    National Instruments Recognizes Global Achievements in Engineering and ScienceGraphical System Design Achievement Awards Honor Innovative Medical, Robotics and Green Applications

    AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 21, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- National Instruments recognized more than 20 innovative applications developed by engineers and scientists from around the world at the inaugural Graphical System Design Achievement Awards on Aug. 5. At the award ceremony held during the NIWeek graphical system design conference and exhibition in Austin, Texas, winners from 10 categories were recognized for developing applications that meet complex engineering and science challenges using graphical system design. Additionally, four applications were presented with the Humanitarian of the Year, Green Engineering Application of the Year, Editor's Choice and Overall Customer Application of the Year awards.

    "These awards uniquely capture the exciting possibilities when you connect advanced product technologies and the domain mastery of our users to contribute to science and engineering at the highest levels," said Dr. James Truchard, president, CEO and co-founder of National Instruments. "These achievements are a glimpse of how graphical system design is playing an increasingly critical role in meeting modern engineering challenges."

    A panel of technical experts, industry specialists, technical trade publication editors and National Instruments executives selected the award winners from the submissions of 110 authors from 13 countries. The panel determined the winning papers based on several criteria including the technical difficulty involved in developing a solution to the engineering challenge and the benefits achieved from using the application.

    The Overall Customer Application of the Year Award was presented to a team of researchers from Kitasato University in Japan for its research using an optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging technique for advanced cancer research. The team developed a prototype medical instrument that uses a high-speed acquisition system with 256 simultaneously sampled channels, making it the fastest OCT system in the world. The high-resolution device, which is an alternative to ionizing radiation techniques, will ultimately be used to safely detect cancer in patients faster than current methods.

    The Editor's Choice Award, which was voted on by a panel of editors from more than 20 technical trade publications, was presented by EE Times Editor Nicolas Mokhoff to Nanyang Polytechnic Institute of Singapore, Schmid Engineering and Analog Devices. The winners collaboratively used graphical system design and high-power embedded processors to develop a six-legged, highly functional robotic spider for use in rescue missions.

    The Green Engineering Application of the Year winner, Loccioni Group of Italy, was recognized by Truchard for creating a test system that measures the flow rates of diesel engine nozzles. Additionally, the Humanitarian Application of the Year Award was presented by NI Business and Technology Fellow and Co-Founder Jeff Kodosky to Sanarus Medical for the development of a less invasive breast tumor treatment device that dramatically reduces the emotional and physical discomfort for patients undergoing tumor treatment.

    Indiana Gov. Daniels Visits EnerDel Plant, Unveils Incentive Package for Major Expansion in Lithium Ion Battery FacilitiesCEO Hails Daniels' Leadership & Support for New Manufacturing Jobs, Cites Growing Demand for Advanced Automotive Power Solutions

    INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels today joined with the CEO and other officials from advanced lithium-ion battery developer EnerDel to announce a set of performance-based incentives associated with major expansion plans at the company's Indianapolis manufacturing facilities. EnerDel leaders praised Daniels for his strong leadership in crafting a package designed to bring new jobs and enhanced competitiveness for the state's high tech and automotive manufacturing base at a crucial time in a growing industry.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080312/CLW018LOGO )

    "Gov. Daniels knows that the future of the American economy depends on clean technology. Automakers are in a global race to deliver a new generation of hybrid and advanced electric vehicles that reduce or eliminate our dependence on the gas pump," said Ulrik Grape, Chief Executive Officer of EnerDel. "He has made an outstanding effort to make sure that Indiana and its people play a key role in this new and growing market. We would not be standing here today without his firm commitment to the future."

    The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered EnerDel up to $7.125 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $58,000 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans. The cities of Indianapolis and Noblesville will consider property tax abatement at the request of the Indy Partnership. The company will also seek local incentive offers from Indiana communities for the third manufacturing location.

    The developer of lithium-ion batteries for hybrid, plug-in electric and electric vehicles will expand its Indianapolis research and cell production center, build and equip a battery pack assembly center in nearby Noblesville, and locate a full-scale manufacturing operation at a still to be selected location in the Hoosier state. The company expects to create more than 850 new jobs across the state through 2012.

