DUBAI, June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- KIT digital (BULLETIN BOARD: KITD) , a global provider of IPTV enablement technology and video-centric interactive marketing solutions, is working with the world's leading sports news agency, SNTV, to produce and package coverage of Euro2008 and the Summer Olympics for global broadband and mobile providers.

Through Kamera, KIT's wholly owned subsidiary, a variety of global media and telecommunications companies have subscribed to SNTV's Euro2008 content package, including Polkomtel (Poland), 3 Austria, Sportal (Germany and Switzerland), Infostrada/Sportsplaza (Netherlands), Tiscali (UK and Italy), Yonhap (South Korea), Viasat (Bulgaria), Dogus Media Group (Turkey) and CBC (Canada). KIT digital's service was launched on June 1st, and runs through the remainder of the tournament.

As part of the Euro2008 package, subscribers receive 10 daily clips of the events online or on their mobile handsets, including pre- and post-match reactions and interviews with players, tournament organizers and fans. SNTV, which is a joint venture between IMG and The Associated Press, generates content 24/7 throughout the Euro2008 tournament and KIT digital ingests, packages, and translates this content for customers within each geographic market. SNTV and KIT digital share revenues from the Euro2008 content package -- which has been a clear success to date. The Euro2008 games are being delivered in English, German, Russian and Polish, through this agreement, making this the first time the event is being translated for online and mobile viewers.

"KIT digital and Kamera have helped revitalize our Internet TV offering by allowing us to integrate the most compelling video content from leading sporting events around the world," said Lucinda Tam, Head of News, Money and Sports at Tiscali. "Of the 3.5 million users in Italy and the UK that routinely visit our websites, a large majority are interested in getting access to premier sports programming. Euro2008 is one of the world's most watched sporting events, and it was extremely important to us to provide video coverage of the tournament to our users. Through KIT's proprietary broadband and mobile technology, we are not only able to showcase the event, we are able to deliver custom, localized feeds for our viewers in different geographies."

Elizabeth Eastham, Sales Manager of SNTV, commented, "With KIT packaging our sports programming into a broad, end-to-end IPTV offering, we are reaching a much wider audience and delivering our content in ways that go above and beyond the traditional video stream. The ability to translate our content into multiple languages makes it more meaningful for viewers around the world, and this real-time localization capability is a key advantage to working with KIT digital."

For the Beijing Olympics in August, KIT digital will work with SNTV to generate coverage of the games for a broad base of global media companies. SNTV is already producing pre-Olympic content from Beijing, and will draw on material from ten crews based in Beijing during the Games.

Kaleil Isaza Tuzman, chairman & CEO of KIT digital, commented, "When we acquired Kamera, not only did we gain a leading mobile video provider, we greatly expanded our content relationships. We are pleased to be able to work with some of the world's largest media and telecommunications companies to distribute real-time Euro2008 and Beijing Olympics coverage to browsers and mobile devices in a manner which is tailored to their audiences' local language and content needs."

Sonus Networks Ranked Global Leader for IP-Voice InfrastructureIndustry Analysts Confirm Market Leader Grew Ahead of Competition In the First Quarter of 2008

WESTFORD, Mass., June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sonus Networks , a market leader in IP communications infrastructure, today announced that it led the global media gateway market in Q1 2008 according to figures from Synergy Research Group, a leading independent industry analyst firm, and Infonetics, an international market research and consulting firm specializing in data networking and telecom. Following its strong leadership position during 2007, according to the recent analysts' reports, Sonus holds the number one position for the global market in VoIP media gateways, high density VoIP media gateways and total media gateways overall.

In the quarterly report entitled "Service Provider VoIP and IMS Equipment Providers - Q1 2008," Infonetics named Sonus Networks as the market leader in the global high density media gateway sector, and the global media gateway sector overall.

"As Sonus enters its second decade in the IP-voice market, this industry leader continues to expand its market position and leadership," commented Stephane Teral, principal analyst, service provider next generation voice and mobile core with Infonetics Research. "The carrier IP-voice equipment market remains healthy, driven by the long term migration of carriers to packet telephony. The media gateway sector in particular experienced year over year growth, due to the migration by an increased number of large operators to an IP foundation for their voice communications. Sonus is leading this evolution with innovative solutions that are designed for the most demanding networks."

