Test Vendors Say They're Ready for LTE, Report FindsLTE technology in next-gen mobile networks has caused test vendors to prepare for a demand in LTE test functionality, says Unstrung Insider

NEW YORK, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- With next-gen mobile networks based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology set to begin rolling out over the next year, suppliers of testing products and applications are gearing up for a quick ramp-up in demand for a full range of LTE test functionality, according to the latest report from Unstrung Insider (http://www.unstrung.com/insider), a paid research service from Unstrung (http://www.unstrung.com/) and TechWeb's Light Reading (http://www.lightreading.com/).

LTE Tests for the Future examines applications in the emerging LTE testing market, including a comparative analysis of solutions. The report analyzes the types of test suites on offer and how those products will be applied to maximize LTE service levels, shorten development cycles, accelerate time to market, and optimize network operation and performance. It also examines how LTE testing vendors help their users achieve operational savings. Further, the report examines challenges the LTE testing market faces, trends in the industry, and how the economy is affecting the industry. Finally, it provides a competitive analysis of seven top suppliers of LTE testing products.

For a list of companies analyzed in this report, please see: http://img.lightreading.com/uni/pdf/uni0609_companies.pdf

One of the largest challenges for LTE technology developers and service providers is meeting the market's sizable expectations, says Denise Culver, research analyst with Unstrung Insider and author of the report. "With some estimates placing LTE data rates at 100 Mbit/s downlink and 50 Mbit/s uplink, testing vendors must be able to meet the challenges of QoS, QoE, network coverage, and performance demanded by network operators," she notes.

Key findings of LTE Tests for the Future include: -- Carriers will use LTE to build out existing networks and upgrade old legacy equipment, rather than ripping and replacing. -- Femtocells are seen as one of the hottest trends expected in the LTE space for the next 12 to 18 months. -- Though the economy is not halting LTE production, most testing vendors believe there will be a slowdown in how quickly operators will deploy the technology. -- Although standards for LTE are not fully set, suppliers are offering pre-standard versions of LTE test suites. -- No one supplier has a dominant position this early in the LTE testing market.

LTE Tests for the Future is available as part of an annual single-user subscription (12 monthly issues) to Unstrung Insider, priced at $1,595. Individual reports are available for $900 (single-user license).

    TerreStar Updates Launch Timetable

RESTON, Va., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- TerreStar Networks Inc. (TerreStar), a majority owned subsidiary of TerreStar Corporation (TSTR), today announced that the launch of TerreStar-1 has been rescheduled for a July 7-12, 2009 window to permit additional time to ensure that an on-orbit anomaly that occurred recently on another operator's satellite has no bearing on the flight worthiness of TerreStar-1.

"While our vendors have assured us that TerreStar-1 is ready to launch, we believe this short delay may provide a window for additional data to verify that TerreStar-1, including its 18 meter reflector, is unaffected by the anomaly reported by another operator's S Band satellite," Dennis Matheson, CTO of TerreStar said.

Arianespace, TerreStar-1's launch services provider, has agreed to this updated launch schedule.

"Throughout the construction of TerreStar-1 we have emphasized quality and certainty over speed. Today's revised launch schedule is another example of our commitment to eliminate unnecessary risks when we can," said Jeffrey Epstein, President of TerreStar.

Final authorization of the updated launch date is subject to FCC approval of a new launch milestone. No change to the August 30 FCC/Industry Canada operational milestone is necessary.

An updated countdown clock and pictures of TerreStar-1 as it is prepared for launch, are available at http://www.terrestar.com/.

Upstate New York Areas Benefit Through Verizon's Network Investments for RegionOver Recent Two-Year Period More Than $886 Million in Network Investment in Upstate Expands Service Choices and Technologies$2.7 Billion Investment Over Two Years for Entire StateCompany's Advanced Telecommunications Infrastructure Investment Pays Off for Consumers, Employees and State

NEW YORK, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers and businesses in upstate areas of New York are getting more choices for their Internet access and television services as a result of Verizon's multimillion-dollar investment in these areas.