    "Eight hundred fifty jobs of any kind is great news. When those jobs are in a technology of tomorrow, like electric cars, it offers the prospect of even bigger news to follow. Indiana has what it takes to lead this automotive revolution and today is step one," said Gov. Daniels.

    A subsidiary of Ener1, Inc., , EnerDel currently operates a 92- person production facility on the northeast side of Indianapolis. The company recently received the prestigious R&D 100 award for excellence in its technology and uniquely innovative design. The award is shared by EnerDel and its partners at the Argonne National Laboratory. EnerDel is also an active participant in the United States Advanced Battery Consortium, which works closely with automakers, component companies and others to accelerate the commercial development of new battery technology.

    Last week, Ener1 announced it had acquired 100 percent ownership of EnerDel from Delphi Automotive, which is undergoing extensive restructuring. Delphi had held a 19.5 percent stake in EnerDel. The new arrangement frees up EnerDel to seek new strategic partnerships with Tier 1 automotive manufacturers and equipment suppliers.

The publicly traded company is led by an experienced team of engineers and energy system experts at its EnerDel subsidiary located in Indianapolis, which is building proprietary battery systems based on technology originally pioneered with the assistance of the Argonne National Lab.

    Ener1 is seeking to become the first company to mass-produce a cost-competitive lithium-ion battery for hybrid and electric vehicles. Demand for battery solutions is being driven by a need to reduce dependence on oil as well as growing concern about vehicle emissions. In addition to the automobile market, applications for Ener1 lithium-ion battery technology include medical, military, aerospace, electric utility and other growing markets.

    EnerDel recently received the prestigious R&D 100 award for excellence in its technology and uniquely innovative design. EMC Unveils Solution Designed to Help Financial Institutions and Creditors Comply With FACTA Red Flags Rules and Prevent Identity TheftConsulting Services Combined with Identity Protection and Verification Technologies from RSA to Help Businesses Successfully Meet Looming Compliance Deadline

    HOPKINTON, Mass., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- EMC Corporation , the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced a new solution designed to help financial institutions and creditors in the United States develop and implement an identity theft prevention program in compliance with the FACTA Identity Theft Red Flags guidelines Section 114 and related regulations. Composed of professional services from EMC Consulting and information-centric security technologies from RSA, The Security Division of EMC, the FACTA Red Flags solution will help financial institutions and creditors meet the November 1, 2008 deadline set by federal bank regulatory agencies to implement a program. The FACTA Red Flags solution from EMC is designed to help organizations build additional customer trust and loyalty, and protect and mitigate risk to information throughout its lifecycle.

    "Financial institutions or creditors that are subject to new and changing regulations should view Red Flags detection as a means to an end of achieving overall enhanced information security and IT security governance," said Ken Herbert, Vice President, Global Financial Services Group, Frost & Sullivan. "A holistic view of information security and Red Flag detection helps align IT investment with business objectives -- securing customer data, transactions, and identities -- and improve customer confidence."

    About FACTA Red Flags

    -- Background: On November 9, 2007, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and five Federal financial regulatory agencies published a series of final rules and guidelines entitled "Identity Theft Red Flags and Address Discrepancies Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) of 2003." Red Flags are relevant indicators of a possible risk of identity theft and Section 114 of FACTA specifically explains rules about the development and implementation of a written identity theft prevention program. The provision recommends that both financial institutions and creditors in the United States assess the likelihood that their customers' accounts are prone to identity theft, and mandates that they then implement a program to identify, detect and respond to its indicators.

    -- Prevention & Mitigation: The regulators explicitly state that, in order to prevent and mitigate identity theft, a compliance program must include policies and procedures that address the risk of identity theft in a manner commensurate with the degree of risk posed. It also states that organizations should respond to Red Flags according to the level of risk by taking into account a variety of "aggravating factors," which include data security incidents, suspicious activity, and reports of fraudulent use.

    -- Examination Procedures: On August 11, 2008, the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) issued Red Flags Industry Guidance and Compliance Procedures to those organizations working to meet the November 1, 2008 deadline under the FACTA regulations. OTS has added FACTA compliance to its examination procedures for regulated entities to determine deficiencies in an organization's ability to comply with Red Flags, reviews of audit reports, and verification of a comprehensive, written Red Flags program and a staff trained to implement it.

