Tellabs Enables Deltacom Network OptimizationDeltacom offers new services while efficiently preserving existing infrastructure
LAS VEGAS, June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NXTcomm08 -- The efficiency of interworking hit a sweet spot with Deltacom a year ago. The US-based telecom company serves enterprises, small businesses and wholesalers in the southeastern United States. Interworking enables Deltacom to continue providing the IP-based services that enable its customers' advanced applications, while optimizing past investment in traditional networking elements.
Deltacom visited Tellabs at NXTcomm07 with an interest in Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol, or MLPPP. Now, a year later, the company is leveraging MLPPP success to the fullest with a deployed Tellabs solution. MLPPP is for service providers who aim to offer IP-based services over traditional networks. It enables providers to connect traditional architectures and leverage IP-based transport to optimize networking efficiency.
Sweet success with MLPPP
With MLPPP on the Tellabs(R) 8800 Multiservice Router (MSR) Series, Deltacom can maximize its current network's capabilities while growing its next-generation architecture. With Tellabs, Deltacom can:
-- make the network easier to manage by consolidating many network
elements into one platform;
-- offer advanced services to customers by leveraging IP-based services
over existing infrastructure and Ethernet; and
-- deliver a greater variety of bandwidth offerings to smaller business
customers.
Depending on market need, Deltacom will deploy a variety of products from the Tellabs 8800 MSR series. The company will use the Tellabs(R) 8860 Multiservice Router in larger cities and the Tellabs(R) 8830 Multiservice Router in smaller markets. Deltacom will also use the Tellabs(R) 8890 Management System to streamline management and maintenance of its new architecture.
"Before we had three network elements in our central office doing the work that now we can do with one," said Eric Douglas, vice president of engineering at Deltacom. "The solution enables us to provide emerging Ethernet and IP-based services to our customers while optimizing our current infrastructure."
The icing on the cake
Choosing new equipment is only one piece of the success. Deltacom knew that future-proofing its network required foresight. Tellabs(R) Global Services helped with installation, testing, maintenance, and an on-site Tellabs engineer helped Deltacom address compliance requirements using the Tellabs equipment.
"Deltacom plans to use extensive functionality in the Tellabs 8800 MSR series, so its engineers must know the ins and outs of the new equipment," said Dan Kelly, executive vice president for global products for Tellabs. "With support from Tellabs Global Services, Deltacom can deploy new equipment quickly and effectively to bring advanced services to its customers."

NEW YORK, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- 4th Story Media and HarperCollins Publishers today announced their partnership in The Amanda Project, the first multi-platform series to be written in part by its audience, girls ages 12-14. 4th Story Media, which owns all rights for the property, will produce the content for The Amanda Project with a creative team including web design agency Happy Cog, young adult authors, artists and graphic designers. HarperCollins Publishers, which is a strategic partner in the venture and an investor, has acquired the rights to publish an eight-book The Amanda Project series worldwide.
"It feels like the art and craft of publishing great stories for children is on the brink of revolutionary change," said Lisa Holton, founder and CEO, 4th Story Media. "We are exploring new ways of using the web to tell stories, while also leading kids back to the joys of reading. Amanda Valentino is the elusive, charismatic, and alluring new girl at Evansville Township High School who arrives mid-year, leaves abruptly, and indelibly changes the lives of everyone around her in the process. Her story will be told across a variety of media in addition to the books -- a social website where readers can interact with and become characters in the mystery, a related series of blogs chronicling the story as it unfolds, clues and seed posts on satellite sites, downloadable music and official and user-generated merchandise. Amanda's fate will begin to unfold across the web during the fall of 2008, through the launch of the T.A.P. website in early 2009, and continue into the publication of the first book in Fall 2009.
The Amanda Project includes:
Book Series: The eight-book series is a mix of stories and theories created by the authors and supplemented by the best of the readers'/writers' theories.
T.A.P. Website: The website is an interactive forum and gallery for all things Amanda. Readers are invited to log in as themselves, or take on the identity of any number of the fictional characters (classmates, teachers, principals, and neighbors) that inhabit Amanda's world. The T.A.P. community will post testimonials, investigate theories, analyze facts, events, clues and artifacts, collect evidence and testimony, and muse on who Amanda was and is.
Games, Uploads, Community: Readers can create their own T.A.P. page and clue closet, discover alliances, customize their avatar, dress the chameleon-like Amanda, upload drawings and character portraits, enter a video clue contest, and join a moderated forum.
Online and Retail Merchandise: Fans can create customized Amanda Valentino gear -- t-shirts, buttons, charms, notebooks, stationery, e-cards -- to show their alliances and suspicions, and character identities.

