AT&T's Networks Moving to Near Full Operation in Wake of Hurricane Gustav; Commercial Power Restoration Critical to Continuing Progress

DALLAS, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. today said the company's major restoration efforts in hard-hit Louisiana and Mississippi are making substantial progress in the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav. The company notes that while restoration is progressing ahead of schedule in the hardest hit areas along the coast, commercial power is still extremely critical to the efforts to bring customers online going forward.

    Service Restoration

More than 2,500 AT&T employees are working to expedite the restoration of communications services for impacted customers in Louisiana and Mississippi. The company's wireless and wireline networks continue to perform well even under increased wireless, voice and text messaging traffic. The company has completed its assessment of the damage to its networks and is focusing its efforts on restoring services in Louisiana in the areas of Baton Rouge, Houma and the Northshore and Coastal parishes around New Orleans as well as in impacted areas of Mississippi.

In Louisiana and Mississippi, as of 9 a.m.: -- Nearly all of the company's wireless cell sites are operational. In the hardest hit areas of Baton Rouge and Greater New Orleans (including Plaquemines, Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes), AT&T teams are focused on providing backup power as needed to the few sites still impacted by the storm. -- All central switching offices are operational, but power issues still exist in some areas of Louisiana, where 18 central offices remain on generator power. -- Ninety-Nine% of remote terminals, which provide broadband service to neighborhoods throughout Louisiana, are operational. While many remote terminals are still operating on battery or generator power, AT&T technicians have restored almost 1,000 units to commercial power. All remote terminals in Mississippi are operational. -- More than 1,500 portable generators have been deployed across Louisiana and Mississippi. -- More than 130 of AT&T's retail store locations are open across the Louisiana. The few remaining stores affected by the storm will open as local conditions allow.

Lack of commercial power persists in many areas of Louisiana. AT&T estimates it is using 45,000 gallons of diesel fuel per day to operate generators that are powering wireless cell sites, central offices and remote terminals in the state.

There may continue to be some service outages in the hard-hit areas of the Gulf Coast, as residents and business owners return to their homes and businesses.

Moving Ahead After Hanna and Preparing for Ike

AT&T's networks performed extremely well related to the landfall of Tropical Storm Hanna over the weekend, and there are no major impacts to any of the company's services as a result of this storm.

AT&T is taking steps to prepare equipment and facilities for a potential strike by Hurricane Ike, which could threaten the Gulf Coast of the United States within the week. The company is identifying areas for the staging of equipment for post-storm response, testing high-capacity backup batteries and topping off fuel for generators positioned at cell sites and switching centers.

    Support in Disaster Areas

In addition to managing ongoing restoration efforts, AT&T has also taken steps to assure that its customers, relief agencies and government organizations are equipped with the means to communicate during this ongoing crisis. These efforts include:

-- Free AT&T Wi-Fi(SM) at locations throughout areas of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas. -- Providing 4,000 free wireless GoPhone devices with $15 in air time to residents who were ordered to evacuate their homes because of Hurricane Gustav. -- Providing free phone calls for hurricane victims at all open company-owned retail locations across Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and portions of northwest Florida, including Pensacola, Fort Walton and Destin. -- In hard-hit Houma and Thibodaux, AT&T is offering free phone calls and phone charging to hurricane victims at two "Stores on Wheels" in these cities. These Mobile Store RVs are serving at temporary AT&T stores with fully functioning store capabilities. -- Providing more than 1,000 AT&T wireless phones for use by American Red Cross personnel. -- Providing more than 500 AT&T wireless phones and 130 AT&T LaptopConnect cards for use by Florida National Guard personnel. -- Providing hundreds of AT&T wireless phones for Corps of Engineers in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. -- Encouraging customers to send $5 donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by sending a text message from their AT&T mobile devices. A customer simply types the keyword GIVE to 2HELP (24357). A confirmation message will arrive within a few minutes, and the customer then replies YES to confirm his or her donation. -- Donating $200,000 this year, in addition to the generosity of its customers, to the American Red Cross for emergency relief as part of a five-year, $1 million commitment. -- Guests included a veritable "who's who" of Delaware Valley politics. Democratic guests included Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, N.J. Gov. Jon Corzine, U.S. Sen. Robert Casey and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley. Republican guests included former Pa. Gov. Tom Ridge, former N.J. Gov. Christine Whitman, former N.J. Gov. Tom Kean and Renee Amoore, deputy chair of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania.

-- CN8 D.C. Bureau Chief Robert Traynham and Special Contributor Larry Kane conducted 23 interviews on location from Denver and St. Paul and did talkbacks or crosstalk 24 times. Host/Political Director Lynn Doyle interviewed 48 guests in studio.

-- Video ON DEMAND generated nearly 10,000 orders, with availability continuing until Sept. 19. Speeches by the candidates themselves from both parties drew the highest order rates.

-- More than 50 speeches were carried in some form -- live, taped or in progress.

-- Exclusive interviews and Vlogs by Kane and Traynham were posted regularly to the award-winning Web site at http://www.cn8.tv/.

