ITS America, IBM, Spencer Trask, & Partners Launch Congestion Challenge for Traffic SolutionsBest Ideas Sought to Solve Congestion and Improve Mobility, the Environment and Public Safety

WASHINGTON, June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America), in partnership with IBM and Spencer Trask Collaborative Innovations (STCI), today announced a new global challenge to identify innovative ideas for combating transportation congestion. Additional partners include AAA, the American Highway Users Alliance, the Environmental Defense Fund, ITS Sweden, and the California and Virginia Departments of Transportation. The announcement was made during the ITS America Annual Meeting & Exposition.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090416/IBMLOGO )

The ITS Congestion Challenge is the first global competition to identify the best ideas to reduce congestion and mitigate its impact on the economy and environment. The competition is open to entrepreneurs, commuters, transportation experts, researchers in all fields, universities, and citizens around the world. All ideas will be reviewed, discussed and rated by an open global community. The best ideas to solve the problem of traffic congestion will be selected and the winner will be announced during the 16th World Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems in Stockholm, Sweden, September 21 - 25, 2009. The winner will receive a cash investment of $50,000 USD in addition to development and implementation support so that the winning idea becomes a real-world solution.

"The average metropolitan commuter in the U.S. spends nearly a full work week stuck in traffic each year. This wastes precious time and fuel and impacts the environment, road safety, quality of life, and economic productivity at a cost of more than 1% of GDP," said ITS America President and CEO Scott Belcher. "We cannot allow congestion to grind cities, suburbs and supply chains to a halt every morning and afternoon when we have innovative tools, technologies, and strategies available to manage our transportation systems and utilize our infrastructure more effectively."

"Rapidly increasing urbanization and expanding population density is creating unique, and in some cases very serious, transportation challenges throughout the world," said Gerry Mooney, IBM General Manager, Global Government and Education. "The intent of the ITS congestion challenge is to generate new ideas to reduce congestion. This will lead to smarter transportation solutions."

Winning ideas are expected to incorporate some of the following attributes:

Speed & Efficiency - enhance transportation system efficiency, use technology to reduce delays and transport people and goods more reliably.

Behavioral Impact - provide travel alternatives and choices to reduce congestion.

Safety - prevent accidents, improve incident response and provide more timely and accurate transportation information.

Sustainability - lower energy use and emissions, actively manage traffic and reduce congestion.

Economic Competitiveness - wireless applications, mobility tools and other cost, efficiency and productivity improvements.

"The platform we will be using for this challenge harnesses a powerful collaborative ecosystem incorporating proven innovation practices that have been shown to find unique solutions for today's pressing problems," notes Michael J. Turillo Jr, Vice Chairman of STCI.

For additional information on the challenge and to enter submissions, interested participants should visit http://www.itsa.org/challenge. Participants will be able to post solutions, collaborate in an open community to improve entries and vote for the best ideas to reduce congestion and mitigate its impact. Winners will be announced during the 16th World Congress of ITS in Stockholm in September 2009.

ST. PAUL, Minn., June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Image Sensing Systems, Inc. , world leading developer of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) computer-enabled detection and traffic control technology, announced today that it has surpassed the 100,000 mark for computer enabled detection instances sold. Autoscope video and RTMS radar solutions have been deployed in more than 60 countries, providing transportation managers with the ability to manage their traffic systems more effectively based on real-time traffic data as they extend the life and enhance the value of public transportation infrastructure.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050512/CGISSLOGO)

Ken Aubrey, CEO, stated, "We would like to acknowledge and recognize our global customer base, since passing this mark was only possible with their efforts. More 3G Wireless Coverage for Dulzura, California ResidentsNew Verizon Wireless cell site also adds capacity to stay ahead of demand for calls, email and text

IRVINE, Calif., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- San Diego County residents, businesses and visitors are enjoying improved service thanks to a new Verizon Wireless cell site. The site expands 3G wireless coverage in Dulzura, along Highway 94 from Dulzura to Barrett Junction. The increase in network coverage and capacity means more calls, emails, text and picture messages for locals, plus expanded wireless access to the web.

