Blackboard Adds iPhone & Mobile Web Platform to Product SuiteBlackboard Acquires Terriblyclever to Support Mobile Education
WASHINGTON, July 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Blackboard Inc. , a global leader in education technology, today announced a major step in its efforts to support students' mobile lifestyle with the acquisition of Terriblyclever Design, LLC, makers of MobilEdu(TM), the category defining suite of iPhone(TM) and mobile Web applications for education.
MobilEdu allows education institutions to deliver a rich set of campus life services and content to mobile devices, uniquely branded for each institution, to better connect current students, parents, faculty, prospective students and alumni to the campus experience in a way that wasn't possible before.
With an Apple iPhone, iPod Touch or other device with a mobile Web browser, MobilEdu users can navigate course catalogs and campus maps, e-mail professors and classmates and get real-time updates on their course schedules, campus events, news and sports teams.
"Today's students want to do everything with their mobile devices, including managing their social, school and work lives," said Michael L. Chasen, President and CEO of Blackboard. "Mobile is just beginning to emerge and no one is doing more to define the space in education than Terriblyclever. We're pleased to join forces to help institutions get serious about meeting the expectations of students and other campus constituents who live and learn in a mobile, digital world."
San Francisco-based Terriblyclever was started by a group of students who worked with Stanford University to build iStanford, a set of iPhone applications to support campus life. Terriblyclever has also developed iPhone and mobile Web campus applications for Duke University, Medical College of Georgia, Texas A&M University and several other higher education and K-12 institutions.
"We're proud of the technology we've developed, and excited about the prospect of bringing it to a wider community of institutions," said Kayvon Beykpour, co-founder of Terriblyclever who joins Blackboard as Vice President and leads the Company's focus on mobile technologies for education. "We started MobilEdu because we wanted to empower students and faculty by allowing them to engage with their university in a powerful and mobile way. Joining forces with Blackboard was the best way to work towards that vision, and we couldn't be more excited."
Now part of the Blackboard family of solutions, MobilEdu is an independent platform that can be accessed by users who download their institution's iPhone application from the Apple iPhone AppStore to their iPhone or other mobile device. Once up and running, an institution can enable MobilEdu users to:
-- Navigate a school's entire course catalog and utilize one-touch
navigation to directories and maps to find out more about course
professors and locations.
-- Identify exact campus location using GPS, search for buildings by name
or address and see photos of the building.
-- Check news, schedules, and real-time scores for athletic teams and
browse and receive alerts on general news articles for the
institution.
-- Access iTunes U, YouTube, or custom video content including course
lectures.
-- Find students and staff in the school directory, access calendars for
special events and campus happenings and browse and share images from
a school's photo archives.
In addition, with their open API institutions can extend the MobileEdu platform to fully customize and personalize the school's iPhone and mobile Web interfaces.

Europe's Spectrum Refarming for 3G will Help Operators Expand Coverage and Reduce Costs, finds Pyramid Research
CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, July 14 /PRNewswire/ --
Spectrum refarming, one of the most significant Europe-wide regulatory
changes to affect the mobile industry in the past 20 years, will benefit
operators by increasing network capacity and improving the availability and
quality of existing services, according to a new report from Pyramid Research
(www.pyr.com), the telecom research arm of the Light Reading Communications
Network (www.lightreading.com).
Spectrum Refarming for 3G: A Low-Cost Boost for Mobile Broadband analyzes
the advantages of refarming 900MHz spectrum for UMTS, looking at data usage,
mobile broadband computing, frequency characteristics, capex, 3G coverage,
and competition. This 15-page report draws on the refarming experience in
three key countries, Finland, Switzerland, and the U.K., to discuss different
regulatory considerations and evaluate strategies. Download an excerpt of
this report here: http://www.pyr.com/downloads.htm?id=5&sc=PR071409_INEUR1.5.
Since 3G data cards were introduced across Europe in late 2007 and 2008,
the number of data card subscriptions has grown at an amazing pace, notes
Andrei Tchadliev, analyst at Pyramid Research and author of the report. "At
the end of 2008, there were more than 22 million such subscriptions across
Europe, and we expect this number to exceed 100 million in 2014," he says.
