IAC Consumer Applications & Portals Debuts Zwinky CutiesA FUN VIRTUAL WORLD FOR GIRLS AGES SIX AND UPNew Online Universe Expands Popular Zwinky Brand to Pre-Teens

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- There's a new arrival in the Zwinky family, and it's here by popular demand. Zwinky Cuties (http://www.zwinkycuties.com/) is an extension of the enormously popular Zwinky brand, whose 16-million registered users make it one of the largest teen virtual worlds. Zwinky Cuties welcomes and encourages pre-teen girls (ages six and up) to safely explore their individuality and creativity. Girls can create their own avatar and persona, shop for virtual clothes and furniture, adopt online pets and play games.

"Zwinky Cuties came about as we found ourselves turning thousands of children under the age of 13 away from the original Zwinky site each day because of their age," explained John Park, president and CEO of IAC Consumer Applications and Portals. "These kids were looking at the fun their older friends or siblings were having in the Zwinky world and naturally wanted to participate. With Zwinky Cuties we've given them more than a room of their own to play in, we're providing an entire virtual world to explore and customize."

Zwinky Cuties entertains, inspires and also helps to develop and share safe and imaginative relationships between a child, her interactive avatar and her peers, through their online avatars. In the Zwinky Cuties world, girls are free to harness their creativity by customizing the avatar's appearance, clothes and accessories as they develop their own individual style. They can also play themed games like "Pizza Pitch" (a variation of "Connect Four") and Ducky Duck, and of course, make friends with other girls having fun in the Zwinky Cuties world.

Access to the basic features of the Zwinky Cuties world is free and offers girls their choice of an avatar right down to the hairstyle, a handful of outfits, a room to call her own, and the ability to adopt a pet goldfish to care for and liven up the room decor. The basic Zwinky Cuties membership also allows access to many of the site's various locales, from the shopping mall and multiplex theater to the park and roller rink.

The Zwinky Cuties Jet Setters membership is subscription based, with nominally priced memberships offered of one month at $5.95, six-months at $29.95 and one-year at $56.95*. Charter members are entitled to a special offer - buy the first month at $5.95 and receive two months free. Zwinky Cuties Jet Setters benefits afford young users opportunities to use their virtual currency to purchase additional Zwinky Cuties accoutrements. These include clothes and accessories based on the latest fashions for their avatars and a large selection of furnishings for their virtual room. Jet Setters can also choose from a wider selection of adoptable animals, including puppies, kittens, bunnies - even monkeys, penguins and polar bears. Coming soon, the Jet Setters membership will offer the added attraction of a virtual passport with access to travel to such exciting in-world locales as London, Paris, Rome, Hong Kong and Dubai. By joining Zwinky Cuties Jet Setters, members will receive a "passport." With each city visit, a member's passport gets "stamped", allowing friends to compare travel activity.

Park added, "We believe a Zwinky Cuties Jet Setters membership will be an affordable and appreciated 'must have' gift for girls."

At each step of membership in Zwinky Cuties - whether at the complimentary basic level or the Zwinky Cuties Jet Setters subscription level - parents are contacted, consulted and asked to give their permission for their child to be a part of the Zwinky Cuties world.

ZwinkyCuties.com is a COPPA-compliant website and online world, and interaction between girls is strictly controlled through pre-selected chat responses, making Zwinky Cuties a safe and enjoyable virtual world for the six-and-up age group and the parents that care for them.

IAC CAP launched the Zwinky brand two years ago as a teen virtual world for girls 13 and older that is focused on fashion, entertainment and music. Since that time, Zwinky.com has evolved from a personalized avatar to one of the largest teen virtual world in the world, with more than 16 million registered users globally and six million unique visitors per month.

iFinix updates shareholders on Company's Position

GARDEN CITY, N.Y., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- iFinix Corp. (Pink Sheets: INIX) a provider of real-time financial information and services to active traders and to the securities industry, is pleased to update its shareholder base.

During a comprehensive meeting of the Board of Directors, which took place this past weekend, the Board of iFinix thoroughly reviewed all aspects of the Company's business, and has determined that the Company and its shareholders would be best served by channeling all its resources to develop the potential of the Company's commodities, futures and foreign currency exchange platforms.