Verizon Wireless invested over $600 million in California during 2008 to enhance service and coverage. Nationally, the company has invested more than $48 billion in its network since it was formed in 2000. The result is the nation's largest, most reliable 3G network that powers services such as Mobile Broadband and email.

Businesses of any size can tap into the power of Mobile Broadband. The service allows users to connect to the Internet wirelessly while on the go to download music over-the-air, and access e-mail or corporate data. For example, customers can download a small 1 megabyte PowerPoint(R) presentation in about eight seconds and upload the same-sized file in less than 13 seconds.

Small business owners interested in Mobile Broadband, and other wireless solutions, can visit http://smallbusiness.vzw.com/ where they will find:

-- An online forum to share experiences and connect with other business owners -- Access to Small Business Specialists in each Verizon Wireless store -- Discounts and promotions to help businesses stretch their budgets -- Summaries of mobile solutions like email, wireless Internet and Push to Talk service -- 24/7 tech support

Verizon Wireless tests its network and those of its competitors. The company determines if voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Nationally, Verizon Wireless' real-life test men and women drive 91 specially equipped vehicles almost 1,000,000 miles annually. They drive on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and streets in high-population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than three million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

    About Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless operates the nation's most reliable and largest wireless voice and data network, serving more than 80 million customers. Headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J., with more than 85,000 employees nationwide, Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone (NYSE and LSE: VOD). Verizon Wireless Continues Adirondacks Area Network Expansion ProgramAt least 15 new sites to be turned on in 2009

ALBANY, N.Y., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- With the summer vacation season officially underway, Verizon Wireless announced today it plans to activate at least 10 new cell sites in the Adirondacks Region in 2009. This will bring the company's total number of cell sites in the region to more than 90, including 26 currently operating within the Adirondack Park itself. The company is also moving forward with its efforts to bring coverage to the Northway corridor. To date, Verizon Wireless has activated four of its planned 13 new sites to bring service to the previously uncovered stretch of Interstate 87.

"Today's announcement reflects Verizon Wireless' commitment to providing its customers with the most reliable wireless service -- at home, at work, and on vacation," said Marquett Smith, president of Verizon Wireless' Upstate New York Region. "We've taken the lead on expanding wireless service throughout the Adirondacks Region -- both inside the Adirondack Park and outside. We believe wireless service is essential to the people who live in the region, the first responders who protect them, and the businesses that drive that region's economy."

The new sites, as well as all of the company's existing cell sites in Upstate New York, will not only give customers access to reliable voice service, but also to MobileBroadband, the company's high-speed wireless Internet service.

Verizon Wireless has activated 14 new sites in the North Country in the last 18 months. The new sites planned for 2009 will be in locations throughout the region. At an average cost of $550,000 per site, this represents a more than $5 million investment in the region this year.

This network enhancement is part of the company's aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless' voice and data services. The company has invested more than $50 billion since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. This year, the company plans to invest more than $100 million in its Upstate New York network, bringing its total network investment in the region to more than $1 billion since 2001.

Strong demand for Verizon Wireless' services continued during the first quarter of 2009 as the company added 1.3 million net new customers. Verizon Wireless, the wireless company with the highest customer loyalty, reported the lowest customer turnover (highest customer loyalty) rate in the industry -- 1.47 percent in the first quarter -- for the 18th consecutive quarter.

The company's "nation's most reliable wireless network" reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country. These engineers drive nearly 100 specially equipped vehicles more than 1 million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and surface streets. Test vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3 million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

LAPLATA, Md., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The future of television has arrived in Charles County as Verizon introduces FiOS TV to about 8,000 homes and businesses via the company's revolutionary all-fiber-optic network.

A unanimous vote on May 20 by the Charles County Commission authorized Verizon to offer its fiber-optic-powered FiOS TV.

"We commend the commission and its staff for their dedication and hard work throughout this process," said William R. Roberts, Verizon's regional president for Maryland and Washington, D.C. "Clearly, they recognize and support the technological advantage and competitive benefits -- as well as the distinctive edge in economic development and quality of life -- that fiber will bring to their community."

In Maryland, Verizon's FiOS TV and FiOS Internet services are available to dozens of communities in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's counties, including Aberdeen, Annapolis, Bel Air, LaPlata and Rockville.

