Enhanced Portal Offers Verizon Enterprise Customers Unified Wireline, Wireless ViewVerizon Enterprise Center Enables Customers to Manage their Accounts From Virtually Anywhere in the World

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon's enterprise customers now have a single online site where they can view and manage all their wired and wireless communications. Verizon Business and Verizon Wireless have joined forces to launch the Verizon Enterprise Center (VEC), a unified portal that gives large-business customers a seamless online experience.

Formerly known to Verizon Business customers as the Verizon Business Customer Center and to Verizon Wireless customers as My Business, the new VEC portal provides a single sign-on with integrated access, allowing customers to place orders, view and pay invoices, create trouble tickets and analytical reports, and monitor and manage their wired and wireless voice, data and IP services.

"State-of-the-art self service is becoming the new gold standard for customer service," said Nancy Gofus, chief marketing officer for Verizon Business. "The Verizon Enterprise Center is a useful and environmentally friendly online tool that helps customers do business with us whenever and wherever they choose, while giving them better command and control over their communications landscape."

VEC Helps Customers Control Costs, Improve Productivity, Achieve Environmental Goals

"The Verizon Enterprise Center offers enterprise customers a user- friendly, state-of-the-art tool to help them take control of their communications services," said Paul Hughes, vice president of enabling technologies for Yankee Group. "The new single login option for business and wireless customers is a true competitive differentiator for Verizon."

The VEC provides near real-time access to information so companies can make informed decisions about their domestic and global networks. It also helps Verizon Wireless and Verizon Business customers improve productivity, control costs by providing invoices electronically, and allows them to manage their network and control their inventory, while helping companies achieve their environmental-protection goals by eliminating paper and costly storage.

"This is a state-of-the-art account management tool that our domestic and global customers should find not only useful but cost effective," said Mike Lanman, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. "This is the tool our customers have asked for, and we are proud to be able to deliver it to them today."

    New Features Enhance Online Experience

Joint Verizon Wireless and Verizon Business customers can use a single logon and URL to quickly take advantage of a wide range of innovative capabilities, including:

-- Dashboard enhancements - The VEC Dashboard - a single, near real-time overview of network topology on a single screen - helps customers manage and monitor their voice, data and Internet network resources and troubleshoot areas of improvement. These customers can now receive severe-weather advisories via the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) right on their Dashboard, helping them plan for contingencies(1). This new feature provides continual updates, and customers can zoom in on the map to view specific information for individual locations. With customers' adoption of the Dashboard application climbing 526 percent in 2007, the company continues to add new features and functions to help further increase customer use of the portal. -- Updated repairs homepage - Provides customers a new method of creating, viewing and updating trouble tickets. Circuit testing and analysis (which includes the testing of local access circuits) and line testing are now also available within the repairs application. Descriptions of these tests are now available online, and results are displayed online, including performance statistics. This new ticket-tracking option was designed to expedite trouble resolution. -- Advanced e-commerce solutions - Customers can implement e-commerce solutions that streamline orders for both centralized telecommunications departments as well as authorized end users. Recent enhancements allow enterprise customers to have customized content, manager-approval options and third-party integration. Additionally, exclusive online offers and benefits are available periodically through the site. -- Account management - Customers save time managing wireless services through the VEC. In addition to accessing statements online, making payments, and using an array of advanced reporting options, customers can conduct real-time account management functions. This means many tasks that previously required a phone call to complete can now be completed directly online, in less time. (1) This feature is currently available only in the United States.

Pericom's New PCI Express(R) Packet Switch & Bridge Family Hurdles Low Power, Space & Cost BarriersSlimLine family is industry's first small-footprint, low-power LQFP solution that enables PCI Express connectivity in space-and-power sensitive volume applications.

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- PCI-SIG DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE -- Pericom Semiconductor Corporation , a worldwide preferred supplier of PCI Express(R) connectivity, signal integrity and timing technology, today announced the industry's first PCI Express (PCIe(R)) packet switch product family designed for power, size and value-sensitive applications, such as volume motherboard, wireless access points, docking stations, SOHO printers, digital TV, video surveillance, graphics and mobile applications. Pericom will display these new devices at the PCI-SIG(R) Developer's Conference, Santa Clara Convention Center, booth #6, Santa Clara, Calif., June 11-12, 2008.