Confirming that Sonus continues to lead the market into 2008, the Synergy Research Group also named Sonus as the Q1 2008 global leader in the total VoIP media gateway sector and the global high density VoIP media gateway sector with 29% market share, in their quarterly update "Q1 2008 Service Provider VoIP/IMS Market Shares".

"The last decade has seen tremendous change with the disruption of IP Voice in both Enterprise and Service Provider Networks. With this change we have seen a lot of VoIP companies come and go," says Jeremy Duke, President & CEO, Synergy Research Group, "but Sonus remains the standout vendor that has delivered on its promises and has ascended as a tier 1 market leader, which continues to speak to their market leadership today."

"Over the last ten years, we are proud that Sonus has led the migration to IP-voice by major tier 1 operators. With only 20% of the voice traffic running on IP platforms, the opportunity remains robust for Sonus to expand its leadership and continue to transform the world's communications," said Hassan Ahmed, chairman at Sonus Networks. "It is testimony to Sonus' ability to meet customer needs and thus retain our leadership position."

Emdeon Business Services Processes One Billionth Pharmacy Claim for Department of Defense and the U.S. Military Health SystemCustom-Built Applications Process 16 Million Claims Monthly for 9 Million Beneficiaries

NASHVILLE, Tenn., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Emdeon Business Services, a leading provider of revenue cycle management and clinical communication solutions, announced today that the company has processed its one billionth pharmacy claim for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) through the Pharmacy Data Transaction Service (PDTS). Emdeon has been providing services to the DoD as a subcontractor to CSC , the DoD's primary contractor, since 1999.

PDTS, created by Emdeon exclusively for the DoD, is a centralized data repository of drug claims information that has substantially benefited the Military Health System's pharmacy services. PDTS is scalable, robust and secure and is an example of Emdeon's ability to develop solutions for major healthcare organizations. Emdeon's milestone of one billion processed claims comes after nearly a decade of providing quality service and expertise to the DoD. PDTS has achieved Defense Information Technology Security Certification and Accreditation (DITSCAP), and has been awarded the Air Force Certificate of Networthiness.

"One billion claims processed is proof that Emdeon's PDTS is one of the Department of Defense's most successful custom-built systems," said Raymond E. Henry, president of CSC's North American Public Sector Government Health Services division. "This service has now proven itself many times over to be a vital tool for the Military Health System -- allowing the DoD to minimize cost, prevent fraud and monitor patient usage and provider prescribing patterns."

The innovation and quality offered by PDTS are best demonstrated by the two major recognitions it has achieved. PDTS was one of only seven finalists in the 2002 President's Quality Award Program for which 100 federal government programs competed. It was also selected by Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government as a semifinalist for the prestigious 2002 Innovations in American Government Award.

PDTS processes an average of 15.4 million pharmacy transactions monthly for the 9.3 million beneficiaries of TRICARE, the U.S. military health plan. With real-time, electronic functionality, PDTS conducts prospective drug utilization reviews on new and refill prescriptions -- to help ensure patient safety and proper usage. Additionally, PDTS provides online verification of eligibility, drug coverage, quantity limits, co-pay levels, deductible/maximum benefit balances as well as facilitates pharmacy reimbursement.

To date, the PDTS System has proactively identified over 268,700 Level 1 drug-drug interactions, thereby enhancing patient safety and providing industry leading pharmaceutical care for the TRICARE beneficiaries. Rear Admiral Thomas McGinnis, Chief, TRICARE Management Activity, Pharmaceutical Operations Directorate, stated: "It is comforting to know that, whether our beneficiaries choose to receive their medications from a military facility, mail-order or civilian retail pharmacy, we have provided an accurate medication history to keep them safe."

"One billion claims processed for the DoD provides testimony of Emdeon's ability to create healthcare technology solutions that help our clients provide higher quality medical care at a reduced cost," states Emdeon Senior Vice President, John Long. "We have also developed technology to support coordination of benefits, Medicare Part D and NPI and we will continue to enhance our systems to support the goals of the DoD."