Verizon delivers FiOS TV over the nation's largest digital, all-fiber network, which has earned certification from the independent Fiber to the Home Council for providing fiber all the way to customers' homes and businesses.

FiOS TV scored highest in J.D. Power's "2008 Residential Television Service Satisfaction Study for the East Region." And a leading consumer magazine gave FiOS TV the top rating in its most recent survey of television service, with top marks in all six categories it measured: channel choice, image quality, sound quality, reliability, value and support.

"Cable just can't match the high-definition channels or the innovative features and enhancements FiOS TV customers enjoy," said Roberts. "We've harnessed the vast capacity of our advanced fiber-optic network to deliver a revolutionary, new entertainment experience."

Currently, FiOS TV is available to 9.7 million homes in 14 states: California, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

This spring, Verizon is offering consumers the ultimate home upgrade by making it easy and affordable to switch from old-fashioned cable to the power of Verizon's advanced all-fiber-optic network and FiOS services.

Packages of FiOS Internet, FiOS TV and Verizon Freedom unlimited local and long-distance calling services are available starting at under $100 a month. New customers who order a FiOS service bundle by June 20 can get an even sweeter deal with a current promotion that offers up to $150 back in the form of a prepaid card, a two-year price guarantee, and premium installation at no extra cost by a specially trained technician who sets up a powerful home network from start to finish. FiOS Internet Highlights

Verizon's 50/20 Mbps (megabits per second) FiOS Internet connection is the fastest available to Charles County consumers and the company's 20/20 Mbps symmetrical service is the first of its kind commercially available to U.S. consumers on a mass scale.* Pioneering a new category of broadband for the American consumer, Verizon's symmetrical FiOS provides the ultra-fast, two-way speeds crucial for such burgeoning online activities as video conferencing, social networking and super-fast uploading of electronic photo albums or home videos, as well as multi-player gaming and online work collaboration.

For the second year in a row, Verizon's FiOS Internet service was named the top pick in PC Magazine's 2008 readers' survey and also was named a winner in PC World Magazine's The 100 Best Products of 2008 -- the second year in a row the broadband service made that list.

At 50 Mbps, downloading a 5 GB (gigabyte) file, such as 112-minute, high-definition movie purchased online, takes approximately 13.3 minutes, while a 50 MB (megabyte), or 60-minute, Web video takes 8 seconds, and a 5 MB MP3 music file takes less than eight-tenths of a second.

Using a 20 Mbps upstream broadband connection, a consumer could upload a 250 MB file of 200 photos in about 90 seconds, instead of the roughly 47 minutes it takes over a 768 kilobit-per-second (Kbps) upstream connection. A 3 GB file, such as a one-hour family video shot with a high-definition video camera, could be uploaded in around 20 minutes, compared with more than nine hours with 768 Kbps (kilobits per second) upstream.

    * NOTE: actual (throughput) speeds will vary.

Everybody's Phone Company Issues Corporate Profile

HOUSTON, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Everybody's Phone Company, Inc. (Pink Sheets: EVPH), Texas' fastest growing provider of prepaid telephone services, today announced that a corporate profile, highlighting its current operations, target markets, competitive strengths and growth strategies, is now available at http://www.everybodysphonecompany.com/.

Everybody's Phone Company is a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier that leases telephone lines from local incumbent telephone providers and resells the service to connect residents to enable incoming and outbound calls, 911 access and receipt of collect calls, among other features like Call Waiting, Call Forwarding and Caller ID for a nominal fee. The Company's primary target market is credit-disadvantaged consumers and those who have been routinely denied connection to the regional telephone companies for various reasons. Everybody's Phone Company offers its service on a prepaid basis, therefore no deposit requirements, credit checks, ID, or social security questions are ever needed. To sign up, consumers simply have to provide a name and address.

"EVPH's prepaid services provide immediate peace of mind for credit-strapped consumers, legions of unemployed people and displaced homeowners in need of immediately reducing expenses. During tough economic times, consumers still need access to lifelines, like telephones, consumers simply can't live without one," said President and CEO of Everybody's Phone Company, Steve Bethke. "Everybody's Phone Company has timed the market perfectly to offer a solution for prepaid telecommunications services that are affordable, flexible and accessible to every income group, regardless of his/her past history."

