SonicWALL Takes on Non Delivery Report (NDR) Spam SurgeEmail Security 6.2 Implements Bounce-Address-Tag-Validation (BATV) to Ensure Message Legitimacy
SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SonicWALL, Inc. , a leading secure network infrastructure company, today announced SonicWALL Email Security 6.2, which features the Bounce-Address-Tag-Validation (BATV) specification to combat an increase in Non-Delivery Report (NDR) spam or backscatter messages. With the BATV mechanism turned on, the product can distinguish a legitimate NDR message from an NDR spam message -- dropping the connection from the NDR spam server.
NDR spam is yet another form of spam mimicking a useful email capability -- the bounce back message received when a valid email is unable to make it to its final destination inbox. By implementing BATV, each outbound message is "tagged" with a private key, transparently to the sender. Arriving NDR messages are checked for the "tag" to ensure the validity of the inbound NDR email with legitimate NDR messages being delivered to the receiver as desired. Because SonicWALL Email Security can process both inbound and outbound email on the same system the actual implementation of BATV can be seamless to the customer as well as the end-users of the system.
"More than 90 percent of the email messages our customers receive are spam, phishing, viruses, or policy violations -- simply junk mail," said Andrew Klein, Email Security Product Manager for SonicWALL. "For NDR spam, the real solution is to not only to block invalid messages and allow legitimate ones, but to make the process easy for the administrator. With email security 6.2, administrators will no longer have to write, manage and update countless policies and rules for NDR spam. BATV is an easy and effective method to detect and drop fake NDR messages with minimal overhead and no additional administration."
Other SonicWALL Email Security 6.2 features include:
-- Enhanced international effectiveness by improving language detection capabilities. This allows SonicWALL Email Security to properly determine the language of an email regardless of the tricks a spammer may use to disguise or misuse different character sets. In this release Dutch, French and Swedish are added
-- Enhanced performance monitoring which allows administrators to see a visual representation of performance metrics on the SonicWALL Email Security system
-- Simplified Licensing -- SonicWALL has eliminated user-bands and now allows a customer to choose any SonicWALL Email Security Appliance or Software system for their organization. Subscription services can be purchased and stacked in user packs of 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 750, 1000, 2000, 5000, and 5000+ as needed

SAN ANTONIO, June 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Phone home. For most U.S. troops stationed overseas, it's at the top of their to-do list. To help keep them connected with loved ones and celebrate Independence Day, AT&T Inc. is donating 10,000 prepaid phone cards. This is the second installment of more than 30,000 prepaid phone cards that AT&T will give to U.S. service men and women in 2008. With a retail value of more than $200,000, the 2008 donation builds on more than 85 years of AT&T support for U.S. military families and a 20-year partnership with the USO, which will distribute the cards.
The latest donation marks 20,000 phone cards donated thus far this year via direct handouts with the USO. This set of 10,000 phone cards will be distributed on overseas military bases during USO entertainment tours that are slated for the weeks surrounding Independence Day. According to AT&T, this donation is in honor of U.S. military families, whether they are on active duty or have a loved one who is actively serving.
In the coming weeks, the USO will distribute the phone cards to troops who are serving throughout Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, South Korea, Japan and Europe. Each donated phone card will provide 20 free minutes of talk time from Iraq to the U.S.
"As we celebrate one of the most patriotic holidays of the year," said Glenn Lurie, president, national distribution, AT&T, "we also remember those who are separated because family members are serving active military duty away from home. We hope to connect the families who are making such tremendous sacrifices every day."

In the past 20 years, AT&T has contributed tens of millions of dollars to the USO in support of the Operation USO Care Package and USO Operation Phone Home(R) programs as well as USO entertainment tours; and has helped the USO boost troop morale through funding regional operations in Europe, Southwest Asia and the Pacific.

RFMD(R) Releases Industry's First GaN CATV Amplifier ModulesGaN Amplifiers Deliver Unmatched Performance And Design Flexibility
GREENSBORO, N.C., June 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- RF Micro Devices, Inc. , a global leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance radio frequency systems and solutions, today released the industry's first gallium nitride (GaN) based CATV amplifier modules. The D10040200PH1 and D10040230PH1 are designed for use as power doubler amplifiers in current and next generation CATV infrastructure applications, including line amplification and hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) optical nodes.