Philips Web Site Offers Seniors and Caregivers Tips and Techniques for Preventing Fallswww.LearnNotToFall.com includes instructional video on how to get up from a fall safely
ANDOVER, Mass., June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Royal Philips Electronics today announced the launch of the website http://www.learnnottofall.com/ in response to the alarming rise in falls among seniors. Launched by Philips Lifeline, makers of the popular personal emergency response system, the site features four sections, or building blocks, to help prevent falls. These include examining existing medical conditions, reviewing medications for possible interactions, improving strength and balance, and making the home a safe haven.
More than one-third of American seniors fall each year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, making falls the leading cause of injuries among those 65 and older. In fact, falls account for 25 percent of all hospital stays and 40 percent of all nursing home admissions. It is also widely believed that the speed of intervention -- reducing the amount of time that a senior might spend helpless on the floor -- is a key to more successful outcomes and a return to independent living.
"Preventing falls is the key, so making a home safer for anyone at risk for falling is the best place to start," notes Marc Braunstein with the Falls Program at Philips Lifeline.
According to experts, several factors contribute to a risk of falls. Therefore, it is important for seniors and their families to consider each of the following areas as part of their personal falls reduction plan:
-- Conduct a thorough review of the home for safety. Is there enough light to move about safely at night? Are there grab bars located near the toilet and tub or shower?
-- Speak with a pharmacist to get a 'medication checkup.' This will help determine what medications might interact and increase the risk of a fall.
-- Ask a doctor, physical or occupational therapist if it's time to start a safe exercise and balance program. Tai chi classes, for example, have proven to be an effective and enjoyable way to help prevent falls.
Dorothy Baker, RN PhD, a specialist in fall prevention at Yale University explains, "As we age, it becomes more difficult to get up from a fall even if there is no injury. Knowing a few simple techniques on the safe way to get up from the floor can be invaluable for seniors to learn."
Key to getting up from a fall is to take time to relax, gather your bearings and, should help not be readily available, prepare to try and raise yourself slowly and carefully, ideally onto a sturdy piece of furniture or bottom stair that is near.
Complete instructions, as well as a video showing Dr. Baker's exact technique, are located on the http://www.learnnottofall.com/ site.

Two Raytheon Facilities Receive Cogswell Award for Outstanding Security Practices
TEWKSBURY, Mass., and RESTON, Va., June 18, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Two Raytheon Company sites have been awarded the 2008 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award from the Defense Security Service (DSS).
Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems' Seapower Capability Center, Portsmouth, R.I., and Raytheon Technical Services Company's Sea Lite Beam Director (SLBD), White Sands Missile Range, N.M., were among 23 facilities named by DSS as this year's winners.
The Seapower Capability Center is IDS' primary naval business mission center dedicated to the development and delivery of critical seapower capabilities to the global joint battlespace. With a history of proven performance on several vital Navy programs, including the Zumwalt-class destroyer and Virginia-class submarines, the Seapower Capability System business area is a leading provider and integrator of submarine and surface ship combat management, anti-submarine, mine warfare, and integrated ship systems, as well as sensors and torpedoes for U.S. and allied fleets.
"It is an honor to be recognized for our demonstrated commitment to our customers and our outstanding security measures and best practices," said IDS President Dan Smith. "This prestigious award is a testament to Raytheon's dedication to maintaining world-class security standards -- critical to earning the trust of our customers and providing NoDoubt(TM) solutions to our warfighters."
Raytheon Technical Services Company's Sea Lite Beam Director (SLBD) program operates out of the U.S. Army's High Energy Laser Systems Test Facility at White Sands Missile Range. The SLBD program's primary scope is to assist the prime (Northrop Grumman IT) with placing Mid-Infrared Advance Chemical laser energy on U.S. Air Force wind tunnel mounted targets.
"We are very pleased to be recognized for our security efforts at White Sands Missile Range. The SLDB program is a prime example of Raytheon's focus on providing resources and technologies that offer world-class Mission Support to our customers," said RTSC President Rick Yuse.
To earn the Cogswell award, DSS criteria requires that a facility be nominated by its assigned Industrial Security Representative and have two consecutive superior industrial security review ratings. The facility must also display a sustained degree of excellence and innovation in its overall security program management, implementation and oversight.
Of the nearly 12,000 cleared contractors in the United States, less than one percent receives the award each year.
Raytheon Company, with 2007 sales of $21.3 billion, is a technology leader specializing in defense, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world. With a history of innovation spanning 86 years, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing; effects; and command, control, communications and intelligence systems, as well as a broad range of mission support.

Except for memory, virtually all the devices in the unit, including Analog (audio & video), Clocking, Power, MSP430, Logic and ESD protection come from TI.
"Thanks to DaVinci technology and TI's offerings in analog, logic and microcontroller solutions optimized for digital media, we were able to develop our HD40 videoclub in just 18 months with a small engineering team," explains Patrick Touzeau, CEZZER's CEO, previously R&D manager at Philips before he started his own company. "This is our first product, and we greatly value the extensive range of development tools and the expert support of TI's field application engineers. Further, various members of TI's Developer Network provided development aids and software libraries to help us to keep our program moving along quickly. In all, TI's technology and support have allowed us, as a newcomer, to take a leading position in the VoD market that will ensure the success of future products on our roadmap."
To utilize the device, the user simply plugs the unit into his/her home television and Internet box, and then turns on the unit. The user can either watch a movie already stored on an internal hard disk that is automatically updated, or make a selection of another movie from a large video catalogue. The user pays for the selected movie and if it is not already stored on disk, then the CEZZER videoclub downloads it immediately so that the user can view it in less than 24 hours time.
Due to the device's hard disk, CEZZER videoclub is nomadic. Once a program is ready to read, the user can just plug the videoclub into any television and watch it, without the need for an internet connection. In addition, a USB device allows the reception of free over-the-air TV programs transmitted using DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcast -- Terrestrial), and the videoclub supports both analog and digital video outputs.
"The CEZZER videoclub greatly benefits from the processing power and digital video capabilities offered by the DM644x digital media processor," said Jean-Marc Charpentier, Digital End-Equipment Business Development Manager, DSP Product Group EMEA, Texas Instruments. "Additionally, the scalable processors, software and application programming interfaces offered across DaVinci technology will enable CEZZER to more easily create a comprehensive product line of consumer devices."
"We are delighted to add the CEZZER videoclub to our customer offerings," says Pierre Brossard, CEO at TF1 VIDEO. "We can significantly expand our customer base because this capability will be extremely attractive to the 60 percent of Internet French subscribers who do not have high-speed Internet connections and cannot access to existing VoD on TV of tripleplay offers. Now HD VoD content is readily available to everybody. Most of all, CEZZER came with a ready to use solution which was easy and quick to interface with our catalogue. Further, the CEZZER VoD videoclub's ease of use is outstanding, which adds to the user experience."

