conn., May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents in New Haven County, Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site. The new site increases wireless voice and data coverage and capacity along Amity Road and the Wilbur Cross Parkway.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $45 billion since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services like BroadbandAccess and V CAST. Regionally the company has invested nearly $2.2 billion into its New England network, including over $292 million in 2007 alone. As a result of these investments, every Verizon Wireless cell site in New England offers wireless broadband connectivity.

BroadbandAccess offers computer users the nation's most reliable high-speed wireless mobile broadband network, operating at average upload speeds between 500 and 800 kbps, and download speeds between 600 kbps and 1.4 mbps over Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess with EV-DO Revision A network. V CAST brings video clips of TV shows, music on demand and other multimedia services to wireless phones.

Strong demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the first quarter of 2008 as the company added 1.5 million net new customers and, for the fourteenth consecutive quarter, reported the lowest customer turnover (highest customer loyalty) rate in the wireless industry.

The company's 'nation's most reliable wireless network' reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country who inspired the "can you hear me now" national advertising campaign. Nationally, these test men and women drive nearly 100 specially equipped vehicles almost 1,000,000 miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high- population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts, to confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than three million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

    About Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless operates the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, serving 67.2 million customers. Vitaliy Savelyev, Chairman of the Board of Directors of MTS, commented: "One cannot argue with Leonid's record of success in his stewardship of MTS, as his influence is evident everywhere within the organization. We are grateful for his role in shaping the business that we have, yet we have full confidence in Mikhail's ability to carry forward Leonid's legacy of growth and development at MTS. STMicroelectronics to Offer Chinese Universities Access to Leading-Edge CMOS Processes Through CMPInitiative aims at strengthening ST's links with Chinese education and research communities and developing innovative design capabilities by allowing organizations to obtain advanced ICs in quantities and at costs compatible with academic budgets

SHANGHAI, China, May 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- STMicroelectronics , one of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturers, and CMP (Circuits Multi Projects(R)), a leading broker in ICs, today announced that the two companies are offering Chinese universities access to STMicroelectronics' most advanced CMOS processes for academic and research purposes.

Based on the success of this offering with European and North American universities, with more than 100 universities having now received design rules and design kits for ST's 65nm bulk CMOS process, and several hundreds of designs in various technologies, ST and CMP are putting in place the infrastructure required to duplicate this success in China. In 2007, approximately 180 circuit designs from European and North American universities, in both 90nm and 65nm technologies, were put through ST's silicon process for various applications, including 3G wireless, telecom, RF and power management.

Key elements of the initiative are that ST will ensure the certification of the local partners and the fabrication of the ICs designed by the universities, while CMP will be the interface for commercial and technical aspects, from the distribution and support of the CAD software tools and design kits, up to the delivery of the samples. This mechanism will allow Chinese research organizations to obtain small quantities of advanced ICs, typically a few tens of units, at an attractive cost compatible with an academic budget. The availability of real silicon to Chinese education and research communities will enable them to validate design ideas and increase their design skills and capabilities. Additionally, it will enable them to promote and sell validated IP and garner opportunities for the commercialization of designs.

The ST process technologies available via CMP include 120nm, 90nm and 65nm CMOS technologies, with multiple transistor flavors from ultra-low leakage to high-speed and complete standard cells and I/Os libraries. The offering will be extended in the future to more technologies and options.

ST has a long history of working with universities and academia across the world through joint IC design projects and lab sponsorship. In China, ST has development projects currently ongoing with TsinHua University, TongJi University and ICT. The access to ST's advanced processes, via CMP, will boost the design and engineering capabilities in China -- a key market worldwide for semiconductors and increasingly a focal point for R&D, in addition to the availability of a rich pool of talent for advanced IC design.

According to Bernard Courtois, Director of CMP, there has been sharp growth in the number of advanced CMOS designs produced via CMP's services in recent years. For example, in 2007, the total number of circuits designed in 90nm CMOS increased by almost 100%, with 91 circuits designed in 2007 compared to 57 in 2006 and 32 in 2005, and most of the top universities are now preparing designs in 65nm.