As the company continues to build its all-fiber FiOS network in dozens of towns and villages in the western, central, northeast and mid-Hudson areas, Verizon is also making enhancements to its traditional network in upstate areas of New York to provide faster Internet speeds and greater access to broadband services.

To build and further enhance both its traditional copper telecommunications network and its all-fiber FiOS network, the company has invested a total of some $886 million upstate in 2007 and 2008. Over the same two-year period, company spent about $2.7 billion overall on New York's telecommunications infrastructure statewide. The company expects its spending to be in the same range for upstate and the state overall this year.

"In spite of challenging economic conditions, Verizon remains steadfast in its commitment to upstate New York," said Christopher Creager, president of Verizon's Northeast region. "Our investments and the work of our union-represented employees in upstate mean more services and more choices to consumers and businesses. From reliable voice services, to entry-level High Speed Internet over our copper network, to brilliant high-definition TV on our FiOS TV service, Verizon's spending in these services and technologies helps to keep our customers in upstate New York connected and in touch.

"Verizon's FiOS initiative, on top of a fully deployed fiber backbone network in the state, gives New York an advanced telecommunications network that puts it in the top echelon of states. It also enables widespread economic development, and leads to further job creation in industries benefiting from state-of-the-art broadband technology," Creager said.

This year, the company is on track to provide FiOS TV services -- in addition to currently available FiOS Internet services -- to communities covering a wide swath of central New York. In March, for example, the Town of Clay became the first municipality in that region to award a TV franchise to Verizon, enabling the company to offer FiOS TV service to the town's residents. Work is continuing to build and install the necessary video equipment into local central offices in the region, and Verizon anticipates that FiOS TV service will be turned on for new customers in the town later this year. Television franchise negotiations are underway with several other towns and villages in central New York.

Last year, Verizon began providing FiOS TV services -- in addition to previously available FiOS Internet services -- in 10 Buffalo-area communities, and continues this year to build out its all-fiber network in western New York. By providing competition there, consumers have begun to experience lower prices and greater value for their TV and Internet services.

Through the introduction of FiOS services in the state, Verizon has spurred job creation. For instance, the company opened a Fiber Solutions Center in Syracuse in 2005, starting with about 150 union-represented employees. Last year the center expanded, and now employs about 400. Representatives at the center assist Verizon FiOS customers across the state and other areas, providing answers to questions on ordering, billing, adding services and more. Help-desk technicians provide over-the-phone and "chat" assistance on technical issues and questions from FiOS Internet and TV customers.

In its traditional copper-based network, Verizon has made its 7-megabits-per-second High Speed Internet service available to some 428,000 households in the upstate and midstate areas. Verizon also provides a valuable and reliable triple-play bundle of voice, Internet and television services in these areas and across the state.

"Our investments are paying off for our customers and the state in terms of better service and more choices," said Creager. "As New York's leading telecommunications, Internet and entertainment company, Verizon is driving growth and innovation through investments in its rock-solid networks across the state."

Verizon Submits Recommendations for National Broadband PlanCompany's 10-Point Proposal Focuses on Access, Demand and Adoption

WASHINGTON, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon on Monday (June 8) submitted its suggestions for the national broadband plan called for by Congress and President Obama. The suggestions are contained in a detailed, 10-point proposal filed with the Federal Communications Commission.

"Verizon looks forward to working with policymakers and other stakeholders in developing broadband policies that will ensure broadband availability to all Americans, encourage widespread adoption of broadband services, and empower consumers to make their own choices," Verizon said in its filing.

The FCC is assembling recommendations for Congress to consider for the plan, which is due in February 2010.

"A lively and open ecosystem of innovation and investment has helped to make broadband an integral part of the lives of millions of Americans, providing an ever-expanding array of services, applications and devices to address nearly any conceivable purpose," Verizon said. "Most consumers have choices among ever-more-robust broadband networks that meet their needs at home, at work, and on the go."

