New Tellabs High Density Port Shelf Packs More PunchNewest port shelf increases cross-connect capacity while saving money, space and energy
LAS VEGAS, June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NXTcomm08 -- With the explosion of video and wireless traffic, service providers must squeeze even more capacity out of their networks. Thanks to the new high-density (HD) 384 port shelf on the Tellabs(R) 5500 digital cross-connect system, service providers can save money and floor space, while easily increasing capacity.
The HD384 port shelf enables service providers to obtain 32 times the port densities of older Tellabs 5500 Digital Cross-Connect systems. It also makes the system more energy efficient.
More capacity, less charge
In exactly the same amount of room in the rack, the HD384 port shelf delivers 400 percent more capacity than the current HD96 port shelf. In addition, each circuit of the new port shelf sips its power sparingly. Each one uses up to 80% less energy than previous circuits. So service providers get more capacity for less energy.
Its capacity's huge, and it's easy to use
The HD384 port shelf is easy to integrate into existing networks. The shelf connects to all Tellabs 5500 systems and can coexist with previous deployed versions of the shelf on the same rack. So it can be deployed easily, without any loss of service or changes to other equipment. The HD384 port shelf also makes it economical to modernize existing networks, especially when replacing the standard density optical port shelves.
"Our customers require a high-density optical port shelf that saves money and floor space," said Brian McConnell, vice president and general manager of bandwidth management solutions for Tellabs. "The new HD384 port shelf delivers by greatly increasing capacity and using less electricity per circuit, making it a great solution for existing and new customers."
The Tellabs 5500 digital cross-connect system is an integral part of many service provider networks. The capacity-raising HD384 port shelf will begin making networks greener and leaner in August 2008.

http://www.micrel.com/ProductList.do.

With "check your drive time," drivers simply type in where they are and where they want to go. GREENCASTLE, Ind., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless today announced the completion of a major network expansion into Putnam County. Now, customers in Greencastle, at DePauw University and in other surrounding communities can make voice calls; send and receive email and text, picture and video messages; access the Internet; view high-quality videos; and download music, games and ringtones on the nation's most reliable wireless network.
The company's multi-million dollar network investment, which includes building 16 new cell sites, also provides continuous coverage along Interstate 70 across Indiana.
In addition to Greencastle and DePauw University, the network expansion improves Verizon Wireless' voice and data network coverage in the following areas:
-- Along U.S. Route 40 in Putnam County
-- Along U.S. Route 231 between Greencastle and Spencer
-- Along State Road 42 in southern Putnam County
-- In Putnamville
-- In Reelsville
-- In Cloverdale
The expansion also includes the rollout of the company's high-speed wireless broadband network. Now, Verizon Wireless customers living in and traveling throughout Putnam County can enjoy two prime services: BroadbandAccess and V CAST.
BroadbandAccess
Based on Evolution-Data Optimized Revision A (EV-DO Rev. A) network technology, BroadbandAccess provides mobile workers with the ability to access their corporate information as if they were attached to this data via a high-speed wired connection but with the freedom of true mobility. Developed with a range of users in mind, the service enables large enterprises, small to medium-sized businesses and mobile professionals to conduct business anytime, anywhere in the BroadbandAccess coverage area via a secure, true high-speed data connection.
With BroadbandAccess, business customers, residents and visitors can expect average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits per second and average upload speeds of 500 kbps to 800 kbps. That means they can download a 1 megabyte email attachment-the equivalent of a small PowerPoint(R) presentation or a large PDF file-in about eight seconds and upload the same-sized file in less than 13 seconds.
BroadbandAccess also enables Verizon Wireless customers to download files significantly faster than customers of wireless service providers that use different broadly deployed network technologies. Furthermore, customers who travel outside the enhanced BroadbandAccess coverage area with an EV-DO device will switch seamlessly to the company's NationalAccess service.