The D10040200PH1 and D10040230PH1 feature 20 dB and 23 dB of gain, respectively, and are the first power doubler amplifier modules to utilize an ultra-linear, high-efficiency GaN process technology. By combining multiple compound semiconductor technologies in a highly integrated, hybrid amplifier module RFMD(R) designers are able to produce unmatched performance across all critical multi-carrier distortion parameters while also increasing output power capability and efficiency. With this unique blend of performance attributes, the D10040200PH1 and D10040230PH1 deliver significant improvements over competing devices in all key parameters and provide the utmost in design flexibility -- all while maintaining the ease of use CATV infrastructure original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have come to expect from industry-standard SOT115J packaged amplifier modules.
As an example, CATV infrastructure designers can utilize either the D10040200PH1 or D10040230PH1 in HFC optical nodes to increase final power output by 2 to 3 dBmV over competing devices while maintaining equivalent multi-carrier distortion performance, in particular Carrier to Intermodulation Noise (CIN) levels. Alternatively, when best-in-class CIN performance is desired, RF output drive level may be reduced with minimal external tuning -- easing implementation for equipment OEMs.
"RFMD's innovative implementation of GaN in this new generation of CATV amplifier modules dramatically improves CIN performance at an opportune time in the CATV market," said Alastair Upton, general manager of RFMD's Broadband and Consumer Business Unit. "As multiple system operators (MSOs) increase digitally modulated transmissions over their CATV infrastructure and continue to implement fiber deep programs, the low distortion and high output power of these breakthrough products enable OEMs to better service the demand for higher-performance CATV infrastructure equipment."
Technical features of the D10040200PH1 and D10040230PH1 include:
-- +24 Vdc supply voltage
-- Industry-standard SOT115J module package
-- No external input/output matching with minimal external support components
-- Maximum CTB of -74 dBc and CSO of -68 dBc
-- Industry-leading CIN of 65 dB minimum for the D10040200PH1 and 63 dB minimum for the D10040230PH1
Production quantities of D10040200PH1 and D10040230PH1 are available immediately and based on design win activity RFMD anticipates shipments will commence within the current calendar year. For more information about RFMD's power doublers and other CATV products please see http://www.rfmd.com/broadbandcatv. Specific test parameters and other information about the D10040200PH1 and D10040230PH1 are available at the following URL: http://www.rfmd.com/powerdoublers

CCID Consulting: Three Networks Convergence is Double-edged Sword of Telecom Operations
BEIJING, June 25 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (Hong Kong: 8235.HK), recently released its article on three networks convergence.
Three networks convergence is challenging the traditional telecom operation mode. Three networks convergence not only brings great opportunities, but also brings some questions needing to be solved, which becomes a double-edged sword of telecom operations.
CCID Consulting considers the three networks convergence as a new information technology revolution, benefiting the maximum share of network information resources, which is the inevitable trend of information and communications technical development in the future. On one hand, this convergence will drive the development of the telecom technical mobility, broadbanding, IP-based and multimedia, which will become the most powerful platform of telecom carriers' business development. On the other hand, three networks convergence also brings great challenges; traditional telecom carriers have to improve their services so as to have considerable development in the convergence revolution.
First of all, a new operation philosophy, operation mode, and operation business will become telecom carriers' strategy development core. Telecom operation's health development should rely on traditional telecom business, new technology and new business that the three networks bring. Facing new technology and business, how to deal with P2P business, network videophone and the multi-media community, and how to keep healthy market competition will directly decide whether telecom can have a healthy and sustainable development.
Secondly, telecom carriers have to learn from Internet carriers. Facing the three networks convergence, Internet's explosive size and business development, in order to accurately position their location in the value chain, telecom carriers have to fully respect counterparts and game rules, maintain healthy market order, and promote healthy competition so as to promote industrial development.
Thirdly, strengthening the cooperation with TV & radio broadcasting departments will become the best starting point and weapon for success among telecom carriers in three networks convergence. IPTV market development is telecom carriers' good beginning in three networks convergence. Telecom carriers will further discuss new operation mode so as to greet more opportunities and challenges.
CCID Consulting considers that facing the benefits and temptation three networks convergence brings, it is urgent for telecom carriers to fully know the necessity of three networks convergence and telecom operation revolutions, grasp the direction of the three networks convergence, change and improve a new operation philosophy and mode so as to remain invincible in the new network convergence revolution.