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Novell Meets U.S. Department of Defense Internet Protocol StandardsNovell is the First Linux Vendor to Appear on Department of Defense Approved Products List

WALTHAM, Mass., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Novell(R) announced today it is the first Linux* vendor to appear on the U.S. Department of Defense Unified Capabilities Approved Products List (APL), as SUSE(R) Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 2 (SP2) has received the Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) Special Interoperability Certification from the department's Defense Information System Agency. With this certification, Novell customers, including government agencies, can rely on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to support present and future networking standards, offering peace of mind for long-term use.

The APL list is expected to become a Department of Defense and U.S. federal government equipment purchase requirement. In addition to making Novell the first Linux vendor to appear on the list, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is also the only general-purpose operating system with IPsec IKEv2 (Internet Key Exchange v2) support to date. The product was granted IPv6 certification just four days after the release of SP2.

"SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is the Linux operating system that government agencies can rely on to meet their mission-critical performance demands while satisfying stringent federal mandates," said Carlos Montero- Luque, vice president of Product Management for Open Platform Solutions at Novell. "Federal mandates for updated IT infrastructure can often signal expensive upgrades for government agencies, contractors and other organizations. With this latest certification, federal agencies and others can leverage the enterprise-class power and unmatched interoperability that SUSE Linux Enterprise Server offers, without a costly upgrade."

On behalf of the U.S. federal government, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a policy mandating all federal government agencies upgrade their network infrastructures to IPv6 and interface each agency network with this infrastructure by June 2008. IPv6 is a network layer for packet-switched networks that will succeed IPv4 for general Internet use. IPv6 delivers a much larger address space that provides improved flexibility in assigning addresses and removes the need to use network address translation to avert the exhaustion of IP addresses.

The next-generation platform for the open enterprise, SUSE Linux Enterprise is the best-engineered and most interoperable platform for mission- critical computing, from the desktop to the data center. TiVo Announces Results of Its Stop||Watch(TM) Commercial, Program Rankings For April 2008- Highest viewed commercial spot airs in program that didn't make Top 10 -- Film trailers dominate Live and Timeshifted commercial viewing -

ALVISO, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- TiVo Inc. , the creator of and a leader in advertising solutions and television services for digital video recorders (DVRs), today unveiled the Top Commercial Rankings for April 2008, as viewed by TiVo subscribers.

Top programs in total viewership were dominated by American Idol (five of Top 10) and Desperate Housewives (three of Top 10). Five of the Top 10 commercials ran during American Idol, and one during Desperate Housewives. The highest rated spot, both in Total and Timeshifted viewing, was for the film "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", which aired during an episode of NBC's The Office, a show which didn't even make the Top 10 Program list (this ad campaign was the least fast-forwarded campaign on broadcast primetime). Interestingly, ads for new movies comprised five of the Top 10 Commercials that aired during the month for total viewing, and seven of the Top 10 spots based on timeshifted viewing, where viewers have the ability to fast-forward and thus complete control over which ads they choose to watch, and two of the top ten least fast-forwarded campaigns (including the number one position).

"Once again, the lack of correlation between ads viewers choose to watch, compared to the top rated programs, is astonishing," said Todd Juenger, Vice President & General Manager, TiVo Audience Research & Measurement. "The commercial with the highest viewership appeared in a program that didn't even crack the Top 10. The highest rated program, Grey's Anatomy airing on April 24, had 33 paid commercial spots in it, but only two of them (both for motion pictures) made the Top 10 commercials. Where are the other 31? Viewers are exercising control over which ads they choose to watch. As DVRs continue to proliferate, understanding which advertisements hold audiences in which programming environments -- especially during timeshifted viewing -- is crucial."

The Stop||Watch(TM) ratings service, introduced in February 2007, is offered via an easily sortable database of ratings for nationally run programs and advertisements from cable and broadcast networks, with data going back to September 2006. The service now tracks ratings for 51 nationally distributed, ad supported networks (up from 15), and covers all programming and commercials aired from 5:00am - 11:30pm (up from Daytime and Primetime only), providing subscribers with an even greater sample of audience behavioral data.

