iPhone SDK Downloads Top 250,000New App Store Available in 62 Countries

SAN FRANCISCO, June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today announced that downloads of its iPhone(TM) SDK (Software Development Kit) have topped more than 250,000 since its launch on March 6. The iPhone SDK provides developers with the same rich set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and tools that Apple uses to create its native applications for iPhone. Apple today also announced that its amazing new App Store will be available in 62 countries bringing a breakthrough way for developers to wirelessly deliver their applications directly to iPhone and iPod(R) touch users around the world. Users can download applications wirelessly and start using them immediately.

"Developer reaction to the features, power and simplicity of the iPhone SDK has been incredible," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "We are seeing some truly amazing native apps from our developers and think users are going to love the breadth and depth of the applications available from the App Store."

Leading developers such as AOL, Cisco, eBay, Electronic Arts, Epocrates, TypePad, Salesforce.com and Sega have demonstrated impressive native applications developed using the iPhone SDK.

"The SDK allowed us to build a groundbreaking new AIM client in record time," said Kevin Conroy, executive vice president, AOL. "The platform's elegance and ease of use has inspired our developers to create innovative new web and SDK based experiences for iPhone and iPod touch."

"The iPhone SDK has given us an excellent set of tools and APIs to create mobile extensions for FIM's entire portfolio of web brands including MySpace, IGN and Photobucket in the near term, and other properties such as FOXSports.com down the road," said John Smelzer, senior vice president of Mobile for Fox Interactive Media. "The popularity of the iPhone, along with the high demand for applications, gives us an amazing opportunity to create ground-breaking mobile experiences."

"Cocoa-touch is a compact and robust application framework that handles all the heavy lifting for developers so they can concentrate on building their applications in record time with the legendary Apple finesse we've come to expect," said David Krantz, president of YELLOWPAGES.COM. "iPhone has been a game changer since it launched, and the availability of our YELLOWPAGES.COM application on the App Store is going to make a great device even better."

"As mobile developers with primarily J2ME and BREW experience, we were up and running with the iPhone within two weeks," said Jonathan Backer, manager of Mobile Engineering, The Walt Disney Company. "The hardware is stable and full-featured, while the software development tools are intuitive and represent a level of polish rarely seen in the mobile arena."

"Since the launch of the iPhone we have seen a steady rise in traffic to the MLB.com mobile site so it made perfect sense to develop a rich client application for the App Store," said Adam Ritter, vice president, Wireless Major League Baseball, Advanced Media. "Our development staff was excited to work on an iPhone application and reported that the SDK was robust and straight forward and contained helpful development tools. All combined we were able to expedite our development and deliver an application we know baseball fans will enjoy."

The free beta iPhone SDK can be downloaded at developer.apple.com/iphone/program. Membership to the iPhone Developer Program is available worldwide. Developers set the price for their applications -- including free -- and retain 70 percent of all sales revenues.

GCI Completes Purchase Of Communications Subsidiaries of United Companies, Inc.Purchase to Accelerate Rollout of Mobile Wireless Service in Rural Alaska and Enhance Telemedicine and Distance Learning

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- GCI announced today the completion of its acquisition of the communication subsidiaries of United Companies, Inc., a holding company owned by Sea Lion Corporation and Togiak Natives Limited, the Alaska Native village corporations for Hooper Bay and Togiak. The acquisition was completed on June 3, 2008.

Under terms of the acquisition, GCI paid approximately $42 million in cash (including certain transaction costs) for the stock of:

-- United Utilities, Inc. (UUI), which together with its subsidiary, United-KUC, provides local telephone service to 60 rural Alaska communities. -- Unicom, which operates DeltaNet, a long-haul broadband microwave network ringing the 30,000-square-mile Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (Y-K Delta) in southwest Alaska. By the end of this year, DeltaNet will link more than 40 villages to the regional center of Bethel.

As of the completion date, the acquired companies had combined net debt of approximately $35 million.