"ST believes that it is increasingly important that university students and researchers worldwide have access to the most advanced technologies for the future benefit of the semiconductor industry, in addition to reinforcing opportunities for academic and research communities," said Laurent Perier, Director, China IC Design Centers, STMicroelectronics. "Ensuring that Chinese universities have access to our leading-edge technologies is testimony of our commitment to work with Chinese partners in their path towards innovation."

HOPKINTON, Mass., May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- EMC Corporation , the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, announced today that Coupons, Inc.'s information infrastructure reliably and securely supports millions of daily Microsoft SQL Server database transactions for its online, printable coupon business at the company's new datacenter.

"Our business has grown rapidly," said Ravi Keswani, Vice President of Engineering for Coupons, Inc. "Last year alone, our platform delivered consumer savings worth over $250 million on over $1 billion worth of products, driving a print volume increase in excess of 700%. Our information infrastructure needed to be simple and straightforward for our end users, while supporting our complex and highly transactional, proprietary system."

Coupons, Inc., the global leader in printable coupon solutions, helps premier consumer brands and retailers, such as Johnson & Johnson, General Mills and Kraft Foods, reach consumers on thousands of Web sites, in over 10 countries, with the most flexible, effective and secure alternative to offline-delivered coupons. "During our evaluation process, EMC put the best people forward and invested a tremendous amount of time and resources to demonstrate how their technologies would best address our demanding transactional, volume and performance requirements."

Following its extensive evaluation process, Coupons, Inc. chose an EMC CLARiiON(R) CX3 networked storage system to provide the high-performance, high-capacity and superior level of protection needed to meet the company's demanding workload, reliability and scalability requirements. The CLARiiON system also includes a comprehensive set of built-in features that can help CLARiiON customers more effectively control access to their systems and better secure information. As a result, the EMC information infrastructure optimizes the consumer experience by providing the storage space and processing power to support the company's rapidly increasing number of simultaneous print sessions and coupons printed per session.

"We weren't just looking for a storage area network, we were looking for a Microsoft SQL Server specific solution," said Keswani. "Not only were they willing to partner with us, but EMC surpassed the competition with its suite of SQL management tools and services. Today, EMC is tightly integrated with Microsoft SQL in 100% of our business critical transaction systems, spinning on EMC CLARiiON."

Digital Watermarking Alliance Endorses Privacy Principles Established by Center for Democracy & Technology

WASHINGTON, May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Digital Watermarking Alliance (DWA), an international group of industry leading companies involved in commercializing digital watermarking solutions, announced its endorsement of the Privacy Principles for Digital Watermarking issued today by the Center for Democracy & Technology (http://cdt.org/press/20080529press.php). Digital watermarking is being widely adopted to support new entertainment experiences for consumers, enable new content distribution methods, communicate copyright information, monitor broadcasts and Internet traffic, enhance security of documents, protect brands, and identify specific copies of media.

Even though billions of digitally watermarked objects have been successfully deployed without any known privacy issues, and only a very small subset of watermarking applications have any potential bearing on privacy, the DWA believes that by proactively embracing best practices as recommended by the CDT, potential privacy issues can be effectively addressed prior to new solutions being implemented. This will ease the way for broad industry-wide adoption, enable new media distribution models, and enhance access to valuable content for consumers.

The DWA also announced it will undertake outreach efforts to ensure digital watermarking applications across all forms of media content are designed with privacy principles in mind, and will continue to advocate for awareness within the industry of the need for strong privacy stewardship in the distribution of digital content.

"Digital watermarking has enjoyed broad adoption across many segments of industry and government, and in areas where interoperability is necessary and privacy needs to be safeguarded, we believe watermarking is an ideal solution," said Reed Stager, chairman of the Digital Watermarking Alliance. "The combination of digitally watermarked content and respect for consumer privacy will further broaden adoption and unleash new distribution models. We applaud the Center for Democracy & Technology's focus on digital watermarking and its efforts to gather input from a broad array of stakeholders in developing its recommended best practices."