The Board's decision was based on the fact that the Commodities/ Futures market trades over 2 trillion dollars daily in volume versus 2 billion dollars on the New York Stock exchange. It is the Board's belief that due to recent developments in the equities market, investors will be looking for alternative investments other than equities. The Board believes that in the future the public will seek out investments in "solid assets" rather than "theoretical assets.

iFinix recently acquired ProActive Futures, where it has already introduced new procedures that are expected to greatly enhance ProActive's profitability derived from the currently existing revenue base. Additionally, the Company is nearing an agreement with a formidable trading group to launch a Manhattan based location. When completed, the revenues and profits of ProActive should increase dramatically.

The Board also decided that since ProActive Futures has a three year history of operations it would be beneficial to maintain the "brand name". However, the website will be redesigned to indicate that ProActive Futures is a division of iFinix.

In line with the new direction the Company is taking, the Board intends to move aggressively to complete the acquisition of the on line equities trading firm that iFinix has recently been in negotiations with. ProActive is also pursuing a joint venture with an established Forex trading firm to expand their reach into that market place.

To help expedite the execution of this plan, the Company is forming an advisory committee comprised of individuals with a diversity of talents and experience in building successful businesses within the financial services industry. This will allow the Board of Directors to have an extensive knowledge base to draw from in order to assist them in properly steering the company.

Douglas Spadaro, Chairman of iFinix, added the following, "As a result of the Board's deliberation, it was decided to temporarily withdraw iFinix Realtime from the market, and return it to the developers for a complete revision and upgrading. After certain enhancements are completed, this will allow us to reintroduce Realtime to our subscribers as a more viable and cutting edge product."

There were many more initiatives mandated by the Board of Directors, which we will apprise our shareholders of in the next few days.

Dell Premiers First Industry-Approved Burn-to-DVD Downloads- Qflix Recording Technology from Sonic Gives New Life to Digital Downloading- Featuring New Hit and Catalog Releases via CinemaNow- Qflix Certified Media Plays on Standard DVD Players

ROUND ROCK, Texas, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Dell is bringing the big screen to the PC screen, making it easy for users to build a personal digital library of their favorite Hollywood blockbusters.

Dell and Sonic Solutions(R) have teamed to make downloading and recording DVD movies easy with the first PC-based Qflix(TM) drives. Using an intuitive application, Roxio(R) Venue, movie collectors can search and select from a variety of major Hollywood hits available from CinemaNow, download them on their PC, transfer them to multiple digital devices in their home, and then create a permanent and portable DVD-format copy on Qflix DVD media.

The Qflix drive bundle is available in the U.S. today as an option on most Inspiron, Studio and XPS laptops for $120, as well as through Dell's Entertainment, Software and Accessories online store, and will be available soon as option on select consumer desktops. The bundle includes an external Qflix-enabled drive, which also supports standard DVD read/write functions, two recordable Qflix DVD discs, Roxio Venue and CinemaNow software and a USB cable.

"We look forward to bringing this innovative digital download technology to our customers," said Michelle Pearcy, director, Dell's global software marketing. "People are accessing and managing more and more digital content with their PCs, but often they are limited by where and when they can view their content. With Qflix, movie fans can now burn their movies and TV shows to DVDs that can be played on most standard DVD player, greatly enhancing the flexibility of their digital downloads."

"The burnable-in-the-home DVD is well-timed given the growing interest from both consumers and studios in digital distribution," said Tom Adams, president, Adams Media Research. "Two of the key things holding consumers back in their willingness to purchase movies electronically are worries about long-term ownership and portability of the downloaded file. Providing the security of a DVD back-up and the assurance that the file will play on the majority of standard DVD players -- set-top, desk-top or portable -- is a key step forward."

"The Qflix Platform is bringing the $35 billion DVD sell-through market into the age of electronic distribution," said Mark Ely, executive vice president of Strategy, Sonic Solutions. "We're extremely pleased to be working with Dell, Hollywood, and the media and drive suppliers to usher in the age of DVD-on-Demand."