"The acquisition of UUI and Unicom marks another step forward in GCI's plan to become the first full-service, statewide provider of communications services in Alaska," said Ron Duncan, GCI president. "The acquisition will accelerate our rural wireless deployment, which will bring mobile voice/broadband wireless services to 200 rural towns and villages over the next three years. GCI is proud to welcome all of the employees of UUI and Unicom to the GCI family."

GCI's Managed Broadband Services division will use DeltaNet to immediately expand healthcare and educational opportunities for all residents of the Y-K Delta. GCI ConnectMD, a medical network that reaches from the Arctic Alaska to the Pacific Northwest, will now become a fully statewide network as will GCI SchoolAccess, which delivers enhanced Internet access and distance learning services to schools.

"With the guidance and support of Sea Lion Corporation and Togiak Natives Limited over the past thirty years, UCI has built a first-rate local telephone company that serves thousands of rural Alaskans," Duncan noted. "With the deployment of DeltaNet, UCI also has changed the ground rules for delivering advanced telecommunications services in rural Alaska. For example, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, a pioneer in advanced-technology telemedicine and telepsychiatry solutions, is taking advantage of DeltaNet's high-bandwidth and low latency by installing high-definition medical video conferencing units in 40 villages.

"Completing this transaction is a milestone for Sea Lion," stated Myron Naneng, Sea Lion president. "Building UCI was more than an investment for us -- it was a way to bring essential communications services to villages in our region. Despite the doubts of some at the time we founded the company, we were successful on both fronts. We thank the employees of UUI and Unicom, who have contributed so much to this success."

GCI is Alaska's largest telecommunications company. The company operates Alaska's most extensive terrestrial/subsea fiber optic network, extending from Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope through Fairbank, Anchorage, Juneau, and the lower 48 states. GCI's satellite network provides communications services to small towns and villages throughout rural Alaska. The company is in the process of constructing a statewide mobile wireless network to seamlessly link urban and rural Alaska for the first time. GCI is also the leading provider of communications services to enterprise customers, particularly large business customers with complex data networking needs. Verizon Wireless Rolls Out 'COW' to Rev Up Capacity During Laconia Motorcycle WeekTemporary, Portable Cell Site Activated To Handle Anticipated Increased Wireless Usage

LACONIA, N.H., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless is beefing up network capacity as New Hampshire's Lakes Region shifts into high gear for the 85th anniversary of Laconia Motorcycle Week. The company has activated a temporary cell to accommodate an anticipated increase in wireless usage as tourists and motorcyclists converge on the area from June 14-22.

The Cell on Wheels (COW) is a mobile cell site that enhances wireless capacity -- allowing more customers to concurrently place calls, exchange messages, and download content. Verizon Wireless maintains a fleet of portable transmitters to support its network when highly populated events or weather disasters stimulate increased wireless voice and data usage.

"The presence of a mobile COW will enhance our network capacity as motorcyclists make their annual pilgrimage to Laconia," said Richard Enright, director of network performance for Verizon Wireless New England. "We're constantly investing, engineering and deploying resources to stay ahead of the growing demand for our products and services."

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $45 billion since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services like BroadbandAccess and V CAST. Regionally the company has invested nearly $2.2 billion into its New England network, including over $292 million in 2007 alone. As a result of these investments, every Verizon Wireless cell site in New England offers wireless broadband connectivity.

Quick Facts on the Cell on Wheels (COW) -- The temporary cell site is equivalent to the highest capacity stationary site presently available in the Verizon Wireless network - able to process thousands of calls every hour. -- The trucks are specially-equipped with $500,000 in sophisticated mobile equipment. -- The 25,000 lb. vehicle features a 55 ft. retractable mast. In the interest of emergency preparedness, the vehicle is fully self-contained with equipment, fuel, electrical generators, food, water, cots, etc.

Verizon Wireless recently opened several new retail stores in New Hampshire. During the month of May, the company added locations in Nashua, Keene and Tilton. In April, authorized retailer Wireless Zone, featuring Verizon Wireless products and services, opened a location in Keene, while Go Wireless opened a new store in North Conway.