"Healthy competition, meanwhile, has meant that operators continue to expand
usage allowances and lower prices while pushing network capacity to the
limit," he adds. Due to this, national regulators across Europe have begun
consultations on refarming 900MHz-band spectrum previously allocated to GSM
services. This spectrum is instead to be used for the next generation of
mobile communications, namely 3G-UMTS.
"Spectrum refarming is one of the most significant regulatory changes to
affect the mobile industry in the past 20 years, however, those with 900MHz
assets see refarming as a threat to their competitive advantage as well as to
the quality of their networks," Tchadliev says. "Although operators may feel
threatened by the prospect of losing their existing spectrum assets, the
opportunity to expand coverage and reduce costs outweighs any hesitation they
may have about service deterioration or loss of market share from reduced
spectrum holdings," he explains.
"But the move to provide 3G over the 900MHz spectrum is by no means the
end game; operators must begin examining opportunities to deploy 4G services
over the digital dividend frequencies when they become available," Tchadliev
says.

Masimo Rad-87(R) Pulse CO-Oximeter(TM) Garners Silver 2009 Medical Design Excellence AwardAward Honors Product Innovation, Design and Engineering Achievement, End-user Benefit, and Cost-effectiveness in Manufacturing and Healthcare Delivery
IRVINE, Calif., July 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Masimo , the inventor of Pulse CO-Oximetry(TM) and Measure-Through Motion and Low-Perfusion pulse oximetry, has received the 2009 Silver Medical Design Excellence Award in the general hospital devices and therapeutic products category for the Masimo Rad-87 Pulse CO-Oximeter. The award recognizes Rad-87's excellence in medical technology engineering and design as an intuitive bedside patient monitor that helps improve clinical efficiency and keep patients safe when a clinician can't be at the bedside.
The Masimo Rad-87 features the breakthrough noninvasive blood constituent monitoring capabilities of Masimo Rainbow SET Pulse CO-Oximetry for continuous monitoring of hemoglobin, carbon monoxide, methemoglobin, PVI (fluid responsiveness), perfusion index, and measure through motion pulse oximetry with upgradability to acoustic respiration rate monitoring. Its built-in 802.11a/b/g radio allows wireless communication with the Masimo Patient SafetyNet(TM) remote monitoring and clinician notification system to provide patients with an enhanced level of safety on general care floors. Designed for ease-of-use, the Rad-87 allows the features clinicians need most often to be accessed with a single touch. And, as the first Masimo Rainbow SET device with a bright white LED-based display, its high contrast visual display allows measurements to be clearly seen from across the room, while an innovative new device profile feature lets clinical settings be customized and color-coded for a particular care area.
Masimo Founder and CEO, Joe E. Kiani, stated, "It is an honor to receive our third Medical Design Excellence Award for product design and engineering innovations that improve healthcare delivery and advance medical practices. We received the Gold Medical Design Excellence Award in 2006 for the Masimo Rad-57 Pulse CO-Oximeter and in 2001 for the Masimo Radical Signal Extraction pulse oximeter."
The Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) competition is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes advances in the design of medical products and the achievements of medical device manufacturers responsible for the groundbreaking innovations that are changing the face of healthcare. 2009 MDEA winners were announced and honored at the June 10th ceremony during the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East Conference and Exposition in New York. About Masimo
Masimo develops innovative monitoring technologies that significantly improve patient care--helping solve "unsolvable" problems. In 1995, the company debuted Measure-Through-Motion-and-Low-Perfusion pulse oximetry, known as Masimo SET, which virtually eliminated false alarms and increased pulse oximetry's ability to detect life-threatening events. More than 100 independent and objective studies demonstrate Masimo SET provides the most reliable SpO2 and pulse rate measurements even under the most challenging clinical conditions, including patient motion and low peripheral perfusion. In 2005, Masimo introduced Masimo Rainbow SET Pulse CO-Oximetry, a breakthrough noninvasive blood constituent monitoring platform that can measure many blood constituents that previously required invasive procedures. Masimo Rainbow SET continuously and noninvasively measures total hemoglobin (SpHb(TM)), oxygen content (SpOC(TM)), carboxyhemoglobin (SpCO ), methemoglobin (SpMet ), and PVI(TM), in addition to oxyhemoglobin (SpO2), pulse rate (PR), and perfusion index (PI), allowing early detection and treatment of potentially life-threatening conditions. Founded in 1989, Masimo has the mission of "Improving Patient Outcomes and Reducing Cost of Care by Taking Noninvasive Monitoring to New Sites and Applications." Europe's Spectrum Refarming for 3G will Help Operators Expand Coverage and Reduce Costs, finds Pyramid Research
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Spectrum refarming, one of the most significant Europe-wide regulatory changes to affect the mobile industry in the past 20 years, will benefit operators by increasing network capacity and improving the availability and quality of existing services, according to a new report from Pyramid Research (http://www.pyr.com/), the telecom research arm of the Light Reading Communications Network (http://www.lightreading.com/).