CinemaNow will continue to expand its Qflix-ready movie selections. Qflix DVD media that allows the Hollywood approved burning of premium content to DVD can be found at http://www.qflix.com/getitnow.

Dow Jones Insight-2008 Presidential Election Media Pulse: Palin Drives McCain's Lead in Media Coverage; Democrats Receive Higher Convention Coverage

NEW YORK, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Results from the Dow Jones Insight-2008 Presidential Election Media Pulse (http://dowjonesinsight.blogspot.com/) show that Sarah Palin continues to hold the lead in overall media coverage of the four nominees for president and vice president -- clearly giving a boost to Republican running mate John McCain, whose recent coverage has matched or exceeded that of rival Barack Obama after trailing the Democratic candidate for most of the year.

While Palin had virtually zero coverage in the days prior to her August 29th unveiling as the Republican vice presidential nominee, in the period from August 30 through September 13 her coverage surpassed that of presidential nominee Obama, and left vice presidential rival Joe Biden far behind, according to analysis of mainstream and social media sources tracked by Dow Jones Insight (http://solutions.dowjones.com/insight/4064/).

When considering coverage of the two presidential candidates only, McCain had 179,004 total mentions in all tracked media sources during the same time period, or a 55% share, to Obama's 148,000 mentions, or 45% share. McCain also led in terms of headline mentions in the mainstream press, with 21,995 mentions, or 54%, to Obama's 18,769, or 46%, while in social media sources (blogs and boards) Obama had 33,120 headline mentions to McCain's 32,900, for a 50-50 split.

Palin May Have Stolen the Show in Minnesota, but Obama Still Pulled in Higher Convention Coverage

The timing of the Palin announcement could be viewed as a clear effort to steal Obama's thunder, but it couldn't quite offset his coverage during the Democratic convention itself. While the spotlight has shifted toward the Republicans over the past few weeks, when comparing mainstream and social media coverage of both candidates around the time of their respective conventions, Obama still came out ahead.

Dow Jones Insight (http://solutions.dowjones.com/insight/4064/) tracked coverage of the candidates on the four scheduled days of each convention, plus the preview day before and the wrap-up day afterward -- or August 24-29 for the Democrats and August 31-September 5 for the Republicans -- and found that the Democratic convention time period saw 91,395 total mentions of both candidates, 14% more coverage than the 80,250 total mentions in the days surrounding the Republican convention. Since the Republican convention was shortened by a day due to Hurricane Gustav, the higher overall total for the Democratic convention is understandable. However when comparing each candidate's percentage of total mentions, Obama had a more dominant share of the conversation during his convention than McCain had during his.

-- Obama had 54,624 mentions, or a 60% share, during the Democratic convention time period tracked, compared to McCain's 36,771 mentions, or 40%, in the same timeframe.

-- In the days tracked surrounding the Republican convention, McCain received 45,448 mentions, for a 57% share, compared to Obama's 34,802 mentions, or 43%

-- When combining mentions from both time periods, Obama received 52% of the total to McCain's 48%

With Barack Obama's announcement this week that he had raised a record $66 million in August and lined up more than 500,000 first-time donors, he is by far the leader in donations from the public, and also leads the way in terms of media coverage on the topic. According to analysis of mainstream and social media sources tracked by Dow Jones Insight (http://solutions.dowjones.com/insight/4064/), there were 1,740 mentions of Obama's name in close proximity to fundraising-related terms in the previous seven days, or 36% of the total 4,826 fundraising mentions of the four candidates over that period. His running mate, Joe Biden, who has not played a very public fundraising role, netted just 279 mentions, or 6%.

While Obama declined to take public funds to finance his campaign, McCain, who has accepted public financing and is therefore limited in how much he can raise and how he can spend it, is expected to spend far less time drumming up donations. In the previous week McCain drew 1,665 mentions in reference to fundraising, or 35% of all fundraising mentions of the four candidates. Meanwhile, Palin received 1,142 mentions on the issue, or 24%, as she took on a major fundraising role for the McCain campaign.