The company's 'nation's most reliable wireless network' reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country who inspired the "can you hear me now" national advertising campaign. Nationally, these test men and women drive nearly 100 specially equipped vehicles almost 1,000,000 miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high- population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts, to confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than three million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

    About Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless operates the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, serving 67.2 million customers. DEWmocracy Polls Now Open and Voting for New Mountain Dew Flavor Has BegunThree Consumer-Created Mountain Dew "Candidates" Vie to Clinch Nomination as "The Peoples' Dew"

PURCHASE, N.Y., June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- DEWmocracy is alive and well in America. People are casting their votes in a heated three-way race for the next addition to the Mountain Dew lineup. Mountain Dew Revolution, Mountain Dew Voltage and Mountain Dew Supernova, designed for the people, by the people at DEWmocracy.com, will be on shelves for the next 12 weeks, while Americans have the opportunity to taste all three and cast a vote for their favorite. The Dew with the most votes will be officially inaugurated as "The People's Dew" in September 2008.

In a first of its kind online experience, Dew fans created every aspect of the three new products through a series of interactive games on DEWmocracy.com. Once on the site, they were invited to select everything from the color and flavor, to the label and name of the three new "candidates." The result was three totally unique products representing the taste of the people:

-- Mountain Dew Voltage: Dew charged with raspberry citrus flavor and ginseng -- Mountain Dew Revolution: Dew infused with wild berry fruit flavor and ginseng -- Mountain Dew Supernova: Dew with a blast of strawberry melon flavor and ginseng

Using interactive campaigning kits available on the DEWmocracy Web site, now the time has come for Dew drinkers to hit the virtual campaign trail and generate support for their favorite flavor.

"DEWmocracy is giving the people all of the power to develop their own Mountain Dew," said Frank Cooper, VP of portfolio brands for Pepsi-Cola North America. "Consumers will use their votes to tell us which new flavor will be on store shelves. This is the latest example of how we are bringing consumers even closer to the brand they love by allowing them to create the next Mountain Dew."

Americans can vote now for the next Dew flavor at DEWmocracy.com and via a first-ever 50-foot interactive billboard at Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles. At the billboard site, visitors are invited to test all three Mountain Dew flavors, before pushing a button to fire a paintball gun and place a colorful vote on a billboard target high in the sky.

In addition to the interactive billboard, DEWmocracy will be supported by a comprehensive marketing campaign that includes a 30-second TV commercial currently airing nationwide. The "Tug-of-War" spot shows people all over the country participating in a three-way tug-of-war that illustrates the battle between the DEWmocracy flavors as Americans choose their favorite. BBDO New York created the DEWmocracy billboard at Hollywood & Highland and the TV commercial.

All three Mountain Dew flavors are available from June through September 2008 at mass, drug and retail outlets nationwide.

Siemens SOMATOM Definition AS Receives FDA ClearanceMedical University of South Carolina Becomes One of the First Clinical Installations of World's First Adaptive CT Scanner

MALVERN, Pa., June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Siemens Medical Solutions USA, Inc. (http://www.siemens.com/healthcare) has received FDA 510(k) market clearance for the SOMATOM(R) Definition AS, the world's first adaptive CT scanner. The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston is one of the first facilities to install the scanner, adding to the SOMATOM Definition Dual Source MUSC installed in September 2006.

    (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080609/NYM026) (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070904/SIEMENSLOGO )

The SOMATOM Definition AS adapts to virtually any patient, adapts for complete dose protection, adapts for new dimensions, and adapts to the user's space.

"The SOMATOM Definition AS goes beyond slices and detector rows to addresses the overall versatility and usefulness of a CT scanner," said Dr. Joseph Schoepf, associate professor of Radiology and Cardiology, and director of CT Research and Development at MUSC. "It truly allows you to adapt the CT scanning to your individual patients."