Spectrum Refarming for 3G: A Low-Cost Boost for Mobile Broadband analyzes the advantages of refarming 900MHz spectrum for UMTS, looking at data usage, mobile broadband computing, frequency characteristics, capex, 3G coverage, and competition. This 15-page report draws on the refarming experience in three key countries, Finland, Switzerland, and the U.K., to discuss different regulatory considerations and evaluate strategies. Download an excerpt of this report here: http://www.pyr.com/downloads.htm?id=5&sc=PR071409_INEUR1.5.
Since 3G data cards were introduced across Europe in late 2007 and 2008, the number of data card subscriptions has grown at an amazing pace, notes Andrei Tchadliev, analyst at Pyramid Research and author of the report. "At the end of 2008, there were more than 22 million such subscriptions across Europe, and we expect this number to exceed 100 million in 2014," he says. "Healthy competition, meanwhile, has meant that operators continue to expand usage allowances and lower prices while pushing network capacity to the limit," he adds. Due to this, national regulators across Europe have begun consultations on refarming 900MHz-band spectrum previously allocated to GSM services. This spectrum is instead to be used for the next generation of mobile communications, namely 3G-UMTS.
"Spectrum refarming is one of the most significant regulatory changes to affect the mobile industry in the past 20 years, however, those with 900MHz assets see refarming as a threat to their competitive advantage as well as to the quality of their networks," Tchadliev says. "Although operators may feel threatened by the prospect of losing their existing spectrum assets, the opportunity to expand coverage and reduce costs outweighs any hesitation they may have about service deterioration or loss of market share from reduced spectrum holdings," he explains.
"But the move to provide 3G over the 900MHz spectrum is by no means the end game; operators must begin examining opportunities to deploy 4G services over the digital dividend frequencies when they become available," Tchadliev says.
Spectrum Refarming for 3G: A Low-Cost Boost for Mobile Broadband is part of Pyramid Research's Europe Telecom Insider report series. FiOS Internet Highlights
Verizon's 50/20 Mbps (megabits per second) FiOS Internet connection is the fastest available to Rancho Cucamonga consumers.* FiOS Internet provides the ultra-fast, two-way speeds crucial for such burgeoning online activities as video conferencing, social networking and super-fast uploading of electronic photo albums or home videos, as well as multi-player gaming and online work collaboration. Verizon's FiOS Internet service is now available at newly increased speeds of 15/5 Mbps and 25/15 Mbps.
Verizon's FiOS Internet service was named the top pick in PC Magazine's 2008 readers' survey and also was named a winner in PC World Magazine's The 100 Best Products of 2008 -- the second year in a row the broadband service made both lists.
At 50 Mbps, downloading a 5 GB (gigabyte) file, such as 112-minute, high-definition movie purchased online, takes approximately 13.3 minutes, while a 50 MB (megabyte), or 60-minute, Web video takes eight seconds, and a 5 MB MP3 music file takes less than eight-tenths of a second.
Using a 20 Mbps upstream broadband connection, a consumer could upload a 250 MB file of 200 photos in about 90 seconds, instead of the roughly 47 minutes it takes over a 768 Kbps (kilobits per second) upstream connection. A 3 GB file, such as a one-hour family video shot with a high-definition video camera, could be uploaded in around 20 minutes, compared with more than nine hours with 768 Kbps upstream.