Cejka Search Expands to Focus on Key NichesTwo New VPs Bring Expertise in Healthcare Information Technology and Healthcare Foundation Executive Recruitment
ST. LOUIS, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- According to U.S News and World Report, the healthcare industry should continue to grow overall this year. With this growth, the need for experienced healthcare executives also is expected to increase. As a result, Cejka Search, a nationally recognized physician and healthcare executive search firm providing services exclusively to the healthcare industry for more than 25 years, has strategically expanded its leadership team to focus on two growing niches.
Bonnie Siegel and Scott Bates have been named vice presidents of healthcare information technology and healthcare foundations, respectively, in Cejka Search's healthcare executive search practice.
"Bonnie and Scott have both proven themselves as experts in specialized fields and enable us to deliver to our clients a significant competitive advantage in hiring top talent in these growing niches," said Carol Westfall, president of Cejka Search. "Along with our seasoned leaders and experienced search team, they will help continue to further propel our executive search division forward."
The U.S News and World Report also stated that healthcare informatics is one of the ten "ahead of the curve" fields. This point was further enforced on Capitol Hill where Dr. William Hersh, professor and chairman of the Department of Medical Informatics at Oregon Health and Science University, reported that the nation's healthcare system will need 40,000 additional IT employees based on recent study data from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Analytics.
Similarly, healthcare foundations are growing in importance. A recent benchmarking study published by the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy cites a direct correlation between fundraising effectiveness and investment in foundation staff. Consequently, many healthcare organizations are increasing budgets and adding senior-level staff to compete for scarce donor dollars.
"There continues to be strong demand for strategic leaders to meet the increasing challenge facing healthcare organizations to deliver quality care and financial strength," Westfall said. "We are committed to supporting our clients' success with our well-rounded team of highly experienced consultants who create a high-touch client experience while successfully completing the search."
According to the Association of Executive Search Consultants' annual outlook survey, released in January 2008, the executive search industry should continue to grow throughout the year. The survey specifically predicted healthcare to be among the strongest sectors for executive search companies in 2008.
Modern Healthcare ranks Cejka Search among the top five healthcare executive search firms nationwide. The Cejka Search Executive Search division staff has grown by 20 percent since the company's late 2007 move to new headquarters with expanded offices, technology and amenities.
As vice presidents, Siegel and Bates bring extensive experience and leadership to the executive search team.
Siegel has more than 29 years of experience in healthcare information technology executive search, consulting and market research. Prior to joining Cejka Search, Siegel was vice president and executive search consultant at Hersher Associates, Ltd., a national healthcare executive search firm specializing in healthcare information technology search. Her experience also includes a senior leadership position at a national healthcare IT consulting firm. Siegel is an expert at recruitment of all executive IT levels including: CIOs, VPITs, deputy CIOs, clinical IT and informatics professionals and director-level IT positions.
Focusing on healthcare foundations, Bates served in management, executive search and consulting roles in nonprofit fundraising and development in the Chicago area for much of his early career. He recently served as executive director of the St. John's Mercy Medical Center Foundation in St. Louis. With more than 12 years of national executive search experience, Bates has also successfully managed search committees and the recruitment of CEOs, CFOs and many key director-level positions.
Both Siegel and Bates are esteemed experts in their respective fields. Siegel frequently presents at national association conferences and has been published and quoted in industry publications. Bates has published articles and spoken widely on issues such as succession planning, executive career development and the unique process and challenges of recruiting philanthropy professionals.
Siegel earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill. and Bates earned a Bachelor of Science from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

PEER 1 Continues Rapid Growth With Network UpgradeState-of-the-Art Network Paves Way for Future Technology Growth and Innovation
SAN FRANCISCO, June 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Structure08 -- PEER 1 Network Enterprises, Inc. (TSX: PIX), a leading provider of online IT infrastructure, has completed a comprehensive, standardized network upgrade to 10GB/OC192. The upgrade strengthens the IT platform needed for online business growth and new technologies, as well as helping to enable continued innovation in the market. The upgrade also maximizes PEER 1's strategy for offering new infrastructure architectures and its capability to support new technology development.
PEER 1's move to the new 10GB/OC192 architecture enables higher throughput and packet-per-second capability, which meets the needs of industries such as VoIP and gaming. Additionally, the upgrade enables PEER 1 to provide the highest possible bandwidth required by companies specializing in rich-media and streaming applications.
