Taunton Mayor Charles Crowley has granted a cable franchise to Verizon, authorizing video choice for thousands of households here.
The mayor's authorization brings to 71 the total number of Massachusetts communities where Verizon's FiOS TV is or will soon be available.
"We are thrilled to be able to bring FiOS TV to residents in Taunton," said Donna Cupelo, Verizon region president for Massachusetts and Rhode Island. "Since the launch of FiOS TV in Massachusetts last year, we are continuing our efforts to meet the consumer demand for cable TV choice."
Crowley said, "The signing of this agreement will mean that the citizens of Taunton will have a choice for their cable TV needs, and the competitive environment that will exist here in Taunton will ensure that our families will realize competitive prices as well. This is a significant advantage for Taunton consumers because competition often results in new features, improved service and competitive rates. The license also provides additional funding for our public, education and government cable-access channels, and ensures that all parts of the city will be served."
Crowley added: "The Verizon representatives have conducted themselves in a highly professional manner as we worked together to ensure that quality service will be provided to our citizens."
FiOS TV is the company's new fiber-optic television service, which offers a better-quality picture, more high-definition and on-demand programs, and more reliable service at competitive prices.
Verizon currently offers FiOS TV in 70 Massachusetts communities (see list below) as well as other locations in New York, New Jersey, California, Delaware, Texas, Florida, Maryland, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Rhode Island and Virginia.
"As a result of this new franchise, consumers in Taunton will be able to choose their cable provider as easily as they choose their phone company," said Cupelo. "Competition drives innovation, value and service quality, and it puts the consumer in control."
Verizon is currently in negotiations with several other communities in Massachusetts to obtain additional franchises. For more information on the Verizon franchise process in the state, log onto http://www.verizon.com/ma.
Verizon research indicates 87 percent of Massachusetts residents favor more competition and choice for video services. Independent studies have shown that competition in the video market brings enormous benefits to consumers in the form of reduced prices, better packages and improved service.
Verizon's license agreement with the city of Taunton is for a 10-year term. The agreement contains provisions for the network's future growth; financial support and capacity for educational and government access channels; cable service to government buildings; and other important benefits to the city, including insurance, indemnification and enforcement protections.
"Verizon will compete aggressively for subscribers in Taunton with our FiOS services, which are fueled by our lightning-fast fiber-optic network," Cupelo said. Verizon soon will begin its door-to-door sales campaign in Taunton, explaining the many advantages of FiOS TV to local consumers.
Verizon is the first company to offer a fiber-to-the premises (FTTP) network, connecting homes and businesses directly to fiber optics on a widespread scale.
FiOS TV offers a broad collection of all-digital programming, 30 high-definition channels, video on demand and more. Fiber delivers amazingly sharp pictures and sound, and has the capacity to transmit a wide array of high-definition programming that is so clear and intense it seems to leap from the TV screen.
In addition to FiOS TV, Verizon's fiber network also allows the company to offer consumers and businesses high-speed FiOS Internet service at download speeds up to 50 Mbps (megabits per second) and upload speeds up to 20 Mbps.*
* NOTE: actual (throughput) speeds will vary.
[FiOS TV is available in Abington, Acton, Andover, Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Boxborough, Boxford, Braintree, Burlington, Canton, Dedham, Dunstable, Framingham, Franklin, Georgetown, Hamilton, Hingham, Holliston, Hopkinton, Ipswich, Lakeville, Lawrence, Lincoln, Littleton, Lexington, Lynn, Lynnfield, Malden, Marion, Marlborough, Marshfield, Mattapoisett, Medfield, Medway, Melrose, Methuen, Middleborough, Nahant, Natick, Needham, Newton, North Reading, Norfolk, Norwood, Reading, Rochester, Rockland, Rowley, Sherborn, Southborough, Stoneham, Sudbury, Swampscott, Tewksbury, Topsfield, Tyngsborough, Wakefield, Walpole, Waltham, Wareham, Wayland, Wellesley, Wenham, West Newbury, Westborough, Westwood, Wilmington, Winchester and Woburn, as well as other locations in New York, New Jersey, California, Delaware, Texas, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia.]

CIBER and ArtinSoft Team to Convert Mission-Critical Software for Leading Midwest Insurance Company
CHICAGO, May 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CIBER, Inc., of Denver, CO, a global provider of information technology (IT) services, and ArtinSoft of San Jose, Costa Rica, a software firm specializing in conversion / migration tools and services, have collaborated to complete the conversion of a mission-critical Human Resources (HR) software application for a leading Midwest insurance company. CIBER and ArtinSoft partnered to convert approximately 400,000 lines of code from Microsoft Visual Basic 6 (VB6) to Microsoft Visual Basic.NET (VB.NET) within an aggressive time window. As a result of this effort, the client can continue to utilize the functionality within its HR application on a supported technology platform and without compromise to application performance.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010927/CBRLOGO)
The client engaged CIBER in November 2007 to perform the conversion of its home-grown application to VB.NET. To meet the client's aggressive schedule and budget constraints, CIBER devised a comprehensive solution that involved resources from its CIBER India offshore operation, as well as two conversion tools that could be utilized to expedite project activities. The conversion tools selected were the Microsoft Upgrade Wizard, which had been developed by ArtinSoft for Microsoft, and the ArtinSoft Visual Basic Upgrade Companion Tool.