Everybody's Phone Company is currently focused on building critical mass in Houston's residential and market. The Company's goal is to replicate its business model throughout the large State of Texas and then nationwide. The Company's distribution channels include retailers; apartment owners and other membership groups that can sell EVPH's prepaid telephone services to their customers. "We anticipate hundreds of new subscribers will sign on for our service given the convenience of a local grocery, for instance, and the ability to pay-as-you-go. We believe our distribution model is a great way to create residual income that directly drops to the bottom line for these establishments," said Bethke. The Company is also using traditional marketing channels and soon an e-commerce campaign to get the word out.

More than 10 million people have unlimited-calling prepaid plans, and First Analysis Securities believes the potential market is 45 million to 60 million people. To help accelerate future expansion and capitalize on rising demand, Everybody's Telephone Company has executed a reseller agreement with at&t to sell prepaid telephone service in 22 states. For additional details on the Company, you may visit the corporate profile at http://www.everybodysphonecompany.com/.

Despite Bankruptcy News, Consumer Interest in GM, Chrysler Cars Remains Steady on Cars.com

CHICAGO, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite Chrysler's bankruptcy challenges and a government-imposed deadline for GM to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, consumer interest in Chrysler and GM cars has remained steady over the past year on automotive shopping site Cars.com.

As of April, searches for new and used GM cars on Cars.com(1) were up more than 5 percent year over year, and they've continued that trend throughout May. In addition to search activity, more consumers have contacted dealers through Cars.com to inquire about purchasing a GM car or truck this year than did last year.

Cars.com is seeing similar results for Chrysler models, which saw steady levels of search activity and dealer contact through April. Now, for May, the number of consumers contacting Chrysler dealers has been rising.

"Some of this could be attributed to consumers who are out looking to take advantage of the hefty rebate deals, but we have noticed that the trend has been pretty steady for the past year," said Cars.com Editor in Chief Patrick Olsen. "The possibility of bankruptcy has been in front of consumers for quite some time, and it appears that it hasn't deterred shoppers from considering these cars as they return to the market."

According to a recent Cars.com survey, 59 percent of consumers said the current economy and struggles of the American car manufacturers will have no impact on whether or not their next car purchase will be an American car.

"The fact that consumer interest on Cars.com has remained steady for both of these manufacturers is certainly good news for them," Olsen said, "especially as consumer confidence continues to rebound and these manufacturers begin to restructure their debt and position themselves to be more competitive in the future."

    About Cars.com

-- Diodes, Inc. is up nearly 230% from where McWilliams called it a buy on December 1st. Could Diodes still move up to the low- to mid-$20s from here?

-- IXYS is up over 30% from McWilliams' December 1st call to buy. Would McWilliams continue adding shares or is he suggesting that investors hedge or trim positions?

-- ON Semi is up nearly 135% from McWilliams' December 1st call to buy. Is new positive data poised to propel ON Semi even higher?

-- International Rectifier is up nearly 24% from where McWilliams called it a buy on December 1st. Does the company's balance sheet provide enough protection to merit continuing to hold the investment?

-- Last January, when the consensus for Cree earnings for fiscal 2009 was $0.41, McWilliams advised readers the consensus was at least 50% too low. Cree confirmed McWilliams call last week by advising investors it expects to report earnings as high as $0.65 this fiscal year. Dow Jones Economic Sentiment Indicator Rises Slightly in MayIncrease Extends Modest Improvement Trend to Three Consecutive Months, Signaling Worst of Recession May Be Past But Continued Improvement Not Certain

NEW YORK, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dow Jones Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) continued a trend of modest improvement in May rising to 29, up from 27.6 in April.

While the ESI is up nearly seven points from its all-time low of 22.2 in November of last year, the figure for May is still significantly lower than one year ago, indicating that the U.S. economy has not yet worked through the current recession. Introduced in April 2009, the ESI has been back-tested to 1990, allowing a detailed retrospective look at the indicator's propensity for anticipating changes in the U.S. economy.