"Our enhanced BroadbandAccess service gives our customers three key advantages in wireless communication-speed, mobility and security," said Greg Haller, president-Indiana/Kentucky/Michigan Region, Verizon Wireless. "With these advantages comes an increase in productivity and bottom-line business benefits."
V CAST: Video and Music
The company's wireless broadband network also enables its V CAST multimedia services, which offer customers the ability to download full-song tracks, play cutting-edge 3D games and stream video clips straight to the handset with top transmission speeds. With content updated daily, customers can watch dozens of on-demand videos, including breaking news, weather updates, sports highlights and the hottest entertainment clips.
With V CAST Music, Verizon Wireless has built a massive full-song mobile music store that contains more than 3 million songs-from well-known as well as independent artists-that customers can download over-the-air, directly onto their V CAST Music-enabled wireless phones.
"Our customers choose Verizon Wireless and stay with us because we deliver on our promise to provide the most reliable network," said Haller. "This major expansion across Putnam County reflects that commitment. We'll continue investing in our network here in Indiana as well as across the nation so that our customers can rely on their wireless phones everywhere they go."
These new cell sites are part of Verizon Wireless' continual effort to expand coverage, increase capacity and enhance the quality of its wireless voice and data network in Indiana and throughout the country. Verizon Wireless has invested more than $45 billion since it was formed-$5.5 billion on average every year-to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. Nearly $870 million of this investment has been spent in Indiana since 2000. In 2007, the company invested more than $136 million in Indiana network improvements.

Riding Wavelengths Down the Convergence HighwayTellabs accelerates optical transport networks
LAS VEGAS, June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NXTcomm08 -- Service providers need networks without speed limits. They need unlimited bandwidth to deliver video, business and mobile services. Simpler and more scalable Carrier Ethernet capabilities on the Tellabs(R) 7100 optical transport system (OTS) surpass networks' current speed limits.
Clear the road
Providers must upgrade existing transport networks and provide Carrier Ethernet services to stay ahead of user needs. They need to cost-effectively ensure carrier-class reliability, which means their networks must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The new capabilities of the Tellabs 7100 OTS, including the Tellabs(R) 7100 Nano(TM) OTS, make deployments simpler and more efficient -- with lower start-up costs.
-- ROADM DWDM optical network components formerly mandatory are now
decoupled and are optional on the Tellabs 7100 OTS family. The
Ethernet, SONET and SDH capabilities can be deployed without ROADM
DWDM. This new flexibility enables simplified provisioning and reduced
start-up costs for smaller applications, while maintaining the ability
to easily and cost-effectively upgrade to ROADM DWDM support as demand
increases. The on-ramp to the convergence highway has never been
smoother.
-- ITU-T Recommendation G.709 Optical Transport Network (OTN) based
transport support will enable transparent high-capacity services.
Providers can carpool their Carrier Ethernet, video, Storage Area
Network, SONET and SDH services on a shared infrastructure, scaling
capacity as needed.
-- Additional new capabilities enable more traffic to travel along optical
highway lanes. Enhancements to traditional Ethernet over SONET/SDH
transport enable a 20% increase in Gigabit Ethernet port capacity, and
support 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports as well. More traffic on existing
lanes improves service and network efficiency.
"These new capabilities of the Tellabs 7100 OTS enable our customers to upgrade their networks quickly," said Mark Pashan, vice president and general manager of optical transport products for Tellabs. "Ethernet services are more flexible, and users receive more bandwidth exactly where it's needed as network demands increase."
The new Tellabs 7100 OTS capabilities will help customers win the race to advanced Carrier Ethernet services by the end of 2008.

Tellabs Keeps Laying Down That Broadband BeatIndustry-leading optical transport system has wave after wave of hits
LAS VEGAS, June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NXTcomm08 -- The world's hunger for streaming high-quality video, instant online gaming and reliable business services is changing the way service providers design their networks. The Tellabs(R) 7100 optical transport system (OTS) tops the charts by revolutionizing the way service providers deliver the bandwidth to meet these demands.