With the aid of the conversion tools, the HR application code has been successfully converted, final user acceptance testing is being concluded, and the converted application is targeted for roll-out into the client's production environment in June 2008.
"The success of this project was due in great part to the successful collaboration of CIBER and ArtinSoft," said Joe Mancuso, Senior Vice President of CIBER's Commercial Practice. "The quality of the conversion tools provided by ArtinSoft exceeded our expectations, and we found ArtinSoft to be a flexible and reliable partner who provided exceptional product training and sales support."
Based on the successful completion of the pilot phase, the remaining lines of code were subdivided into smaller work packets and successfully converted and tested by technical resources at CIBER's facilities in India. CIBER managed the client relationship from its Chicago-area office in Oakbrook Terrace, IL.
"CIBER's global presence and outstanding service delivery reputation were key factors in pursuing the partnership," said Roberto Leiton, Chief Executive Officer of ArtinSoft. "This venture will allow us to leverage our technology and CIBER's service capabilities on a global basis to the benefit of our clients, while achieving a broader market share in the software migration business. Artinsoft's technology enables business continuity and compliance by saving valuable resources and maintaining critical business rules as opposed to rewriting applications. By using automated conversion tools, clients can minimize organizational disruption and accelerate time-to-market."
"This partnership uniquely positions CIBER and ArtinSoft to deliver compelling solutions in the software conversion space," said Jim Tatro, VP & Area Director of CIBER's Chicago-area office. "We are confident this partnership will prove to be very beneficial to both firms, but especially to our clients as we work collaboratively to deliver targeted solutions with meaningful business benefits."

Verizon Wireless Expands Wireless Broadband Service Into Cattaraugus, Allegany and Steuben Counties in New YorkWireless Customers Can Now Access the Internet at Broadband Speeds and Download Music, Videos and Games to Their Phones
OLEAN, N.Y., May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless announced today it has expanded BroadbandAccess, its wireless broadband service, into Cattaraugus, Allegany and Steuben Counties, giving local customers access to the latest high-speed business and entertainment services on their wireless phones, laptop and desktop computers, and PDAs.
Customers living in and visiting the area can now access their e-mail, corporate data, the Internet, and more at broadband speeds -- in their homes or on the road. They can also view and download video clips on their phones, download music onto their handsets over-the-air, play 3D games, and send large data files at faster speeds as the company continues to expand the next generation of its high-speed wireless broadband network across Upstate New York.
The company has added CDMA 1x Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revision A (Rev. A) technology to more than 30 cell sites in the following areas:
Olean Friendship Greenwood
Portville Houghton Hammondsport
Hinsdale Wellsville Hornell
Alfred Addison Howard
Almond Avoca Lindley
Andover Bath Jasper
Angelica Campbell Presho
Bolivar Canisteo Savona
Cuba Woodhull
The company also announced today it has added EV-DO Rev. A technology to several sites in Tompkins and Schuyler Counties and more than a dozen sites in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, and Tioga Counties.
"Verizon Wireless is focused on providing the best customer experience, and a major part of that commitment is making sure we continue to have the best, most reliable network," said Marquett Smith, president of Verizon Wireless' Upstate New York region. "Instead of merely offering wireless broadband service in metropolitan areas or near major airports, we're committed to giving our customers the ability to access the Internet, corporate data and premium entertainment content at broadband speeds throughout the Southern Tier and Western New York."
Verizon Wireless' broadband network now stretches from Buffalo east through Rochester, Syracuse and Utica/Rome to Albany; north to Glens Falls and south through Poughkeepsie to the New York City area; Binghamton west through the Elmira/Corning/Hornell area to Olean; and in the Ithaca area. The entire Upstate New York EV-DO network is now Rev. A capable, meaning customers can enjoy even faster speeds than before when both downloading and sending large files on the company's broadband data network.
BroadbandAccess provides average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits per second and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps, translating to being able to download a 1 Megabyte e-mail attachment -- the equivalent of a small PowerPoint(R) presentation or a large PDF file -- in about eight seconds and upload the same-sized file in less than 13 seconds. Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service allows customers to download files significantly faster than customers of other wireless service providers that use different broadly deployed network technologies.