    The EMC FACTA Red Flags Solution

    EMC Global Services has created an accelerated process designed to help businesses meet the deadline to comply with FACTA Red Flags guidelines. This new program includes:

    -- Risk Assessment: Determines how FACTA impacts an organization from a regulatory view and identifies what parts of the organization have the greatest exposure to identity theft;

    -- FACTA Policies and Procedures: Brings existing fraud, privacy and customer identification procedures together and models changes to account opening processes, authentication checking, transaction monitoring and the reporting of discrepancies back to the consumer reporting agencies;

    -- Roadmap and Requirements: Helps identify and socialize the needs of the business using a 'current state to future state' roadmap and detailed business requirement documentation;

    -- Technology Design and Deployment of Red Flags Detection Software: Automates the business requirements across multiple customer channels;

    -- Identity Theft Prevention Reporting: Includes metrics that measure the effectiveness of an organization's mitigation program and provides summary reports to the customer's management team and Board of Directors;

    -- Integration: Utilizes third-party customer reporting agency data within existing front- and back-office systems to prevent and detect identity theft;

    -- Program Management Office: Helps clients establish and maintain a management office for the FACTA program; and

    -- Quality Assurance: Provides evidence that FACTA business requirements and controls are implemented and performing effectively

    "While most companies have some form of fraud prevention or data security in place, the FACTA Red Flags guidelines require financial institutions and creditors in the United States to do more by making senior management accountable to its Board of Directors for implementing measures that prevent, detect and respond to identity theft events occurring within their organization," said Denis Mayer, Solutions Partner, Enterprise Compliance and Risk Management Practice, EMC Consulting. "EMC's full spectrum of consulting and product offerings for FACTA compliance provides organizations and senior management with whatever solutions best fit their needs -- all from a single provider -- to help them meet the upcoming FACTA Red Flags deadline."

    In addition, RSA's information-centric security products can be implemented to help organizations meet FACTA Red Flags identity theft prevention requirements in four specific ways:

    -- Verifying Identities without a Prior Relationship: RSA(R) Identity Verification is a knowledge-based authentication system that presents a user with a series of top-of-mind questions utilizing relevant facts about the individual obtained by scanning dozens of public-record databases.

    -- Authenticating Customers: RSA(R) Adaptive Authentication provides monitoring and authentication capabilities based on user activities and risk levels, institutional policies, and customer segmentation. It is deployed at over 8,000 organizations worldwide.

    -- Monitoring Transactions: RSA(R) Transaction Monitoring is an invisible back-end fraud monitoring and detection system that identifies fraud without impacting end-users or disrupting existing processes, systems and authentication mechanisms.

    -- Preventing Phishing: RSA(R) FraudAction(SM) is a real-time fraud protection system against phishing, pharming and Trojan attacks -- including 24x7 monitoring and detection, real-time alerts and reporting, forensics and countermeasures, and site blocking and shutdown. At the core of the service is the exclusive RSA 24x7 Anti-Fraud Command Center that has shut down over 97,000 phishing attacks to date and is a key industry source of information on phishing and emerging online threats.

    "Our FACTA solutions help spur a broader corporate governance strategy that enables businesses to comply with future regulations and protect information throughout its lifecycle -- wherever it is across the organization, said Steve Preston, Senior Director, Compliance Solutions at RSA. "Using our solutions, customers can gain more visibility into their organizations, be better positioned to use that information for heightened business intelligence, and ultimately map their IT security investments directly to business objectives."

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020613/NVDALOGO)

    With CUDA technology becoming a standard in the computing market, the CUDA Developer Conference is a must-attend event for university researchers and commercial software developers. Sessions are designed for both experienced CUDA programmers as well as those new to the technology.

