MPC180 and MPC180e S c a l a b l e and Flexible Security Processors
The MPC180 and MPC180e Security Processors are the newest addition to Motorola's Smart Networks Platform. These security processors are designed to enhance system performance by executing computationally intense algorithms associated with the processing of IP Security Protocol (IPSec), Internet Key Exchange (IKE), Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS) protocols used in Broadband Access, Customer Premise Equipment ( C PE ) , Routers, WAP Gateways and other Access applications. The MPC180 and MPC180e offer a rich feature set with impressive performance. Both processors execute Data Encryption Standard (DES), Triple DES (3DES) and RC4 compatible ARC FOUR The family of processors is designed to interface gluelessly to the 8xx/60x system busses and the local bus on the 8260 to enable easy integration in systems already using Motorola's host processors and communications processors. bulk data encryption algorithms. While including all the functionalit y of the MPC180, the MPC180e h as the added public key encryption fe ature of Elliptic Curve Cryptography ( ECC ) . Public Key Execution Unit
The Public Key Execution Unit on the family is designed to support the RSA and Diffie-Hellman algorithms. The MPC180e has the additional capability of executing Elliptic Curve Cryptography. The public key execution unit can be programmed to execute the RSA algorithm using a modulus ranging from 80-bit to 2048-bit, allowing the user to define security levels. The execution unit is capable of executing a 1024-bit RSA sign in 32ms supporting up to 13 IKE handshakes per second. On the MPC180e, the elliptic curve enhanced execution unit has a programmable field size ranging from 55-bits to 511-bits, of fering unpre ce d ente d levels of security. It is c ap able of executing an elliptic curve signature in 11ms leading to 45.5 IKE handshakes per second.

Message Authentication Unit
The Message Authentication Unit on the MPC180 and MPC180e executes SHA-1, MD-4 and MD-5 hash algorithms. The unit is designed to provide a hashed message of 128-bits for MD-5 and 160-bits for SHA-1. T he unit can be programmed to p ro c es s the Hashed Message A uthentic ation Code (HMAC) functions used in various security protocols.
Random Number Generator
The RNG is capable of generating 32-bit random numbers that can be chained and buffered to supply up to 160-bits at a time. It is designed to comply with FIPS-140 standards for randomness. The integrated RNG allows the system to develop random challenges or random secret keys up to the rate of 10Mbps.
E l l i p t i c Curve Cr yptography
ECC is a set of algorithms for Public Key Encryption. These algorithms implement the same level of security as the RSA algorithms using a lower number of bits. For example a 155-bit field size in ECC is equivalent to a 1024-bit modulus in RSA directly translating into lower processing overhead and higher performance. Lower processing overhead indicates less time to authenticate and critical savings of power and MIPS in wireless applications.
Software and Development
Motorola is working with WindRiverTM to supply device drivers integrated into the VxWorksTM operating system. Sample drivers will also be provided to customers enabling integration into any operating system. A WindRiver SBC8260C development board with board support package will be available to allow accelerated design cycles.