Although coverage of the two conventions is now complete, CN8's "America's Next President," a year-long series of political programming will continue. Extensive coverage will be announced for the weeks leading to the election, as well as for the Nov. 4 election day and the January 2009 inauguration.

TI simplifies complex signal generation with wide bandwidth digital-to-analog converter and amplifier development toolKit extends TI's world-class support for high-speed analog designs

DALLAS, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) introduced today a leading-edge support tool that enables designers to rapidly evaluate signal chain performance for test and measurement, industrial and communications applications, including arbitrary waveform and signal generators. The development kit simplifies the complexity of interfacing between high-speed digital-to-analog converters (DAC) and amplifiers and includes clocking and power management devices to further ease design and reduce cycle time. In addition, the tool provides customers with the flexibility to implement alternative design configurations based on the unique requirements of the system, all configurable via an easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI). (For more information, see http://www.ti.com/tsw3070-pr)

The TSW3070 development kit includes a high-speed DAC, two amplifiers, a complete on-board clocking solution and power supply circuitry, including the following:

-- DAC5682Z dual-channel, 1-GSPS DAC with current sink output -- OPA695 current feedback amplifier with 1.4-GHz bandwidth -- THS3091/5 high voltage swing amplifier with 30-V supply voltage -- CDCM7005 jitter cleaner with 800-MHz VCXO and 10-MHz reference -- TPS7675x, TPS5430, UCC284-5 on board voltage supply solution from a single 6-V wall supply

In addition, the kit also features a user-friendly GUI for easy DAC configuration.

The TSW3070 provides designers with the flexibility to implement multiple configuration options. The DAC5682Z converter with LVDS interface offers many digital features which can be configured using the GUI such as:

-- Selectable low-, high-, or bypass filter modes -- Interpolation: 2x, 4x or bypass -- Optional +/-Fs/4 or +/-Fs/8 coarse mixer -- 8 sample input data FIFO

Designers can drive the DAC output to either the OPA695 or the THS3091/5, enabling customers to evaluate a high-frequency signal to support wide bandwidth or a large signal swing. The amplifiers also simplify the signal chain requirement for level-shifting, gain and differential to single-ended conversion while taking into consideration the DAC compliance voltage and output current specification. As an additional option, designers can bypass the amplifiers and send the signal to a passive transformer output without gain.

TI offers a host of other market-leading solutions-based tools to address customer design challenges, reduce prototyping costs and speed development time. For instance, customers can utilize the LVDS outputs from TI's TSW3100 digital pattern generator to drive the LVDS bus into the TSW3070's DAC5682Z input interface with up to 256 mega vector pattern depths. For more information, see http://www.ti.com/tsw3100.

    Availability and pricing

The TSW3070 demonstration kit is available today at http://www.ti.com/tsw3070. Pricing is $499.

Methode Development Company Introduces Conductive Ink With Low Electrical Resistance

CHICAGO, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Methode Development Company, a business unit of Methode Electronics, Inc., announces a new conductive ink formulated for thermal inkjet systems. Methode's new water-based ink is called product #9101 and is highly conductive when printed with a resolution of 600 dots per inch (DPI).

The printability and conductivity of the ink will be on display at the NIP24/Digital Fabrication 2008 Conference in Pittsburgh, PA from Monday, September 8 until Thursday, September 11, 2008 in the Conference Gallery. Specific applications will also be discussed during the session titled Evaluation of Conductive Inks for Anti-Counterfeiting.

The conductive properties are well-suited for the growing printed electronics market. Security printing, RFID, signage, displays, backplane, photovoltaics and security markets require the efficient and cost effective manufacturing alternative of thermal inkjet printing.

The thermal inkjet formulation contains conductive silver nano-particles, and does not require secondary curing or additional processing. Near full conductivity is achieved within a few minutes of printing. The ink is RoHS-compliant and negligible volatile organic compounds (VOC's) are created during printing, alleviating the need for specialized ventilation during application.

When printed on glossy photo-grade paper, it has a uniform, metallic-gold appearance that is demanded by converters for decorative applications.

IWON(R) Puts the Fun in Fundraising: IWON.com Team Challenge Promotes Casual Gaming for Good Causes Winning Player Teams Earn $10,000 Each for Their Charity of ChoiceIt's Win/Win at IWON as Gamers Team Up to Win $$$ for National Charities or Their Favorite Local Causes -- from After School Programs to Zoos -- and Still Keep Their Individual 'Coins' on Account

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Online gamers stoked with the spirit of casual competition can vie for victory for causes greater than bragging rights as IWON ( http://www.iwon.com/ ) rolled out its first ever Team Challenge on September 2, 2008. IWON members need only to select a national or local charity of their choice, form a team in support of their cause (or join an existing team in support of that cause) and then let their natural competitive instincts and superior skill sets prevail. Every month, the local and national charity whose teams win the greatest number of "coins" -- IWON's form of currency -- will be awarded $10,000 each.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080623/NYM024LOGO )

IWON provides a list of 500 National non-profit organizations and charities for members to choose from, or they can opt to play for a recognized local cause of virtually any description, from animal shelters and volunteer ambulance corps to literacy and recreational programs. What's more, while individual team members' winnings accrue to the benefit of their team, the individual also gets to keep their earned coins as if they were simply playing for themselves. As an added incentive, IWON Team Challenge participants automatically compete for the honor of earning their teams' MVP badge, awarded to the member who wins the greatest number of coins during the contest cycle.