"The growth of new technologies in the IT infrastructure and managed hosting markets is changing the landscape significantly," said Antonio Piraino, senior analyst with Tier 1 Research. "The eventual winners in this space will be those companies that are best able to leverage these new technologies in concert with the efficient use of existent resources to produce services that are genuinely flexible and always available."
PEER 1's long-term strategy for implementing new market innovations is to partner with companies that are experts in specific technologies. In this way the company will not be tied down to an exclusive technology, but instead can take full advantage of the dynamic infrastructure market. This also gives PEER 1 the flexibility to continue to grow and develop with partners as the technology matures.
At the same time, PEER 1's extensive network and hosting services provide the unique opportunity to test what works best for its customers. Since the core requirements for both new technologies and the PEER 1 network are similar, PEER 1 truly understands what is needed to deliver new platforms. And with the strength of its network new technologies can integrate easily into the company's full service solution offerings.
"PEER 1's strategic development for these new technologies enables us to continue delivering world-class service for our customers now and in the future," said Fabio Banducci, CEO of PEER 1. "We are committed to help businesses realize the growing possibilities of the Internet. With the power and breadth of the PEER 1 network, we are in a unique position to promote and support more powerful solutions to benefit both our customers and the industry in general."
The company's distinctive approach enabled PEER 1 to report seven consecutive quarters of record profitable growth, according to third quarter financial results released earlier this year. Construction Industry Leader J.F. Shea Standardizes on Overland's Data Protection to Meet RPO/RTO & Slash Administration by Over 50 PercentBroad Product Portfolio of REO Disk-based VTLs, Scalable NEO and ARCvault Tape Libraries Set New Corporate Direction for Bolstering Business Continuity
SAN DIEGO, June 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Overland Storage, Inc. today announced that J.F. Shea Co. Inc., one of the oldest and most prominent companies in the construction industry, has standardized on REO SERIES(R) disk-based virtual tape libraries (VTLs), as well as NEO SERIES(R) and ARCvault(TM) tape libraries to deliver heightened data protection tailored specifically to the capacity and performance needs of its corporate data center as well as large divisional and smaller, local offices.
Headquartered in Walnut, Calif., J.F. Shea has diversified and grown significantly since its founding in 1881. Major milestones include the company's work on the foundation of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system as well as its contribution to the construction of Hoover Dam. Today, J.F. Shea is perhaps best known for top-notch, quality home building through its Shea Homes division, which currently is the largest corporate segment, with eight divisions in six states.
Several years ago, J.F. Shea migrated many of its mission-critical file servers to a secondary data center at a co-location facility for enhanced security and improved business continuity. The move also led to an opportunity to streamline arduous tape-based backup and recovery operations, which had begun impacting network performance and creating a management burden. J.F. Shea sought a disk-based solution to accelerate backups as well as automate remote backups and restores to reduce frequent trips to the co-lo for tape rotation and management. Additionally, the company wanted to store three-to-five daily full backups on disk to meet its recovery point objective and recovery time objective (RTO/RPO).
With help from Synegi, an Irvine, Calif.-based integrator specializing in the design and implementation of high-performance data protection solutions, J.F. Shea evaluated a variety of disk-based VTLs and expandable tape libraries before deciding that Overland had the broadest disk- and tape-based product portfolio, offering a complete range of data protection choices to accommodate a variety of backup, recovery and long-term data retention requirements across its data center, co-lo and regional sites.
J.F. Shea initially installed a REO 9000 and NEO 4000 for disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) data protection at its co-lo site and then added a REO 4000 and NEO 2000 at its data center. About a year later, REO 4000-NEO 2000 pairs were deployed at the data center and a large division in Arizona. Next, Overland's entry-level REO 1500 and ARCvault 12 tape autoloader were deployed at two smaller divisional offices as part of a company-wide rollout. Plans are underway to deploy additional REO-NE0 or REO-ARCvault pairs at remaining sites.
"There's nothing better than being able to tailor a technology solution with the proper fit for your backup-and-recovery needs instead of being forced into a one-size-fits-all approach," says Ray Hayes CTO of J.F. Shea & Co. "Overland's broad and diversified product line of disk- and tape-based appliances lets us mix and match REO, NEO and ARCvault products based on the amount and value of data in question while also taking into account different RPOs and RTOs for elevated business continuity."
Aside from reducing full backups from 10 to three hours, J.F. Shea keeps several days of backups on disk so restores of recently backed up data now can be accomplished in minutes instead of hours or days. Moreover, administrative overhead has been lowered by 50 percent.