Higher Overall Coverage for McCain Translates to Ownership of Additional Issues

In the period August 15 - September 15, media coverage of the campaign issues being tracked by Dow Jones Insight (http://solutions.dowjones.com/insight/4064/) surged again, with a trend in issues ownership toward McCain reflecting the overall increase in McCain- related coverage. McCain had the lead in 17 of the 25 issues being tracked, up from six in a previous analysis. Among the issues he led were the economy, taxes, terrorism, health care and abortion (each with a split of 54% for McCain to 46% for Obama), as well as energy (59% to 41%) and the environment (56% to 44%). Obama owned just five issues, down from seven in a previous analysis, including faith, race, Israel, gun control and NAFTA. Total issues- based coverage was up 22% during this period, reaching 1,137,582 mentions of all 25 issues compared with 934,408 from the previous analysis.

Eutelsat Congratulates Winners of IBC Special Award for World-First Demo of Next-Generation HDTV in Super Hi-VisionDemonstration Delivered to NHK Theatre in Amsterdam Using Satellite Capacity Provided by Eutelsat

PARIS and AMSTERDAM, September 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The NHK, BBC, RAI and EBU were distinguished with a Special Award at this year's IBC (International Broadcasting Convention) for live demonstrations of next-generation HDTV in Super Hi-Vision. Super Hi-Vision has opened a window into the next stage of HDTV, with an image resolution of 7680 pixels on 4320 lines and an immersive 22.2 channel surround sound system.

The impressive series of demonstrations of Super Hi-Vision was conducted throughout the IBC show in Amsterdam using capacity provided by Eutelsat on the ATLANTIC BIRD(TM) 3 satellite.

This world-first live international satellite link enabled live and pre-recorded content generated by a Super Hi-Vision server operated by RAI in Turin to be played into each demonstration at IBC from September 12 to 16. Using 16 encoders in parallel, a native digital signal of 24Gbps was compressed in MPEG-4/H.264 to around 140 Mpbs, and delivered over two full DVB-S2 transponders on ATLANTIC BIRD(TM) 3. The demonstration confirmed that satellite is a mature and ready technology for a challenging new-generation transmission.

With 60 progressive frames a second, the picture resolution of Super Hi-Vision is 16 times current HD signals, which already represent a significant step forward in audio and video experience for television viewers. The audio of Super Hi-Vision is 22.2 channels: nine channels at ceiling height, ten at the centre height of the screen, three front channels and low frequency effect channels at the front. The theatre set-up by NHK at IBC contained a 6.95 metre diagonal projection screen and full audio system.

Current research into Super Hi-Vision is enabling its primary partners NHK, RAI, BBC and the EBU to assess this new technology as well as future applications, which in the first phase could include out-of-home viewing and theatre screenings, followed by consumer broadcasting.

Broadcom Demonstrates Networking and Storage Convergence in VMware Virtualized Environments at VMworld 2008(R)Broadcom Delivers Network Controllers that Support the Convergence of Networking and Storage with VMware's Server Virtualization

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- VMworld 2008 -- Broadcom Corporation , a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that it is the first to demonstrate 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) iSCSI host bus adapter (HBA) functionality, along with converged networking and storage functionality, within VMware virtualized server environments. These capabilities will be demonstrated at this week's VMworld 2008 exhibition on Broadcom(R) NetXtreme II(R) converged network interface controllers (C-NICs) that address the challenging and dynamic input/output (I/O) requirements of a virtualized server by offering networking and storage convergence, as well as real-time flexibility in I/O processing, in a low power, low cost solution.

Besides the newly added iSCSI HBA functionality to its C-NICs, Broadcom is working with VMware to provide support for VMware virtualization including advanced networking features such as NetQueue and VMDirectPath.

Networked storage is crucial in virtual server environments as it provides for a smooth migration and failover of a guest operating system (GOS) from one physical server to another. iSCSI has emerged as a high-performance, easy-to-manage networked storage technology that is popular in many virtualization deployments. As server and enterprise application customers strive to achieve density and compute-resource utilization objectives for their servers and enterprise applications, Broadcom's NetXtreme II iSCSI HBA functionality, with support for VMware virtualization, provides the converged functionality needed in a virtualized server environment by offering complete on-chip processing solutions that free up CPU resources, and increase bandwidth and performance.