NICE Systems selects Texas Instruments DaVinci(TM) technology for its next-generation IP video analytics surveillance systemLeading global security firm to use TI DSPs in edge devices for implementation of advanced analytics and addressing evolving standards
TEL AVIV, Israel, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) , today announced that NICE Systems has selected TI's TMS320DM6467 digital media processor based on DaVinci(TM) technology for its next-generation NiceVision Net edge devices as part of its complete end-to-end solution for IP video surveillance. The programmable DM6467 performs advanced encoding and compression, as well as video streaming and analytics to a central location.
There is a growing global trend of network-based IP video using the highest quality video available replacing analog infrastructure and digital video recorders. To support these distributed architectures, NICE is utilizing the latest DaVinci device, the DM6467, a digital signal processor (DSP)-based SoC that is tuned for real time, multi-format high-definition video transcoding. The DM6467 integrates both an ARM(TM) and a DSP core, along with a High-Definition Video and Imaging Co-Processor (HDVICP), as well as PCI bus and Ethernet among its connectivity peripherals. The programmability and flexibility offered by the processor allows for customers to meet changing standards in video codecs, provide software updates and new features to field-deployed units.
The combination of features in the DM6467 allows the development of intelligent edge devices with a broader scope of functionality including high-quality video, more sophisticated compression algorithms for streaming video on the internet, as well as analytics.
"The rapid proliferation of IP video surveillance is promoting the use of distributed surveillance architecture with intelligence migrated towards the edge of the network, now allowing our customers an even more cost-effective solution," notes Igal Dvir, CTO for NiceVision, NICE Systems Ltd. "Intelligent edge devices, such as in the NiceVision Net portfolio support advanced compression and streaming capabilities, as well as video analytics on board. TI's leadership in the video surveillance market and its clear roadmap were among the main reasons for taking the decision to further enhance our relationship and implement our intelligent edge devices using this technology."
"TI values the long term relationship with NICE Systems and is committed to help NICE to innovate in highly competitive security markets with TI's analog and embedded processing products," says Jean-Marc Charpentier, Digital End-Equipment Business Development Manager for DSP Products.
NICE security customers utilizing NICE's advanced video surveillance solutions include among others, worldwide mass transit authorities, including New Jersey Transit, Belgian railways network, the China Ministry of Rail and the Beijing Metro; the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and the Shanghai Pudong Airport; as well as public-sector customers, such as the European Space Agency, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty in New York and many others.

Motorola Multi-Net Mobility(TM) Adds Mobile 'Hot Spots,' Remote Configuration to Virtual Private NetworkEnhanced Multi-Net Mobility Solution Delivers Secure, Interoperable, Mobile Broadband to Users on the Move
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. today announced that its Multi-Net Mobility(TM) solution can now be configured and managed remotely over a wireless data network and now allows wireless devices to access a virtual private network and back-office applications from "hot spots" outside a vehicle.
Motorola Multi-Net Mobility, based on the standard Mobile IP protocol, provides end-to-end data encryption for text, image and video applications while operating across a variety of public and private networks, including Motorola's MOTOMESH(TM), ASTRO(R) 25 Integrated Voice and Data, ASTRO 25 High Performance Data (HPD) networks, or other wireless networks.
Multi-Net Mobility is a Mobile Virtual Private Network (Mobile VPN) solution that maintains secure connectivity while users roam between wireless networks and optimizes network performance. It supports secure, interoperable, mobile data connections to meet the needs of users on the move. Multi-Net Mobility is part of Motorola's MOTOA4(TM) solutions and services portfolio for mission-critical communications.
It was developed to address mobile connectivity and interoperability needs across a variety of customer environments, including public safety and government agencies, public and private utilities, and manufacturing operations. The solution provides optimum performance and flexibility for the demands of field users who often require mobile access to back-office databases, rapid information sharing and multi-media functionality, including video surveillance.
With the addition of the remote configuration solution, Multi-Net Mobility now allows users to perform configuration updates remotely over the wireless data network to keep field personnel operating in the field instead of coming in for configuration updates.
Multi-Net Mobility also offers a Wireless Vehicular Area Network, which creates a "hot spot" of coverage to allow users of portable wireless devices around a vehicle to connect to the Wide Area Network.
"The addition of these features provides users of Multi-Net Mobility with greater flexibility, ease of use and enhanced mobility through broadband solutions," said Girish Rishi, Motorola vice president and general manager, Applications & Data Solutions. "With remote configuration management and "hot spot" coverage, Multi-Net Mobility helps users improve productivity, optimize performance, and share information in real time."
With Multi-Net Mobility, roaming between wireless data networks is continuous and transparent to the user, allowing application sessions to remain open through network interruptions or roaming transitions, and maintaining productivity without sacrificing security. When coverage gaps occur, Multi-Net Mobility will keep applications running and then reconnect them seamlessly, automatically and securely.
"The end-to-end security of Multi-Net Mobility is a key benefit to users," said Rishi. "The mobile virtual private network allows applications such as video monitoring, location tracking, fingerprint identification and database lookup to stay seamlessly connected while roaming securely across multiple wireless networks."
Multi-Net Mobility meets U.S. government and public safety requirements with always-on authentication and encryption, regardless of the network used. That means users can be certain that their data transmissions are secure and protected.

