Semiconductor Software Product Brief

ITU G.729AB Vocoder

DSP56300G729ABP/D (Motorola Order Number) Rev. 0, 09/99

Introduction
In partnership with Signals + Software, Motorola has developed the G.729 Annex A (G.729a) and G729 Annex A with Annex B (G.729ab) speech coder software. This software offers excellent performance in a variety of Digital Simultaneous Voice Data (DSVD) applications, including the High-Performance Modem and Digital Set-top Box (DSTB) markets. The G.729a CODEC is accepted as part of the ITU standard for DSVD (V.70). G.729a will also be applicable in a number of different markets outside DSVD, where high compression and quality and low MIPS voice channels are required. Sold under license, the software is available for the Motorola DSP56300 family of processors.

Background
G.729a is a reduced complexity speech coder derived from the ITU-recommended speech coder, G.729. The Annex B extension adds Voice Activity Detection (VAD), Discontinuous Transmission (DTX) and Comfort Noise Generation (CNG) algorithms to G.729a. G.729a provides narrowband speech (300-3400Hz, sampled a 8kHz) to a bit rate of 8kb/s. This toll quality speech coder gives an eight-to-one bandwidth saving over standard 64kb/s G.711 PCM.

Features and Performance
The G.729a specification requires a Conjugate-Structure Algebraic-Code-Excited Linear Prediction (CS-ACELP) algorithm. Table 1 summarizes the performance of the algorithm.

ITU G.723.1 Vocoder

G.729a is less complex than G.729, requiring less MIPS, RAM, and ROM, with a low audio delay (10ms). However, it is bit stream compatible with G.729, at the expense of a marginal reduction in speech quality. This interoperability with G.729 is important because G.729 and G.729a are becoming the ITU's most commonly used voice compression standards and are widely accepted within the telecommunications industry. This fixed point implementation of the G.729a software passes the full set of ITU G.729a test vectors.

Interface Details
The DSP code consists of initialization and processing routines for both the encoder and decoder (including post filter) functions. An additional routine, in line with the ITU specification, performs the required synchronization facility (usually only required to verify that the code passes the test vectors). The initialization routines are called only on DSP reset. The audio input and output format is 8kHz linear samples, and the processing routines are called once per 80-sample frame. The encoder converts each input frame into an 80-bit parameter stream, which the decoder uses to reconstruct the signal.

Applications and Availability
The code is available now, under license, for a one-time payment and/or royalties, depending on the commercial application. Also available are: · · · Demonstration systems Application notes Support consultancy for code porting and integration