"Broadcom is working with VMware to provide support for VMware virtualization such as iSCSI HBA functionality, as well as VMDirectPath and NetQueue for networking, on our NetXtreme II C-NIC products," said Vinod Lakhani, Senior Director & General Manager of Broadcom's High-Speed Controller line of business. "Today's demonstration of iSCSI HBA functionality and convergence on a VMware ESX hypervisor marks a significant performance milestone for I/O processing on virtualized servers."

"Advancements in VMware virtualization technology coupled with the increasing processing capability of hardware platforms are driving higher server consolidation ratios in data centers. To complement this trend, Broadcom's innovation in high bandwidth I/O subsytems and network fabric convergence can add value for our customers by pushing the current boundaries of performance and functionality," said Brian Byun, Vice President of Global Partners and Solutions at VMware. "VMware is pleased to work with Broadcom in the areas of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, network convergence, and hardware offloads, and the VMDirectPath iSCSI performance shows the exciting results of one of our joint efforts that leverages VMware NetQueue and VMDirectPath I/O technologies."

    Demonstration Highlights

Broadcom's VMworld 2008 demonstration addresses the needs of enterprise server users who intend to deploy the VMware platform. The demonstration illustrates the convergence of networking and storage at 10GbE speeds featuring iSCSI HBA functionality with support for VMDirectPath and NetQueue technologies.

Broadcom iSCSI HBA functionality enables on-chip processing of the iSCSI protocol (as well as TCP and IP protocols), which frees up host CPU resources at 10 Gigabit per second (Gbps) line rates over a single Ethernet port while running on VMware ESX. This functionality provides extended performance benefits that meet the demands of bandwidth intensive applications requiring high performance block storage I/O for the hypervisor, servicing all instances of the GOS. In addition, Broadcom's 1GbE C-NIC delivers improved performance also running on VMware ESX. Regardless of network speed, Broadcom iSCSI HBA delivers performance benefits not obtainable from alternative solution approaches.

Enterprise networks are well positioned to take advantage of iSCSI functionality since it is built on top of the highly familiar TCP/IP protocols and because of the ubiquity and effectiveness of Ethernet, which allows storage content to be accessed from an Ethernet fabric. The increase from 1 Gbps Ethernet to 10 Gbps Ethernet delivers increased storage performance levels not previously achievable and provides sufficient bandwidth that permits multiple types of high bandwidth protocol traffic to co-exist on the same network. As a result, a server converges networking and storage onto the same network while lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO), or uses a dedicated network for data and for storage, thereby using the same equipment for multiple purposes.

VMDirectPath in a VMware environment enables NetXtreme II controllers to be dedicated to a GOS, allowing the on-chip processing support in the C-NIC to be exposed and function within the GOS. By functioning within the GOS, Broadcom's C-NICs provide better throughput for the GOS, as well as better use of CPU resources since the hypervisor no longer needs to process each network I/O request. In addition, VMDirectPath support allows the user to benefit from on-chip TCP processing in a GOS, which allows server customers to realize improved networking performance.

NetQueue in a VMware environment enables NetXtreme II controllers to provide extended performance benefits that meet the demands of bandwidth intensive applications requiring high performance and higher networking throughput in a virtual environment.

    NetXtreme II C-NIC Information

Broadcom's NetXtreme II Ethernet controller chips were the first controllers in the industry to enable storage networking, high performance clustering, accelerated data networking and remote system management pass-through functions in a single, all-in-one solution at price points enabling broad adoption of this technology. By deploying these functions over standard Ethernet networks, IT professionals can significantly reduce the costs associated with deploying and maintaining today's complex fabric infrastructure.