"This is a win/win situation for gamers, charities and for IWON, and we are encouraging participants to recruit friends, family and fellow gamers to their team and charities to get their supporters to start or join a team and compete on their behalf," explained Tim Allen, vice president of product management at IAC Consumer Applications and Portals.

"Gamers get to play and keep their coins as always while supporting a cause important to them; winning charity teams get $10,000 each to further their good works, and IWON gets to demonstrate why we are the leading casual games portal to new populations of competitors."

    Competition Starts Fresh Each Month

For those competed-for-causes whose team falls short of winning the $10,000 prize, there's always next month. Each month the Team Challenge competition's coin counter resets to zero and everyone starts anew in the quest for the next pair of $10,000 prizes.

PARIS, September 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced it has been placed in the leaders quadrant of the recently published Gartner "Magic Quadrant for Corporate Telephony". For the first time, the report evaluates corporate telephony vendors from a global rather than regional perspective.

The Gartner report recognizes that the market is evolving "from one of proprietary hardware to one of standards-based software" that provides companies the opportunity to "use IP telephony to deliver business benefits across the organization, while consolidating technologies around a common technology or solution provider, or selection of providers and their partners."

Alcatel-Lucent telephony solutions are based on open-standards and provide a range of solutions for voice and video conferencing, collaboration, unified messaging, unified communications, wireless communications, and applications for small to medium businesses and large enterprises. As a global company, Alcatel-Lucent provides businesses with consistent national and regional deployments of global solutions and the option of single supplier installations that transparently interconnect disparate locations.

According to the Gartner report, "Market leaders demonstrate strength and can affect market trends in all the criteria on which they are evaluated. Leaders tend to have broad geographical coverage across the globe or particular strengths in one or more key global markets."

Alcatel-Lucent is helping its customers to become increasingly dynamic enterprises by providing communications solutions that strengthen relationships, simplify interaction, and improve performance. State of the art networks, streamlined processes, real-time collaboration and improved access to information help turn every interaction into a business opportunity.

Verizon Wireless Rolls Out Evolutionary Store Design in South Portland, MaineNew Gorham Road Location Provides Enhanced Hands-On Experience for Customers

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless is breaking new ground in the U.S. wireless retail experience today with the introduction of its evolutionary store design in South Portland, Maine. The 6,000 square foot store, located at 365 Gorham Road, offers consumers a high- tech and hands-on experience with wireless voice, data, music and video services.

The store design -- incorporated in new Verizon Wireless stores around the country in 2008 -- features a bright new design and integrates a number of innovative systems and operational enhancements designed to streamline the sales process and enhance the customer experience, including:

-- Notebook computers demonstrating BroadbandAccess, the company's high- speed wireless Internet service geared toward mobile professionals, business customers, and on-the-go college students.

-- More than 55 working models of handsets, PC cards and other devices for customers to try.

-- A greeter kiosk that allows customers to check in once they enter the store and list their wireless needs, so representatives can quickly assist them.

-- A Bill Payment Kiosk that allows customers to make account payments quickly and easily using checks, cash or credit/debit cards.

-- Customer Service and Technical Support personnel, making it easy for customers to get account information, customer service and address technical issues from trained in-store staff.

"The South Portland evolution store provides increased customer service and shopping convenience to area residents," said Verizon Wireless District Manager Steve Klaiber. "Increasing demand for Verizon Wireless' products, such as wireless broadband Internet, is driving our network and store expansions across New England."

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $45 billion since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services like BroadbandAccess and V CAST. Regionally the company has invested over $2.2 billion into its New England network, including over $100 million during the first six months of 2008. As a result of these investments, every Verizon Wireless cell site in New England provides wireless broadband connectivity.

"We've always believed that even the most advanced cell phone is only as good as the network it runs on," said director for Network Systems Performance for Verizon Wireless, Richard Enright. "We continue to aggressively invest into our wireless networks across New England to increase coverage and capacity for our customers."

The new Verizon Wireless Communications Store 365 Gorham Road in South Portland, Maine is open Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and can be reached at (207) 773-1033.

The new store design has been introduced in more than 100 new locations around the country, including Augusta, Maine and Boston, Massachusetts. The new design will be introduced in additional locations -- either new or existing -- throughout the rest of 2008.

Strong demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the second quarter of 2008 as the company added 1.5 million net new customers and, for the fifteenth consecutive quarter, reported the lowest customer turnover (highest customer loyalty) rate in the wireless industry.