    One of the highlights will be a session by William Dorland of the University of Maryland and his work in porting simulations of black hole dynamics, as well as ported plasma turbulence and n-body dynamics to clusters of NVIDIA GPUs, using CUDA technology. Modest-size codes, of a few thousand lines, were ported to the GPU hardware in less than a day with speedups of 25-30 times that achieved with traditional architectures. Entanet Connects With Global Crossing Ethersphere Service to Deliver Benefits of ADSL2+ BroadbandCustomers Benefit From High-Speed Stable Broadband

    BASINGSTOKE, England, Aug. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Global Crossing , a leading global IP solutions provider, today announced that it is supporting Entanet International Ltd.'s new wholesale Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line 2+ (ADSL2+) broadband service. Using Global Crossing Ethersphere(TM) and other transport services, Global Crossing has provided core network connectivity from Entanet's central network nodes to British Telecom (BT) Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) aggregation points in London and around the U.K. Ethersphere provides true utility grade service and is ideal as a transport for private enterprise customer Internet Protocol (IP) networks, or as complete fabric for an ISP's national Ethernet services.

    Entanet is a leading communications provider of business-class voice and data connectivity solutions and delivers its services via a partner channel. In 2007, Entanet was selected to be the only non-BT company to participate in the BT 21st Century Network (21CN) WBC trial, with Global Crossing providing connectivity.

    Following the success of the pilot in Birmingham and Wolverhampton, the roll-out to the remaining WBC aggregation points, which began earlier this year, is now almost complete.

    "In selecting connectivity partners, Global Crossing stood out for a number of reasons in what was a highly competitive bidding process," confirmed Entanet's chief technical officer, Steve Lalonde. "Global Crossing was extremely cost-competitive, has excellent project management skills and the strength of its network has helped us expand our high-speed broadband and stronger converged voice and data offerings to 99 percent of the UK population.

    "In addition, we already had a long-standing, successful relationship based on a high-level Service Level Agreement, which gave us complete confidence in Global Crossing's ability to consistently deliver superior quality network support."

    "Today's businesses demand more robust and resilient connectivity, as they face increasing communications challenges in linking with a greater number of offices and remote workers, as well as sharing greater volumes of IP data and voice traffic," said Anthony Christie, Global Crossing's managing director, EMEA. "Like us, Entanet has a well-deserved reputation for driving leading-edge technology solutions that directly meet today's customer needs. As a result of this strategic partnership, ISPs and resellers can secure competitive advantage by providing a broader range of faster, more stable and cost-effective connectivity solutions."

    Entanet has been proactively involved in the development of 21CN and worked with Global Crossing from an early stage. "In what is a strategically important move for the company, we have made a significant investment in our own network, allowing us to take WBC," said Lalonde. "As part of our 21CN infrastructure development, a key goal was to improve delivery, enabling channel customers to offer more stable and potentially faster ADSL2+ broadband, as well as broader Quality of Service options for those end-users looking to prioritise traffic."

    ABOUT ENTANET

    Entanet is a leading communications provider of business class voice and data connectivity services, delivered via a channel of Partners. Its voice and data connectivity services meet the needs of diverse customer groups -- reseller Partners looking to market packaged Entanet services; and wholesale Partners looking to take service components in order to sell, deliver and support services entirely under their own brand. The services available to them include wholesale broadband, IP telephony, traditional telecoms such as Wholesale Line Rental and Carrier Pre-Select and bespoke connectivity solutions including leased lines, VPNs, colocation hosting and transit. In 2006 & 2007 Entanet was awarded the accolade of 'Specialist Vendor of the Year -- Products and Services' in the national CRN Channel Awards. It was also awarded Best Internet Telephony and Best Consumer Email at the 2008 ISPA Awards.

    First established in 1996, Entanet is now one of the UK's leading communications providers. With a national network and continued ongoing investment, Entanet is fully committed to delivering the highest standards of voice and data service provision throughout the UK.

    As part of Entagroup, Entanet provides long-term stability and security to its customers. Founded in 1990, Entagroup is a broad-based IT and communications group with annual sales in excess of £200million. For more information, contact marketing@enta.net

Net product sales in the quarter attributable to the epilepsy indication were $32.6 million, an increase of $5.8 million, or 22%, over the first quarter of fiscal 2008, while net sales attributable to the depression indication declined to $0.7 million from $2.2 million in the same period in the prior year.