To continue that progress, Verizon suggested that, "Policymakers should ensure that any new policies maintain the healthy dynamics of the broadband marketplace that are currently creating and preserving jobs and leading to additional choices for consumers."

"But much work remains to be done for broadband to achieve its full potential in the United States," the company said.

"First, policymakers -- together with industry and other stakeholders -- need to find ways of ensuring that all Americans have access to broadband," Verizon said. "Well over 90 percent" of Americans have access to broadband, and most can choose from at least two wireline, three wireless and two satellite broadband providers. This is a level of facilities-based competition hardly seen in any other country in the world. But gaps in access remain in some hard-to-serve, rural areas.

"Any national broadband plan should have as a top priority filling those gaps," the company said in its filing.

"Second, in many more areas, work remains to be done to address the other factors that prevent too many consumers from adopting broadband services," Verizon said. "Roughly 40 percent of Americans do not adopt broadband when it is available to them."

According to studies, the primary factors include the lack of computers and computer literacy, as well as "the failure to appreciate the potential relevance of broadband" to consumers' lives, Verizon said.

"Third, consumers should be empowered with choices in services, applications and devices that meet their many evolving uses of broadband," Verizon said. "[That] will depend on broadband providers and other providers of Internet services, applications and devices continuing to innovate and invest to spread the reach and capabilities of broadband and to continue the evolution of broadband networks and the services, applications, and devices that use broadband or the public Internet."

Verizon urged the FCC to include the following 10 elements in its recommendations to Congress:

-- A focused effort to encourage broadband demand. -- A consumer-choice framework. -- Encouraging continued innovation to improve cybersecurity for consumers and the nation. -- Pursuing a consumer-focused approach to privacy. -- Facilitating wireless broadband. -- Pursuing a pro-growth regulatory approach. -- Reforming the universal service fund to encourage broadband. -- Encouraging broadband by encouraging IP-based services. -- Effective implementation of stimulus programs. -- Encouraging broadband adoption and deployment through tax reform.

"By following this consumer-focused, pro-growth and pro-innovation framework and taking these steps to encourage broadband deployment and adoption, policymakers would encourage broadband deployment and adoption, and would empower consumers with an increasing array of choices," Verizon told the FCC.

IBM aide l'Arabie Saoudite à améliorer son administration par le biais d'une nouvelle infrastructure technique nationale

    ARMONK, New York, June 8 /PRNewswire/ --

    (Logo : http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090416/IBMLOGO)

Z-Line, a leader in home theater furniture, and Surface, a division of Audiovox Accessories Products, provide important margin and add-on sale opportunities for audio / video dealers and others with home theater product sales. "It is very important that dealers are able to provide a complete offering, and these higher margin categories are usually key to prosperous growth," stated Roper.

Storage Appliance Corp, IOGEAR, Asante, SIIG, Mobile Glove, and Cables to Go particularly enhance the Company's IT offerings. Clickfree from Storage Appliance Corp is an exciting new computer storage product which makes backing up data remarkably fast and simple; IOGEAR offers a large and unique selection of computer, CE and digital signage accessories; Asante is re-launching a high-value brand of Ethernet solutions; SIIG offers a well respected line of connectivity products for the computer and digital signage markets; Mobile Glove is the benchmark for high-quality notebook and netbook bags and cases; and Cables to Go is the leader in computer cabling and electronic connectivity products. CA Clarity PPM Positioned in 'Leaders' Quadrant for Project and Portfolio Management by Leading Analyst Firm

ISLANDIA, N.Y., June 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CA, Inc. today announced that Gartner, Inc. has placed CA in the "Leaders" quadrant of its "Magic Quadrant for IT Project and Portfolio Management" report.* Gartner positioned CA Clarity Project and Portfolio Management (PPM) in the "Leaders" quadrant based on CA's completeness of vision and ability to execute. A leading provider of PPM software, CA's best-in-class CA Clarity PPM solution improves visibility into key initiatives by aiding the prioritization of people, projects and programs through a portfolio view, optimizing resources and driving enterprise efficiency.