Residential customers can learn more information and order FiOS by calling 888-GET FiOS (888-438-3467) or visiting http://www.verizon.com/fios. Small and medium-sized businesses can place orders by visiting http://www.verizon.com/bizfiostv or calling 877-FiOS BIZ (877-346-7249) for more information.

NI Technology Updates Outlooks for Nokia, Xilinx, Microvision and AU Optronics
PRINCETON, N.J., July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Next Inning Technology Research (http://www.nextinning.com/), an online investment newsletter focused on semiconductor and technology stocks, announced it has updated outlooks for Nokia , Xilinx , Microvision , and AU Optronics .
Editor Paul McWilliams has helped his subscribers generate huge returns on undervalued tech stocks in 2009. Out of the 80 stocks highlighted in his Undervalued Tech Stocks reports, 21 have produced returns in excess of 70% year to date. All of these were ranked as either good "strategic" or "speculative" buys. The average return for all stocks ranked as either "speculative" or "strategic" buys was 40.7%, better than twice the return of stocks he thought readers should avoid.
McWilliams now turns his attention to earnings season. In an exclusive series of reports, McWilliams offers data, charts, and analysis that illustrate important tech paradigms and highlight important trends that will move stocks during the upcoming quarter.
To read McWilliams' reports that are designed to prepare investors for the July earnings season, please accept our invitation to take a free 21-day, no risk test drive with Next Inning by visiting the following link:
https://www.nextinning.com/subscribe/index.php?refer=prn849
McWilliams covers these topics and more in his recent reports:
-- The smartphone sector has been a bright spot during the last six months and many of the stocks in the sector have posted significant gains. What has held the price of Nokia down? Is there a value proposition here that Wall Street is missing?
-- Xilinx lowered its calendar Q2 guidance earlier this month and stated in the press release it was due to a shortage of Virtex-5 parts. Many observers took this as bad news for Xilinx and its supplier, UMC. However, after researching the situation, McWilliams determined that this was the wrong way to view the situation. What did McWilliams learn that casts this news in an entirely different light for not only Xilinx and UMC, but for TSMC and a long list of other semiconductor companies?
-- Microvision has moved up 50% since McWilliams highlighted an opportunity in the stock in late May. Does he believe the stock can still move much higher?
-- The price of AU Optronics has advanced roughly 15% since McWilliams alerted readers to an opportunity in the stock on March 26th. At what price does McWilliams suggest investors take profits?
Founded in September 2002, Next Inning's model portfolio has returned 163% since its inception versus 0% for the S&P 500.

AT&T Hosts Company's First Cell Phone Training Session for People With Vision LossAT&T and AFB join to help people make better use of wireless phones
DALLAS, July 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Working with the American Foundation for the Blind, AT&T* announced today that it is holding its first training sessions nationwide to help people with vision loss make better use of their wireless phones. The public service initiative is an expansion of AT&T's popular cell phone training program for senior citizens.
"AT&T's free education program is a wonderful way to provide people with a better understanding of all the advantages available from wireless technology," said Judy Scott, director of the AFB Center on Vision Loss in Dallas, where two-day sessions are being held.
"People of all ages can ask questions about their own phones and learn how to use features they need or want to use independently," she said.
"Providing useful and cost effective tips, encouragement and better access to these communication devices is very empowering for people with vision problems," she said.
Participants will bring their mobile phones, regardless of which wireless carrier they currently use, for one-on-one sessions with AT&T volunteers. Demonstration phones are also available for people without phones. The training sessions cover everything from mobile phone basics such as controlling the volume, to checking voice mail, storing numbers in the phone's address book, and software that magnifies screen sizes and provides verbal instructions to users.
"By making people more comfortable with their cell phones, these training sessions will help people improve their quality of life, stay better connected with their friends and family and become more productive members of society," said state Rep. Tan Parker.
"Making daily life more manageable and more independent through wireless technology is a great way to help people with vision loss," said Congressman Pete Sessions.
"Increasing awareness of services such as free voice calling - where you don't have to dial the number of the person you're calling - will be a tremendous help," said state Rep. Mark Shelton.
AT&T has conducted similar trainings across the country through the Cell Phone Training for Seniors program, begun in November 2007, with the first training in Houston, Texas. Since then the company has worked with organizations such as OASIS and the AFB to train more than 4,000 senior citizens on how to use a wireless device.