    U.S. net product sales attributable to the epilepsy indication increased to $25.8 million, compared with $20.9 million in the comparable period of fiscal 2008, an increase of $4.9 million, or 23%.

    International net sales increased by 19% in the first quarter of fiscal 2009 to $7.1 million, up from $6.0 million reported in the first quarter of the prior fiscal year, due primarily to pricing improvements, a higher proportion of sales through direct channels and the impact of foreign currency movements.

    Net sales for the quarter included $0.4 million related to the license fee of $9.5 million received during the third quarter of fiscal 2008.

    Gross profit

    The gross profit for the first quarter of fiscal 2009 represented 86% of net sales compared to 81% in the first quarter of fiscal 2008. This increase is primarily a result of higher production volumes and improved efficiencies.

    Operating expenses

    Operating expenses were reduced by $5.3 million to $26.1 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2009 from the $31.4 million recorded in the comparable period of fiscal 2008 and increased by $1.1 million from $25.0 million in the fourth quarter of the recently completed fiscal year. Balance sheet and cash flow

    Cash increased by $10.1 million to $101.1 million in the recently completed quarter. This increase reflects positive operating cash flow of $6.6 million and an additional $4.1 million resulting from the exercise of stock options.

    Depression indication update

    The company previously announced an effort to identify a partner to assist in the execution of the clinical plan developed for the depression indication. Discussions with potential investors remain ongoing. Our objective is to finalize the course of action by the end of calendar 2008.

    Results and objectives

    "Fiscal 2009 has begun on a positive note," commented Dan Moore, Cyberonics' President and Chief Executive Officer. "The company again recorded operating income, positive cash flow from operations and net income. Our core U.S. epilepsy business showed continued growth, and our international operations posted another good result, with revenues again exceeding $7 million. Overall, our strong operational performance in the first quarter resulted in revenues increasing by 16% over the prior year, as well as significantly higher cash balances.

    "We continue to believe that both the U.S. and worldwide epilepsy markets represent significant opportunities for the company to realize consistent growth in both sales and earnings in the coming years," Mr. Moore continued. "Specifically, we believe that continued corporate focus on epilepsy, improved pricing, geographic expansion and an evolving replacement cycle can together enable us to increase revenues in the medium term. For the longer term, the Cyberonics team is dedicated to development efforts to improve the efficacy of VNS Therapy(TM) for epilepsy, with particular attention to research efforts around seizure detection and stimulation parameters.

    "Indicative of our worldwide focus, we recently received regulatory approval in China and appointed a distributor for that market.

    "Our recent announcement that Jeffrey Schwarz would be stepping down from our Board, and that Joe Laptewicz has accepted a nomination to join the Board is further evidence of the continuing transition of the company," stated Mr. Moore. "We thank Jeffrey for his important contributions to the company's turnaround and look forward to leveraging Joe's significant medical device and neuromodulation expertise as we continue to grow our business."

    Mr. Moore concluded, "We are maintaining our longer term goals for our epilepsy business, which include consistent annual volume growth in the range of 10% to 20% and the achievement of an operating margin of 25% by fiscal 2011. Further, our improved balance sheet provides us with the flexibility to achieve sustained increases in shareholder value. The management and staff of Cyberonics remain focused on executing our strategic plan around epilepsy."

    Fiscal 2009 guidance

    Cyberonics is reiterating its previously provided net sales guidance of $134 million to $138 million. Also, as previously stated, while the company anticipates positive earnings in fiscal 2009, no specific earnings guidance is being provided at this time as the long-term status of the depression indication remains undecided and could potentially have a material impact on net income.

    Additional details will be provided during the upcoming conference call and in the accompanying presentation slides, as described below.

    CCID Consulting: China's Linux Market's Growth Rate Slowed down in 2008Q2

    Product Lines Cluster and Alliance Become Important Competitive Strategy

    BEIJING, Aug. 21 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (Hong Kong Stock Exchange: HK08235), recently released its article on China's Linux market in 2008Q2.

    CCID Consulting's data shows that the size of China's Linux market in 2008Q2 reached 43.1 million Yuan, up 16.2% over 2007Q2. Compared with 2007Q2, the grow rate has slowed down, largely due to decline in centralized purchasing. Large industrial order is few; meanwhile, as the market becomes mature, industrial growth rate starts to slow down. The market transfers from concentration to dispersion, with competition heating up. Also seen is the transition from single server and desktop products to wider product lines and even competition of industrial chain alliance.