AT&T BusinessDirect Leads the Pack in Analyst Firm's Review of Customer PortalsAT&T Is the Only Carrier to Receive the Highest Measurement in All Areas Evaluated
SAN ANTONIO, June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. has announced that for the fourth consecutive year, AT&T BusinessDirect(R) topped the list of telecom carrier customer Web portals in an annual benchmark study conducted by Yankee Group. In a review of portal offerings involving several carriers, AT&T BusinessDirect was the only portal to receive Yankee Group's highest rating across the categories it evaluated.
Yankee Group based its study on head-to-head demonstrations and interviews with the carriers, measuring key features and functionality areas such as order management, billing and payment, maintenance, network and performance, and e-bonding.
"AT&T has continued to build on its leadership status with a strong focus on systems development, training and sales and marketing of BusinessDirect," said Paul Hughes, VP, Yankee Group. "With its current focus on continuous enhancements to the portal, we envision AT&T increasing its competitive advantage."
The study cited AT&T BusinessDirect for its single sign-on with integrated access, strong functionality that limits manual intervention during the placing of orders and its combined wireline and wireless bill. It also acknowledged AT&T's ability to view alarms or network congestion in map form as part of AT&T BusinessDirect's customizable dashboard on a customer's home page. This feature gives customers access to real-time information such as network alarms, ticket status and order status as an extension of the service's centerpiece data visualization tool.
Each month, hundreds of thousands of AT&T business customers conduct in excess of 3 million ordering and maintenance transactions through AT&T BusinessDirect.
"We are once again honored to be acknowledged by Yankee Group as the leader in business portal services. Zix Corporation Processes More Than 20 Million Electronic Prescriptionse-Prescribing Leader Affirms Industry Dominance
DALLAS, June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), , the leader in hosted services for email encryption and e-prescribing, today announced the Company has processed a record 20 million prescription transactions through the ZixData Center(TM), a SysTrust(TM) certified and SAS-70 accredited center. Over 3,200 active prescribers across eight payor-sponsored e-prescribing programs in 11 states actively use PocketScript(R) to save lives, save time and save money.
"This milestone is further evidence that electronic prescribing is scalable and ready for broader implementation," said Rick Spurr, chief executive officer for ZixCorp. "The payor-sponsorship model that ZixCorp created provides doctors with an easy transition to e-prescribing. ZixCorp has continued to maintain its focus on primary care, with a particular emphasis on small practices of five physicians or less. This segment represents 75 percent of the total market of high prescribers."
ZixCorp's payor-funded model has seen great success among its programs with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, Massachusetts-based eRx Collaborative (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Tufts and Neighborhood Health Plan), Independence Blue Cross, L.A. Care and UnitedHealthcare. Recent published results from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts documented that providers who used an e-prescribing device were able to choose more cost-effective drugs and saved five percent on their drug costs relative to those prescribers who did not use this technology. Aetna also announced that it had experienced a five to seven percent increase in use of on-formulary and generic drugs, respectively, in its New Jersey e-prescribing pilot with ZixCorp, which also facilitates drug-drug and drug-allergy safety checks to increase patient safety.
e-Prescribing Recent Legislative Events & Commentary:
-- Earlier this month (June 2008), both Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), the ranking member on the Finance Committee, both introduced Medicare bills which contain very similar measures with respect to e-prescribing.
-- A Wall Street Journal article, "E-Prescribing Gets Support in Congress," reported June 5 that the apparent bipartisan agreement on e-prescribing seems to signal that those provisions have a good chance of surviving the haggling that will be needed to get a final Medicare bill through the divided Senate(1).
-- A June 13 Wall Street Journal article, "Bill on Medicare Payments To Doctors Stalls in Senate," reported that some common aspects of the Grassley and Baucus bills are likely to survive the Senate's final version, which includes a push for physicians to adopt e-prescribing(2).
Gathering of Industry leaders
In other recent activity, ZixCorp's Chairman and CEO, Rick Spurr co-presented at a symposium where Senator John Kerry (D-MA), former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt all advocated a mandate for writing Medicare prescriptions electronically. In addition, ZixCorp's Kirk Kirkman, Vice President Physician Recruitment and Utilization, co-presented at last week's Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Spring IT Workshop.
ZixCorp's PocketScript(R) e-prescribing service enables physicians to order prescriptions through a secure wireless mobile PDA or secure Web site and deliver them electronically to the patient's preferred pharmacy. Mobility enables PocketScript to provide clinical decision support at the point-of-care with real-time access to a drug reference guide as well as patient-level eligibility, formulary, and co-pay information to aid the prescriber in selecting the most cost-effective prescription based on the patient's benefits. The application also provides comprehensive drug-to-drug and drug-to-allergy interaction alerts based on patient-specific dispensed drug history. Through partnerships with SureScripts and RxHub, PocketScript delivers end-to-end connectivity within the healthcare system to reduce unnecessary costs, improve patient safety and convenience, and enhance practice efficiency.