"These trainings have proven to be very effective at providing the tips and tools necessary to enable consumers to stay connected with their friends, family and community," said Cindy Brinkley, AT&T chief diversity officer. "We are proud to be working with the American Foundation for the Blind to expand the trainings to others who may need help making full use of their wireless phones."
Participants will also tour Esther's Place, a premier independent living model apartment at the Center designed to demonstrate how to make life easier for people who are blind or losing their vision.

Carrier Ethernet Access Platform Market Maintains Steam in 1Q09, Poises for Solid Growth Through 2013, Heavy Reading ReportsHatteras and Overture Continue to Lead Copper-Based CEAP Segments
NEW YORK, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Worldwide sales of copper-based carrier Ethernet access platforms rose 42 percent year-over-year to $266 million in the rolling four-quarter period ending in 1Q09, according to the new Carrier Ethernet Access Platform (CEAP) Quarterly Market Tracker service published by Heavy Reading (http://www.heavyreading.com/), the market research division of TechWeb's Light Reading (http://www.lightreading.com/). Copper-based CEAP platforms include Ethernet-over-bonded copper pair (G.shdsl and MIMO on DMT) and Ethernet-over-TDM access circuit solutions.
"Many service providers who collectively spent billions of dollars deploying carrier Ethernet/MPLS-based network infrastructure during 2006-2008 are now increasingly shifting their attention to adding low-cost copper- and fiber-based Ethernet endpoints to their networks," said Stan Hubbard, Senior Analyst at Heavy Reading and author of the CEAP Quarterly Market Tracker. "In 1Q09, global E-o-bonded copper pair platform sales grew slightly quarter-over-quarter, while E-o-TDM access circuit and E-o-fiber access platform revenues dipped only modestly on a sequential basis. This stands in sharp contrast to the double-digit sequential revenue declines we saw for carrier Ethernet switches and routers that sit further back in the network."
Heavy Reading estimates that the global market for combined E-o-bonded copper pair platform sales is likely to reach nearly $500 million by 2013. Industry feedback suggests that telecom operators are particularly attracted by the rapid return on investment offered by copper-based solutions that leverage the existing physical network infrastructure and help them better manage scarce capital resources during the economic recession. The larger Ethernet-over-fiber demarcation/access switch market also is likely to record substantial growth over the next several years, as Ethernet business services and mobile backhaul bandwidth requirements increase.
Hatteras maintained its longstanding leadership of the E-o-bonded copper pair platform segment after posting another quarter of sequential growth, fueled by deployments in the U.S. and Europe. No. 2 Actelis and No. 3 Adtran also registered solid performances in 1Q09. Other E-o-bonded copper pair platform suppliers include Adtran, NexComm, Positron/Aktino, RAD, and Zhone.
Overture Networks gained a share point and maintained its No. 1 position in the competitive E-o-TDM access circuit market. No. 2 ANDA finished close behind. Other suppliers include No. 3 RAD, ADVA, and nearly a dozen additional vendors with small market share.
Heavy Reading has identified 74 equipment manufacturers that sell nearly a dozen major types of wireline equipment for Ethernet access, including the three types of next-generation solutions the research firm tracks in the CEAP Quarterly Market Tracker: E-o-TDM access circuit, E-o-bonded copper pair, and E-o-fiber switch/demarcation platforms.
Heavy Reading's Carrier Ethernet Access Platform Quarterly Market Tracker delivers quarter-by-quarter revenue and market-share breakouts for each copper-based CEAP supplier and revenue projections through 2012. The quarterly tracking service also analyzes each vendor's market strategy and identifies and analyzes customer wins, providing granular insight into this emerging market sector unavailable from other sources. It provides a comprehensive list of more than 140 operators and other entities around the world that have purchased CEAP platforms.
Heavy Reading's CEAP Quarterly Market Tracker also includes estimates for Ethernet-over-fiber access platform sales of the suppliers profiled in the report.
The tracker provides in-depth analysis of 13 vendors that are now generating sales from CEAP products, including: Actelis Networks, Adtran, ADVA Optical Networking, Aktino, ANDA Networks, Ciena, Hatteras Networks, MRV Communications, NexComm Systems, Overture Networks, RAD Data Communications, Telco Systems, and Zhone Technologies.