    Product Line Cluster and Industrial Alliance Become Manufacturers' Important Strategy

    As Linux market's subject, currently, server still swung around edge application's penetration to edge core application. It would take a long time to realize a breakthrough in the finance and telecom industries, so Linux manufacturers have to seek a breakthrough point besides desktop and server so as to drive Linux's sustainable development. CCID Consulting's research shows that China's major Linux manufacturers have transferred from Linux server and desktop products to product line cluster. Manufacturers' competition is heating up, that competition has transferred from single manufacturer's strength to industrial alliance.

    Besides original server and desktop products, Red Flag actively cooperates with Intel and spare no effort to mobile Linux products. Red Flag's Asianux Company in Wuxi enters its practical operation stage by employing R&D talents and further strengthening joint development and testing with other partners; it acquires more authentications and improves its bargaining power. Turbolinux strengthens the cooperation with MySQL and Intel to promote Linux's extended application. China Standard Software enlarges influence in Office field, build credible and secure philosophy and implement centralization, platform war and service strategy with Linux products. Novell develops its identity authentication and network management products' advantages to drive Linux sales. Novell cooperates with Microsoft to provide users with more interoperability in high performance computing and virtualization fields. Besides developing JBoss middleware products, Red Hat releases OSCI, which aims at financing, governments, telecom, medical care and manufacturing.

    Product line cluster marketing and manufacturers alliance outgoes clear single to market, Linux industrial market's competition width and hierarchy will expand manufacturers' solutions in regions and industries will have more active effort so as to drive the whole market's development.

    Regional Markets will Disperse; SME and Non-Traditional Markets Become More and More Important

    Because of economic rapid growth and users' IT application level's continuous improvement, the big orders of governments, finance and telecom in the early stage of IT application construction are fewer than before. Market demands transfer from concentration to dispersion.

    As for regional markets, the growth rate of IT application level in North China, East China and South China will gradually slow down; the regions with low IT application foundation, such as Northeast, Northwest and Southwest will enjoy rapid growth. The market will develop to 2-3 tier cities; SMEs' huge base, rapid developing IT application demands and sensitivity for price will drive the Linux's development in SME market; the demands of manufacturing, circulation industry, education, medical treatment and social charity industry will gradually release, these fields will become new highlights.

    MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Continuing to provide the highest quality and reliability levels available to the aerospace and avionics markets, Actel Corporation today announced it has become the first field-programmable gate array (FPGA) vendor to achieve SAE/AS9100 certification. Increasingly required by aerospace suppliers world-wide, Actel received the stringent AS9100 certification for its Quality Management System (QMS), which certifies that the company's processes related to design and manufacture of its low-power, programmable logic solutions have met or exceeded the required standard.

    "Actel's SAE/AS9100 certification eases the part acquisition process for our aerospace and avionics customers around the world," said Ken O'Neill director of military products, for Actel. "Further, the achievement of this certification allows our customers to purchase Actel products with the confidence that they are getting the highest quality and reliability while ensuring their cost of ownership goals are met or exceeded."

    Today, the aircraft industry is challenged with mandates to use commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products to obtain cost benefits, yet tasked with meeting extremely high reliability goals. The AS9100 certification has the benefits of reducing costs and improving reliability by consolidating and standardizing the quality requirements and quality systems employed by suppliers to the aerospace and avionics industry.

    The AS9100 standard was developed by Working Group 11 of ISO TC20 and was supported by the International Aerospace Quality Group in order to satisfy internal, government, and regulatory requirements.

    Actel FPGA Devices Offer Flight-proven Reliability

    Aerospace and avionics applications require high levels of reliability while typically operating in a harsh environment. Unlike SRAM-based devices, which experience neutron-induced firm errors, Actel FPGAs offer immunity to neutron-induced configuration upsets, making them better suited to aerospace operational altitudes. Actel's devices are also live at power up, allowing system-critical applications to recover immediately from power out or brownout conditions that can occur from lightning strikes, system or power supply glitches, neutron-induced system resets, and RF interference.