According to Ravi Pendekanti, vice president of worldwide marketing for Overland Storage, the company remains focused on providing a wide assortment of flexible disk and tape product choices. "Not all data is created equal so it's critically important to offer a plethora of best-in-class products that can meet today's business requirements while scaling sufficiently to keep pace with future growth," he says. "Our D2D2T family of expandable disk and tape appliances delivers unprecedented levels of data protection along with superior configuration flexibility."
About Overland Storage
Now in its 27th year, Overland Storage is a market leader and innovative provider of smart, affordable data protection appliances that help midrange and distributed enterprises ensure business-critical data is constantly protected, readily available and always there. Overland's award-winning products include NEO SERIES(R) and ARCvault(TM) tape libraries, REO SERIES(R) disk-based appliances with Virtual Tape Library (VTL) capabilities and ULTAMUS(TM) RAID high-performance, high-density storage. Overland sells its products through leading OEMs, commercial distributors, storage integrators and value-added resellers. Rising Fuel Prices Prompt Students to Call for Greater Adoption of Lecture CaptureMediasiting courses helps relieve pressure on commuting students while boosting enrollment
MADISON, Wis., June 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With gas prices pushing past $4 per gallon, distance-education programs are seeing a boost in enrollment as more students are opting to view lectures online instead of driving to class. Students at over 600 colleges and universities use Mediasite by Sonic Foundry, Inc. to review their course material online anytime without leaving their home or office.
Christopher Pargola, an electrical engineer with the Department of the Navy, is working on his graduate studies online at Villanova University. Using Mediasite saves him a 90-minute round-trip commute to class. "With the exponential increases in the cost of fuel, it has become difficult for students to use their vehicles for more than the bare essentials. It starts to affect any decision you make. You watch your savings account diminish and you think, 'can I even afford to continue my education?'" said Pargola. "Distance learning is the solution. The option to fully complete a master's degree online with Mediasite, without all the extra travel expenses, is invaluable. It eliminates the added fuel expense that commuting back and forth to class creates. These fuel savings are becoming substantial, especially over the course of an undergraduate and graduate education."
Villanova University's College of Engineering distance learning program is seeing enrollment increase as a result of the gas crisis.
"We have seen steadily increasing enrollments since starting our distance program, but the summer has always been flat from year to year," said Sean O'Donnell, director of distance education at Villanova University College of Engineering. "Not the case this year. Our summer distance student enrollment is through the roof. I don't think its any coincidence that it's happened at the same time gas hits $4 per gallon."
Bellevue University also expects to see an increase in online enrollment as a result of gas prices. "A pioneer in online education, BU has always been aware of -- and has conveyed to students and corporate partners -- the tremendous savings using the Internet offers," said Christine Beischel, Dean, College of Distributed Learning, Bellevue University. "Not only does a web-based curriculum using Mediasite save on the cost of gasoline and other travel expenses; it also opens up more courses to more people, since it circumvents difficulties relevant to distance and time commitments."
The Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine has a large number of commuters in its student population who rely on streaming lectures to complement their classroom instruction.
Yvonne Bean, a recent EMBA graduate from UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business, lives 25 miles from campus. "I was shocked to find out how much I was spending each month on the drive to attend classes, study groups and TA sessions," said Bean, who eventually chose to stop commuting to the TA sessions in favor of viewing them over Mediasite. "The benefit of having the knowledge available on Mediasite is second to none. In essence you didn't really miss the class. There's no substitute for that. The information can't be captured any other way."
To reduce the financial drain on students' gas cards, Bean recommends more universities capture their lectures and consider making attendance optional for some courses, encouraging students to watch the webcast instead. "It's something they should think about in the future and ask themselves if students should be required to be in the classroom for every class."
"The economy is changing the way universities are delivering knowledge. They are increasingly seeing lecture capture as a means to counter the higher cost of transportation," said Rimas Buinevicius, chairman and CEO of Sonic Foundry. "The beauty of Mediasite is that it not only relieves financial pressure on commuting students, but also it increases retention as students review course material anytime, and when they have fewer distractions, giving them the power to watch class again at their own pace."
Since its introduction in 2003, Sonic Foundry's Mediasite has set the standard as a transformational communication medium for delivering critical information and sharing knowledge. The patented Mediasite webcasting and content management system quickly and cost-effectively automates the capture, management, delivery and search of rich media presentations that combine audio, video and accompanying graphics for live or on-demand viewing.