Ace Hardware, Reddy Ice, MTD Products, and Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust Tout Benefits of Business Weather Intelligence at Chicago Symposium
WAYNE, Pa., June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Planalytics, Inc. hosted a Symposium on Thursday, June 12th at Wrigleyville Rooftops in Chicago. The event featured presentations by clients Ace Hardware, Reddy Ice , MTD Products, and Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust (SFAFT). The speakers highlighted the role of Planalytics in providing weather intelligence to better understand, plan, and optimize their respective businesses.
"Our clients did a wonderful job sharing the actual experiences and successes they have had applying weather intelligence to their business," said Scott Bernhardt, COO for Planalytics. "For those that attended the Symposium, I'm sure it was a real eye opener to hear firsthand accounts of how other companies are proactively addressing this challenge. The speakers gave many examples of how weather can be used on a day-to-day basis to take advantage of opportunities, minimize risks, and manage costs."
Ace Hardware's Director of Inventory Control, Paul Sikes, pointed out that, "We have been able to make weather part of the DNA and culture at Ace, so that when we talk about sales opportunity, sales risk and past performance, weather is now just a part of that." Sikes shared an example from '07-'08 winter season when Ace substantially increased inventories for snow removal products based on Planalytics' projections. "We made an extra $10 million in sales in a tough economy because we planned it and we bought it. We were able to service 91% on the hottest seasonal category I've seen in years at Ace because of the support of Planalytics and the actions we took off that information."
Terri Hulesch, Insight Analyst for MTD Products, noted that before turning to Planalytics the company had "wrangled with how to apply weather" to their outdoor power equipment business for years. Hulesch also noted that with the help of Planalytics, MTD is now "looking at weather-driven demand percentages" and incorporating them into their forecasting systems. "Knowing preseason where to anticipate demand is huge," said Hulesch.
Ben Key, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Reddy Ice remarked that the company is "100 percent weather-driven ... selling 70 percent of its product in four months." Capitalizing on the sales opportunities brought on by heat waves and severe weather such as hurricanes or tornados is critical for an ice producer in the Sunbelt states. "We need to be ready for that spike in our business," Key said. "We normally keep a two-day inventory. So the more we can frontload (our retailers) with information," the better equipped they are to handle the surge and have product when the demand is highest.
SFAFT is a non-profit organization that provides marketing support to Subway's franchised restaurants. Adam O'Hara, Manager of Reporting and Analytics for explained in his presentation how the company isolates weather's impact on sales through "a transaction-based model" specifically developed with Planalytics. "Our weather-driven demand number is tied directly to what percentage of our sales were up or down," O'Hara remarked. "You would be amazed at the correlation between how our volume performs and how the weather performs." Identifying the degree to which sales are impacted by weather enables SFAFT to better measure the effectiveness of advertising and to optimize the timing of programs going forward.

Open Text's Records Management Solutions Rated "Strong Positive" in Leading Analyst Firm ReportHighest Possible Rating Among Vendors in Comprehensive Report
CHICAGO, June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Open Text(TM) Corporation , a global leader in enterprise content management (ECM), today announced that it has received the highest rating possible, a "Strong Positive," in analyst firm Gartner's 2008 "MarketScope for Records Management," report published on May 20, 2008 and authored by Kenneth Chin. Gartner analyzed records management market and software products from 11 major vendors.
In its review of the records management market, Gartner forecasted a strong five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25 percent between 2008 and 2013, pegging the market today at about USD $400 million in 2007 revenue, an increase of 30 percent from 2006. Gartner sees strong demand from large enterprises, but also from government and midsize organizations over the forecast period. Compliance, regulatory and legal/discovery issues continue to be important in organizations' need for records management solutions.
Among trends in the report, Gartner cited continued consolidation of vendors and the bundling of records management products with enterprise content management and archiving systems. Last fall, Open Text announced Enterprise Library Services (http://www.opentext.com/news/pr.html?id=1951), which integrates its leading records management software with metadata management, archiving and storage management for content across a range of systems including SAP solutions, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, email, file systems and Open Text ECM solutions.
Strong Positive Rating
Gartner considers vendors receiving a "Strong Positive" rating to be "a solid provider of strategic products, services and solutions," and suggests that existing customers "continue investments," while potential customers "consider this vendor a strong choice for strategic investments." Vendors are rated along a five-step scale: Strong Positive, Positive, Promising, Caution and Strong Negative. Gartner evaluates how each vendor measures against criteria for the records management market.
"The culture of compliance that has weighed on the minds of senior management for the last few years continues in this era of electronic discovery and litigation readiness," said Peter Lipps, Vice President & General Manager, Enterprise Records Management Business at Open Text. "The retention policies, extended metadata management and security of content delivered by Records Management software play a central role in giving companies the controls they need, as the source and form of corporate content evolves in the increasingly collaborative global enterprise. We believe that Gartner's 'Strong Positive' rating confirms our leadership in records management. Open Text is committed to delivering superior records management and compliance offerings, so that customers will have the tools they need to meet not only the challenging legal and regulatory requirements they face, but also to ensure consistency of retention and capture practices even as innovative new content creation tools are adopted by Web 2.0 savvy business users."
Open Text is a worldwide leader in records management, offering the industry's most comprehensive set of solutions to extend records management across the full range of content types stored in multiple systems, including SAP, SharePoint, email, instant messaging, file systems, and Open Text content repositories. Open Text's records management solutions are certified as compliant with the U.S. Department of Defense 5015.2-STD requirements, United Kingdom's TNA regulations and Australia's VERS regulations, all key standard for records management software used in corporations and governments.