    About Digital Watermarking

Digital watermarking is the process by which identifying data is woven into media content, giving it a unique, digital identity. Imperceptible to the human senses yet easily recognized by special software detectors, a digital watermark remains constant even through recording, manipulation and editing, compression and decompression, encryption, decryption and broadcast -- without affecting the quality of the content. Digital watermarks can identify copyrighted content and associated rights, during and after distribution, to determine copyright ownership and enable rights management policy while enabling innovative new content distribution and usage models. Today, digital watermarks are broadly deployed with tens of billions of watermarked objects and hundreds of millions of watermark detectors in the market, supporting various commercial and government applications. A recent MultiMedia Intelligence study identified digital watermarking as part of a key growth market that could surpass $500 million by 2012(1).

Diebold Designs Integrated Security System Linking Peugeot's UK Subsidiary Headquarters with Multiple SitesDiebold designs versatile system meeting automaker's corporate standards

NORTH CANTON, Ohio, May 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Diebold, Incorporated , the global leader in integrated security solutions, facilitated the roll-out of automaker Peugeot SA's corporate security solution to integrate the security systems of the newly constructed headquarters and Technical Training Center of Peugeot Citroen Automobiles UK Ltd, Peugeot's UK subsidiary in Coventry, England, with multiple sites across France. Peugeot Citroen Automobiles UK Ltd's goal was to migrate its entire network of operations from stand-alone security systems to a 24/7 security solution that could be monitored from the headquarters' control room and other strategic locations within the new facility.

Diebold was recommended to Peugeot by GE as a preferred business partner to custom design a security system that could integrate with Peugeot's corporate security solution. The system also had to be compatible with GE technology, which comprised some of the core systems used in Peugeot's corporate security infrastructure, such as access control and video recording. The original Coventry facility was equipped with only limited security technology including access control, intruder alarms and CCTV, but the new facility required more stringent security measures. With crime rates on the rise, protecting employees, property and other assets was paramount. Additionally, with increasingly tough competition between automakers, it was essential for Peugeot to secure automobile design information, including new product details, and to prevent new models from being viewed pre-launch.

The new facility also posed greater logistical challenges than the old structure. Peugeot's new headquarters and Technical Training Center were constructed on opposite sides of a public roadway and connected via a tunnel. The campus featured large parking areas for both buildings as well as delivery zones for parts delivery 24/7 to a storage warehouse. The security system had to accommodate employee foot traffic around the site as well as provide a remote security solution for after-hours parts deliveries. It was also required to tie easily into Peugeot's existing sites in France.

To comply with Peugeot's corporate standards, Diebold designed a versatile security system that provided seamless integration into the company's regional server-system, managed and maintained by Peugeot's French partner Thales. Diebold designed the system to provide the appropriate functionality to meet the client's approved standards and could be validated to run on Peugeot's corporate network, while supporting a consistent software platform. The system included such technologies as access control, building intruder detection, CCTV, gates and barriers, blockers and turnstiles, a two-way intercom system and perimeter fence detection. Diebold also provided fabrication, installation, commission, training, project management and on-going system maintenance.

"Peugeot has long endeavored to forge technologically innovative partnerships with end-to-end providers such as Diebold," said David Metcalfe, Manager Facilities and Safety, Peugeot Automobiles UK Ltd. "GE recommended Diebold to design a security system compatible with our existing solution because of Diebold's proven track record in the delivery and support of custom-designed systems."

Peugeot, and parent company PSA Peugeot Citroen, is one of Coventry's largest employers, employing over 2,000 people at two locations. Peugeot is committed to the region and to securing its employees and assets, which provide vital contributions to the area's economy. Moreover, the security of its facilities in France was essential to meeting the company's aggressive goal to become the most competitive car manufacturer in Europe by 2015.

"Our goal is to build customized solutions for our customers that meet their unique business objectives and ultimately enhance security for both assets and people," said Dennis M. Moriarty, senior vice president, Global Security Division, Diebold. "This partnership enabled our technicians to provide the physical, logical and electronic security expertise to ensure Peugeot had unabridged access to the many options available for securing its assets and protecting its investments across all its sites."