The SOMATOM Definition AS provides tremendous benefit with the Adaptive Dose Shield technology, eliminating unnecessary overradiation. "Siemens is constantly focused on improving diagnostic quality while reducing dose in computed tomography. Patient safety has consistently been, and still is, our number one priority. With our SOMATOM product family we continuously develop new ideas and solutions for maintaining ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) guidelines to achieve success and to integrate these developments into our systems for dose reduction and improvement in patient safety." Peter Kingma, vice president, Computed Tomography, Siemens Medical Solutions USA, Inc.

Until now, many CT vendors have fallen prey to unnecessary dose both before and at the end of the spiral scan range, which has been a function of spiral multi-slice imaging. As detector size and slice counts grow, the "pre and post over scan range" problem becomes more acute, particularly where older gantry designs are simply updated with newer detector designs to save cost for the manufacturer. Only Siemens' unique Adaptive Dose Shield addresses this growing issue by dynamically blocking the unnecessary dose before and after the spiral scan, ensuring that the only dose applied to the patient is dose that is clinically relevant.

The SOMATOM Definition AS adapts to each patient's clinical situation and also opens the door to new applications in CT imaging. The unique Adaptive 4D Spiral mode of the SOMATOM Definition AS is able to address functional imaging (perfusion images of blood flow over time) of whole organs. This allows Siemens to offer dynamic information of up to 27 cm. In the case of a stroke, physicians can use whole-organ perfusion imaging not only for a small part of the brain, but for all of it.

"A SOMATOM Definition CT scanner transforms itself into a stroke unit, a noninvasive cath lab, a therapy management tool for cancer patients, or an interventional suite - all according to the need of the individual patient," said Kingma. "All of these advances work to improve the quality of patient management and overall efficiency of healthcare, while keeping the costs down."

"Clinical needs have shifted and we have seen a significant upswing in the number of patients who undergo bariatric surgery," said Schoepf. "In the past, we were limited by the bore size and the table weight, but the SOMATOM Definition AS allows us to adapt to the needs of this group of patients."

The SOMATOM Definition AS comes in multiple configurations, each of which is tailored to a hospital's workflow and clinical needs, with a goal to make the most complex procedures routine. The technology couples multiple components in a dynamic manner: a large-volume coverage area with a 200-cm scan range and up to 300 msec rotation time, 78-cm gantry bore, and the ability to add a high-capacity 660-pound patient table.

These features allow even the most clinically challenging patients (i.e., trauma patients) to be imaged rapidly, from head to toe, without difficulty. The Definition AS is available in 40-slice, 64-slice, and 128-slice configurations. It can be field upgraded to other configurations with minimal downtime. This allows the technology to grow with the institution's needs while minimizing downtime and loss of service.

In addition to its extraordinary performance, the SOMATOM Definition AS is able to adapt to the space constraints many facilities face today. It requires very little floor space, with an 18-m2 footprint. This allows the Definition AS to fit into rooms that have traditionally been too small for high-end CT scanners.

Ocean County, N.J., Residents to Benefit from Verizon Wireless Network ExpansionInvesting to Stay Ahead of Growing Demand for Wireless Calling, Data Access, and Music

LAKEWOOD, N.J. and TUCKERTON, N.J., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents in Ocean County, Verizon Wireless has expanded its network with two new cell sites. The new sites increase coverage and capacity along Route 9 in Lakewood and Tuckerton, Route 528 and Cedar Bridge Road in Lakewood, and on Dock Street and Stage Road in Tuckerton.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $45 billion since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services like BroadbandAccess and V CAST. The company spent more than $190 million in 2007 to enhance services and coverage in the Philadelphia Tri-State Region, bringing the total network investment in the region to more than $1 billion since 2000.

Verizon Wireless's high-speed third generation wireless broadband network has been enhanced with EV-DO Rev. A technology. This enhancement allows customers who use the company's flagship business data service, BroadbandAccess, to interact with Web-based applications, download music over-the-air, and access to e-mail and the Internet at speeds that are eight to nine times faster than before. BroadbandAccess customers with Rev. A compatible devices can now expect average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits per second and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps. V CAST brings video clips of TV shows, music on demand and other multimedia services to wireless phones over Verizon Wireless' high-speed EV-DO network.