According to the Gartner report, "Leaders share many attributes with technology providers we've rated as visionaries and challengers but are differentiated by comparatively high ratings in many areas, not just a few, with overwhelming customer references supporting their claims submitted as evidence. Consistency between a provider's stated strategy and product direction, and its execution--that is, integrity--is important, along with demonstrated vision, enabling the vendor to address emerging and often vaguely defined market requirements."

Over the past year, CA expanded its leadership in the PPM market with the introduction of CA Clarity PPM On Demand Essentials, a low-risk software as a service (SaaS) solution that combines the most common PPM functions with built-in on-demand end-user training and the industry's first 5-day fixed-price implementation program. For clients looking for more advanced PPM capabilities, CA introduced the first PPM on-demand offerings tailored specifically for IT Governance, New Product Development and U.S. Federal compliance and program management. Organizations looking for the best PPM functionality available on demand can now get that from CA, a company with experience, a sizable customer base and a strong financial position, rather than from smaller vendors struggling in today's economy.

The Gartner report cautioned, "Potential PPM customers should consider the potentially negative effects on viability if a [venture capital funded] vendor plans to seek another round in the latter half of 2009 and cannot get it. If the economic situation does not improve before year-end 2009, and venture capital firms continue to tighten their purse strings, some PPM vendors struggling to maintain organic growth may find themselves in dire straits by the first quarter of 2010."

"CA's focus on delivering targeted solutions in the ways our customers want to leverage them speaks, in my opinion, to why we've been positioned by Gartner as a leader in the PPM Magic Quadrant," said Tom Kendra, senior vice president and general manager of the CA Clarity PPM business unit at CA. "With out-of-the-box functionality to drive fast business value and robust dashboarding capabilities to seamlessly report on-going priorities to CIOs and business executives, CA Clarity PPM is the best solution for organizations looking to manage their IT governance processes and key business initiatives."

CA will be demonstrating the latest version of CA Clarity PPM at the Gartner PPM & IT Governance Summit taking place September 14-16 in Orlando, Florida. This event features leading Gartner analysts addressing how project, program and portfolio management improve IT engagement and efficiency.

Citrix Survey Finds Virtualization Top of Mind Among K-12 Education Technology LeadersEighty Percent of Surveyed Technology Pros Cite Interest in Desktop Virtualization

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., June 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- A recent survey conducted by Citrix Systems, Inc. found that K-12 education technology leaders view virtualization solutions as a viable way to deliver applications and resources to students while reducing IT costs. Due to the ever-growing need to do more with less, and with the new funds available because of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, state governments and schools are looking to modern IT infrastructure solutions to get the most out of their resources.

Citrix surveyed K-12 education technology leaders at the March 2009 CoSN Annual Conference to determine attitudes and expectations related to virtualization in the primary education environment. Eighty percent of the respondents cited an interest in desktop virtualization, which indicates that virtualization solutions in the K-12 classroom should see an increase in the months and years ahead.

According to the survey, other top IT challenges include: -- Secure delivery of applications and resources to the right students at the right time (more than 45 percent); -- Easy delivery of semester-, quarter- or course-based instructional applications and resources (more than 43 percent); -- Reduction of IT costs by extending the lifecycle of existing hardware (42 percent); and -- Freeing IT personnel to work on other projects (42 percent).

According to David Podwojski, director of government, education and health for Citrix Systems, survey responses were very consistent in terms of the challenges and solutions that are top-of-mind in K-12 technology.

"The need for IT in the K-12 environment has grown exponentially, while budgets and staffing have remained flat," said Podwojski. "Technology and administration experts are looking to IT - specifically, virtualization solutions - to improve the delivery of education and to help the IT team do more with the resources at hand."

The survey also gave K-12 education technology leaders the opportunity to provide open-ended responses about the top technical benefits or issues they associate with virtualization solutions in the classroom.

"The responses we received make it very clear that the most meaningful technical benefit of virtualization in the K-12 environment is the ability to spend less time on the management and support of software and hardware," explained Podwojski. "And, with stimulus funds reaching the educational system, school districts can implement the virtualization solutions that will deliver these time and cost savings - benefits that will last long after stimulus money has been spent."