Texas Instruments DLP(R) Products Praised by the Industry for Superior ReliabilityLower cost of ownership for projectors powered by DLP(R)
LAS VEGAS, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments (TI) and its international customer base today at InfoComm 2008 celebrate the superior reliability of products built upon the DLP chip. The benefits to DLP consumers are inherent in the innovation of its chip technology that cannot be replicated by competitors.
A recent test conducted by independent testing organization Intertek on data projectors supports the advantages of DLP technology in front projection. The findings revealed that all LCD projectors tested, including Epson's newest Dream Seven panel projectors, showed image "burn-in" when a corporate logo was displayed in the same place in a series of presentation materials in a typical business usage scenario. The testing showed that text and images can leave a ghosting or "burn-in" effect following as little as two hours of on-time operation. The effect may take time to dissipate.
The recent testing confirms DLP's position as an industry market leader in projector reliability. Coupled with the many filter-free DLP models available, total cost of ownership for DLP projectors is often dramatically lower than other projector technologies.
"While technology should enhance learning in schools, ongoing maintenance and related lost user productivity pose hidden costs to reaching those goals," said Rich Kaestner, Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) TCO/VOI Project Director. "Education administrators require the lowest total cost of ownership, reviewing ongoing lifecycle costs when looking at projectors."
The DLP front projection chipset is based on the same technology that powers the largest and brightest projectors found in movie theatres and large venues worldwide as well as the tiny Pico-projector made for mobile applications.
"Our customers expect a chip that will perform at the same level for the life of the unit, and DLP is proving to be the only option that meets these end user demands," said Lars Yoder, vice president and business manager, TI's DLP Front Projection Business Unit. "The stability of the DLP chip has helped multiple manufacturers to increase sales, elevate their brand and become leaders in the space."
The DLP chip has been praised by the industry for its bullet-proof reliability. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) recently gave TI's DLP chip -- the DMD -- the Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark award. The designation indicates a significant step forward in the evolution of mechanical engineering and is the best-known example of its kind. The unwavering performance and reliability of the microscopic array of digital micromirrors that are individually controlled was the key source of praise from ASME.

Texas Instruments DLP(R) Products Demonstrates Innovation Leadership with New Prototypes Including Lamp-Free ProjectorDLP unveils the world's first 3-D Front Projector and shows the first DLP Pico chipset product
LAS VEGAS, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments (TI) today at InfoComm DLP(R) Products introduced the industry's first home theater lamp-free projector that utilizes a PhlatLight(TM) LED light source and a BrilliantColor(TM) chipset. This technology demo delivers a superior 1080p picture for which DLP technology is known, while eliminating maintenance costs such as lamp replacements and filter changes required by some competing projector products. Multiple DLP customers have plans to develop DLP lamp- free LED-based projectors, including Optoma, with units expected to ship in late 2008. Similar to the deployment of DLP Product's now popular BrilliantColor technology, the solid-state, lamp-free innovation will first be incorporated into home theater units and proliferate through corporate and education product lines thereafter.
DLP also introduced the first 3-D front projector with Norwegian manufacturer, projectiondesign, and the brand new pico-projector stand-alone product with Optoma. The 3-D portable high-resolution active stereoscopic single-chip projector is designed for the demanding visualization, simulation and entertainment environments in applications that have not been able to achieve this level of performance in the past, while the pico product uses a pioneering DLP Pico(TM) chipset for mobile applications.
Benefits of Lamp-free
Due to the inherent switching speed of the DLP chip and advancements in LEDs from Luminus, a leader in LED manufacturing, consumers will benefit from the increased picture quality, reliability and value found in this new projector category. The reflective nature of the mirrors on the DLP chip allow more light to reach the screen resulting in a 50% increase in color gamut range producing more than 200 trillion colors and a contrast ratio in excess of 500,000:1. The proprietary combination of LED illumination, coupled with DLP technology elevates picture quality to a new level while eliminating the traditional projection lamp.
In addition to the expanded color and contrast performance, the illumination system has an incredibly long life and offers up to 30% lower power usage and, most significantly, hundreds of dollars in savings from lamp purchases.
Due to the sealed DLP optics, DLP projectors are inherently prepared to withstand dusty environments and unlike projectors based on other technologies; do not require a filter to protect the optics. Most DLP projectors are filter-free. This important value attribute will remain true with new lamp-free DLP projectors, eliminating potential costly filter cleaning and replacements required by other technologies.
DLP is leveraging strengths from its other leading product lines for the new lamp-free projectors. Since 2006, lamp-free DLP HDTVs with LED-based illumination systems have been available from Samsung. To date, nearly 150,000 of these units have shipped.
DLP Products is featuring other market leading innovations at InfoComm booth #C909, Central Hall, including