"The market SAM for volume platforms across the computing, consumer, and networking market segments number in the hundreds of millions and are growing," said Jag Bolaria, senior analyst at semiconductor market research firm The Linley Group. "Most of these platforms already contain a PCI Express system interconnect. Demand for increased features and functionality will drive the need for PCIe switches and bridges and Pericom is well positioned to serve this new requirement with its small form factor, low power PCIe products."

The SlimLine product family offers two PCIe packet switches and one PCIe-to-PCI bridge. Engineered with PowerSave, the latest in green power-saving technology from Pericom, the design saves up to 30% of power in normal operating mode by allowing selectable power operation states. The proliferation of mobile platforms places greater demands on power and size; as form factors shrink, so does battery space and capability. PowerSave combines with low-cost, space-effective LQFP packaging to deliver to markets and applications where space, power and cost previously posed significant barriers for conventional PCIe products.

"We can offer increased advantages to our customers by using Pericom's SlimLine product family," said Wu Ling Chu, president of Tungson Ages Technologies Ltd., a world market leader in video surveillance products. "These unique products enable us to compete even more effectively and implement designs that give us a distinct market advantage."

"Our SlimLine family has gained excellent traction in our targeted market segments, with numerous early adopter customers recognizing the advantages of this industry first product family," said Bill Weir, Pericom's senior marketing director for Connect Products. "Our beta testing cycle includes Tier 1 customer volume platforms, all three products are fully PCI-SIG certified and compliant, and we are excited to soon move into the production ramp phase."

    SlimLine Features and Benefits: -- 4-port, 4-lane Packet Switch (PI7CX9X20404SL) -- 3-port, 3-lane Packet Switch (PI7C9X20303SL) -- Fully reversible PCIe to PCI bridge (PI7C9X111SL)

Packaged in LQFP technology, they are specifically designed for low power consumption, optimized PCB layout with low BOM cost, and fully meet the requirements of the latest PCI-SIG PCIe 1.1 and PCI 1.2 specifications.

Queens County Residents Benefit from Verizon Wireless Network ExpansionInvesting to Stay Ahead of Growing Demand for Wireless Calling, Data Access and Music as Area Businesses and Consumers Increasingly Rely on All-in-One Wireless Devices

ORANGEBURG, N.Y., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Wireless calling, text messaging and surfing the Mobile Web for email and information now are easier and faster for Verizon Wireless customers in Queens County, thanks to the activation of the company's newest cell site in Ozone Park.

The new Queens County cell site improves network coverage and capacity along Rockaway Boulevard from 131st Street to Lefferst Boulevard.

With the improved network coverage, more customers can use their wireless phones to send and receive email and text, picture and video messages; view high-quality videos; and access turn-by-turn directions, while enjoying clearer reception and fewer dropped calls.

"Reliable networks aren't built overnight," said Pat Devlin, president of the company's New York/New Jersey Metro Region. "Today's wireless customers demand so much more than voice service and this network expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to stay ahead of the curve. New and exciting multimedia devices, like the new enV2(TM) by LG for on-the-go texters and music fans equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard, now enable customers to carry PC-functionality in the palms of their hands. We will continue to efficiently invest in network enhancements to deliver the most reliable voice, data and multimedia services available."

Verizon Wireless has invested over $2 billion to enhance its New York/New Jersey Metro network and more than $45 billion across the nation since it was formed, to stay ahead of the growing demand for the company's voice, data and mobile entertainment services, like VZ Navigator (SM) (Version 4), which provides audible turn-by-turn directions and real time traffic information; V CAST Mobile TV, offering broadcast quality mobile television; and V CAST Music which allows customers to download full songs directly to their V CAST-capable wireless phones and Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP-based PCs.

Demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the first quarter of 2008 when the company added 1.5 million new customers, and continued its industry-leading customer loyalty rates. Verizon Wireless now serves more than 67.2 million customers nationwide. During the first quarter, the company delivered nearly 58 billion text messages and completed 34.6 million video and music downloads.

In the New York Metro area, 100 percent of Verizon Wireless' EVDO network has been upgraded with faster Revision A technology. Customers who use the company's flagship business data service, BroadbandAccess, now can interact with Web-based applications and access e-mail, everyday corporate data and the Internet at the highest wireless speeds available.