Apple Releases Safari 4 - The World's Fastest & Most Innovative Browser

SAN FRANCISCO, June 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today released Safari(R) 4, the world's fastest and most innovative web browser. Available for Mac(R) and Windows PCs and introduced as a beta in February of this year, Safari 4 features the Nitro engine which runs JavaScript up to 4.5 times faster than Safari 3.* Safari 4 makes browsing more intuitive and enjoyable with innovative features, such as Top Sites, Full History Search and Cover Flow(R), and support for modern web standards like HTML 5 and advanced CSS Effects.

"The successful beta release helped us fine tune Safari 4 into an even better, faster version that customers are going to love," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "Safari is enjoyed by 70 million users worldwide and with its blazing fast speed, innovative features and support for modern web standards, it's the best browser on any platform."

Safari 4 is built on the world's most advanced browser technologies including the new Nitro JavaScript engine that executes JavaScript nearly eight times faster than IE 8 and more than four times faster than Firefox 3. Safari quickly loads HTML web pages more than three times faster than IE 8 and three times faster than Firefox 3.*

Starting with the development of the open source WebKit browser engine, Apple has been leading the industry in defining and implementing innovative web standards. Safari 4 includes HTML 5 support for offline technologies and support for advanced CSS Effects, enabling an entirely new class of web applications that feature rich media, graphics and fonts. Safari 4 is the first browser to pass the Web Standards Project's Acid3 test, which examines how well a browser adheres to CSS, JavaScript, XML and SVG standards that are specifically designed for dynamic web applications.

Safari 4 includes Top Sites, for an incredible visual preview of frequently visited and favorite pages; Full History Search, to search through titles, web addresses and the complete text of recently viewed pages; and Cover Flow, to easily flip through web history or bookmarks. Other innovative features include Smart Address Fields for automatically completing web addresses from an easy to read list of suggestions; Search Fields, to fine tune searches with recommendations from Google Suggest or a list of recent searches; and Full Page Zoom, for a closer look at any website without degrading the quality of the site's layout and text.

In Mac OS(R) X Snow Leopard(TM), available later this year, Safari runs as a 64-bit application, boosting the performance of the Nitro JavaScript engine by up to 50 percent.** Snow Leopard makes Safari more resistant to crashes by running plug-ins in a separate process, so even if a plug-in crashes, Safari continues to run and the user simply has to reload the affected page.

    Pricing & Availability

Safari 4 is available for both Mac OS X and Windows as a free download at http://www.apple.com/safari. SAN FRANCISCO, June 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today unveiled Mac OS(R) X Snow Leopard(TM), an even more powerful and refined version of the world's most advanced operating system and the foundation for future Mac(R) innovation. Snow Leopard builds on a decade of OS X innovation and success with hundreds of refinements, new core technologies, out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange and new accessibility features. Snow Leopard will ship as an upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard users in September 2009 for $29.

"We've built on the success of Leopard and created an even better experience for our users from installation to shutdown," said Bertrand Serlet, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. "Apple engineers have made hundreds of improvements so with Snow Leopard your system is going to feel faster, more responsive and even more reliable than before."

To create Snow Leopard, Apple engineers focused on perfecting the world's most advanced operating system, refining 90 percent of the more than 1,000 projects in Mac OS X. Users will notice a more responsive Finder(TM); Mail that loads messages 85 percent faster and conducts searches up to 90 percent faster;* Time Machine(R) with up to 50 percent faster initial backup;* a Dock with Expose integration; a 64-bit version of Safari(R) 4 that boosts the performance of the Nitro JavaScript engine by up to 50 percent** and is resistant to crashes caused by plug-ins. Snow Leopard also includes an all new QuickTime(R) X, with a redesigned player that allows users to easily view, record, trim and share video to YouTube, MobileMe(TM) or iTunes(R). Snow Leopard is half the size of the previous version and frees up to 6GB of drive space once installed.