Bellingham, Massachusetts Residents to Benefit from Verizon Wireless Network ExpansionInvesting to Stay Ahead of Growing Demand for Wireless Voice, Multimedia and Internet Access

BELLINGHAM, Mass., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents in Norfolk County, Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site. The new site increases high-speed wireless data coverage and capacity along Routes 140 and 126 in Bellingham, Massachusetts, as well as the surrounding area.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $45 billion since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services like BroadbandAccess and V CAST. Regionally the company has invested over $2.2 billion into its New England network, including over $100 million during the first six months of 2008. As a result of these investments, every Verizon Wireless cell site in New England provides wireless broadband connectivity.

"We've always believed that even the most advanced cell phone is only as good as the network it runs on," said director for Network Systems Performance for Verizon Wireless, Richard Enright. "We continue to aggressively invest into our wireless networks across New England to increase coverage and capacity for our customers."

BroadbandAccess offers computer users the nation's most reliable high-speed wireless mobile broadband network, operating at average upload speeds between 500 and 800 kbps, and download speeds between 600 kbps and 1.4 mbps over Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess with EV-DO Revision A network. V CAST brings video clips of TV shows, music on demand and other multimedia services to wireless phones.

Strong demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the second quarter of 2008 as the company added 1.5 million net new customers and, for the fifteenth consecutive quarter, reported the lowest customer turnover (highest customer loyalty) rate in the wireless industry.

The company's 'nation's most reliable wireless network' reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country who inspired the "can you hear me now" national advertising campaign. Nationally, these test men and women drive nearly 100 specially equipped vehicles almost 1,000,000 miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts, to confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than three million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

    About Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless operates the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, serving 68.7 million customers. Headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J., with 70,000 employees nationwide, Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone (NYSE and LSE: VOD). Microsoft Closes Acquisition of DATAllegroCompany announces plans to bring DATAllegro's enterprise-class data warehousing capabilities to customers, partners in less than 24 months.

REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Microsoft Corp. continues to rapidly expand the capabilities of its data platform and is already revealing product road map details following the acquisition of DATAllegro Inc., a provider of large-volume, high-performance data warehouse appliances. As part of its focus on helping organizations manage and access even the largest quantities of data, Microsoft will offer a new solution based on DATAllegro's technology that extends Microsoft SQL Server to scale into hundreds of terabytes of data. The company will begin giving customers and partners early access to the combined solution through community technology previews (CTPs) within the next 12 months, with full product availability scheduled for the first half of calendar year 2010.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

"Microsoft recently launched SQL Server 2008, which is already attracting a great deal of attention thanks to all of the new functionality for mission-critical data management and business intelligence -- in fact, it's been downloaded more than 500,000 times," said Ted Kummert, corporate vice president of the Data and Storage Platform Division at Microsoft. "These capabilities, combined with DATAllegro's ability to scale to hundreds of terabytes, present an extremely powerful solution set for customers and partners, and we are committed to getting it in their hands as soon as possible."

"SQL Server has already brought so much value to our organization, whether it's giving us more insight into our data, reducing demands on our hardware or simply speeding up the performance of our applications," said Ron Van Zanten, directing officer of Business Intelligence, Premier Bankcard Inc. "Perhaps more important, it's delivered all of these benefits without requiring changes to our existing infrastructure. DATAllegro's technology is a natural complement to SQL Server, so we are excited about the possibilities this acquisition will bring."

Already a recognized leader in data warehousing and business intelligence (BI), SQL Server 2008 is the only solution in the industry that includes comprehensive, tightly integrated functionality for data management and advanced BI out of the box. Microsoft is positioned in the Leaders quadrant in Gartner Inc.'s Magic Quadrant for the Business Intelligence Platforms(1) and the Magic Quadrant for Data Warehouse Database Management Systems(2) and in the Visionaries quadrant in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for CPM Suites, 2007.(3) Together, we believe that these placements validate the importance of Microsoft's overall BI vision -- to provide all individuals, teams and entire organizations with BI solutions that drive bottom-line performance and operational excellence. By extending SQL Server with DATAllegro's technology, Microsoft will now be able to offer customers and partners one of the highest scales of data warehousing.