Nationally, Verizon Wireless' real-life test men and women drive 98 specially equipped vehicles nearly one million miles each year on Interstate, US and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high- population areas, based upon US Census counts, to confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than three million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

STMicroelectronics Announces Certified Design Flow to Accelerate Creation of Next-Generation SiliconDigital and mixed-signal design flows demonstrate significant productivity gains through multiple projects taped out with an advanced electronic system level (ESL) flow

GENEVA, June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- STMicroelectronics , a global leader in providing semiconductor solutions across the spectrum of microelectronics applications, today announced the deployment of a certified electronic system level (ESL) System-on-Chip reference design flow.

The design flow has been adopted and internally distributed following successful tape-outs of more than a dozen ASIC (application specific integrated circuit) designs with productivity gains from four to ten times faster than with traditional methods. Additionally, ST is also meeting increasing demands from industry leaders in consumer markets for complete system-level design platforms integrating digital and RF/mixed-signal technologies. A number of leading-edge ST products have been developed using this reference design flow, such as a 2-megapixel YUV CMOS image sensor and a highly-integrated image processing hardware accelerator for mobile phones.

Aimed at complex designs for next-generation consumer electronics equipment, ST's integrated ESL reference-design flow for complex digital CMOS designs combines high-level synthesis, sequential equivalence checking, power exploration and lint checkers that look for errors in code construction, thereby providing a complete methodology from ANSI C++ to RTL including certified integration ST's certified RTL-to-GDS2 design flow. As a result, hardware designers using ST's ESL reference flow are able to create and verify chips faster, with higher quality.

The advanced design flow is the result of more than three years of close collaboration with best-in-class EDA providers for each of the core ESL technologies. The ST design flow is integrated with Atrenta's industry-standard SpyGlass(R) for RTL lint checking and power analysis; the Mentor Graphics(R) Catapult(R) C Synthesis tool; and Calypto Design Systems' SLEC equivalence checker, providing highly efficient synthesis from pure ANSI C++ to RTL and formally verifying that the resulting RTL implementation is functionally correct. This advanced flow provides a comprehensive solution that includes: RTL lint sign-off; power estimation and exploration; C-to-C formal equivalence checking; C-to-RTL formal equivalence checking; SystemC model generation; and C-to-RTL high-level synthesis, thereby minimizing risk and shortening design cycles with 'real-world' productivity gains of between four and ten times.

Additionally, ST is successfully using its design and verification flow for RF/mixed-signal ICs to accelerate the development of sophisticated mixed-signal chipsets used in multi-band, multi-format wireless products. The RF/mixed-signal design flow is based on Agilent Technologies' Advanced Design System (ADS) software and Mentor Graphics' Catapult C synthesis technology.

Optimized ANSI-C code, which describes the digital element of the chip, is used in Agilent's ADS platform to verify the RF/mixed-signal design performance against published wireless standards. Once verified, this same optimized ANSI-C is then input into Mentor's Catapult C compiler to create very high-speed integrated circuit hardware description language (VHDL) that is used for gate-level synthesis into an ASIC.

"ST has developed one of the industry's most advanced system level design flows to manage the increasing complexity of today's System-on-Chip designs," said Philippe Magarshack, Vice-President and General Manager of Central CAD and Design Solutions at STMicroelectronics. "By integrating best-in-class tool technologies from Agilent, Atrenta, Calypto and Mentor with ST's own design expertise, our system-level design flows can build chips faster, with higher quality and productivity, allowing our customers to derive the maximum benefit from ST's advanced chip technologies."

STMicroelectronics Solution Showcased at DAC 2008

The STMicroelectronics certified ESL reference design flow will be featured at the Mentor Graphics booth at DAC 2008, June 9-12 at the Anaheim (CA) Convention Center. ST is also presenting on the Industrial Usage of ESL synthesis at the HLS Workshop: Back to the Future in Room 208A on June 8, 2008 at DAC.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

The need for social-computing tools is a natural extension of digital collaboration and is increasingly becoming incorporated into business productivity solutions. According to an April 2008 Forrester Research Inc. report, "Global Enterprise Market Forecast: 2007 to 2013," 56 percent of North American and European enterprises consider Web 2.0 to be a priority in 2008, and the market will increase from $764 million in 2008 to $4.6 billion by 2013. Microsoft is helping to lead that trend by providing the social- computing solutions and platforms today in SharePoint Server that balance end- user empowerment without sacrificing IT control.