    With more than 20 years of flight-proven reliability, Actel offers low-power flash- and antifuse-based FPGAs for use in aerospace and avionics applications. Actel's AS9100 certification can be viewed at http://www.actel.com/documents/AS9100-2004_Certificate.pdf. More information about Actel's aerospace and avionics offerings can be found at http://www.actel.com/products/solutions/milaero/default.aspx.

    Pratt & Whitney PurePower(TM) PW1000G Engine Completes First Phase of Flight Testing, Prepares for Airbus Flight Test Program

    EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Pratt & Whitney's PurePower PW1000G demonstration engine has completed the first phase of flight testing on a company-owned 747SP flying test bed. The PW1000G engine completed 12 flights and ran approximately 43 hours with tests focused on engine performance and operability. The demonstration engine has been shipped to Toulouse, France, to be installed on an Airbus-owned A340 flight test aircraft. A joint Airbus and Pratt & Whitney flight test program will begin in the fourth quarter, as part of Airbus' on-going, extensive research into new, greener engine architectures. Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies Corp. .

    "The PurePower PW1000G engine continues to perform flawlessly and has accumulated a total of 306 hours of ground and flight testing to date," said Bob Saia, Pratt & Whitney vice president, Next Generation Product Family. "The first phase of our flight test program included full power takeoffs, in- flight performance up to 40,000 feet altitude, engine operability including in-flight starting, and engine operation at extreme aircraft maneuvers. The PW1000G engine's performance has met all of our pre-flight performance targets."

    The PurePower PW1000G demonstrator engine, with Pratt & Whitney's patented Geared Turbofan(TM) technology, completed a 250-hour ground test program in May. The ground test program follows thousands of hours of development testing accumulated on 16 technology rigs at Pratt & Whitney and partner facilities around the world.

    "We now look forward to testing the PW1000G engine on the Airbus A340 flight test aircraft," Saia said. "This second phase of testing, which will include approximately 75 flight hours, will focus on engine performance and acoustic testing while providing valuable installation and operating data."

    Airbus will be the first aircraft manufacturer to fly the PurePower PW1000G demonstrator engine on their own flight test aircraft. Test results will contribute to the company's long-term research and technology assessment of new engine configuration developments.

    In 2007, Pratt & Whitney's PurePower PW1000G engine was selected as the exclusive power for the new Mitsubishi Regional Jet and the Bombardier CSeries. The Mitsubishi Regional Jet program announced its first customer in March 2008, with an order from All Nippon Airways. The CSeries was launched in July 2008 with a letter of interest for up to 60 aircraft from Lufthansa. Both aircraft are scheduled to enter service in 2013.

    The PW1000G engine targets double-digit reductions in fuel burn, environmental emissions, engine noise and operating costs for the next generation of commercial aircraft. The PW1000G engine uses a state-of-the-art gear system allows the engine's fan to operate at a different speed than the low-pressure compressor and turbine. The result is a step-change improvement in fuel efficiency and a slower fan speed for much lower noise. The PurePower PW1000G engine is an all new centerline engine that includes next generation technology in every major module.

    Pratt & Whitney has over 16,000 aircraft engines installed with hundreds of airlines around the world. Additionally, Pratt & Whitney is a leading participant in two joint venture companies that manufacture commercial aircraft engines: International Aero Engines, which makes the V2500 for the Airbus A320 family of aircraft, and the Engine Alliance, whose GP7200 engine is FAR 33 certified for the new Airbus A380.

    Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines. United Technologies, based in Hartford, Conn., is a diversified company providing high technology products and services to the global aerospace and building industries.

    This release includes "forward looking statements" concerning future business opportunities and other matters involving this engine that are subject to risks and uncertainties. Important factors that could cause actual results to differ materially from those anticipated or implied in forward looking statements include changes in the health of the global economy and the strength of end market demand in the aerospace industry; as well as company specific items including the ability to achieve cost reductions at planned levels; challenges in the design, development, production and support of advanced technologies including this engine, and new products including the engine discussed in this press release; and delays and disruption in delivery of materials and services from suppliers.
