PT-CPC4400 PT-CPC4405
Ethernet Switching Platform
1.0 General Description
The PT-CPC4400 is a Compact PCI (CPCI) based Ethernet switch. There are twenty-four switched 10Base-T/100Base-TX ports, (2) 1000Base-TX/FX Gigabit ports and (1) out-of-band (management) 10Base-T/100 Base-TX port. The switched, and out-ofband 10/100M Ethernet ports are accessed from the user-defined pins on the CPCI mid-plane connectors, P3 and P5. The Gigabit ports are accessed either from the front panel or the CPCI mid-plane. On-board magnetics allow the user to build the Ethernet cabling into the mid-plane. Other CPCI based cards may connect to the PT-CPC4400 via Ethernet over the midplane, removing the often confusing and unreliable mass of cabling found within most `Rack Area Network' solutions. Alternatively, a rear panel I/O Line Interface Module (LIM) can bring some (or all) of the Ethernet interfaces out to RJ-45 connectors.

3.0 Applications
Due to its stand-alone architecture and CPCI chassis compatibilty, the PT-CPC4400 is suitable for integration into many types of high-availability (HA) as well as nonHA Ethernet switching applications. These applications include: · VoIP Media Gateway · Integrated Access Devices (IAD) · IP DSLAM Architecture · Integrated Server Farms

3.1 VoIP Media Gateway
The voice over IP media gateway application consists of three major functional blocks. The Allocate, Convert and Aggregate blocks make up the simplified bridge architecture between traditional PSTN voice circuits and the Internet. Figure 1 shows a block diagram of a simplified media gateway. In this example, the Allocate function allocates circuits from the PSTN through a TDM switch to H.110 based DSPs. The DSPs serve to convert the PSTN circuit into IP frames. The IP frames are collected and aggregated into a high speed Ethernet uplink to be sent over the Internet. Another PTI product, the PT-CPC395 Dual Channel T3/H.110 TDM Switch provides the allocation function in this example.
3.3 IP DSLAM Device
The IP DSLAM Device concentrates multiple xDSL interfaces onto an IP packet Ethernet interface. See Figure 3. The PT-CPC4400 aggregates the traffic from multiple xDSL line interface cards onto gigabit uplinks for transmission over the Internet.

3.4 Integrated Server Farm
The Integrated Server Farm collapses an entire network of servers into a single chassis. See Figure 4. The CPCI chassis is populated with Servers attached to their file systems. The PT-CPC4400 provides inter-connectivity between the servers as well gigabit uplinks to the Internet.

3.2 Integrated Access Device (IAD)
The Integrated Access Device consists of a gathering of different types of digital and analog interface boards that are commonly tied together through the CPCI Midplane. The PT-CPC4400 provides a common Ethernet interface for the assortment of devices. See Figure 2.