"What we refer to today as Enterprise 2.0 will tomorrow just be considered a natural part of the way we all work," said Tom Rizzo, director of SharePoint Server at Microsoft. "SharePoint is leading the Enterprise 2.0 revolution by providing a comprehensive business productivity platform that combines traditional collaboration solutions with newer social-computing technologies in an enterprise-capable product. Using rich blog, wiki, RSS, mashup and social-networking solutions combined with the enterprise content management and search capabilities of SharePoint, SharePoint customers are well positioned to deliver real Enterprise 2.0 solutions today."

Partners Betting on Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Social-Networking Capabilities

Microsoft is tapping into the power of its network of partners to foster innovation that complements the existing social-computing technologies it delivers with SharePoint Server. As a result, more partners are turning to the productivity platform as the foundation for social-computing, as evidenced by a number of new social-computing technologies from the following companies:

-- Atlassian Pty. Ltd. Microsoft partner Atlassian offers the SharePoint Connector for Confluence, a leading enterprise wiki. Connectbeam, a Microsoft partner, is announcing Spotlight Connect for SharePoint, a bookmarking and tagging add-on module to its enterprise social search-and-discovery application. A demo of Connectbeam's integration with SharePoint Server can be found at http://www.connectbeam.com/demo/sharepointintegration. -- Leverage Software. Leverage Software's innovative Web 2.0 social-networking tools extend the reach of a SharePoint Server implementation and allow a company to connect with and learn from its customers, partners and corporate alumni, while maintaining the security and privacy demands of the enterprise. -- NewsGator Technologies Inc. NewsGator is announcing NewsGator Social Sites 2.0 plus Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, which delivers positive and tangible social-computing business results. -- Telligent Systems. Through its REST API, mail gateway, shared authentication and single sign-on, Community Server Evolution provides deep integration and interoperability among Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft Active Directory and Telligent Community Server, an industry-leading social-computing and online-community platform built on Microsoft .NET. -- Tomoye Corp. Tomoye is delivering a SharePoint Server-ready offering to enable organizations to deploy communities of practice using proven process and technology. -- WorkLight Inc. WorkLight is announcing its new WorkLight for SharePoint, which enables SharePoint Server users to more securely view and update information from SharePoint Server through familiar consumer tools such as Windows Vista gadgets and Facebook applications. Customers Benefit From SharePoint Server's Social-Computing Features

SharePoint Server also is rapidly becoming the collaboration tool of choice for many organizations. According to an April 2008 Forrester report, "Topic Overview: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007," 96 percent of enterprises are considering, planning on, in the process of or have already completed deploying at least some part of the Microsoft Office system server software. For example, Pfizer Inc., the world's largest research-based biomedical and pharmaceutical company, uses SharePoint Server blogs and wikis for collaborations among its worldwide employees.

"SharePoint gives us a powerful social-computing tool for collaboration," said David Biersach, Pfizer's associate director of Document and Collaboration Solutions. "We have teams distributed all over the world, and the ability to create wikis and blogs helps everyone stay on top of rapidly changing information and team dynamics in real time."

    Podcasting Kit for SharePoint

Demonstrating its commitment to bring the latest innovating trends of social-networking technologies to its customers and partners, Microsoft today announced the release of the PKS, a free, open source initiative that provides organizations with a centralized, easy-to-manage solution to create, manage and distribute podcasts. Built on the SharePoint Server and Microsoft Silverlight platforms, and compatible with the Zune, Windows Mobile devices, PCs and other devices that play podcasts, the PKS provides a new medium to record and distribute video and audio information via the Internet and intranet. The Microsoft sales organization implemented the PKS internally over the past year.

Additional features of the PKS allow users to do the following: -- Access audio or video podcasts on PCs, Windows Mobile devices, Zune devices and any other devices that play podcasts -- Share content by producing personal podcasts and publishing content on PKS -- Connect and engage with podcasters via integrated instant-messaging programs -- Find the most relevant content using a rating system, tags clouds and search functions -- Receive automatic podcast updates by subscribing to RSS feeds, fully compatible with Zune and other devices that play podcasts -- Play podcasts in real time using Silverlight and progressive playback

Many organizations are now using podcasting technology to provide company news, improve training and increase employee participation. Accenture, a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company, participated in the PKS pilot program, along with its client BT Group plc. Accenture is using and extending the kit's capabilities to offer Web 2.0-based learning and collaboration solutions, coupled with its experience in Microsoft technologies, to its global client base.

