Score a Touchdown for Public Safety and Security at IACPFederal Signal's total solutions help police to prepare communities for what's next
SAN DIEGO, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- IACP 2008 -- Now more than ever, the well-being of communities and citizens everywhere depends on enhanced public safety and security. As a result, law enforcement leaders turn to Federal Signal for technology-enhanced systems to protect people, property and the environment -- every day.
Play it forward with advanced technology
At the 115th International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) annual conference and exhibition in San Diego, Calif., Federal Signal will unveil a suite of total solutions that help police protect and serve communities and citizens around the world. Federal Signal (Booth #1837) also will demonstrate how the company's technologies give officers the offensive edge they need to serve and protect communities and citizens like never before. Federal Signal's total solutions for law enforcement leaders include:
-- The Federal Signal BOSS(R) 3.0 automated license plate recognition (ALPR) back office software by PIPS enables efficient management of multiple mobile and fixed camera deployments, users and hotlists. BOSS 3.0 scales to support larger public safety deployments and regional agency data sharing and enhances intelligence and investigations by enabling multi-jurisdictional ALPR networks.
-- Federal Signal's The Edge(TM) low-profile automated license plate recognition (ALPR) camera by PIPS propels edge processing to the next level. The radically lower profile camera does not hinder performance of today's low profile lightbars, and also lowers cost of ownership by about 20 percent. An onboard platefinder analytic tool pushes processing to the edge to minimize the burden on the ALPR processor.
-- The new Federal Signal ILS interior lightbar system, is a super sleek lightbar designed for slick top and undercover law enforcement applications with all the functionality of a roof-mounted lightbar, including ultra-bright takedowns.
-- Place high-output LED lighting just about anywhere on a police vehicle with the new Federal Signal IMPAXX(TM) and Federal Signal ViperEXT(TM) interior/exterior warning lights.
-- The Federal Signal Legend(TM) LED lightbar now offers the patented HotFoot(TM) feature to project powerful bright white LED alley and takedown light for additional warning protection and flexibility in lightbar configuration.
-- The Federal Signal Sliver(TM) portable ALPR system packages PIPS' proven performance and effectiveness for extreme portability. This new system can be deployed in minutes for use in unmarked vehicles, for rapid deployment in special events, or where a dedicated vehicle is not available.
-- The Federal Signal SmartMSG critical communications system provides alerting, notification and interoperability for first responders. Reliable, redundant, and secure communications from any device to any device is a snap
with the SmartMSG system -- now enhanced with a real-time XML interface to enable services.
-- The Federal Signal VelocityCAM(TM) in-car data and video system changes the face of digital in-car video for police. This powerful integrated system significantly lowers the cost of in-car video and offers a rich feature set unlike any other system on the market. The Virtual DVR feature eliminates the need for a trunk mounted separate DVR processor or other storage medium.

TV Choice and Competition Near for Residents of Three More New York CommunitiesMunicipalities in Mid-Hudson Region and on Long Island Approve Video Franchises for Verizon
NEW YORK, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Residents of three more New York communities are a major step closer to having a real choice for their cable television service, thanks to newly approved agreements authorizing Verizon to offer its FiOS TV service, delivered over the most advanced fiber-optic network straight to customers' homes.
The village of Port Washington North in Nassau County, and the Town of Fishkill and the City of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County all recently granted video franchises to Verizon, paving the way for video choice in these communities.
The latest approvals bring to 141 the total number of New York municipalities that have authorized Verizon to provide FiOS TV service.
"This is great news for residents of these three communities, who now will have a new choice for their video entertainment," said Andres Irlando, Verizon senior vice president for the New York region.
"Consumers in Port Washington North, Fishkill and Poughkeepsie will be able to choose their cable provider as easily as they choose their phone company. Competition like this drives innovation and value and puts the consumer in control, and we will compete aggressively for customers in these areas," he said.
As with all local franchise approvals in New York, the agreements between Verizon and the three communities are subject to review by the New York State Public Service Commission.
Verizon's FiOS TV is a formidable competitor to cable and satellite, offering a broad collection of all-digital programming, up to 100 high-definition (HD) channels in the New York market and access to more than 11,000 video-on-demand (VOD) titles, 8,500 of which are free. The VOD library also includes an increasing number of HD titles.
Verizon's fiber network delivers amazingly sharp pictures and sound, and has the capacity to transmit a wide array of high-definition programming that is so clear and intense it seems to leap from the TV screen. In addition to FiOS TV, Verizon's fiber network also delivers Internet download speeds of up to 50 Mbps (megabits per second) and upload speeds of up to 20 Mbps, as well as high-quality voice service.*