For the first time, system applications including Finder, Mail, iCal(R), iChat(R) and Safari are 64-bit and Snow Leopard's support for 64-bit processors makes use of large amounts of RAM, increases performance, and improves security while remaining compatible with 32-bit applications. Grand Central Dispatch (GCD) provides a revolutionary new way for software to take advantage of multicore processors. GCD is integrated throughout Snow Leopard, from new system-wide APIs to high-level frameworks and programming language extensions, improving responsiveness across the system. OpenCL, a C-based open standard, allows developers to tap the incredible power of the graphics processing unit for tasks that go beyond graphics.

Snow Leopard builds support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 right into Mac OS X Mail, Address Book and iCal so you can use these applications to send and receive email, create and respond to meeting invitations, and search and manage your contacts with global address lists. Exchange information works seamlessly within Snow Leopard so users can take advantage of OS X only features such as fast Spotlight(TM) searches and Quick Look previews. Snow Leopard is the only desktop operating system with out of the box support for Exchange 2007 and businesses of any size will find it easier to integrate Macs into their organization.

Every Mac includes innovative features and technologies for users with special needs, and Snow Leopard adds groundbreaking new features that make the Mac experience even more accessible to those with a vision impairment. Apple's Multi-Touch(TM) trackpad is now integrated with the VoiceOver screen reader so users can hear and navigate different parts of a window or the desktop by moving a single finger around the trackpad as if it were the screen. (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090608/SF28883)

"Across the line, all of our new MacBook Pro models now include Apple's innovative built-in battery for up to seven hours of battery life, while staying just as thin and light as before," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "Starting at just $1,199, the aluminum unibody MacBook Pro is more affordable than ever and sets a new standard for environmentally friendly notebook design."

The new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro models include Apple's innovative built-in notebook battery for up to seven hours of wireless productivity on a single charge without adding thickness, weight or cost. Using Adaptive Charging and advanced chemistry first introduced with the 17-inch MacBook Pro earlier this year, the built-in battery delivers up to 1,000 recharges before it reaches 80 percent of its original capacity--nearly three times the lifespan of conventional batteries.** The longer battery lifespan equals fewer depleted batteries and less waste.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro is a significant upgrade at a lower price than the original aluminum MacBook it replaces. With the same sleek and durable design popular with consumers, students and professionals, all 13-inch MacBook Pro models now include a seven hour built-in battery, an SD card slot, a FireWire 800 port, an illuminated keyboard and an improved LED-backlit display with 60 percent greater color gamut. Featuring the powerful NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is available in two models: one with a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive priced at $1,199, and another with a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive priced at $1,499.

The perfect balance of performance and portability, the 15-inch MacBook Pro now features a seven hour built-in battery, an SD card slot, an improved LED-backlit display with 60 percent greater color gamut and 4GB of RAM across the line at an entry price $300 less than before. The new 15-inch MacBook Pro is available in three models: a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system with a 250GB hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics for a new entry price of $1,699; a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system with a 320GB hard drive, and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT graphics for $1,999; and a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system with a 500GB hard drive, and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT graphics for $2,299.

The 17-inch MacBook Pro, which includes an eight hour built-in battery, an ExpressCard slot, a brilliant LED-backlit display, 4GB of RAM and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT graphics, has been updated to include a faster 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a larger 500GB hard drive for $2,499, which is $300 less than before.

All MacBook Pro systems feature Apple's revolutionary aluminum unibody design and for the first time can be upgraded with up to 8GB of RAM, and up to a 500GB hard drive or up to a 256GB solid state drive. The 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models can also be upgraded to a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. All MacBook Pro systems include a next generation, industry-standard Mini DisplayPort to connect with the 24-inch Apple LED Cinema Display.

Apple today also updated the incredibly thin and light MacBook Air(R), making it more powerful and more affordable. Measuring just 0.16 to 0.76-inches thin and weighing just three pounds, the MacBook Air is available in two models starting with the new entry price of $1,499 for a 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system with a 120GB hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, and a 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system with a 128GB solid state drive and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics for $1,799.