"Corporate and public-sector learning organizations have traditionally only addressed 20 percent of how employees learn," said Tom Hoglund, global lead of Accenture's Collaboration and Knowledge Management Practice. "The PKS, combined with Accenture's learning and collaboration experience, enables our clients to facilitate and accelerate learning exactly when and where it is needed, independent of location or device. AU Optronics to Exhibit a Wide Array of Leading Green Technologies

Free form technology to be showcased at Display Taiwan 2008

HSINCHU, Taiwan, June 9 /Xinhua-PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AU Optronics Corp. ("AUO" or the "Company") (TAIEX: 2409; NYSE: AUO) today unveiled the world's thinnest* 13.3-inch TFT-LCD, the world's lightest* 46-inch TFT-LCD with CCFL backlight, and the world's most power-saving 10.2-inch TFT-LCD. These new, leading-edge green technologies are designed to meet the growing worldwide demand for energy-saving 3C products. AUO will showcase its latest green technologies at Display Taiwan 2008 (June 11-13 in Taipei, Taiwan), together with its novel free form technology and in-cell multi-touch TFT-LCDs. AUO continues to pave the way for the future FPD industry through its green innovations and solutions.

With AUO's exhibition theme of "Experience the Innovation" at Display Taiwan 2008, Dr. LJ Chen, AUO's President and COO, noted, "We have recently announced many exciting technical advances to demonstrate our unflagging efforts under four major domains of green innovations, including Energy Saving, Material Saving, Environment Friendly and Lean Design. Our implementation of full level eco-designs provides clients and consumers with next-generation green displays. Furthermore, AUO will continue to leverage its innovations in making users better enjoy digital life, with multi-touch technology, curved displays, and free form technology. AUO strives to make LCDs with unlimited possibilities to be applied everywhere."

In addition to the latest ultra slim and energy-saving TFT-LCDs for TV applications, AUO debuted the world's lightest* 46-inch LCD TV module with CCFL backlight. The thickness of AUO 46" ultra light LCD TV module is a significant reduction of almost 40%, with its weight cut by over 30% comparing to conventional models, fulfilling the stylish design trends and wall-mount requirements for large-sized TVs. AUO has been developing a series of lightweight TFT-LCDs which can save the usage of steel and yet maintain the same mechanical strength and optical performance. By saving on material and transportation costs, the lightweight innovation is also reducing the impact on the environment.

AUO is also showcasing at Display Taiwan 2008 the world's thinnest* 13.3-inch TFT-LCD for NB applications. With polish techniques and material replacements, AUO has successfully developed this white LED Notebook PC panel with a thickness of merely 1.9mm (approximately equivalent to a U.S. five-cent coin) and a weight of just 138 grams. This ultra thin, extra light NB panel maintains 300 nits of high brightness and a 500:1 high contrast ratio.

For power efficiency, AUO has developed a single chip 10.2-inch TFT-LCD with only one source IC on chip and embedded gate IC function in array process. Comparing to traditional 10.2-inch panel, which have 3 source ICs and 1 gate IC on chip, AUO's 10.2-inch TFT-LCD with GOA (Gate on Array) technology saves almost 50% of the IC costs, but still retains the same performance and gives up to 60% savings in terms of power consumption.

To meet the dominating design trends of the human interface in the CE market, AUO is debuting the world's first* 8-inch charge-sensing in-cell multi-touch LCD at Display Taiwan 2008. Unlike touch panels currently in the market, AUO's in-cell multi-touch TFT-LCD integrates touch function features into the TFT manufacturing process without adding an additional glass. In addition, AUO is demonstrating two different types of its in-cell multi-touch technology through 4.3-inch applications. The voltage-sensing type multi-touch technology, available with either stylus input or nail input, can provide better optical performance and anti-glare features with up to 8 point coordinates. The charge-sensing type is more similar to projected capacitive touch panels, offering pressure-less finger input as well as multi-touch gesture input recognition, which make it a perfect solution for highly interactive applications.