"The ESI has tended to reflect more caution about the economy than other leading indicators," Dow Jones Newswires "Money Talks" columnist Alen Mattich said. "The May increase leads me to believe that while the economy may have bottomed out, we still have a way to go before we can comfortably say we're moving out of this deep recession."

The Dow Jones Economic Sentiment Indicator aims to predict the health of the U.S. economy by analyzing the coverage of 15 major daily newspapers in the U.S. It uses a numerical scale from 0 to 100 to express the balance of sentiment in articles about the economy. The ESI represents one of the most comprehensive and far-reaching examinations of media coverage as an economic indicator. The ESI's back-testing to 1990 shows that the ESI clearly highlighted the risk that the U.S. economy was sliding into recession in 2001 and 2008 and suggests the indicator can help predict economic turning points as much as seven months in advance of other indicators.

Unlike some other indicators where 50 is a clear break-point between recession and recovery, the ESI needs to be read with reference to longer trends. Based on the ESI's performance since 1990, previous recoveries have been marked by substantial month-to-month gains, with a jump of three points seeming to be a sign of significant improvement. A drop below 50 marks the point at which there is a clear risk of a slowdown.

The Dow Jones Economic Sentiment Indicator is calculated using a proprietary algorithm through Dow Jones Insight, a media tracking and analysis tool. More information about the Economic Sentiment Indicator and its development is available at http://solutions.dowjones.com/esi .

Dow Jones Insight uses innovative text mining and analytic technologies to help organizations keep informed about relevant issues, news, conversations and trends emerging in mainstream, Web and social media. African Wildlife Foundation selects Serenic to handle multi-currencies and languages across global sitesTSX Venture Exchange Symbol "SER"

EDMONTON, June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Serenic Corporation (TSX-V:SER), ("Serenic" or the "Corporation"), a leading publisher of financial management and business operations software for nonprofits, international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the public sector, and Capital Business Solutions, a Serenic partner and provider of financial management and development software and services, announced today that Serenic Navigator has been selected by the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), the leading international conservation organization focused solely on Africa.

AWF is a nonprofit organization founded in 1961 to help newly independent African nations and people conserve their own wildlife. AWF has helped to ensure the continued existence of some of Africa's most rare and treasured species by training and educating conservation professionals and developing conservation enterprises to improve peoples' livelihoods while also conserving wildlife.

With headquarters in Washington, D.C., and 80 percent of its staff in Africa, AWF requires sophisticated tracking of program budgets and grant funding in multiple languages and currencies. It was looking for a "paperless solution" and had outgrown the capabilities of its existing SunSystems financial management system. AWF chose Serenic Navigator after considering Blackbaud, Deltec Information Systems, Great Plains and Solomon Software.

"Serenic was able to automate at a much higher level than any other system we considered," said AWF's Chief Financial Officer Jeff Chrisfield. "We operate with a thin staff, and manual data analysis had become too time-consuming and distracting for us. Further, Serenic was the only system able to provide a unified and synchronized database across the many developing countries in which we operate. We expect to recoup our investment in Serenic within 12 to 18 months by freeing up two full time finance employees, as well as significantly improving internal budget accountability through the provision of superior financial reporting."

Serenic's replicator tool will be a big benefit, according to Chrisfield, helping AWF to communicate across its nine offices in Africa, where it needs to synchronize data sets and where connectivity problems often create issues.

A total of 18 AWF users will access Serenic Navigator - certified for Microsoft Dynamics NAV - and AwardVision, Serenic's grant management product, with unlimited users accessing Serenic Portal Services features via the Web. The fully integrated Serenic Navigator product suite includes advanced budgeting capabilities, which will allow the organization to combine financials, procurement and grant management.

"Serenic Navigator has the capability to help nonprofit organizations better handle multiple languages and currencies," said Serenic CEO and President Randy Keith. "For global nonprofits like AWF, Serenic Navigator eliminates operating inefficiencies imposed by separate, disconnected systems, and provides users all over the world with real-time, reliable information access."