Subscribers to TiVo's Stop||Watch(TM) service include: Omnicom Media Group, NBC Universal, CBS Corporation, The Interpublic Group, Starcom, Carat USA, MPMA, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Media IQ and Euro RSCG New York.

TiVo Stop||Watch(TM) ratings service data is derived from a daily, aggregate, anonymous, stratified random sample of 20,000 TiVo units -- from which the second-by-second "clickstream" of behavior and viewership is collected and assessed. The Stop||Watch service includes data for: Total Viewing, Live Viewing, Timeshifted Viewing (less than 1 hour, 1-6 hours, 6-24 hours, 24-48 hours, 48-72 hours, 2-7 day, and 7-14 day delay and C3), Program Ratings, Commercial Ratings and a Commercial Viewership Index. JDSU Unveils Wireless Backhaul Test and Monitoring Solution at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2008Only Integrated System for Migration from TDM to Ethernet to Help Satisfy Service Level Agreements, Increase Operational Efficiency

MILPITAS, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- JDSU today launched a comprehensive assurance solution enabling network operators to manage reliable performance wireless backhaul issues and ensuring the Ethernet technology closely associated with the success of next generation backhaul performs reliably. The all-in-one NetComplete system helps operators migrate from today's Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) switched circuit environment to Ethernet/IP technology, and to meet the stringent service performance requirements to which backhaul providers must adhere.

Wireless backhaul, or the high-speed point-to-point connectivity between base-station controllers (BSC) and an aggregation point or hub, has become a priority issue from both a cost and service performance perspective for wireless carriers. Ensuring high-quality service standards are met during the transition from TDM to Ethernet, as well as decreasing backhaul costs, are among service providers' top concerns.

The solution -- made up of NetComplete, which includes OSS software, the QT-600 Ethernet probe, and CENTEST 650, as well as other leading JDSU Ethernet test portables such as the HST-3000 triple-play services handheld tester -- gives operators full reach into the network. It also provides end-to-end service turn-up and performance monitoring that is standards-compliant and helps eliminate potential issues related to network element interoperability and upgrade. JDSU will exhibit its wireless backhaul and business class Ethernet test solutions at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Philadelphia, June 24-27, booth # 543.

"The JDSU wireless backhaul test solution lets operators seamlessly keep pace with next generation backhaul systems and successfully manage the transition from TDM to Ethernet, leveraging our leading Ethernet test capabilities and service assurance systems that provide full monitoring and troubleshooting," said Jerry Gentile, vice president in JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "Operators need end-to-end visibility in the network to quickly identify problems, decrease mean-time-to-repair and avoid SLA penalties."

According to a recent study published by Infonetics Research, mobile operators and backhaul transport providers are expected to spend $8.2 billion on mobile first-mile backhaul equipment in 2010. The study cites continued growth of mobile subscribers, competitive pressures for better quality and new services, as well as the on-going proliferation of bandwidth needs as key factors.

This solution allows JDSU to work cooperatively with many technical partners and their solutions, including interoperability with Accedian's EtherNID(TM) and MetroNID(TM) for demarc packet assurance and advanced performance testing.

JDSU is also making publicly available its new white paper, "Next Generation Cellular Backhaul: A Review of Today's Most Critical Real-World Issues and the Methodologies Used to Combat Them," authored by Andrew Sachs, JDSU director of solutions strategy for wireless backhaul, who will be presenting the paper at the SCTE Expo on June 26 and 27. Sachs is also participating in a mobile backhaul panel at NXTcomm08, Las Vegas, on June 18 (JDSU is exhibiting at booth #SL1316).

NEW YORK, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon is ramping up efforts to extend the reach of its FiOS service to small- and medium-sized commercial properties such as strip malls, and street-level shops and offices.

The service expansion and marketing campaign targeted to these properties, known as multiple-tenant units (MTUs), is being conducted by Verizon Enhanced Communities, Verizon's business organization that markets communications services to single- and multiple-dwelling unit properties (MDUs). The effort is an outgrowth of Verizon's program to link apartment buildings and other multidwelling units to offer FiOS services to tenants.