As the consumer demands for style are also increasing, in addition to curved display technology, AUO has successfully developed an elliptic shaped LCD display with display sizes of 54mm (height) x 41mm (width). The elliptic shaped screen is ideal for mobile phones which require ergonomic designs. The novel shape can also be applied to various handheld devices with compact, space-saving requirements. The free form displays can bring more flexibility and innovation to product designs. In addition to the outlook design advantage, the free-shaped LCDs can also improve the space efficiency of the display area and further reduce the materials used in the manufacturing process.

AUO is also revealing other technologies at Display Taiwan 2008, as listed below:

Large-sized Advanced Technologies include: -- AMVA 3 High Static Contrast Ratio -- Full HD 120Hz with ME/MC -- Ultra Thin High Dynamic Contrast with LED -- sRGB with Yellow-WLED -- Ultra Slim 42" LCD TV with LED Small and Medium-sized Advanced Technologies include: -- sRGB Gamut Mapping Technology -- Grease Free & Touch Mura Free -- Ultra Thin 0.63mm

Radware Optimizes VoIP Network Reliability for Virtual PBX(TM)Offering a Cost-Effective Solution for Greater VoIP Scalability, Flexibility and Network Redundancy

MAHWAH, New.Jersey, June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Radware , the leading provider of integrated application delivery solutions for business-smart networking, today announced Virtual PBX, inventor and leading supplier of hosted PBX (private branch exchange) services, has deployed AppDirector, Radware's intelligent application delivery controllers (ADC) to scale its Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) infrastructure and build cost-effective fault tolerant SIP (session initiation protocol) proxy servers; enabling enhanced end-user service within a fully-redundant communications environment.

As the enterprise telephony market trends are moving from the traditional PSTN (public switched telephone network) toward VoIP service, many service providers risk a loss of reliability during this migration; resulting in dissatisfied customers and a major loss in revenue. To optimize network dependability during its own VoIP transition, and ensure customer satisfaction through high-availability and by lowering the cost for terminating and originating phone calls through IP, Virtual PBX looked to Radware to assist in building fault-tolerant SIP proxies and RADIUS servers, and that would allow the scaling of the number of SIP/TDM gateways that would process the traffic to accommodate growth.

Radware's award-winning AppDirector solution is known to enhance the delivery of applications over IP networks by bridging the gap between applications and networks. The solution has enabled Virtual PBX to deploy multiple independent SIP proxy servers that all "talk" to the same SQL back-end datastore, without the need to pay any additional licensing fees - a true cost benefit of deploying the Radware solution.

"Radware's AppDirectors were the only load balancers that we found that could truly manage any kind of IP traffic," said Stephen Lange, Chief Technology Officer, Virtual PBX. "We worked with other providers who promised that their products could load balance SIP and RTP traffic, but they did not work to our satisfaction. Also, the fact that we could deploy AppDirector in a fault-tolerant active-standby pair was a deciding factor."

When looking at the business case, AppDirector allowed Virtual PBX the flexibility to move calls throughout its network using IP; enabling the Company to bring new media services online easily, yielding new revenue streams - all the while presenting a single IP end-point that any carrier could drive calls to. To ensure new media services would integrate with its network, AppDirector allowed Virtual PBX to take servers and gateways down in order to perform interoperability testing or maintenance without impacting service or causing outages to its clients.

"By working closely with Virtual PBX, we began to understand their business-critical pain points, and how best to overcome these challenges - including their need for greater capacity," said Bob Simpson, VP Service Provider Business, Radware. "Our AppDirector solution has allowed Virtual PBX to scale its VoIP infrastructure, without the need to forklift existing hardware - a major difference between Radware and the competition."

Critical to scaling Virtual PBX's VoIP network, AppDirector has enabled the company to build distributed farms of servers and gateways, where capacity could simply be added by bringing in new servers or gateways. This was an attractive scaling mechanism for Virtual PBX, as they had already built redundant farms of voice nodes answering PSTN calls. With AppDirector, Virtual PBX continued to provide high-availability for both PSTN and VoIP traffic using the same paradigm.

2collab Survey Reveals That Scientists and Researchers are "All Business" With Social Applications

AMSTERDAM, June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- - Social Media Will Have Major Influence on key Aspects of Research Within Five Years

2collab (http://www.2collab.com/), the research collaboration platform from Elsevier, the world's leading publisher of science, technology and medical (STM) information, announced today the results of a survey, asking researchers about the role of social media in their professional lives. The survey, which yielded over 1,800 responses, revealed that scientists are using blogs, wikis, and social networking and bookmarking applications primarily for professional reasons. Results show that these social media applications have provided scientists and researchers with additional resources to help them collaborate, connect, share and discover information.