Green Bay Diocese Looks to Microsoft Dynamics NAV to Replace 15 Accounting SolutionsSt. Therese of the Little Flower chooses Microsoft Dynamics NAV with Serenic Navigator to provide accounting and communication services for 160 parishes in the Catholic diocese.

REDMOND, Wash., May 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Microsoft Corp. today announced that St. Therese of the Little Flower Inc., which provides accounting and communication services to the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay, Wis., has selected Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Serenic Navigator to centralize and standardize accounting for all 160 parishes and 62 schools in the diocese.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

The Microsoft Dynamics NAV technology, embedded with Navigator, an application from Serenic Software Inc., will replace 15 types of software acquired independently by the parishes and schools. The previous software included Sage Accpac, Sage BusinessWorks, Sage MAS 90, Peachtree by Sage, CAD Shareware, CheckMark MultiLedger, Intuit QuickBooks and Quicken.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV is a business management solution for small and midsize organizations. It helps simplify and streamline highly specialized business processes, providing industry-specific functionality relevant to the local needs of regional operations. Serenic Navigator, a Microsoft Dynamics NAV-embedded solution, builds upon the Microsoft solution to provide critical functionality such as fund accounting and management of organizational budgets to nonprofit organizations such as the diocese.

Diocesan, parish and school leaders selected Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Serenic Navigator after reviewing 40 industry-specific software solutions.

"We needed to standardize our accounting for all diocesan parishes and schools," said Paula Nault, financial systems consultant for St. Therese of the Little Flower. "The solution had to be scalable to serve diverse needs while providing a standard chart of accounts structure and standard reporting capabilities. Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Serenic Navigator provide those capabilities at a price we can afford."

Together with Serenic Navigator, Microsoft Dynamics NAV software will ease communications challenges the diocese had been experiencing and help it overcome the problems of compiling multiple reports from parishes and schools with different accounting capacities. Moreover, pastors and other leaders are now taking on more parishes and schools and need a common accounting system to manage them. In addition, access to technological expertise may not be readily available in many parishes.

To resolve these issues, St. Therese will deliver its Microsoft Dynamics NAV with Serenic Navigator accounting capabilities through the Web, so that all parishes will communicate via the Internet, with a common database accessible online.

To implement the solution, St. Therese is working with Microsoft Gold Certified Partner eSoftware Professionals (eSP), headquartered in Portland, Ore. eSP will implement the solution and activate a complete range of accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, purchase orders, bank reconciliation, budgeting, direct deposit, cash management, allocations, and fixed assets, to be used by all parishes. The Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Serenic Navigator solution will be configured according to accounting needs so that each parish and its school will have access only to the functions it needs and wants.

St. Therese of the Little Flower and the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay look forward to a number of anticipated benefits that the solution will provide:

-- Better time allocation. With an automated, integrated and standardized accounting system for the parishes and schools, more time can be devoted to the vital ministries of the church. Microsoft Dynamics NAV with Serenic Navigator will make the administrative side of the pastors' and other leaders' work more manageable. More timely and accurate reports will be available to church leadership, finance councils, parishioners and parents of school students. The integrated database allows information to become more accessible to the diocese to save time in gathering data. -- Cost savings. The diocese's parishes and schools expect to be able to reduce redundancies, save money on maintenance and no longer develop expensive work-around solutions that were needed with its 15 software solutions. In addition, parishes and schools will avoid the potentially catastrophic expense of losing data after a physical server problem. All the data now will be backed up in a Web-hosted environment from the integrated database. By implementing a single hosted solution, the diocese expects to eliminate the costs involved in backup management, software updates and additional IT infrastructure at the parish level. -- More reliable access to more complete information. St. Therese expects to be able to provide access to advanced technology solutions that individual parishes may not have been able to afford on their own, and expects that more information will be available in real time. In addition, by standardizing the chart of accounts and providing template report formats for the parishes and schools, St. Therese expects to provide stronger reporting to finance councils, boards of education and the diocese. -- Time savings. Instead of needing to prepare consolidated reports manually, the diocese will benefit from the Microsoft Dynamics solution's enterprise reporting capabilities. These are expected to significantly reduce the time needed to communicate financial information from the parish, as well as from school leadership. -- More accurate data. Previously, parishes and schools produced reports for the diocese by printing their data and then manually completing paper forms or by completing online data questionnaires. Now, with its import and export capabilities, Microsoft Dynamics NAV with Serenic Navigator expects to eliminate duplication of data entry and the inherent entry errors that can occur. -- Better planning. The parishes and schools will be able to allocate their funds more effectively throughout the year with the cash flow reports and budgeting tools provided by the solution. Now they have the tools to determine, for example, if dollars will be available to fund a youth ministry program, based on forecasts.