Churning out the hits
In just over two years, Tellabs has:
-- Shipped more than 10,600 wavelengths on almost 3,000 systems, enabling
the delivery of all types of transport services;
-- Shipped more than 4,200 degrees of ROADM, enabling providers to
instantly provision bandwidth anywhere at any time; and
-- Shipped more than 3,400 integrated add-drop multiplexer (ADM) pairs,
enabling providers to save time and money by reducing the number of
elements in their networks.
On the ROADM again
In July 2006, Tellabs announced that Verizon chose the Tellabs 7100 OTS with ROADM to simplify the optical transport system in its all-fiber network that delivers FiOS Internet and FiOS TV services to millions of customers in 17 states. Now Verizon Business uses the Tellabs 7100 OTS to deliver flexible bandwidth to banks, hospitals, universities and other businesses.
And in the first quarter of 2008, Tellabs recognized revenue from a new customer in North America. In fact, Tellabs 7100 system revenue quadrupled in 2007, exceeding our most optimistic forecasts.
New release coming soon
To continue to help service providers meet their customers' needs; Tellabs is adding new capabilities to the system. These enhancements enable providers to make their Ethernet networks more scalable. Riding Wavelengths Down the Convergence Highway
LAS VEGAS, June 16 /PRNewswire/ --
- Tellabs accelerates optical transport networks
NXTcomm08 -- Service providers need networks without speed limits. They
need unlimited bandwidth to deliver video, business and mobile services.
Simpler and more scalable Carrier Ethernet capabilities on the Tellabs(R)
7100 optical transport system (OTS) surpass networks' current speed limits.
Clear the road
Providers must upgrade existing transport networks and provide Carrier
Ethernet services to stay ahead of user needs. They need to cost-effectively
ensure carrier-class reliability, which means their networks must be
available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The new capabilities of the Tellabs
7100 OTS, including the Tellabs(R) 7100 Nano(TM) OTS, make deployments
simpler and more efficient -- with lower start-up costs.
-- Additional new capabilities enable more traffic to travel along
optical highway lanes. Enhancements to traditional Ethernet over
SONET/SDH transport enable a 20% increase in Gigabit Ethernet port
capacity, and support 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports as well. More traffic
on existing lanes improves service and network efficiency.
"These new capabilities of the Tellabs 7100 OTS enable our customers to
upgrade their networks quickly," said Mark Pashan, vice president and general
manager of optical transport products for Tellabs. "Ethernet services are
more flexible, and users receive more bandwidth exactly where it's needed as
network demands increase."
The new Tellabs 7100 OTS capabilities will help customers win the race to
advanced Carrier Ethernet services by the end of 2008.

Raytheon Teams with US Navy, Agilent to Develop Ground-Breaking Test Equipment
TUCSON, Ariz., June 16, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company , teaming with the U.S. Navy and Agilent Technologies Inc. , has implemented the Presidio Automated Test Line, a breakthrough in testing automation for production of Raytheon's Standard Missile 2.
The SM-2 Presidio represents an innovative change to the testing process, not only for Standard Missile, but, ultimately, for Raytheon's entire Missile Systems business. It replaces 17 test positions and 27 environmental conditioning systems with a single automated installation. Presidio also combines many advanced commercial technologies, including robotic material handling, multi-plane vibration, universal solid-state test interfaces and new test executive software.
"The Navy benefits significantly from the greater test efficiency that Presidio provides," said Scott Reiter, the Navy's SM-2 project director. "This gets missiles in the hands of our sailors that much faster. It is another example of the great partnership that exists between the Navy and Raytheon on SM-2."
The system is designed to test new and failed units using a single configuration test station, eliminating the need for the multiple test sets previously required. It also reduces floor space by 50 percent, vibration test time by 66 percent and cuts overall cycle time from 21 days to less than seven hours.