"Verizon is excited to bring FiOS service to small- and medium-sized businesses in commercial properties," said Monte Beck, vice president of business marketing for Verizon. "Now as our teams of engineers are expanding the reach of our FiOS services, we'll sell the services to commercial properties, just as we've done successfully in apartment buildings."

Last fall, sales managers from Verizon Enhanced Communities began contacting owners of small- and medium-sized commercial properties in California, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Since then, Verizon has been proceeding to bring Verizon FiOS Internet for Business to MTU properties in parts of 16 states where the company is constructing this service expansion.

Customer interest in bringing FiOS to multiple-tenant commercial properties reflects the competitive advantage Verizon's fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network offers developers in marketing their properties. Verizon has an aggressive plan to bring FiOS services to even more MDUs and MTUs by the end of this year.

"Verizon's all-fiber-optic network, which provides unprecedented bandwidth and the ability to deliver super-high-speed Internet connections and crystal-clear voice and video signals, practically sells itself," said Eric Cevis, vice president of Verizon Enhanced Communities. "Property owners of apartment or commercial buildings want to attract tenants -- residents and businesses -- with a network designed to be "future-proof" that can support today's applications as well as foreseeable applications to come."

Verizon FiOS Internet for Business service can deliver Internet access with maximum downstream connection speed of up to 50 Mbps (megabits per second) on the company's most advanced digital, all-fiber-optic network. At 50 Mbps, downloading a 1.2 GB (gigabyte), or 90-minute, standard-definition movie takes approximately 3.2 minutes. Upload speeds of up to 20 Mbps make it a snap to share purchased videos and files over Verizon's large-scale fiber-optic network that extends all the way to customers' homes and small- and medium- sized businesses. Using a 20 Mbps upstream broadband connection, uploading a 250 megabyte (MB) file, or a 3,500 page document, takes about 90 seconds, compared with about 47 minutes over a 768 kilobits per second (kbps) upstream connection.

In some areas Verizon FiOS Internet for Business service delivers Internet access with maximum downstream connection speeds of up to 30 Mbps and maximum upload speeds of up to 5 Mbps or 15 Mbps. Verizon FiOS Internet for Business offers a number of broadband speeds to meet the needs of each small- and medium-sized business.

Verizon Enhanced Communities received the Cornerstone Award from Broadband Properties Magazine acknowledging the organization for outfitting a 300-unit, eight-building residential community with Verizon's FiOS all-fiber-optic network services in just 14 days. FTI Consulting to Sponsor Live Webinar and Unveil Findings From New Survey by Industry Leaders on Litigation Readiness- Research Shows Outdated Methods for Electronic Discovery Preparation Leads to Disconnect Between Legal and Compliance Teams -

NEW YORK, June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- FTI Consulting, Inc. , the global business advisory firm dedicated to helping organizations protect and enhance their enterprise value, today announced a free Webinar, "Are You Really Ready For eDiscovery?" designed to highlight the results of a recent eDiscovery readiness survey conducted by industry analyst firm IDC. An urgent need for organizations to adopt standardized policies and IT practices for activities related to the identification, preservation, and collection of potentially responsive data is just one of the key findings stemming from the research. During this event, guest speakers Vivian Tero, research manager for Compliance Infrastructure, IDC, Laurie Weiss, partner, Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. will join Adam Bendell, senior managing director, FTI Consulting, Inc. for a candid conversation regarding perceptions versus reality with regards to litigation readiness and best practices for proactively putting in place standardized IT policies for managing discoverable data.

"What's striking about these findings is the major disconnect we are seeing with regards to how legal, compliance and IT departments are communicating throughout the eDiscovery process," said Adam Bendell, of FTI. "In order to fully prepare and comply with the amended Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) it is imperative that organizations formally adopt standardized policies and coordinated legal and IT practices for activities related to the identification, preservation, and collection of potentially responsive data."

Hear the survey findings and recommendations from legal and IT experts relating to:

-- The current state of litigation response and readiness initiatives among U.S. businesses based on the Fullbright & Jaworski annual Litigation Trends Survey. -- Expected conduct and responsibilities of IT professionals under the FRCP. -- Technology investment priorities for litigation response and readiness.