Every Mac notebook achieves EPEAT Gold status and meets Energy Star 5.0 requirements, setting a new standard for environmentally friendly notebook design. Each unibody enclosure is made of highly recyclable aluminum and comes standard with energy efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. All MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models contain no brominated flame retardants and use internal cables and components that are PVC-free. The built-in battery design results in less waste and depleted batteries can be replaced for $129 or $179, which includes installation and disposal of your old battery in an environmentally responsible manner.

Every MacBook Pro comes with Apple's innovative iLife(R) '09 featuring iPhoto(R) for managing photos, iMovie(R) for making movies and GarageBand(R) for creating and learning to play music. Every Mac also runs Leopard(R), the world's most advanced operating system, featuring Time Machine(R), an effortless way to automatically back up everything on a Mac; Spaces(R), an intuitive feature used to create groups of applications and instantly switch between them; Mail with easy setup and elegant, personalized stationery; and iChat(R), the most advanced video chat.

Atmel QTouch Library Now Supports AVR and AVR32 Microcontrollers

    SAN JOSE, California, June 8 /PRNewswire/ --

Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) announced today the new release of the popular Atmel QTouch Library, a royalty free software library providing access to the industry-leading QTouch(TM) technology. Without the need for external devices, the QTouch Library adds capacitive touch capabilities to AVR(R) and AVR32 microcontrollers. The new library consists of pre-compiled and object code binaries, which can be configured individually as touch keys, or combined in groups to form sliders, navigation wheels or combinations of all these. The QTouch Library allows full user customization and optimization of the touch function.

Atmel's complete Development Tools System, available now, makes it easy to develop a reliable high-performance touch application based on the AVR and AVR32 microcontrollers. With the market leading AVR and AVR32 microcontrollers, adding touch functionality to the application is done while still allowing the majority of the microcontroller resources to be used for the application software. "Adding touch capability to the user's application is a unique feature with the QTouch Library which Atmel offers due to the high performance of our microcontrollers. Other industry alternatives use all the microcontroller performance for the touch function, not allowing for any application software to run reliably simultaneously," said Ingar Fredriksen, Atmel's AVR Product Marketing Director.

"This extension of the QTouch Library allows Atmel to offer our superior touch technology for a full range of AVR and a selection of AVR32 UC3 devices. Atmel's customers can freely select one of our tinyAVR(R), megaAVR(R), XMega(R) or AVR32 UC3A devices and add touch functionality to their design," continued Ingar Fredriksen. "We have received an overwhelmingly positive response to Atmel's QTouch Library, it is easy to use, and easily adds capacitive touch to users' applications. The reliable and high-performance QTouch technology inspires our users to create new and innovative user interfaces. This is an important step in our strategy to offer our QTouch solution to the entire range of Atmel's microcontrollers."

    Availability and Pricing

The QTouch Library is available now to register and download at the product web page together with AVR QTouch Studio, free frontend software supporting the two available demonstration boards ATAVRTS2080A and ATAVRTS2080B, supporting ATmega88 and ATtiny88, respectively.

More Cable TV Choice for Consumers in Marblehead, Mass.Thousands More Consumers, Small Businesses Now Can Order Verizon's FiOS TV, the Only TV Service Delivered Over Nation's Most Advanced Fiber-Optic Network Straight to Consumers

MARBLEHEAD, Mass., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers and small businesses in Marblehead have more choice in cable TV providers now that Verizon has introduced FiOS TV -- the ultimate home-entertainment experience with a broad range of programming choices and superior picture quality available to thousands more Bay Staters.

Marblehead is among 96 Massachusetts communities (see list below) where the company's new television service is or soon will be offered -- the only TV service delivered over the nation's most advanced all-fiber network directly connecting to millions of individual homes and businesses.

Verizon recently added more than 90 new channels, including 71 more high-definition (HD) channels, to its FiOS TV lineup in Massachusetts. As a result, FiOS TV now offers more than 500 total channels -- including more than 100 HD channels, more than any local cable TV company, including Comcast.