Strong demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the first quarter of 2008 as the company added 1.5 million net new customers and, for the 14th consecutive quarter, led the wireless industry in customer loyalty.

Verizon Wireless tests its network and those of its competitors to ensure its network remains the nation's most reliable. Nationally, the company's real-life test men and women drive 98 specially equipped vehicles almost one million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts, to determine if voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than three million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

Thirty-Seven Percent of Working Dads Would Assume Mr. Mom Role if Spouse Could Financially Support Family, CareerBuilder.com's Annual Father's Day Survey Finds- VP of Consumer Marketing and Father of Three Offers Tips for a Better Work/Life Balance -

CHICAGO, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- With Dad's Day quickly approaching, many fathers may spend their special day dreaming about being a stay-at-home dad. More than a third of working dads (37 percent) said they would leave their job if their spouse or significant other's income could comfortably support the entire family, similar to last year's findings. Struggling to strike the perfect balance between work and family life, 37 percent of working dads said they are willing to take a pay cut to spend more time with their children; 42 percent would take a pay cut of 10 percent or more. The CareerBuilder.com survey, "Working Dads 2008," was conducted from February 15 to March 6, 2008 and included 955 men, employed full-time, with children under the age of 18 living at home.

Twenty-two percent of working dads said their jobs have had a negative impact on their relationships with their children, with time management playing a role in the disruption of precious family time. Less than half (46 percent) of working dads said they have missed a significant event in their child's life in the last year due to work; 26 percent said they have missed more than three.

Leaving work at work is having a negative impact on home life. One quarter of working dads stated that they work more than 50 hours a week; more than one in five (24 percent) said they bring work home at least once, if not more, a week. Nearly half (47 percent) of working dads said they spend fewer than three hours a day with their children during the work week, while 22 percent said they spend less than two hours and 6 percent are only able to spend an hour.

Richard Castellini, Vice President of Consumer Marketing at CareerBuilder.com and father of three offers the following tips to help working dads gain a healthy balance between their work and home lives:

    1. Stay in touch -- Checking in periodically with the family will keep you up-to-date on the goings on at home and school. In some cases, calling home may allow you to adjust your schedule to attend last minute events. 2. Work from one household calendar -- Consider putting up one calendar in the house that everyone can access and update. Baseball games, recitals and other activities should be included with business trips and longer company meetings. This will allow the whole family to be organized and reduce the amount of scheduling confusion. 3. Pull out your work only after the sun has gone down -- On the nights that you bring work home, limit the amount of email checking or even working until the children have gone to sleep. When you are at home, your focus should be on your children. 4. Schedule time -- A great way to make sure you and your children spend quality time together is to schedule activities with them each week. These don't have to be eight-hour events, but more along the lines of a bike ride, a trip to the playground, or even just to play a game. 5. Invite your family to your office -- Look at your schedule and block off some time for your family to stop by and see where you work and meet your co-workers. Some organizations even schedule kid-friendly potlucks with other co-workers and their families. Survey Methodology

This survey was conducted online within the U.S. by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of CareerBuilder.com among 955 U.S. male employees (employed full-time; not self-employed with at least one child under 18 years old living at home) ages 18 and over between February 11, and March 13, 2008, respectively. Percentages for some questions are based on a subset of responses to certain questions. With a pure probability sample of 955 one could say with a 95 percent probability that the overall results have a sampling error of +/- 3.2 percentage points. Sampling error for data from sub-samples is higher and varies. A full methodology is available upon request.