"Verizon Wireless' 3G network coverage across New England is unparalleled," said director for Network System Performance for Verizon Wireless, Richard Enright. "We've invested billions of dollars into New England believing that even the most sophisticated cell phone is only as good as the network it runs on. As the carrier with America's largest and most reliable wireless network, Verizon Wireless cell sites in New England provide 3G wireless data connectivity.

    Mobile Broadband Internet Access

Verizon Wireless' 3G high-speed wireless broadband network keeps customers connected. A one megabyte email attachment -- the equivalent of a small PowerPoint(R) presentation or a large PDF file -- can be downloaded in about eight seconds and uploaded in less than 13 seconds.

    V CAST: Video and Music

Powered by the company's 3G high-speed network, V CAST multimedia services offer customers the ability to download full song tracks, play cutting-edge 3D games and stream video clips straight to their phones. V CAST Music with Rhapsody delivers unlimited access to music on up to three Rhapsody-compatible mobile phones and players, and online on multiple PCs and Web browsers. With V CAST Music with Rhapsody, customers who purchase music over-the-air can download the master copy of the songs or albums to their PCs free of digital rights management (DRM) software that restricts how and where music can be played.

    Most Reliable Wireless Network

The company's 'America's most reliable wireless network' reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country. By traversing more than one million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas -- the equivalent of two roundtrips to the moon or 40 trips around the world -- the test men and women confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than three million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

AT&T Study: Eight in 10 Southern California Businesses Ready for Mudslides, Fires, and Other DisastersIT Execs Continue to Invest in Backup Systems and New Technologies, But Many Concerned About Increasing Use of Social Networking Capabilities

LOS ANGELES, ORANGE COUNTY and SAN DIEGO, June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With California's wildfire season just underway, a study announced today by AT&T* reveals that eight in 10 businesses throughout Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego have business continuity plans in place. When AT&T last surveyed Los Angeles in 2007, only two-thirds (64 percent) of the companies surveyed had business continuity plans - today's announcement of the 2009 survey results show that business continuity has become more of a top priority in southern California. For the 2009 survey, 100 information technology (IT) executives were surveyed.

In the land of wildfires, earthquakes and mudslides - all of which have wreaked havoc and proven to be lessons learned for area companies - one-fourth (25 percent) of executives indicate that their company has invoked its business continuity plan citing power outage at facilities (13 percent), fire (10 percent) and IT failure (9 percent). According to the AT&T study, more than half (52 percent) of these companies have had their business continuity plans fully tested in the past 12 months.

Companies whose IT operations have been impacted by natural or man-made disasters said the biggest lesson learned was the need to plan ahead and have the backup systems in place. Despite decreasing IT budgets, six our of ten (59 percent) of executives responded that their companies are investing in new technologies this year, including software upgrades (13 percent), new computers and phones (11 percent) and new servers (11 percent). The survey also found that one-third (30 percent) of the companies require their suppliers and other vendors to have business continuity plans in place as well.

"Southern California businesses have learned to not only plan ahead and have backup systems in place in the event of a natural or man-made disaster, but also to test these plans regularly to reflect changes in their business," said Robert Pitts, sales vice president, AT&T Business Solutions. "These survey results continue to show that southern California-area businesses are prepared to maintain key processes and recover operations."

According to the study, the majority (72 percent) of southern California executives indicate their companies have prioritized and set target recovery times for each of their key business processes, and three-fourths (75 percent) of the executives surveyed said that their companies have systems in place that enable most employees to work from home or remote locations. More than half (54 percent) also have automated calling systems to reach employees by telephone or cell phone outside of work.

Despite improvements to business continuity planning among Southern California businesses, the majority (72 percent) of executives surveyed are concerned about the increasing use of social networking capabilities and its impact on security threats and slightly more (77 percent) are concerned about the increasing use of mobile networks and devices and their impact on security threats. While executives have these concerns, very few view social networking sites or mobile networks as the biggest security risks.

    Study Methodology

The 2009 AT&T Business Continuity Study results are based on an online survey of 100 IT executives in the Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego metropolitan areas. The study was conducted by e-Rewards Market Research with companies having total revenues of more than $25 million in the California designated market area. Interviews were conducted Feb. 9-14, 2009.