"Much like any other business, the day-to-day operation of a parish has grown in complexity over the years," said Deacon Tim Reilly, director of administration for the diocese. "Through the collaboration of our parish, school and diocesan leaders, we are adopting solutions such as Microsoft Dynamics NAV with Serenic Navigator to help us streamline important business functions and use technology to our advantage."

St. Therese expects the combination of Microsoft Dynamics NAV technology and Serenic Navigator functionality to enable parish and school staff and volunteers alike to spend more time on their most important efforts.

"For organizations that have a large number of operating centers, as does the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay, Microsoft Dynamics products can unify their data to support fast, accurate and insightful decision-making," said Michael Park, corporate vice president for Microsoft's U.S. Dynamics business. "Microsoft Dynamics helps organizations plan their futures and advance their missions by furnishing a clear and consistent view of information across the enterprise."

J.D. Power and Associates Reports: Rising Popularity of Smartphone Devices Drives Higher Wireless Mobile Phone PricesSony Ericsson Ranks Highest among Wireless Mobile Phone Manufacturers for a Second Consecutive Time

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The average reported purchase price for wireless mobile phones is now $9 higher than reported in 2007, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 U.S. Wireless Mobile Phone Evaluation Study(SM)-Volume 1 released today.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050527/LAF028LOGO-a)

The study finds that the average reported purchase price for a wireless handset has increased substantially for the first time in two years. The average purchase price cited by customers for a mobile phone is $101 -- up $9 from just six months ago -- and marks the highest average price paid for a wireless device since the study's inception in 2003.

The increase in the average purchase price can be partially attributed to the recent surge in popularity of smartphone devices, such as the RIM Blackberry, Palm Treo and recently introduced Apple iPhone, as well as music- enabled handsets, both of which typically have higher price points when first offered. The current average reported purchase price for smartphone devices is $208, much higher than the average price paid ($58) for phones with fewer features.

"As more customers start to upgrade to mobile phones that offer real-time connectivity and access to Internet content -- particularly those offered by smartphone devices -- we should continue to see the wireless handset price point rise," said Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services at J.D. Power and Associates. "Sales of smartphone devices have increased considerably over the past year to 6.3 percent from 1.7 percent in overall market share at the beginning of 2007."

The study also finds that another influence on the rise of the average mobile phone purchase price is a sudden decrease in the number of wireless customers who say they receive their current phone for free. The percentage of customers who say they received a free handset has decreased from 36 percent to 33 percent during the past six months.

"Although 2008 marks the first time since the inception of the study that customers report a decline in the receipt of free handsets, this is not unexpected, given the increase in the popularity of smartphones, which have a much higher price point and tend to be discounted less frequently by wireless carriers," said Parsons.

The study measures customer satisfaction with wireless handsets by examining five key factors. In order of importance, they are: physical design (24%); operation (22%); features (20%); handset durability (19%); and battery function (15%).

Sony Ericsson ranks highest in overall wireless customer satisfaction for a second consecutive time with a score of 740 points on a 1,000-point scale, performing particularly well in all factors. LG (721) also ranks above the industry average.

The study also finds several key wireless handset usage patterns: -- Seventy-four percent of all cell phones have a clamshell design-an increase of 24 percent from 2006. This compares to 21 percent for the candy-bar style and 5 percent for the slide-cover design. -- The average reported length of cell phone ownership is 17.7 months -- an increase from 16.6 months in 2006. -- The most frequently reported reasons customers select their current cell phone include: pleasing design style (41%); received for free (25%); easy to use (23%); discounted/reduced price (21%); digital camera features (18%); variety of features offered and small size (17%).