2collab surveyed science, medical and technical information professionals working in academia and government institutions to establish exactly what influence new web applications are having on the way scientific research is conducted. Over 50% of respondents see web-based social applications playing a key role in shaping the future of research. The largest influence will be on critical analysis and evaluation of research data, professional networking and collaboration, dissemination of research output, career development, as well as grant application and funding.

Results show that many researchers believe social applications will have a major influence on the future of research. One respondent, an Environmental Science researcher based in Spain commented, "Social media and electronic journals will be the future of scientific information dissemination. Current scientific journals must not disappear but the business model will change."

Comments from survey respondents identified several issues need to be addressed before mass acceptance by the research community is possible - namely the need for specialist tools, higher security, and validation of users. However, these concerns were not seen as insurmountable obstacles, and many anticipated tremendous potential for social media. "Existing social networks are mostly used for casual social interaction between young people. In order to be more relevant to academia, networks with professional credibility and accountability will need to develop," writes another respondent, a Canada-based associate professor of Biochemistry, Genetics & Molecular Biology.

"While it is clear that scientists and researchers will continue to use traditional sources for information discovery, the survey indicates that social media applications will provide additional indicators of quality and discovery," states Brant Emery, development manager for 2collab. "In an era where information travels fastest digitally, online applications will offer these professionals what one researcher stated as a "source of power." Creating these online scientific communities gives everyone a chance to offer their voices and participate in research, thus increasing the flow of communication, access to knowledge and helping accelerate scientific discovery."

The survey report is available upon request by emailing the media contact, Lauren Hillman.

2collab Survey Reveals That Scientists and Researchers are "All Business" With Social Applications

    AMSTERDAM, June 9 /PRNewswire/ --

    - Social Media Will Have Major Influence on key Aspects of Research Within Five Years

2collab (http://www.2collab.com), the research collaboration platform from Elsevier, the world's leading publisher of science, technology and medical (STM) information, announced today the results of a survey, asking researchers about the role of social media in their professional lives.

TSMC Unified DFM Architecture Promises Improved Yields and Accelerated Time-to-MarketFirst steps toward 32nm developed through design ecosystem collaboration

HSINCHU, Taiwan, June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Ltd. today unveiled a new Unified Design For Manufacturing (UDFM) architecture that targets 32nm process technology and smaller geometries and improves yields, lowers design costs and accelerates time-to-market and time-to-volume.

The newly-created UDFM provides a unified, encapsulated access to TSMC foundry data and was developed in collaboration with EDA vendors and other design infrastructure partners. The TSMC UDFM is also one of the key collaborative components of the company's recently unveiled Open Innovation Platform(TM). Open Innovation Platform(TM) is a platform for innovations, hosted by TSMC and open to TSMC customers and partners. It is built on TSMC's design-enabling building blocks and an ecosystem interface.

The TSMC UDFM architecture includes a new DFM Design Kit (DDK) that, for the first time encapsulates, an embedded DFM software engine with an interoperable API in addition to the process-related DFM data and models. UDFM brings an exact copy of TSMC's factory tool chain and process models into IC design tool chains, providing chip designers with deeper access into more of TSMC's manufacturing data than ever before.

This "copy exact" method compensates for increasing manufacturing variances in advanced process technologies, radically improves design alignment between simulated hotspots and actual manufacturing hotspots, and delivers timely accuracy to the design ecosystem. The new DFM architecture handles very large DFM dataset and design complexity, resulting in reduced design cycle time and faster time-to-market and volume.

"TSMC is laying the groundwork for 32nm process technologies with the industry's first Unified DFM framework," said S.T. Juang, senior director of design infrastructure marketing at TSMC. "Through deep and extensive DFM data mining and collaborative development with our design ecosystem partners, TSMC UDFM allows our customers access to accurate manufacturing representation, enabling next generation chip designs to take full advantage of our advanced nanometer process technologies."

    Availability

TSMC's Unified DFM DDK will be available in early Q3 2008 to registered members through the TSMC customer portal.