globalCOAL and ICE Futures Europe Announce Official Launch Date of gC ICE Newcastle Futures - 5th December 2008 -
ATLANTA, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- globalCOAL(R) and ICE Futures Europe(R) are delighted to confirm that the gC ICE Newcastle Futures contract will be introduced on the ICE platform on the 5th December 2008.
With the transition of ICE Futures Europe's open interest to ICE Clear Europe(TM) successfully accomplished, this definitive schedule will ensure that all systems are bedded in and will enable a smooth launch for the much anticipated Newcastle coal Futures contract.
globalCOAL Chief Executive Officer Eoghan Cunningham is upbeat about the prospects of gC ICE Coal Futures: "We've seen unprecedented volatility in the coal markets, and the credit crisis has taken its toll on the depth of credit available to market participants. These critical conditions have resulted in significant pent-up demand for a cleared coal price risk management product such as the gC ICE NEWC Futures contract. We expect a strong start right from launch."
ICE Futures Europe President David Peniket said, "The addition of the NEWC Futures contract will play a key role in complementing ICE's existing Rotterdam and Richard's Bay contracts and result in an unequalled global seaborne coal offering for market participants. In light of the rising popularity of ICE Futures Europe's coal contracts in recent months, reaching a record 34Mt traded in October, we see a bright future for exchange-listed coal derivatives."
globalCOAL and ICE Futures Europe are also planning the launch of a physically-settled coal Futures contract for delivery of thermal coal to the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region. This contract is currently being developed and is expected to be introduced on the ICE in 2009.
About gC ICE NEWC Futures
The globalCOAL ICE Newcastle Futures contract will financially settle on the globalCOAL NEWC Index(TM) -- the leading price benchmark for seaborne thermal coal in the Asia-Pacific region. The contract will be traded directly on the ICE platform, as well as through the contingent Exchange of Futures for Swaps (contingent EFS), Exchange of Futures for Physical (EFP) and Block Trade mechanisms. One lot will equal 1,000 tonnes of coal, and the contract will be traded in clips of 5 lots.
About globalCOAL(R)
globalCOAL was founded by leading members of the world coal industry to promote screen trading of standardised coal products. The company has developed the world's leading electronic marketplace for thermal coal, as well as a range of standardised coal quality specifications, a Standard Coal Trading Agreement (SCoTA(R)), and robust methodology for coal price index calculation. globalCOAL will be launching two new coal Futures contracts in cooperation with leading energy exchange ICE Futures Europe. STMicroelectronics Embeds Smart Features Into Three-Axis Accelerometers with Digital OutputA new sensor family offers complete scalability through pin-to-pin, motion and software compatibility
GENEVA, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- STMicroelectronics , a leader in MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical System) technology and devices, today introduced a new family of high-performance three-axis linear accelerometers with digital output. The tiny 3x3x1mm sensors boast resolution scalability, smart embedded features and reduced power consumption, addressing the exploding demand for miniaturized motion-sensing solutions in the consumer and industrial markets.
The new ST's MEMS accelerometers target a wide range of low-g applications including motion user interfaces or pedometer in mobile phones, gaming devices, remote controllers or portable media players as well as free-fall detection for data-integrity protection in hard-disk drives and vibration monitoring,
All three devices -- LIS331DLH, LIS331DLM and LIS331DLF -- integrate a host of smart embedded features, including low-power mode, auto wake-up function, free fall motion and 6D-orientation detection as well as a standard SPI/I2C digital interface.
The new three-part sensor family ensures complete resolution scalability. Based on the needs of a specific application, customers can select a 6-, 8- or 12-bit device, all pin-to-pin, motion and software compatible, so they can be re-used across different projects without the need to change the board and sensor software drivers.
The 6D recognition signals if the accelerometer is up or down along all three axes (x,y,z). This information can be used, for example, to automatically mute a phone when it is upside down, and in many other applications.
Contributing to the reduction in power consumption of the entire system, the new accelerometers can be programmed to work in the sleep-to-wake mode, which means the device keeps the read chain active, consuming less than 10uA, and automatically waking up when an event occur.
A configurable high-pass filter can be turned on to enable motion-activated functions and vibration monitoring regardless of whether the end product is tilted or placed upside down at the moment of measurement.
Two separate, highly programmable interrupt signals enable immediate notification of free fall, motion or 6D events, giving manufacturers more freedom and flexibility in their design and applications.
ST's new accelerometers deliver high performance at low power consumption and their ultra-compact robust design provides very high immunity to vibration and shock survivability up to 10,000g. Built-in self-test capability allows the customer to verify the functioning of the sensor after it has been assembled on board.
Samples of ST's LIS331DLH, LIS331DLM and LIS331DLF are available now, with volume production starting from early 2009. Unit pricing is around $1.5 for 100,000 pieces per year.
For further information on ST's complete MEMS portfolio see http://www.st.com/mems.

Holden, Massachusetts Residents to Benefit from Verizon Wireless Network ExpansionInvesting to Stay Ahead of Growing Demand for Wireless Voice, Multimedia and Internet Access
HOLDEN, Mass., Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents in Worcester County, Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site. The new site increases wireless data coverage and capacity along Route 31 in northern Holden, Massachusetts, as well as the surrounding area.
Verizon Wireless has invested more than $48 billion since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services like BroadbandAccess and V CAST. Regionally the company has invested over $2.2 billion into its New England network, including over $100 million during the first six months of 2008. As the wireless carrier with America's largest 3G network, every Verizon Wireless cell site in New England provides wireless broadband connectivity.
"We've always believed that even the most advanced cell phone is only as good as the network it runs on," said director for Network Systems Performance for Verizon Wireless, Richard Enright. "We continue to aggressively invest into our wireless networks across New England to increase coverage and capacity for our customers."
BroadbandAccess offers computer users the nation's most reliable high-speed wireless mobile broadband network, operating at average upload speeds between 500 and 800 kbps, and download speeds between 600 kbps and 1.4 mbps over Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess with EV-DO Revision A network. V CAST brings video clips of TV shows, music on demand and other multimedia services to wireless phones.
The company's 'nation's most reliable wireless network' reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country who inspired the "can you hear me now" national advertising campaign. Nationally, these test men and women drive more than 90 specially equipped vehicles almost 1,000,000 miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts, to confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than three million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.
About Verizon Wireless
Verizon Wireless operates the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, serving 70.8 million customers.