Volume 1 of the 2008 U.S. Wireless Mobile Phone Evaluation Study is based on experiences reported by 18,093 wireless users who have owned their current mobile phone for less than two years. The results are from the two most recent study reporting waves, which were conducted in September 2007 and January 2008. ISWI Subsidiary Signs Contract With Sunderlands

WEST PATERSON, N.J., May 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Interactive Systems Worldwide, Inc.'s (BULLETIN BOARD: ISWI) wholly-owned subsidiary, Global Interactive Gaming Limited (GIG), has signed a contract with Sunderlands Online Limited (Sunderlands).

Under the terms of the agreement, ISWI's SportXction(R) play-by-play sports betting system will be incorporated into Sunderlands' website, http://www.sunderlands.eu/ as well as into several other related European and Asian websites through Sunderlands' joint venture agreements. The system is expected to launch later this year.

Sunderlands does not currently offer its customers any in-run wagering, i.e. wagering during a sporting event. The agreement calls for GIG to be Sunderlands' primary in-run betting provider.

The agreement will provide GIG with an upfront fee as well as a share of the monthly wagering revenue. GIG's revenue share will be subject to certain monthly minimum fees. GIG will furnish the technology and operate the system, while Sunderlands will be responsible for promoting the product through a series of marketing initiatives. Sunderlands will also be responsible for providing first level customer support and processing customer financial transactions. In addition, Sunderlands has agreed that the SportXction(R) system will not be used to accept bets from anyone in the U.S.

Bernard Albanese, Chief Executive Officer of ISWI, said, "We are thrilled that Sunderlands has chosen us as their in-run betting provider. Sunderlands is recognized for its strong online, telephone and on-course betting presence in the UK and Europe. We believe our software will provide Sunderlands' customers with some exciting new ways to enhance their wagering experiences."

According to Dave Grogan, Chief Executive Officer of Sunderlands, "SportXction provides Sunderlands Online with a tremendous platform for in run betting and a first class partner. As one of Europe's fastest growing bookmakers, we are driven by meeting the needs and expectations of our customers. We are sure they will be delighted with this service."

The agreement between Sunderlands and GIG is for an initial 18-month term. The plan is that the initial implementation for Sunderlands will consist of an enhanced version of the Company's stand-alone product, which will require the customer to log in only once. It is the intention of both parties to migrate to the Company's integrated version of SportXction(R) product after certain technology changes are implemented in Sunderlands' back-end system.

    About Interactive Systems Worldwide, Inc.

The Changing Face of ITMicrosoft will host a Web conference to discuss the future of diversity in IT.

REDMOND, Wash., May 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- As many college students prepare to enter the work force, too few African-Americans, Hispanics and women will graduate with degrees that will prepare them for IT-related jobs. This situation has serious repercussions for IT companies such as Microsoft Corp. that are constantly looking to increase diversity in their work force. Today, Microsoft will host a Web conference with leading engineering and diversity experts to discuss issues IT companies are facing in creating a multicultural work force and what corporations can do to cultivate more diversity.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

According to statistics reported by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), African Americans account for roughly 11 percent of bachelor's degree recipients in computer science, with Hispanics accounting for approximately 7 percent in 2006-2007. Women only accounted for 19 percent of computing and information science undergraduate degrees in 2006-2007 (National Center for Education Statistics). NCWIT also cites Bureau of Labor Statistics predictions that computer-related occupations are among the fastest-growing occupations, adding up to 822,000 more jobs to the U.S. economy by 2016. These data show the real challenge IT companies face when striving to create a multicultural work force.