Microsoft Launches New Version of Consumer Engagement Reference Architecture for Health Plans - With Guidance for 'Cloud'-Based ServicesCERA v4 connects with Microsoft HealthVault and Windows Live, and provides guidance on using Silverlight 2.0 to create compelling user experiences.
SAN FRANCISCO, June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Spurring health plans to proactively engage consumers, Microsoft Corp. today announced the release of its Consumer Engagement Reference Architecture (CERA) version 4, providing guidance for the first time to help payers connect to "in the cloud" platforms and services such as HealthVault, Windows Live and more.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)
As a stand-alone module under the Connected Health Framework for Health Plans -- launched in 2007 -- CERA v4 is composed of a working demo and documentation, as well as soon-to-be released guidance, architectural blueprints and freely available code. CERA v4 builds upon prior releases of CERA by adding guidance for health plans to connect with HealthVault -- Microsoft's consumer health platform -- Windows Live and other online services.
"Health plans face a challenge in engaging consumers in their health, as evidenced by low member portal traffic and adoption rates," said Dennis Schmuland, U.S. health plans industry solutions director at Microsoft. "The Consumer Engagement Reference Architecture provides guidance to health plans and solution partners on effective ways to accelerate consumer adoption by placing them in control of their health and health information - and keeping them engaged over the course of their lifetimes."
The interaction of CERA v4 with HealthVault, a technology platform that helps consumers collect, store, use and share their personal health information in a security-enhanced environment, is critical to keeping consumers engaged, as it puts them at the center of their health decisions and information, while enabling the exchange of information among different health services and devices at their discretion. It is designed to help members store an array of health records in their HealthVault accounts, including continuity of care documents, prescription medication lists, health histories, hospital discharge summaries, lab test results, fitness data and Web search results.
CERA v4 also features authenticated sign-on via Microsoft's LiveID technology, and software-generated "moments of participation," which are meaningful interactions with people, software agents, natural interfaces and devices that make positive health changes more natural for the consumer. These "moments" are enabled by extending health plan information and interactivity to multiple channels and are powered by Web 2.0 technology such as Microsoft Silverlight 2.0. In fact, CERA v4 provides guidance to health plans on how to use Silverlight Mobile to extend their experiences to mobile devices, allowing it to meet consumers within the context of their digital lifestyles. Mashup technology utilizes the Microsoft platform to bring data from different sources together in one display, so that health plans can manipulate provider data to be mapped to geographical and cost treatment information, for example.
Additional guidance within CERA v4 includes how to use voice-recognition technology from Tellme Networks Inc., a Microsoft subsidiary, as well as natural-language technology powered by Microsoft Automated Service Agents, which helps health plan organizations extend the impact of human coaches, care managers and providers by engaging consumers in conversations and allowing them to ask for help in their own words. Consumers can report daily or weekly progress on key health measures, and receive reminders for key events such as taking medications and getting preventative tests.
Those interested in more information or in viewing a demo of CERA v4 should contact hlthplan@microsoft.com. The CERA v4 code and design blueprint will be available by July 2008 at no cost (connect-time charges may apply) for download from the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Healthcare Industry Center at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/architecture/bb231558.aspx.

Snack Food Manufacturer Enhances Customer Service and Sales Team Productivity With Microsoft Windows MobileLance implements new mobile solution, increasing application capabilities for 1,400 salespeople.
REDMOND, Wash., June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Microsoft Corp. today announced that Lance Inc., a producer and distributor of snack foods in the United States, has implemented a new mobile solution powered by Windows Mobile and Apacheta Corp.'s RouteACE software. The solution is helping the company's 1,400 direct-to-store delivery salespeople improve customer service, run their routes more efficiently, track and manage inventory, and access reports on demand.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)
Lance, based in Charlotte, N.C., needed a mobile application that it could deploy, change and support more efficiently. Its legacy mobile application was becoming more difficult to maintain, and the mobile handheld computers were failing more frequently. In particular, the process of synchronizing the devices to the company's servers was too slow and was hurting sales team productivity.
"Device failure rates had been increasing for several years," said Shawn Cherry, director of applications at Lance. "The business couldn't tolerate it anymore. Our immediate objective was to eliminate the downtime due to failed devices -- and fast."
Lance selected Apacheta Corp.'s RouteACE direct store delivery software for its mobile application because of the integration it provided with Microsoft's .NET Compact Framework.
"We already had experience using Microsoft .NET technology to develop desktop and server applications, and knew that Windows Mobile would enable us to take advantage of that same skill set," Cherry said. "We also knew that Windows Mobile would enable us to choose from a broad range of applications."
Throughout the southeast United States, Lance relies on its direct-to-store delivery model for hundreds of millions of dollars in annual sales. Its sales team members serve approximately 65,000 stores across 25 states. Sales members manage their own inventory and handle all tasks, from taking customer orders to making deliveries.
"With a direct-to-store delivery model, it's important our sales team has the tools for complete visibility over their value chain to make on-the-spot sales promotion decisions," said Mark Carter, vice president of Strategic Initiatives at Lance. "By increasing our investment in technology, we are able to meet customer needs more quickly and improve the level of service we provide our retail partners."
The RouteACE mobile application and new handheld computers powered by Windows Mobile provide the sales team with the tools to accurately manage inventory, streamline delivery logistics, develop pricing models, place orders and run reports. The new solution also allows Lance to respond more quickly to changes in its business environment. By using Apacheta's VisualACE Business Process Designer -- an add-in tool for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 -- Lance is able to rapidly customize the RouteACE application, shrinking the time required to modify and deploy application changes across the work force from months to weeks or even days.
In addition, synchronization of the mobile devices is conducted wirelessly using Apacheta communications middleware. The data is stored in the Microsoft SQL Server CE 2.0 relational database running on the handheld computer, and is uploaded to the Web servers running Windows Server 2003 and Apacheta ServerACE software. The data is then kept in a database running Microsoft SQL Server 2005, which is connected to Lance's enterprise resource planning solution.
"Device startup times are down to less than a minute, and synchronization times are at least 50 percent faster," Cherry said. "Even over dial-up lines, the process takes only a few minutes. With the increased application responsiveness and new capabilities that our salespeople now enjoy, they can complete more stops per day."
Lance has also received additional benefits from the new technology, including bar code scanning to track more than 300 stock-keeping units (SKUs) and certify the electronic interchange of data with 12 retailers -- up from only two with the old mobile devices. Exchanging data electronically with retailers decreases the time salespeople need to spend at each store.
"In an industry where decisions are often made on the road to meet real-time customer demand, it's important for employees to have access to accurate business data," said George Taylor, director of U.S. consumer goods industry solutions at Microsoft. "By getting information streams into employees' hands through mobile devices, companies like Lance are empowering their people to work together and make informed business decisions."