The CEAP Quarterly Market Tracker is distributed in a convenient, plug-and-play PowerPoint format. Quarterly reports may be purchased individually or as part of an annual subscription service.

China Hangzhou Dragon Hotel Selects IBM to Implement Smart Hotel Transformation Project
HANGZHOU CITY, China, July 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- China Hangzhou Dragon Hotel (Dragon Hotel) has selected IBM to build an instrumented, interconnected and intelligent hotel management system as part of the hotel's transformation into a "Smart Hotel".
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090416/IBMLOGO )
Aimed at becoming the first platinum five-star hotel in the Hangzhou city, the Dragon Hotel is determined to leapfrog its competition by offering a totally new, unique, exciting client experience achieved through a RMB 1 billion upgrade project. As a major part of the three-prong project, IBM will implement a dynamic information technology (IT) infrastructure system comprising more than 20 sub-systems and solutions using IBM's industry expertise, integration capabilities and latest technology.
In addition, the project also includes the upgrading of the hotel room and infrastructure to a luxury environment as well as training of hotel management and staff.
The fully integrated IT system, when available for service early next year, is expected to boost the hotel's efficiency and productivity and reduce the operational cost, thus helping the hotel improve its competitive advantage.
Under the agreement, IBM will also integrate the hotel's major systems -- the hotel management system, the communications system and the one-stop service center -- which include the personal digital assistant (PDA) system, self check-in kiosk, interactive TV, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system, Internet telephony, cell phone system and room control system.
Prior to the implementation, IBM Global Technology Services designed a range of customized "Smart Hotel" solutions comprising IBM's RFID technology, Site and Facilities service and Integrated Communications services. Researchers and experts from IBM China Research labs provided consulting support, technical assessment and conducted lab testing of the solutions.
The Smart Hotel solutions are aimed at bringing new, exciting customer experience. For instance, with a special smart card, hotel guests will be able to check into the hotel directly in minutes, and personalized service will be provided by hotel staff who can access their PDAs for information about each of the customers. The information about each guest will be transmitted to an interactive TV system and IP phone system in the hotel room so welcome messages will be shown before clients entering the rooms. Electronic devices in hotel guest rooms will be automatically customized to the individual preference of the customers -- such as the room's brightness, temperature and humidity, which allow the customers to work and rest in a familiar and comfortable setting. The system will also automatically shift to the customers' national language, and the systems' background image and music will change when it comes to holidays, the customer's birthday or special occasions.
"In the hotel industry, technology can make a real difference by significantly enhancing the customer experience and maximize their comfort and satisfaction," said Eric Du, General Manager, Dragon Hotel. "Through the cooperation with IBM, Dragon Hotel would be able to build a Smart Hotel system to improve significantly the operational efficiency and productivity, the response time to client demands, and most of all, the client experience."
Dragon Hotel has been chosen as the official venue for conferences hosted by the Hangzhou Municipal Government. It is eager to continue its business growth and win in the promising, yet competitive, market. This, together with the challenges brought by the economic climate, has compelled Dragon Hotel to launch a large-scale upgrading project.
To support Dragon Hotel's objective to continue to be Hangzhou's preferred conference hotel, IBM will implement a conference management system which can make available market intelligence such as which exhibition area a particular conference attendee has visited and his attention span or when attending a banquet, guests can see on a LCD screen the seating plan and exact location of their seats upon arrival at the banquet hall.
Additionally, through collaboration with China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom, IBM will integrate China's six telecommunications networks into one platform -- the first of its kind in the industry. Every handheld set in the guest rooms can function as a mobile phone, used by room guests within the hotel to making local and international calls anywhere -- within the hotel, in and beyond the Hangzhou city, regardless of the communications network system for the receiving end.
"IBM is truly delighted to work with Dragon Hotel to fulfill its Smart Hotel vision and contribute to its growth," said Bernard Elharrar, General Manager, IBM Global Technology Services, Greater China Group. "We believe that the new Dragon Hotel will become the role model in the industry, and we are committed to this relationship, which will contribute to the ongoing development of Hangzhou's tourist industry."