"FiOS TV gives consumers in Marblehead an outstanding alternative for their video entertainment with superior picture-and-sound quality, innovative, interactive features that cable can't match," said Donna Cupelo, Verizon region president for Massachusetts and Rhode Island. "Customers in these communities who liked what FiOS did for their Internet connection will love what it does for their TV. We've harnessed the vast capacity of our advanced fiber-optic network to deliver a revolutionary, new entertainment experience giving customers the best choice for TV."

Massachusetts residents who are FiOS TV-eligible now have the option to trim their monthly bills by bundling FiOS TV service, FiOS Internet service and the Verizon Freedom Essentials unlimited calling plan, for as little as $99.99 a month. They also can add a Verizon Wireless calling plan for a Grand Slam of communications and entertainment services.

New customers who order the Triple Play bundle of FiOS TV, Internet, and Voice service by June 20 can get a $150 cash card.

Marblehead consumers can check online at http://www.verizon.com/fios for more information or to request that Verizon contact them when FiOS services become available. Customers also can call their local Verizon sales office or 888-GET FiOS (888-438-3467).

Small and medium-sized businesses interested in business-grade FiOS services can visit http://www.verizon.com/bizfiostv to see online rebate offers of up to $409 depending on the services selected, or call 877-FiOS BIZ (877-346-7249) for more information.

Subscribers can use the service to remotely review, change or add recording requests; delete recorded programs; browse and search TV and video-on-demand listings; set parental controls; and more. -- Widgets - Customers have one-touch, on-demand access to personalized information such as local weather and traffic reports, daily local and national news headlines, fantasy sports, daily national sports headlines, and daily horoscopes all while still enjoying your TV programming. -- Free casual games - With the remote control and an HD set-top box, customers can access chess, solitaire, suduko and wordplay. -- "What's Hot on FiOS TV" - Features information on the most-popular programs currently being broadcast in the region and the most popular VOD titles. -- "Wait for Me" - Allows customers to pause live programming, change channels, and then return to the paused program and pick up where they left off. -- Channel sorting options - Customers can create two separate lists of favorite channels for family members. Customers also can filter channels in the guide by genre, for instances where a customer only may want to see HD content, international channels or kids programming, among others. -- Fantasy Football - FiOS TV customers who are registered users of ESPN Fantasy Football will have instant on-screen access to personalized NFL statistics, including rosters, box scores, scoring leaders and player information.

Programming choices for Hispanic, African-American, Asian, Russian and other multicultural audiences are available in every market, making FiOS TV an outlet for emerging and independent networks to showcase their diverse programming.

FiOS TV is designed to be a formidable competitor to cable and satellite. Verizon's fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network, the largest of its kind in the country, is currently under construction in more than half the states where the company offers landline communications services, including almost 100 Massachusetts communities.

Verizon's FiOS TV service was selected as the top-ranked residential television service provider in the Northeast region by J.D. Power for 2008. FiOS TV is currently available to more than 9.7 million premises in 14 states: California, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

The network brings the power and capacity of fiber optics directly into people's homes and has industry-leading quality and reliability. Fiber delivers amazingly sharp pictures and sound, and has the capacity to transmit a wide array of high-definition programming that is so clear and intense it seems to leap from the TV screen. It also delivers Internet download speeds of up to 50 Mbps* (megabits per second) and upload speeds of up to 20 Mbps as well as high-quality voice services.

(More information about FiOS TV and fiber optics is available in Verizon's online News Center at http://www.verizon.com/news.)

The value of FiOS TV extends to the installation and customer support. Specially trained Verizon technicians will install the service and acquaint subscribers with FiOS TV features and services. Verizon is waiving the installation fee for up to three existing TV outlets, and there is no charge to install a needed optical network terminal at the subscriber's home. Charges for other installation services, such as additional outlets, may apply. Verizon provides 24 x 7 technical assistance by phone from its Fiber Solutions Centers in Providence, R.I., and other cities.