"Presidio sets the stage for automation across our business," said Rick Nelson, vice president of Operations for Raytheon Missile Systems. "It marks a vital first step in modernizing and streamlining all of our operations processes."
The project combined Raytheon's product applications knowledge with Agilent Technologies' automation and measurement expertise to bring the best available technology to the production floor in 14 months -- a record for a test system of this magnitude and complexity. "The speed at which this project was implemented stands as a tribute to the joint Navy, Raytheon and Agilent team," continued Nelson.
Raytheon Company, with 2007 sales of $21.3 billion, is a technology leader specializing in defense, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world. With a history of innovation spanning 86 years, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing; effects; and command, control, communications and intelligence systems, as well as a broad range of mission support services. With headquarters in Waltham, Mass., Raytheon employs 72,000 people worldwide.

EMBARQ Logistics(TM) Wins TEC's Bay Springs Telephone Company Contract
OVERLAND PARK, Kan., June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- TEC, the holding company for numerous telecoms, awarded EMBARQ Logistics(TM) a contract to help its Bay Springs Telephone Company make improvements to its network. Bay Springs Telephone is located in Bay Springs, Miss. With this upgrade, Bay Spring Telephone will be positioned to support the bandwidth demands placed on it by its customers with an advanced Ethernet/IP infrastructure.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20060516/EMBARQLOGO)
"We are excited about working with EMBARQ Logistics(TM) because they brought us a solution that dramatically reduces the time to make the upgrades, cuts costs and mitigates service outages," said Brent Fisher, director of local exchange carrier operations for TEC. "The benefits are a tremendous advantage and become even more important for small telecoms like Bay Springs."
Instead of installing completely new cabinets, cables and other equipment which can take several months, EMBARQ Logistics(TM) recommended retrofitting the current equipment by switching service to a temporary cabinet at each location, updating the permanent cabinets and then switching service back over to the updated equipment. What would normally take six months to do at one site will only take three days, saving time and effort.
"TEC's trust in EMBARQ Logistics(TM) for this job underscores our technical expertise, the breadth of our portfolio of services and the rich relationships we have with manufacturers who provide best-in-class, quality products," said Desi O'Grady, director of RBOC Sales at EMBARQ Logistics(TM). "This work shows what can be accomplished when you bring the right partners to the table."
TEC and EMBARQ Logistics(TM) are working with ADTRAN, a leading provider of networking and communications equipment, for the upgrade, using the manufacturer's Total Access 5000 multi-service access and aggregation platform.
"We are very pleased to work with EMBARQ Logistics(TM) and TEC on the upgrade of Bay Springs and the other TEC companies' properties by using the Total Access 5000," said P. As part of the training and market-readiness program, the new systems integrators completed training, which ensures that service providers around the world will have various high-quality vendors to assist them with deployments of their Microsoft Mediaroom-powered connected TV service offerings. The expansion of the Microsoft Mediaroom technology ecosystem to include additional systems integrators reflects a growing interest in world- class IPTV services from broadband operators of various sizes and geographic locations.
HP, Tech Mahindra and 180Squared have also demonstrated their commitment to ensuring successful deployments of Microsoft Mediaroom-connected TV services by working with Microsoft to build center of excellence laboratories around the world. These facilities are being established to provide service providers with resources to take their IPTV operations from trial stages to commercial deployment.
"Alcatel-Lucent and Microsoft commenced a strategic reseller and systems integration relationship to accelerate the worldwide availability of IPTV, and this successful relationship remains in place," said Christine Heckart, general manager of marketing for Microsoft Mediaroom. "We are pleased to further enhance the Mediaroom technology ecosystem with the addition of deployment service companies HP, Tech Mahindra and 180Squared to support service providers scaling their differentiated connected TV services. Alcatel-Lucent has partnered with Microsoft on our largest Mediaroom IPTV deployments and remains our only end-to-end IPTV system integrator."