Verizon Business' Continuity Plans Allow for Uninterrupted Conferencing Service During Midwest FloodsConferencing Services Quickly Relocated After Evacuation of Cedar Rapids Conferencing Call Center
BASKING RIDGE, N.J., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Whether it's raging rivers in the Midwest, undersea quakes in the Pacific Ring of Fire, typhoons in Asia or hurricanes in America, Verizon Business acts at a moment's notice to protect and restore its network facilities around the world.
The latest test of the company's preparedness for natural or manmade disasters occurred recently when record flooding in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, forced the relocation of Verizon Business' conferencing services. The company quickly implemented an alternate means of providing the services.
Based on its successful track record for protecting its network in emergency situations, Verizon Business Wednesday (June 25) became the first North American-based global communications provider to be recognized by BSI Management Systems as a leading provider of business continuity management services. (See separate news release.)
Verizon Business' 16,000 operations and technology employees monitor and maintain -- around-the-clock, seven days a week -- a leading global IP network with 485,000 miles of fiber-optic cable serving 150 countries and 2,700 cities worldwide. Redundancy and diversity are built into the network at every available opportunity.

When human or natural disaster events strike, the Verizon Business team reacts quickly.
"Our employees are prepared to respond immediately to disruptive events that could impact our network around the world," said Jeannie Diefenderfer, Verizon Business vice president of global network operations. "In today's environment, a company must anticipate and quickly recover from any unexpected event while continuing its regular operations."
Verizon Business has numerous business continuance and emergency management (BCEM) plans that can be implemented within minutes of an event. The company maintains organizational, network, systems and disaster-recovery plans for local, regional, national and global events. These plans are tested regularly to ensure employees are aware of every detail and can perform their jobs in the most difficult situations.
Business Continuity Plans Put to the Test in Iowa
With recent floods in the Midwest, Verizon Business had to implement its proactive business-continuity measures. As flood waters began to rise near network buildings in Iowa and Wisconsin, Verizon Business engaged available company resources throughout the United States. The company's global event network management center in Cary, N.C., which coordinates the protection and restoration of ongoing network related issues around the world, was brought into service first.
The company then activated its local emergency coordinating center, which provided logistical and communications support to the field operation teams near the flood waters. Emergency response teams from several states provided extra personnel and equipment. The Verizon Business National Emergency Coordinating Center (NECC) in Richardson, Texas, was also activated.
In addition to protecting its network, Verizon Business also had to implement a business continuance plan for its own global conferencing organization when flood waters closed its administrative facility in downtown Cedar Rapids. The facility was closed before any flood waters reached it, but almost 800 employees were displaced as a result of this building closure.
"Flood or no flood, we had a conferencing customer who needed 7,000 ports for a conference call, and we had to provide that customer and all customers with the best conferencing services available whether we were in our regular office or not," said Dick Price, Verizon Business executive director of business continuance and emergency management.
"When we were told by city officials that a mandatory evacuation was in process due to the rising water and our building would be closed until further notice, we immediately began steps to relocate the conferencing center," Price said. "Since we have been through similar circumstances of relocating business functions during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City, we are well-versed in responding to these issues quickly."
Working with the BCEM team, the NECC and Verizon Business' Satellite Solutions Group in Plano, Texas, the company was able to implement within six hours a means of providing the conferencing services via satellite.
"This is the beauty of having strategic resources at our fingertips when working major events," Price said. "We can provide complete solutions to some very difficult business issues within a short timeframe."

Verizon Business Receives Prestigious British Standards Institution Designation for Business Continuity SolutionsCompany Is First North American-Based Global Communications Provider Accepted Into Coveted Program
BASKING RIDGE, N.J., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Business has been recognized by BSI Management Systems as a leading provider of business continuity management services, the only North American-based global communications provider to receive such recognition from the world's leading international standards, testing, registration and certification organization.
BSI Management Systems accepted Verizon Business into its Associate Consultant Program (ACP) for BS 25999, a global standard for business continuity management. The BSI-ACP designation follows a rigorous and comprehensive review of Verizon Business' business continuity portfolio and supporting processes and procedures.