Video: Zix Corporation Issues Statement Supporting Bipartisan Push for Medicare e-Prescribing RequirementNew Jersey-Based physician office is proof that small practices are optimal for eRx adoption

DALLAS, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), , the leader in hosted services for email encryption and e-prescribing, issued a statement today supporting the bipartisan efforts to require electronic prescribing for Medicare prescriptions. On June 6, Senator Max Baucus (D- MT), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, introduced the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (S. 3101). This bill included positive incentives beginning in 2009 and a requirement to write Medicare prescriptions using a qualified e-prescribing system starting in 2011, enforced by financial penalties on physicians who fail to e-prescribe after that date.

To view the Multimedia News Release, go to: http://www.prnewswire.com/mnr/zix/33589/

"ZixCorp applauds the bipartisan efforts in Congress to promote the widespread adoption of e-prescribing, which also has the support of the Administration," said Rick Spurr, chief executive officer for ZixCorp. "We believe that Medicare, as the largest payor in the United States, can significantly accelerate the utilization of this technology through financial incentives to the physician. We're pleased to offer a system that meets the criteria defined by the bill and anticipate that this legislation, should it become law, will have a considerable impact on the e-prescribing industry."

As the leader in the e-prescribing industry, ZixCorp has been a pioneer in successfully providing this life-saving technology to doctors. ZixCorp has continued to maintain its focus on primary care, with a particular emphasis on small practices, since 75 percent of those physicians in the United States are in practices of 5 or fewer physicians.

"We've seen documented results first-hand on how e-prescribing has positively impacted patient safety and improved the efficient delivery of healthcare in the United States," continued Spurr. "We're pleased to introduce Dr. Boyd as one example of this success."

Dr. Robert Boyd, a New Jersey-based primary care physician working as a solo practitioner, adopted ZixCorp's PocketScript(R) e-Prescribing service in 2006. During the last two years Dr. Boyd has experienced numerous benefits including improvements in office efficiency, added safety gains and improved patient satisfaction through a reduction in medication costs. "When we first began using e-prescribing, we found that it was very user-friendly and the PocketScript service was seamless and quite easy to get deployed in our practice," said Dr. Boyd. "Our patients have been very receptive to e-prescribing and they have expressed how happy they are that the co-pay color-coding feature in PocketScript has kept their prescription costs down by allowing me to make point-of-care decisions on their prescription cost. From a safety point of view, messages will appear on PocketScript alerting me to a possible drug-to-drug interaction and I am very appreciative of that."

    e-Prescribing Legislative Update:

On June 6, Senator Max Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, introduced the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (S. 3101). This Medicare reform bill, which addresses the scheduled 10.6 percent cut in physician reimbursement rates, includes specific provisions on electronic prescribing aimed at significantly increasing the utilization of this technology in the market. Senator Charles Grassley (R- IA), the ranking member on the Finance Committee, has signaled that the Republicans will introduce their own Medicare bill, which will contain very similar measures with respect to e-prescribing. The introduction of these bills is the culmination of growing support for e-prescribing in Congress and across a broad coalition of industry stakeholders. A Wall Street Journal article, "E-Prescribing Gets Support in Congress," reported last week that the apparent bipartisan agreement on e-prescribing seems to signal that those provisions have a good chance of surviving the haggling that will be needed to get a final Medicare bill through the divided Senate.(1) This legislation follows a letter to Congress from a broad coalition including AARP and consumer groups, business groups, healthcare companies, and physician groups, supporting the adoption of an e-prescribing requirement for Medicare. Other recent activity, including a symposium where Senator John Kerry (D- MA), former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt all advocated a mandate for writing Medicare prescriptions electronically and various calls to action to utilize e-prescribing from groups ranging from physician associations to governors, is building further momentum for the adoption of this technology.

This bill would provide physicians a positive financial incentive for using a qualified e-prescribing system to write Medicare prescriptions, starting at 2 percent of allowed Medicare charges in 2009 and declining to 0.5 percent in 2013, the final year of the incentive. At the same time, the language calls for a requirement to use the technology in 2011, enforced by 1 percent penalty for failure to prescribe electronically that increases to 2 percent in 2013 and beyond. The bill also provides for exemptions for infrequent prescribers and the ability for the Secretary of HHS to grant hardship exceptions to providers who are unable to adopt the technology. Along with standards for e-prescribing that are already in place and the structure for defining qualified systems and metrics for measurement defined in the bill, this legislation could prove to be a significant catalyst in accelerating the adoption of e-prescribing, with the impact seen as early as next year.