Information and knowledge management (I&KM) professionals turn to appliances not just to accelerate time-to-value on short-fuse DW deployments, wrote James Kobielus, senior analyst at Forrester Research Inc., but also to deliver an order-of-magnitude greater performance on OLAP and BI transactions at a fraction of the cost of traditional solutions. (4)

DATAllegro's data warehouse appliance installations boast some of the largest data-volume capacities in the industry -- up to hundreds of terabytes on a single system.

With the close of the acquisition, Microsoft is retaining most of DATAllegro's team as well as its headquarters in Aliso Viejo, Calif., making it a Center of Excellence for data warehousing. Existing DATAllegro customers will continue to be supported. The majority of DATAllegro's key executives, including its chief executive officer, Stuart Frost, will remain with Microsoft.

Customers and partners should attend the second annual Microsoft Business Intelligence Conference, October 6-8 in Seattle. This is one of the best places to get the latest business strategy, product information, Microsoft team interaction, implementation best practices and deep customer insights into Microsoft BI products.

PlateSpin Forge Protects the Data Center with Improved Workload Integrity and Flexible Storage OptionsLatest PlateSpin Forge release reduces downtime with cost-effective hardware-based disaster recovery solution

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- (VMworld 2008) -- PlateSpin ULC, a Novell(R) company, today announced the availability of PlateSpin Forge(TM) version 2.0, an innovative hardware-based disaster recovery appliance that uses embedded VMware virtualization to protect most x86 server workloads. The only product on the market to provide immediate failover and hardware-independent failback, PlateSpin Forge allows customers to rapidly recover their server workloads in the event of downtime or a site disaster. Additionally, this latest release integrates with existing SAN infrastructures to enable customers to leverage their high-volume storage investments to protect the growing number and size of workloads in today's data centers. PlateSpin Forge now also provides multiple recovery points to increase the flexibility of how lost workloads are recovered and offers efficient workload migration over a WAN to a remote recovery location to reduce downtime in the event of site disaster.

"It is clear that customers are looking beyond server consolidation to find new ways to leverage virtualization in their enterprise," said John Humphreys, program vice president at IDC. "As business continuity and disaster recovery become key areas of focus for customers making purchasing decisions around virtualization, they are looking to virtualization management players like PlateSpin who are extending virtualization's benefits to the next level with innovative solutions for managing and protecting the data center."

With the ability to rapidly recover a workload and failback to the same or different hardware, PlateSpin Forge reduces downtime and helps customers get back up and running quickly. Designed to protect between 10 and 25 workloads, PlateSpin Forge ships with all storage, management software and VMware virtualization pre-packaged, dramatically reducing implementation time and effort. The newest version also includes support for 64-bit Windows* workloads, giving customers the ability to protect their Windows workloads for both greater operating efficiency and return on their existing investments in the data center. For larger enterprise implementations, PlateSpin Forge also includes a central management console to streamline the management of multiple PlateSpin Forge appliances.

"With embedded VMware virtualization at the core of the PlateSpin Forge recovery appliance, organizations of all sizes can benefit from a simplified disaster recovery solution for protecting physical and virtual workloads in the data center," said Parag Patel, vice president, alliances at VMware. "We are excited to see PlateSpin bring innovative new products to market that help customers build the always-on virtual datacenter, thereby enhancing and extending the value proposition of using best-in-class VMware virtualization technology."

The latest PlateSpin Forge release offers a range of appliance models to help customers better match their recovery investment with the size and configuration of their data center and the number of workloads they need to protect. Customers have the flexibility to purchase a 10 workload recovery appliance and then purchase additional protection to a maximum of 25 workloads. Organizations can also choose appliance models with local storage or opt to leverage existing SAN storage for the recovery environment.

"Customers large and small are increasingly leveraging SAN infrastructures for flexible and scalable high volume storage," said Stephen Pollack, vice president of Business Strategy for Novell Systems and Resource Management. "As a result, customers are also looking for solutions that help them to cost-effectively protect their systems across the SAN. With an intelligent management console for managing workload protection and SAN-to-SAN replication, PlateSpin Forge allows enterprises to tap into virtualization to protect all workloads running across their organization."
