Microsoft Promotes Steven Sinofsky to President, Windows Division

Microsoft Corp. today promoted Steven Sinofsky to president of the
Windows Division. Sinofsky, a 20-year Microsoft veteran, most recently led
the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, contributing to the Oct. 22
availability of Windows 7.

18th Air Force Commander C-130J Delivery Continues U.S. Air Force Build-Up of Super Hercules Fleet
MARIETTA, Ga., July 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lockheed Martin yesterday delivered the 14th of 16 C-130J Super Hercules to Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark. The aircraft will be assigned to the 41st Airlift Squadron, the first active-duty combat C-130J squadron in the U.S. Air Force. This latest C-130J Super Hercules was accepted by Major General Winfield W. Scott III, Commander 18th Air Force, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.
"After we deliver this aircraft to Little Rock, this C-130J could be flying a combat mission within the week, if so tasked. That's a testament to the employees who build this aircraft and the quality of the aircraft," Scott said. "The C-130J is a great aircraft, the capabilities of which we are just beginning to touch on. C-130Js from the 41st Airlift Squadron "Black Cats" are engaged in high-tempo operations in multiple combat theaters. In the last two years, the 41st has already carried 56,000 passengers, 3,500 tons of cargo and flown 2,600 combat sorties over 4,000 flight hours. Since the Air Force started operating the C-130J in 2000, it has flown 40,000 sorties and about 87,000 flying hours.
The C-130J is a proven airlifter that has been selected by 11 countries. As of March 2009 263 C-130Js have been ordered and 174 have been delivered. The C-130J is a flexible, multimission aircraft that is available in varied configurations to meet a wide-range of operational needs.

Government of Canada Names General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada as Prime Contractor for LAV III Upgrade Program
LONDON, Ontario, July 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, with Lieutenant-General Andrew Leslie, Chief of the Land Staff, announced today that the Government of Canada has approved an upgrade program for the LAV III family of vehicles. General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada will be the prime contractor and systems integrator for this program.
General Dynamics will now work closely with the Department of National Defence in defining the scope of the LAV III upgrades. At the heart of the upgrade program is a high-capacity driveline and suspension that significantly increases the vehicle's payload. Increased payload will allow the vehicle the ability to deliver even better protection for Canadian soldiers. Other features of the upgrade package will be determined through discussions with the Department of National Defence.

Stacking of New Space Vehicle Begins at Kennedy Space CenterUSA and ATK Support NASA in Major Milestone
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time in more than a quarter-century, a new space vehicle will begin stacking on a mobile launch platform (MLP) at Kennedy Space Center, thanks to the hard work and dedication of an experienced team of employees from NASA and contractors United Space Alliance (USA) and Alliant Techsystems .

The Ares I-X aft skirt, which was mated to a solid fuel segment in the Rotation, Processing and Surge Facility at KSC, rolled over to the 528-foot-tall Vehicle Assembly Building today, where it will be lifted and placed on the MLP in High Bay 3. On that platform, workers will secure the aft booster and continue adding segments of the first stage rocket, the upper stage simulators, the crew module mockup and the launch abort system simulator, taking the vehicle to a height of 327 feet.
Once complete, the Ares I-X rocket will roll to Launch Pad 39B for the first test flight of the vehicle later this year. This vehicle is part of NASA's Constellation Program, which aims to send humans back to the Moon and beyond.

USA, NASA's prime human spaceflight operations contractor, has been tasked by NASA with planning and processing for the test flight. "Processing for the Ares I-X test flight in parallel with Space Shuttle operations has been a true challenge involving people and hardware from across the country. Working two human spaceflight programs in parallel is new territory for NASA and for its contractor partners, and we're very proud of what we've accomplished," Nappi added.
The Ares I-X test flight is aimed primarily at testing the performance of the first stage rocket.
"As we reach this critical processing milestone, we reflect on the tremendous amount of work this team has completed over the last three years," said Robert Herman, Florida site director for ATK, NASA's prime contractor for the Ares I first stage rocket. "We are honored to play a critical role in the future of America's human space flight program, and the Ares I-X flight test is the proof of concept that Ares I will build on."
USA is teamed with ATK on the design, production and processing of the Ares I First Stage. Assembly and integration work on the Ares I-X aft skirt, forward assembly and fifth motor segment simulator, the deceleration parachutes, the thrust Vector control subsystem hardware and the avionics and pyrotechnics was performed at KSC. The four solid motor segments were delivered by ATK from its Utah facility.

OAKLAND, Calif., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Allen Temple Foundation Learning Center has received a $20,000 grant from Verizon to expand the center's after-school enrichment program. The grant brings to $50,000 the funding that the center has received from Verizon since 2007 to reach out to disadvantaged youth.
The latest grant will be used to provide 120 additional youth in east Oakland with an after-school curriculum that seeks to improve literacy skills through training in computer skills, math, science, language arts and music. The program also improves behavior by boosting students' confidence in their abilities and teaching constructive conflict-resolution skills.

Complaint Against Level 3 Over Non-Payment Advances at the California Public Utilities CommissionHyperCube Files to Compel Level 3 to Place Funds in Escrow Pending Resolution
LANCASTER, Texas, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- HyperCube LLC., a competitive local exchange carrier, today filed a motion before the Public Utilities Commission of the State of California (CPUC) seeking to compel Level 3 Communications, Inc. to place funds in escrow with a third party agent pending resolution of the action between HyperCube and Level 3 currently before the CPUC.
From November 2005 through November 2007, Level 3 was paying HyperCube for access services pursuant to HyperCube's valid intrastate and interstate tariffs. Beginning in November 2007, shortly after announcing that the company was sharply reducing guidance for its financial performance, Level 3 unilaterally began refusing to pay HyperCube for services provided nationwide.
On May 8, 2009, HyperCube filed a complaint with the CPUC due to Level 3's unlawful refusal to pay for tariffed access services performed by HyperCube in connection with Level 3's provision of toll-free calls that originate and terminate in the State of California. In accordance with the directive of the CPUC, HyperCube continues to route calls destined to Level 3's toll-free subscribers even though Level 3 has refused to pay HyperCube's CPUC approved tariffed rates for the work it performs for Level 3. As of July 8, 2009, Level 3 owes HyperCube approximately $19 million for interstate and intrastate calls. HyperCube has initially requested that Level 3 be compelled to place approximately $5.3 million with a third party escrow agent pending resolution of the action between HyperCube and Level 3 currently before the CPUC.

In New Jersey, an 83-year-old man with dementia was reported missing by his wife. Deputies with the Atlantic County Sheriff's Department logged onto the secure LoJack SafetyNet database to obtain specific information on the man to aid in his rescue.