[Note: An audio podcast discussing Verizon Business' portfolio of business continuity services, is available at http://www.podtech.net/home/5240/preparing-for-the-unexpected-business- continuity-solutions-from-verizon-business. The BSI-ACP designation reflects Verizon Business' track record of quickly and securely delivering easy-to-deploy, easy-to-use business continuity solutions. For example, the company used satellites to allow relief agencies and flood victims to connect to Verizon Business' global network in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Emergency communications were also provided for portable trailers dispatched by the United States Postal Service (USPS) to affected areas, enabling voice and data services in hurricane-impacted locations along the Gulf Coast.
"Recognition by the British Standards Institution underscores our holistic approach to delivering business continuity solutions and professional-service capabilities in this highly crucial area," said Kerry Bailey, vice president of security solutions, Verizon Business. "Chief information officers consistently rank business continuity as a critical business objective, and BSI-ACP recognition provides important third-party validation of our world-class capabilities and advanced skill sets."
BSI standard BS 25999, created to help companies reduce the risk of business disruptions caused by natural and man-made events, is the world's foremost standard for business continuity management. Developed in consultation with a broad-based group of world-class experts representing multiple industry sectors and government, the standard establishes fundamental processes and principles that enterprises should employ to help maintain continued operations.
Experts estimate that four in 10 businesses do not have a business continuity plan. Yet, according to technology and market research company Forrester, most enterprises consider it a top business objective. In Forrester's February 2008 report, "The State of Enterprise IT Security Adoption: 2007," 78 percent of North American- and European-based enterprise decision-makers surveyed reported that development of business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities are either "important" or "very important" to their IT security organization in the next 12 months.
Comprehensive Business Continuity Portfolio Safeguards Businesses
Verizon Business offers a comprehensive suite of industry-leading global business continuity solutions. Professional consulting services, designed to assess and address critical recovery challenges, include business impact and risk analyses, network assessments, gap analyses and recovery strategies, as well as plan development, implementation and life-cycle management services. The company also offers Verizon Notification Services, a fully automated service that enables communication of time-sensitive information to customers, partners, employees and other key stakeholders via a broad range of wireline and wireless devices.
The Verizon Business portfolio of business continuity services also includes continuity planning software, virtual file-sharing, storage replication and restoration services and a full complement of managed information technology services to help enhance enterprise resilience.
Additionally, Verizon Business offers advanced conferencing, collaboration and contact center capabilities for deployment as part of a comprehensive business continuity plan. These collaborative tools enable organizations to effectively communicate from virtually anywhere at anytime, helping to increase response time and productivity, and reduce downtime from business-impacting events such as floods, hurricanes, power outages and tornadoes. For example, the Verizon Business Web Center, a network-based multi-media contact center, enables employees to conduct business from virtually any location at any time with just a computer, high-speed Internet connection and a phone.
Mobile Command Centers Dispatched in Emergencies
Whether an actual disaster strikes or an organization wants to train during a mock scenario, Verizon Business' state-of-the-art mobile command centers are available for deployment so that communications can be maintained in even the most difficult situations.
Each communications vehicle provides comprehensive emergency services, including enabling organizations to rapidly issue identity credentials or smart cards to first responders in crisis situations. Smart cards help confirm an individual's identity so that only authorized personnel have disaster site access. The emergency communications vehicle fleet is fully outfitted with wired and wireless Internet protocol phones, high-speed Internet connections and satellite capabilities.

Demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the first quarter of 2008 when the company added 1.5 million new customers, and continued its industry-leading customer loyalty rates. Verizon Wireless now serves more than 67.2 million customers nationwide.
Store Manager Steve Fortino encourages area residents to join the company in its efforts to help survivors of domestic violence by bringing no-longer-used wireless phones to the new store for donation to the company's HopeLine(R) phone recycling program. HopeLine collects used cell phones to be recycled or sold and donates the proceeds in the form of cash grants and pre-paid wireless handsets to advocacy groups for use by battered women. Verizon Wireless was the first wireless carrier in the nation to collect and recycle old cell phones, and has done so on behalf of survivors of domestic violence since January 1999 -- first in New Jersey and then across the US.
The South Plainfield Communications Store is one of more than 140 Verizon Wireless retail locations in the New York Metro area.

The release supports all MIPS cores, including performance enhancements in the MIPS32(R) 24K(R) core and the superscalar MIPS32(R) 74K(TM) core, as well as other optimizations. It also adds support for non-position independent code for Linux applications, resulting in increased performance for Linux systems.

We look forward to continuing to work with MIPS on future development and toolset integration."