    ZixCorp e-Prescribing Programs Update:

The eRx Collaborative, ZixCorp's longest-running payor-sponsored e-Prescribing program, which was formed by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Tufts Health Plan and Neighborhood Health Plan in 2003, publicly stated in February 2008 that in 2007 approximately 104,000 prescriptions changed by the physician as a result of drug alerts, 2.1 percent of the electronic prescriptions written. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts has also documented that providers who used an e-prescribing device were able to choose more cost-effective drugs and saved 5 percent on their drug costs relative to those prescribers who did not use this technology. Aetna also announced that it had experienced a five to seven percent increase in use of on-formulary and generic drugs, respectively, in its New Jersey e-Prescribing pilot with ZixCorp, which also facilitates drug-drug and drug-allergy safety checks to increase patient safety.

A recent survey of physicians by the Gorman Health Group indicated that the two primary barriers to the adoption of e-prescribing were cost and administrative hassle. ZixCorp's successful payor-sponsorship go-to-market model has shown that defraying the upfront costs of technology implementation has been key to the successful adoption rates of e-prescribing that the company has experienced by eliminating cost as a barrier to adoption. ZixCorp's high-touch payor-sponsorship model embodies a high level of support to both payors and doctors for recruiting, installation, training and reporting, which also addresses the other primary barrier to adoption.

ZixCorp's PocketScript(R) e-prescribing service enables physicians to order prescriptions through a secure wireless mobile PDA or secure Web site and deliver them electronically to the patient's preferred pharmacy. CounterPath Makes Enterprise Audio Conferencing as Simple as Four-Digit Dialing

VANCOUVER, June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CounterPath Corporation (OTCBB: CPAH; TSX-V: CCV), a leading provider of desktop and mobile VoIP software products and solutions, today announced the general availability of Quick Conference (QC), a SIP-based audio conferencing solution that allows businesses to manage their own in-house conferencing services while simplifying the end-user experience.

With QC any employee can set up an audio conference, whether they are on-site or working remotely, by dialing an extension off the enterprise PBX and then selecting an ad-hoc, four-digit bridge number of their choice. Employees can also have a four-digit bridge number permanently reserved for their use only. The conferencing solution removes the complexity and usage limitations associated with traditional hosted conferencing services, allowing any employee to set up a conference bridge in seconds.

While QC simplifies audio conferencing, it also provides a variety of features designed around the needs of business users, including:

    - Web-based Management: For users who want to manage their conference call visually, QC provides a Web-based interface that allows users to see who is in the conference, mute participants, dial-out while in the conference to invite new attendees, and record the call in high definition audio - all through simple point-and-click commands. - Integration with Bria: QC integrates with CounterPath's flagship softphone - Bria. When Bria users create a conference bridge, their Bria softphone automatically provides them with a conferencing panel that allows them to visually manage the conference with the same options as they would have if they were using the Web management interface. - Remote Management: Employees can use their smartphone or PDA to control the conference through the device browser. This provides mobility workers with the same administrative functions as they would have from their desktop. The mobile device can also be used during in-person group meetings where the user may not have access to their Bria softphone or QC's Web management interface. - Open to All: Unlike traditional conferencing models where only selected employees have access to conferencing services, QC deploys conferencing as a shared application on the network, available to all users, at all times. - Calendar Integration: QC's Web management interface provides users with a meeting invite template. Users simply populate the template fields and QC exports an .ics file that can be sent to Microsoft Outlook and IBM Lotus Notes users for one-click integration with their calendars.