"The absence of formalized best practices in support of the legal discovery process underscores an urgent need to further educate IT organizations and their legal and compliance counterparts about each others' actions and activities during a litigation event," said Vivian Tero, Program Manager, Compliance Infrastructure, IDC. "The shortened timelines under the amended eDiscovery Rules highlight the importance of having a core response team that facilitates the automation of the discovery activities. Additionally, having a streamlined communication strategy in place enhances an organization's ability to better predict the costs of a litigation event and improves its response strategy."

Full details about the event can be found below:

Who: Guest speakers Vivian Tero, research manager for Compliance Infrastructure, IDC; Laurie Weiss, partner Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P and Adam Bendell, senior managing director, FTI Consulting, Inc.

HughesNet Powers Automotive Broadcasting Network at Automobile Dealerships NationwideAuto dealerships across US will be able to receive customized content to increase sales, improve customer loyalty, and improve customer satisfaction

GERMANTOWN, Md., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the global leader in broadband satellite network solutions and services, announced today that the Automotive Broadcasting Network(TM) (ABN), a private auto retailing television network, has selected the HughesNet(R) Managed Digital Media Service to distribute video content to automotive dealerships across the US.

The Automotive Broadcasting Network is a subscription-based service providing high-quality, family-friendly entertainment programming from CBS not normally available during business hours, as well as clips and segments from CBS news and talk programs, to each dealer site. Dealers who subscribe to the service also can develop and control their own local advertising content to be shown throughout their facilities. This translates into new opportunities to enhance customer loyalty, improve customer satisfaction scores, and boost sales by reaching customers while they wait for their cars to be serviced.

"When looking for a service provider, we chose Hughes because of its rich heritage as a turnkey provider of cost-effective broadband satellite services to geographically dispersed locations. Satellite is an ideal transport technology to distribute digital media to the point of impact-enabling ABN to provide a service that will increase sales, strengthen brand recognition, and improve the customer experience at the dealer level," said ABN founder and CEO Jerry Daniels.

HughesNet Managed Digital Media Services includes project design and consulting, broadband transport for content distribution, best-of-breed hardware and software network components, installation, maintenance and customer support, leaving enterprises free to focus on marketing and sales.

According to Mike Cook, Hughes senior vice president, "Through HughesNet Managed Digital Media Services, ABN is able to give automobile dealers a cost-effective way to spend their advertising dollars, improve customer loyalty, and more importantly, reach their customers at the point of impact."

According to ABN, research has shown that 30 percent of consumers make unplanned purchases as a result of in-store television. At a dealership, customers who choose to wait for their vehicles while they are being serviced spend an average of one hour, 32 minutes at the dealership. With ABN network programming, dealers can relay up to 30 targeted messages an hour to those captive customers.

Also central to ABN's offering is a series of automotive-specific "shorts" such as tech tips and walk-arounds, which are produced by ABN and designed to inform and educate customers about dealer-specific products and services, and ultimately increase sales. These spots, together with promotional spots provided by the dealer, replace typical commercials seen on broadcast or cable TV.

Lockheed Martin's Littoral Combat Ship Combat Management System Readies for Sea

MOORESTOWN, N.J., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin has successfully integrated key shipboard combat system components aboard the U.S. Navy's first Littoral Combat Ship, PCU Freedom, with COMBATSS-21, the ship's core combat management system.

Key components integrated with COMBATSS-21 include the radar, gun weapon system, missile launcher, decoy launcher, and electronic warfare system. The successful integration and testing validated Lockheed Martin's open architecture approach with both COMBATSS-21 and Freedom itself. During the integration testing, targets of opportunity were engaged and tracked to demonstrate operability.

In a separate but parallel milestone, Lockheed Martin established the Mission Package Computing Environment infrastructure and commenced integration activities on board Freedom with the ship's consoles and equipment cabinets.

"COMBATSS-21 is fully installed aboard Freedom and fully operational," said Rich Calabrese, Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems & Sensors' director for Mission Systems. "The successes with COMBATSS-21 exemplify the Navy's desire for combat system commonality and improved interoperability across the surface fleet, and it represents a major milestone for the mission package concept on Freedom."