Today's Web conference, viewed at http://www.microsoft.com/diversity and moderated by Kim Bondy, founder and president of the Bondy Group, will delve into reasons for the shortage and what can be done to increase the number of diverse employees in the IT ranks. Carl Mack, executive director of the National Society of Black Engineers(NSBE); Ali Curi, president of the Hispanic Professionals Networking Group (HPNG); Michelle Tortolani, president of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE); and Kelly Chapman, director of Diversity Recruiting at Microsoft, will be featured panelists.

"The lack of diversity in the IT field presents itself not because pursuing a engineering degree is too hard and blacks and Hispanics turn away, but because too few students, of any race or ethnicity, are exposed to math and science. There is also a lack of role models in these communities attracting students to these disciplines," Mack said. "Major IT corporations like Microsoft have to find a way to build the existing pipeline of talent by exciting students about careers in IT."

While the numbers are daunting, Microsoft is actively engaged in efforts to reverse this trend. The company has initiated its Diversity Recruiting Initiatives Via Excellence (DRIVE) campaign to address the three major challenges of building an IT work force -- building an IT pipeline, cultivating talent, and attracting and retaining qualified diverse talent. DRIVE addresses these issues by hosting programs to encourage high school and college students to pursue careers in IT, providing software grants to private and nonprofit organizations, sponsoring professional and technical organizations, and launching http://www.youatmicrosoft.com/, a groundbreaking online diversity recruitment tool unveiled today.

"DRIVE is just one example of Microsoft's commitment to be the leader in attracting minorities and women to careers in IT," Chapman said. "With new jobs opening all across the company, our newly launched tool, youatmicrosoft.com, will prove vital in helping Microsoft recruit the best and brightest to meet our work-force needs."

Youatmicrosoft.com is an interactive Web site that provides an inside view of what it is like to work at Microsoft. This diversity recruitment tool showcases the real-life experiences of several Microsoft employees from all walks of life. It also features a calendar of events supported by the Microsoft diversity recruitment team and employment links.

"With the number of women and minorities entering IT careers on the decline and the demand for IT professionals on the rise, IT companies must take advantage of the numerous opportunities to transform the landscape," Tortolani said. "Diverse organizations like SWE must be supported so we can continue inspiring young people to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. At the professional level, innovative recruitment strategies must be used to attract qualified diverse candidates. Microsoft's DRIVE campaign is exactly the type of holistic approach needed to diversify the face of IT."

Founded in 1975, Microsoft is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

Lexmark, ETSec develop new secure, accountable result delivery system for clinical labs

LEXINGTON, Ky., May 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- It is estimated that laboratory testing has an impact on more than 70 percent of medical decisions, making the accurate distribution of test results to physician offices, hospitals and clinics vital to patient health.

Today, most labs rely on faxing and remote printing over telephone lines to distribute test results. Lexmark International, Inc. and ETSec, a global enterprise and managed security services company, have teamed to offer a new solution that makes it easier for labs to proactively manage the report delivery process and is designed to ensure that results are delivered safely and securely.

"With a critical process like delivering lab results, there is no room for error," said Marty Canning, Lexmark vice president and president of its Printing Solutions and Services Division. "This new solution gives labs the tools they need to effectively manage remote devices across their network, and ensure that test results reach their destination quickly and securely."

ETSec provides patented "dynamic Virtual Private Network (VPN)" technology through which print jobs are transmitted over an ultra-secure certificate- authenticated communications channel between the laboratory information system (LIS) and the remote office or clinic. Using ETSec's remote security management system, lab support personnel can remotely control and monitor every aspect of the print system. High-quality lab reports including color graphics are delivered and tracked electronically while maintaining a level of security that helps to maintain patient confidentiality.

Lexmark's unique printer management capabilities give labs access to the printers connected to ETSec's network in a way that is not compromised by printer status so that print jobs can be tracked, delivery can be confirmed, and information technology (IT) professionals can proactively manage each device. Lexmark's enhanced printer management technology provides remote diagnostics and detailed information about potential maintenance issues like low toner or paper jams so that corrective action can be taken quickly to minimize downtime.

This new solution also utilizes Lexmark's world-class Distributed Fleet Management processes, systems and tools to allow labs to automate supplies management and maintenance and monitor device usage to help reduce costs and optimize their printer fleet.