"In a global economy powered by knowledge workers and distributed workforces, audio conferencing has become a mission-critical service within the enterprise," said Rob Brown, Vice President of Customer Marketing, CounterPath. "Quick Conference allows businesses to give every employee access to enterprise-class conferencing services while actually reducing operating expenses by running those services off their PBX. In combination with QC's four-digit simplicity, our conferencing solution increases employee productivity, workplace satisfaction and levels of customer service, creating a winning proposition for both SMB and enterprise customers."

Quick Conference can be integrated with any PBX through SIP trunking or a SIP/TDM gateway and offers a range of security features to ensure the privacy and integrity of a conference call. QC can also be deployed as a managed hosted service, residing both inside and outside the enterprise network. The solution is available through CounterPath and select OEM partners.

Custom applications and plug-ins can be integrated with QC through the solution's Web Services architecture, designed to enable customer-driven extensibility. The solution also has flexible white-label options that allow customers to brand the offering with their own design preferences.

QC is available in eight languages: English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, German, Chinese and Arabic.

Kaiser Permanente and Microsoft Empower Consumers to Take Charge of Their HealthPilot program will allow voluntary data exchange from Kaiser Permanente's market-leading personal health record to Microsoft HealthVault

OAKLAND, Calif. and REDMOND, Wash., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Kaiser Permanente and Microsoft Corp. announced today that the two companies will pilot health data transfers between Kaiser Permanente's My Health Manager and the Microsoft HealthVault consumer health platform. Pairing two leaders in online health innovation, this pilot program is expected to unveil new strategies for expanding consumer access to online health information and management tools.

The pilot program will extend the functionality of the successful Kaiser Permanente personal health record, My Health Manager. Already, My Health Manager's more than 2 million users have convenient and easy online access to clinical information and health management tools, including e-mailing your doctor, online prescription refills and appointment scheduling. Connecting My Health Manager to the HealthVault platform will allow users to combine personal health information from Kaiser Permanente and a wide range of health and wellness management applications and devices such as blood pressure monitors.

"Providing new ways to manage their health online is one more way we can engage consumers in their care," said Anna-Lisa Silvestre, Vice President of Online Services at Kaiser Permanente. "We believe that Microsoft HealthVault will be a valuable supplement to our expanding set of online features."

"We're very pleased to work with Kaiser to deliver innovative online health services focused on improving the quality of care and the health and wellness of individuals and families," said Peter Neupert, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Health Solutions Group. "As the universe of online health applications continues to grow, people will learn how technology can empower them and their trusted providers to make the most informed decisions about their health and care."

HealthVault is designed to support Kaiser Permanente's transfer of My Health Manager data in adherence with federal standards and includes advanced safeguards to help protect members' personal information. HealthVault is built on the principle that people should have a copy of their own health information, have control over it and have the ability to privately share information with whomever they choose in a security-enhanced environment. In consultation with consumer privacy experts, Microsoft developed and implemented industry-leading health privacy commitments and stringent privacy principles for health technology providers connecting with HealthVault.

HealthVault automatically imports and exports using standards that are meaningful in the health care industry, such as WC3 eXtensible Markup Language (XML), HL7 Continuity of Care Document (CCD), ASTM Continuity of Care Record (CCR.), Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) and Common Connectivity Device.

A distinction between Kaiser Permanente's online health tool and others offered by insurers is the range and relevance of the information itself: In addition to containing benefits and eligibility information, My Health Manager also is powered by both clinical data entered by physicians, going much deeper than the standard claims-based PHRs on the market. For example, consumers can not only see a record of a test that they had, but also the result of that test and in some cases, direct feedback from their doctors about the result. Since both the patient and physician use the data in My Health Manager, consumers are actively using their Kaiser Permanente PHR to communicate with their physician and support their health goals.

Kaiser Permanente's 156,000 employees will be eligible to participate in the pilot program announced today. Participation in the employee pilot is voluntary and is designed to help ensure that the functionality allows easy access to individual personal health information, as well as enhancing the ability to manage that data. If the pilot is successful, the program will be expanded to include Kaiser Permanente's more than 8 million members.