    TSMC Open Innovation Platform(TM)

Unified DFM is a component of TSMC's Open Innovation Platform(TM), that promotes the speedy implementation of innovation among the semiconductor design community, TSMC's ecosystem partners, and the company's IP, design implementation, DFM capabilities, process technology, and backend services. A key element of the Open Innovation Platform(TM) is a set of ecosystem interfaces and collaborative components initiated and supported by TSMC that more efficiently empowers innovation throughout the supply chain and enables the creation and sharing of newly created value. TSMC's Active Accuracy Assurance (AAA) initiative is a critical part of the Open Innovation Platform(TM), providing the accuracy and quality required by the ecosystem interfaces and collaborative components.

SST Strengthens Leadership Position as Key Supplier of Firmware Hub Products For Intel-Based Embedded EcosystemSST Becomes Leading Supplier of 8- and 16-Mbit Devices for Intel-Based Embedded Architecture Applications

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SST (Silicon Storage Technology, Inc.) , a leader in flash memory technology, today announced a strategic plan to continue its long-standing status as a predominant supplier of Firmware Hub (FWH) BIOS memory components for Intel-based technology applications. SST is committed to supporting embedded customers' needs with both 8- and 16-Mbit FWH devices through 2011 and possibly beyond. These device densities are expected to address the majority of the FWH used in the Intel P6 Architecture, Intel NetBurst Architecture at the 130 nm and 90 nm processes, and the Intel Core MicroArchitecture at the 65 nm process, during that extended timeframe.

SST established itself as a leading independent supplier of FWH memory devices in 2001, less than a year after it became the first Intel licensee to implement the FWH products for Intel's 800 Series Hub Architecture chipsets in March 2000. Although the industry has moved beyond FWH for traditional consumer PC applications where shorter product life cycles are typical, the FWH architecture continues to flourish for embedded platforms, where five- to seven-year product life cycles are the norm. With its continued support of the FWH architecture for embedded applications, SST will extend its leadership position in FWH BIOS to more than a decade.

"We've always been a leader in BIOS as well as a memory device partner for PC platforms. To that end, we are very pleased to be able to extend our Firmware Hub product offering for the next several years," said Paul Lui, senior vice president, Memory and Special Products Business Unit, SST. "As the leading supplier of 8- and 16-Mbit Firmware Hub memories to the marketplace, we felt compelled to support the industry's embedded community."

"Intel will continue to manufacture Intel processors for embedded devices that only boot via the Firmware Hub," said Joe Jensen, general manager of Intel's Embedded Computing Group. "This is consistent with our commitment to support our embedded products for a minimum of seven years and we want to ensure the embedded 'ecosystem' of the long-life availability of Firmware Hub devices from a reliable supplier such as SST."

The embedded application platforms for FWH include automotive infotainment systems, gaming, medical, industrial control, communications, wireless, print imaging and military/aerospace, to name a few. In a majority of those applications, product development often takes years and the resulting product life times can extend beyond a half-dozen years. Thus, customers in these arenas need to ensure that components incorporated into their embedded designs remain available and in reasonably high volume for years. With SST as the leading supplier of 8- and 16-Mbit FWH memories, today's announcement is that much more significant for the embedded system design community.

    About SST's Firmware Hub Products

SST's Firmware Hub flash memory products incorporate the proprietary FWH interface protocol owned by Intel Corp. and are read-compatible to the Intel 82802 Firmware Hub product. The Intel 82802 Firmware Hub is one of the chips in Intel's 800 Series (810, 810e, 815e, 815ep, 820, 840 and 850) Hub Architecture chipsets that optimizes the performance of computer systems based on Intel's microprocessors.

SST's 8-Mbit and 16-Mbit FWH devices are part of the company's 49 Series products and are based on the core feature set of SST's MPF (Multi-Purpose Flash) series, a family that was created using the SST SoftPartition uniform sector architecture and the simple CMOS-compatible SuperFlash manufacturing process. Using the SoftPartition architecture of the uniform 4-KByte sectors and uniform 64-KByte blocks, the 8- and 16-Mbit, 49 Series FWH products allow embedded system designers to have better software granularity, which improves memory utilization. This improved memory utilization allows designers to fit the system BIOS and video BIOS firmware in a smaller density memory array than those of typical flash memory devices without the SoftPartition capability. Therefore, the SoftPartition-based 49 Series FWH products enable the Intel 800 Series Hub Architecture chipset to enhance the system performance while reducing the overall system cost.