In March, Lockheed Martin completed endurance testing with COMBATSS-21 and the Mission Package Command and Control system at its land-based integration center in Moorestown, NJ. The endurance test was the latest of a series of tests and demonstrations leading up to the final software load onboard Freedom:

-- In August 2007, Lockheed Martin successfully integrated the Navy-provided Littoral Combat Ship Mine Warfare mission module software with COMBATSS-21; -- In January 2008, Lockheed Martin successfully integrated the Navy-provided Mission Package Computing Environment software with shipboard equipment enclosures.

Freedom's COMBATSS-21 is a total ship combat management system, designed to deliver capability rapidly and affordably. Originally built through a high degree of reuse from the Aegis Weapon System, COMBATSS-21 is now part of a common product library that delivers to Aegis, LCS, the U.S. Coast Guard's Deepwater program and international navies.

Headquartered in Bethesda, MD, Lockheed Martin employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation reported 2007 sales of $41.9 billion.

CCID Consulting: IBM vs. HP, Asymmetrical Competitors

Software and Service Industry Research Center

BEIJING, June 16 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (HKSE: 8235), recently released its article on IBM and HP.

The income of IBM in 2006 fiscal year reached $91.6 billion; lower than that of HP, $91.6 billion. And in 2007 fiscal year, the income of HP reached $104.3 billion, up 5.6% over IBM, which was $98.8 billion. It seems that HP has exceeded IBM and the advantage to IBM is increasing.

However, this is just the first glimpse. Essentially, HP and IBM are two asymmetrical IT companies. Looking at the income structure of HP and IBM, and it is apparent that HP and IBM have different core business.

Figure 1 Income Structure of IBM and HP http://www.ccidconsulting.com/upload/13247.jpg Source: 2007 Fiscal Yearly Reports of IBM & HP

The income from hardware accounts for 25% of IBM, while that of HP is more than 80%. HP's hardware sales revenue is more than three times that of IBM. On the other hand, IBM's service sales revenue is more than three times that of HP, and software sales revenue nearly nine times that of HP.

IBM 2007 fiscal yearly report shows that IBM's income has five main parts, which are GTS, GBS, S&T, Software, and GF. Income from GTS and GBS takes a share of more than a half, which shows the importance of service in IBM. All IBM businesses have turned from individuals to organizations.

Figure 2 Income Structure of IBM in 2007 http://www.ccidconsulting.com/upload/13248.jpg Source: 2007 Fiscal Yearly Reports of IBM

On the other hand, HP's income has six main parts, which are ESS, HPS, Software, PSG, IPG, and HPFS. Income from PSG and IPG reaches more than 60%, which provide computers and image equipment for individuals and organizations. Business modes of these two departments are quite different with the other four departments due to different markets and products.

Figure 3 Income Structure of HP, 2007 http://www.ccidconsulting.com/upload/13249.jpg Source: 2007 Fiscal Yearly Reports of HP

When talking about competition between HP and IBM, that specifies the competition of TSG, which includes ESS, HPS, and Software, to IBM.

Table 1 Income of Competitive Business Departments of IBM & HP in 2007 IBM Income HP Income ($100 Million) ($100 Million) Service GS 541.44 HPS 166.46 Software Software 199.82 Software 23.25 Hardware S&T 213.17 ESS 187.69 Total -- 954.43 TSG 377.40 Source: 2007 Fiscal Yearly Reports of IBM & HP

This difference lies in the different strategic positioning of IBM and HP. IBM and HP chose different roads after their significant M&As. IBM positions itself as an information infrastructure architecture technology provider, while HP acts as an information infrastructure provider and provides corresponding service.

In detail, IBM completely turned to service after the acquisition to PWC's consulting services, selling architecture solutions to users through services and middleware. On the other hand, after the acquisition of Compaq, HP paid more attention to IT infrastructure providing the corresponding management services. IBM gained more added values by elongating their value chain, while HP succeeded in scale expansion by keeping costs lower through a simpler mode. These two modes rely on different market conditions. The former mode needs finer specialization divisions with lower market transaction costs, while the latter one is just contrary.

Generally speaking, the asymmetrical business structures of IBM and HP lie in different development routes. However, whether the asymmetry will emphasize their differences or chase after the same goal is still to be verified in the market.