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Uses SimWelder From SGI and VRSim for Vocational TrainingSGI Professional Services Delivers 20 Energy-Saving Virtual-Reality Welding Training Systems to 20 California Prisons
SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Seeking a more cost-effective, energy-conscious and safer way to train inmates in industrial skills, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) purchased 20 SimWelder(TM) units from SGI and VRSim, an SGI(R) channel partner. Inmates throughout the state will learn a variety of specialized welding skills that will help them to secure jobs upon parole. SGI Professional Services delivered the 20 SimWelder units in January and instructor training has just been completed. The virtual-reality welding programs, with 27 students per class, will begin soon at 20 separate sites, ranging from high security prisons to Level 1 (minimum security) facilities.
"There are many benefits to the SimWelder, but I think the main one is the cost-avoidance to the institutions of not having to purchase steel, wire for the wire feeds and the different types of welding rods," said Art Hernandez, Vice Principal, Vocations, Office of Correctional Education, CDCR. "There's also savings in electricity. Instead of the high electrical demands needed for regular welding machines, the SimWelder simply needs a 110-volt outlet. That's a huge cost savings that's exponential because we're running 20 units, at 20 different institutions."
Using SimWelder, students enter an interactive virtual environment that merges computer-generated data with physical props. By simulating welding, no gas is burned, no metal is consumed, and no waste is created. Additionally, students get more practice passes and instructors get better data. SimWelder augments traditional training methods by providing significantly more passes to students and giving instructors objective feedback, safely preparing students to work with real materials.
VRSim personnel trained CDCR's traditional welding instructors, giving direction and detailed instructions on how to assemble the machines, load the software, and run the calibrations.
"At the end of the training, I'd say at least 95 percent of the instructors were very positive," said Hernandez. "They are really excited about using these machines in the classroom, especially being able to teach muscle memory on carrying a bead and working with aluminum and light steel. An added plus is the SimWelders teach both Shielded Metal Arc Welding and Gas Metal Arc Welding. Instructors are also looking forward to the Pipefitter-Welder training software that will be available from VRSim next year, because pipefitting is a viable job market and a niche, high paying job skill for parolees to have."
"Based on what I've learned, the SimWelder accelerates the training curve," said James Bruce, Vocational Vice-Principal, CDCR. "We're anxious to find out what kind of reduction we'll have in training time. We would like to send inmates back to the community prepared for parole, prepared to secure a job and prepared to become productive members of our society."
Bruce expects the SGI-VRSim SimWelder will ultimately result in more students certified in the various American Welding Society certifications prior to their parole. A steel workers union in the Bay area and a major shipyard in San Diego have expressed an interest in hiring welding graduates as well as some of the other vocational trades the CDCR teaches.
"We are pleased with the reception SimWelder has received at CDCR," said Matthew Wallace, CEO and President of VRSim. "I am confident that the enthusiasm for virtual training shown by the instructors will ensure a substantial gain in basic welding skills for the inmates. We continue to see significant rapid skills development through the use of SimWelder."
With SimWelder, real-time visual cues lead students to better kinesthetic awareness. SimWelder is customizable to enterprise specific parameters such as travel angle, speed, stickout, and weave pattern. The training system provides objective feedback: Each weld pass creates a detailed student report based on empirical data. The SimWelder system currently operates in both Spanish and English, with additional languages planned for the future.
"The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is empowering inmates to take control of their lives by equipping them with state-of-the-art training in vital industrial skills," said Bob Pette, vice president of SGI Professional Services. "While we have been pleased with the adoption of SimWelder technology across such diverse industries as the military, technical colleges, and manufacturers, we are now even more excited to see these significant environmental, safety and cost-reduction benefits adopted at the state level to benefit the citizens and taxpayers of California."

Anaren's matched "0404" balun simplifies the new CC2500 RF transceiver bill of materials, helping to maintain the overall low system cost of TI's industry leading multi-channel radio for low-power wireless applications. Operating in the 2.4 GHz frequency band, the CC2500 model includes several useful digital features, including full-packet handling, FIFO buffers, clear channel assessment, wake-on-radio, and more.

"Based on the expertise and tiny form factor Anaren delivered for us on the CC2420 and CC2430, partnering with them again on this new model was a simple decision," said Vidor Bergli, Texas Instruments Product Marketing Manager. This product, he indicates, is aimed squarely at the wireless game controllers, keyboard/mouse, automatic meter reading, and home/building automation markets. "Some of our customers have limited RF expertise, so a lower component count alternative to our traditional lumped element approach will speed-up development and reduce time to market," Bergli added.
Anaren's "0404" balun is part of the company's fast-expanding family of consumer-electronics sized passive softboard component solutions, which includes 0404, 0603, and 0805 baluns, couplers, power dividers, and RF crossovers. As with all standard components from Anaren, its "0404" baluns are backed by the Anaren-exclusive 100% On-Spec(TM) guarantee and B-There(TM) service commitment that ensures on-time delivery. Samples are available within 24 hours for qualified prototype work. And complete specifications are available on the associated Anaren datasheet, available on-line at http://www.anaren.com/.