With the help of these companies, Microsoft Mediaroom will continue to drive TV innovation worldwide. Fourteen service providers are commercially deploying Microsoft Mediaroom-powered services to offer advanced connected TV services to their customers. Microsoft Mediaroom-enabled advanced TV features include DVR Anywhere, which gives consumers the flexibility to watch recorded programs on any TV in their home, instant channel changing, and PC-to-TV photo and music sharing. The Microsoft Mediaroom platform, which reached 1 million subscriber homes in the first quarter of 2008, is now powering connected TV services on more than 2 million TV sets worldwide. It took Mediaroom 18 months to reach its first million TVs and only five months, more than three times faster, to reach its second million TVs.

EMCORE Announces Sampling and Demo of 40 Gigabit Per Second Connects Cables for High-Performance Computing
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EMCORE Corporation , a leading provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the broadband, fiber optic, satellite and terrestrial solar power markets, today announced sampling and demo of 40 gigabit per second (Gb/s) fiber-optic transceiver-based cables that will be showcased with Mellanox's switches and adapters at the International Supercomputing Conference.
EMCORE Connects Cables, formerly Intel Connects Cables and recently acquired from Intel Corporation, are specifically designed for high-performance computing (HPC) and other large data center applications. The 40 Gb/s QSFP form factor cables are currently sampling and will be commercially available beginning 2009 to support the deployment of large Petaflop scale HPC clusters. EMCORE is currently offering 20 Gb/s cables with transmission distances of up to 30 meters. This new line of 40 Gb/s products offer faster links and longer transmission, lighter in weight, and more reliable in performance than the traditional copper cable interconnects:
-- Longer in Distance: 1 to 100 meter lengths for large Teraflop and
Petaflop size clusters.
-- Faster in Speed: The QDR (quad data rate) cables offer 40 Gb/s
transmission data rate. Together with the 10 and 20 Gb/s cables already
commercially available EMCORE Connects Cables expands our product
portfolio.
-- Lighter in Weight: At 84% lighter and 83% smaller than 24 AWG copper
interconnects, EMCORE Connects Cables improve airflow and system
cooling while reducing system installation and maintenance costs.
-- Reliable in Performance: With extremely low bit error rates (BER) of
10-15, EMCORE Connects Cables mean less dropped packets, dead links and
longer up times on clusters.
"EMCORE Connects Cables continue to lead the HPC optical fiber interconnect market segment with the sampling of these ultra-high bandwidth cables," said Stephen Krasulick, Vice President and General Manager of EMCORE Digital Products. "We have worked with Mellanox Technologies closely on the testing of these products and are extremely pleased to be able to publicly demonstrate their capabilities with the new 40 Gb/s Mellanox ConnectX* adapters. EMCORE foresees a rapid growth of the optical fiber interconnect market with the adoption of 40 Gb/s data rates and the move to huge Petascale systems."
"We are excited to see EMCORE showcase their 40 Gb/s InfiniBand cables," said Thad Omura, Vice-President of Product Marketing at Mellanox. "Cables like these from EMCORE expand the reach of our ConnectX(R) adapters and systems based on the InfiniScale(R) IV 40Gb/s InfiniBand switch silicon, and will make it easier to build large clusters that support state-of-the-art commercial and scientific HPC applications."
Since the introduction by Intel at ISC in June of 2007, EMCORE Connects Cables have been enthusiastically embraced by the HPC community throughout the world, most notably in the 120 Teraflop Tata-Computational Research Labs, Pune, India. This product was recognized as #4 on the November 2007's Top500 list. EMCORE Connects Cables are respected for their performance, high-quality of manufacture, and excellent reliability. After closing the transaction in April of 2008, EMCORE has stressed the same commitment to performance, manufacturing quality, and customer satisfaction.
A live demonstration of these cables and the Mellanox Technologies ConnectX* adapters can be seen in the Intel booth at the International Supercomputing Conference, Dresden, Germany - June 17-19, 2008.