"Our enhanced BroadbandAccess service gives our customers three key advantages in wireless communication: speed, mobility and security," said Smith. "With these advantages comes an increase in productivity and bottom-line business benefits."
The company's high-speed network also enables its V CAST multimedia services, offering customers the ability to download full-song tracks from a library of over 3 million tunes, play cutting-edge 3D games and stream video clips straight to their handsets with top transmission speeds. Granby, Connecticut and Granville, Massachusetts Residents To Benefit from Verizon Wireless Network ExpansionInvesting to Stay Ahead of Growing Demand for Wireless Voice, Multimedia and Internet Access
GRANBY, Conn., May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for residents in Connecticut and Massachusetts, Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site. The new site increases wireless voice and data coverage and capacity along Routes 189 and 539 in Granby, Connecticut, and southern Granville, Massachusetts, as well as the surrounding area.
Verizon Wireless has invested more than $45 billion since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services like BroadbandAccess and V CAST. Regionally the company has invested nearly $2.2 billion into its New England network, including over $292 million in 2007 alone. As a result of these investments, every Verizon Wireless cell site in New England offers wireless broadband connectivity.
BroadbandAccess offers computer users the nation's most reliable high- speed wireless mobile broadband network, operating at average upload speeds between 500 and 800 kbps, and download speeds between 600 kbps and 1.4 mbps over Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess with EV-DO Revision A network. V CAST brings video clips of TV shows, music on demand and other multimedia services to wireless phones.
Strong demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the first quarter of 2008 as the company added 1.5 million net new customers and, for the fourteenth consecutive quarter, reported the lowest customer turnover (highest customer loyalty) rate in the wireless industry.
The company's 'nation's most reliable wireless network' reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country who inspired the "can you hear me now" national advertising campaign. Nationally, these test men and women drive nearly 100 specially equipped vehicles almost 1,000,000 miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high- population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts, to confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than three million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

Verizon Wireless Expands Local Wireless Broadband NetworkMore Wireless Customers in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, and Tioga Counties Can Now Access the Internet at Broadband Speeds and Download Music, Videos and Games to Their Phones
BINGHAMTON, N.Y., May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless announced today it has expanded BroadbandAccess, its wireless broadband service, in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, and Tioga Counties, giving local customers access to the latest high-speed business and entertainment services on their wireless phones, laptop and desktop computers, and PDAs.
Customers living in and visiting the areas of Afton, Bainbridge, Candor, Castle Creek, Delhi, Killawog, Kirkwood, Norwich, Oxford, Sherburne, and Sidney can now access their e-mail, corporate data, the Internet, and more at broadband speeds -- in their homes or on the road.
A) technology to more than a dozen cell sites in the above areas. The company also announced today it has added EV-DO Rev. A technology to more than 30 sites in Cattaraugus, Allegany and Steuben Counties and several sites in Tompkins and Schuyler Counties.
"Verizon Wireless is focused on providing the best customer experience, and a major part of that commitment is making sure we continue to have the best, most reliable network," said Marquett Smith, president of Verizon Wireless' Upstate New York region. "Instead of merely offering wireless broadband service in metropolitan areas or near major airports, we're committed to giving our customers the ability to access the Internet, corporate data and premium entertainment content at broadband speeds throughout the Southern Tier and Central New York."
Verizon Wireless' EV-DO network launched in the Binghamton area in December 2006.
With content updated daily, customers can watch dozens of on demand videos, including breaking news, weather, sports highlights, and the hottest entertainment clips.
BroadbandAccess is available for $39.99 monthly access for 50 MB of data usage, or $59.99 monthly access for 5 GB of data usage with a new one- or two-year agreement. BroadbandAccess service also is available as an integrated option on select notebook and laptop computers. -- "ThinkQuest encourages students to develop skills that are critical for
success in a global economy," said Clare Dolan, Vice President, Oracle
Corporate Citizenship. "The students develop a high-end learning
project from scratch. Throughout this challenging process, they learn
via their personal experience and through their team interactions. It
is truly inspiring to see what the students accomplish. The educational
websites that they produce are absolutely first-rate and serve as
invaluable educational resources for their peers worldwide."
-- "This process is for me, a renewal of sorts in my belief that kids can
and do change their world. To review these websites, and to see the
amount of effort that goes into each one, puts a positive light on the
future," said Bill McGrath, PhD and ThinkQuest judge. "Children have an
advantage in this ever-changing technological world and they apply that
fearless 'techno-advantage,' as ThinkQuest shows us, into solutions for
current and future issues. We (adults) would be well advised to learn
to listen to our youth. They are learning global collaboration as a
part of this process, they understand the importance of diversity and
utilize the media of the day to convey messages that in time, will be
shared by millions around the globe."
